Abstract
In this work, two pathways of reactivity are investigated to generate site-specific substitutions at the B7 vertex of the luminescent boron cluster, anti-B18H22. First, a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction utilizing the precursor 7-I-B18H21 and a series of model nucleophiles was developed, ultimately producing several B-N- and B-O-substituted species. Interestingly, the B-I bond in this cluster can also be substituted in an uncatalyzed fashion, leading to the formation of various B-N, B-O, and B-S products. This work highlights intricate differences corresponding to these two reaction pathways and analyzes the role of solvents and additives on product distributions. As a result of our synthetic studies, seven new B18-based clusters were synthesized, isolated, and characterized by mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The photoluminescence properties of two structurally similar ether and thioether products were further investigated, with both exhibiting blue fluorescence in solution at 298 K and long-lived green or yellow phosphorescence at 77 K. Overall, this work shows, for the first time, the ability to perform substitution of a boron-halogen bond with nucleophiles in a B18-based cluster, resulting in the formation of photoluminescent molecules.

Abstract
Boron's unique position in the Periodic Table, that is, at the apex of the line separating metals and nonmetals, makes it highly versatile in chemical reactions and applications. Contemporary demand for renewable and clean energy as well as energy-efficient products has seen boron playing key roles in energy-related research, such as 1) activating and synthesizing energy-rich small molecules, 2) storing chemical and electrical energy, and 3) converting electrical energy into light. These applications are fundamentally associated with boron's unique characteristics, such as its electron-deficiency and the availability of an unoccupied p orbital, which allow the formation of a myriad of compounds with a wide range of chemical and physical properties. For example, boron's ability to achieve a full octet of electrons with four covalent bonds and a negative charge has led to the synthesis of a wide variety of borate anions of high chemical and electrochemical stability-in particular, weakly coordinating anions. This Review summarizes recent advances in the study of boron compounds for energy-related processes and applications.

Abstract
Palladium-catalyzed dehydrogenative B-H/C-H cross coupling of monocarborane anions with alkenes is reported, allowing for the first time the isolation of selectively penta-alkenylated boron clusters. The reaction cascade is regioselective for the cage positions, leading directly to B2-6 functionalization. Under mild and convenient conditions, styrenes, benzylic alkenes and aliphatic alkenes are demonstrated to be viable coupling partners with exclusive vinyl-type B-C bond formation. Multiple subsequent transformations provide access to directing group-free products, chiral derivatives and penta-alkylated cages. The five-fold coupling, combined with the latter reactions, represents a powerful methodology for the straightforward synthesis of new classes of boron clusters.

Abstract
The preparation of the carborane acid chloride [1-(COCl)–CB11H11]− from the carboxylic acid [1-(COOH)–CB11H11]− is reported. This acid chloride exhibits remarkable inertness towards moisture and can be stored under ambient conditions for several months. Reaction with amines affords secondary and tertiary carborane amides [1-(CONR1R2)–CB11H11]− in moderate to high yields under mild conditions. Two of the amide products were characterized by X-ray crystallography in addition to spectroscopic analysis. Preliminary studies show that the amides can be reduced to the corresponding amines and that the acid chloride has the potential to serve as a starting material for carborane ester formation. The preparation of the carborane acid chloride [1-(COCl)–CB11H11]− from the carboxylic acid [1-(COOH)–CB11H11]− and subsequent amide formation are reported.![]()

Abstract
The inner salts x-H3N-closo-1-CB11H11 (x = 12, 2) and 7-H3N-12-F-closo-1-CB11H11 were fluorinated with elemental fluorine in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride to give the B-perfluorinated ammonio derivatives 1-H-x-H3N-closo-1-CB11F10 (x = 12, 7, 2). Deprotonation of the ammonio group yielded the corresponding amino-functionalized anions [1-H-x-H2N-closo-1-CB11F10](-) (x = 12, 7, 2) that were isolated as [Et4N](+) salts. Hydrolysis of the highly fluorinated inner salts 1-H-x-H3N-closo-1-CB11F10 (x = 12, 7, 2) is very slow in acidic aqueous solutions. This stability of the ammonio derivatives is unprecedented because the related fluorinated anion [1-H2N-closo-1-CB11F11](-) is immediately hydrolyzed to simple boron species in the presence of aqueous acids. The ammonio derivatives 1-H-x-H3N-closo-1-CB11F10 (x = 12, 7, 2) are much more acidic compared to their non-fluorinated counterparts as assessed from potentiometric titrations and DFT calculations. The inner salts and the anions were characterized by NMR and vibrational sepectroscopy. Solid-sate structures of 1-H-12-H3N-closo-1-CB11F10·H2O, 1-H-7-H3N-closo-1-CB11F10·diglyme, 1-H-2-H3N-closo-1-CB11F10·0.5H2O, 7-H3N-12-F-closo-1-CB11H10·(CH3)2CO and [Et4N][1-H-12-H2N-closo-1-CB11F10] were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
Disubstituted carba-closo-dodecaborate anions with one functional group bonded to the cluster carbon atom and one ethynyl group bonded to the antipodal boron atom were synthesized from easily accessible {closo-1-CB11} clusters. [Et4N][1-NC-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] ([Et4N]4b) was prepared starting from Cs[12-Et3SiC≡C-closo-1-CB11H11] (Cs1c) via salts of the anions [1-HO(O)C-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10](-) (2b) and [1-H2N(O)C-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10](-) (3b). In a similar reaction sequence [Et4N][1-CN-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] ([Et4N]7b) was obtained from Cs[1-H2N-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] (Cs5b) by formamidation to yield [Et4N][1-H(O)CHN-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] ([Et4N]6b) and successive dehydration. In addition, the synthesis of the isonitrile [Et4N][1-CN-closo-1-CB11H11] ([Et4N]7a) is presented. The {closo-1-CB11} derivatives were characterized by multinuclear NMR as well as vibrational spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. The crystal structures of [Et4N][1-HO(O)C-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] ([Et4N]2b), [Et4N][1-H2N(O)C-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] ([Et4N]3b), [Et4N][1-NC-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] ([Et4N]4b), [Et4N][1-H(O)CHN-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] ([Et4N]6b), [Et4N][1-CN-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] ([Et4N]7b), and K[1-H(O)CHN-closo-1-CB11H11] ([Et4N]6a) were determined. The transmission of electronic effects through the carba-closo-dodecaboron cage was studied based on (13)C NMR spectroscopic data, by results derived from density functional theory calculations, and by a comparison to the data of related benzene and bicyclo[2.2.2]octane derivatives.

Abstract
Microwave-assisted cross-coupling reactions of boron-iodinated derivatives of 1-carba-closo-dodecaborate(1-) (1) with CuCN is shown to cyanate boron vertices of this anion. Clusters with one or two CN groups can be prepared: syntheses of 12-CN-CHB11H10(-) (3) and 7,12-(CN)2-CHB11H9(-) (6) gave yields of 80% and 81%, respectively. The [Et4N](+) salts of 3 and 6 were characterized by NMR, IR, and mass spectroscopies, and the crystal structure of [Et4N]3 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Hydrolysis of 3 gave the carboxylic acid 12-COOH-CHB11H10(-) (7).

Abstract
The gas phase structure, stability, spectra, and proton transfer properties of monoprotic carborane acid-water clusters [CB(11)F(m)H(11-m)(OH(2))(1)]-(H(2)O)(n) (where m = 0, 5, and 10; n = 1-6) have been calculated using density functional theory (DFT) with the Becke's three-parameter hybrid exchange functional and Lee-Yang-Parr correlation functional (B3LYP) using 6-31+G* basis set. Results reveal that Eigen cation defects are found in CBW(n) (where n = 2-6) clusters and these clusters are significantly more stable than the non-Eigen geometry. In addition to the conventional hydrogen bond (H-bond) the role of dihydrogen bond (DHB) and halogen bond (XB) in the stabilization of these clusters can be observed from the molecular graphs derived from the atoms in molecules (AIM) analysis. Spectral information shows the features of Eigen cation and proton oscillation involved in the proton transfer process. The dissociation of proton from the perfluoro derivatives with two water molecules is more favorable when compared to the other derivatives.

Abstract
Unlike the "parent" carborane anion CHB(11)H(11)(-), halogenated carborane anions such as CHB(11)H(5)Br(6)(-) can be readily C-functionalized in high yield and purity, enhancing their utility as weakly coordinating anions.
