Monolayer of Hydrazine Facilitates the Direct Covalent Attachment of C60 Fullerene to a Silicon Surface

The development of oxygen-free organic-inorganic interfaces has led to new schemes for the functionalization of silicon surfaces with nitrogen-based chemical groups. However, building layers of large structures directly on this functionalized surface has remained elusive. This work confirms the path to form a stable interface between silicon and buckminsterfullerene C₆₀ based on covalent chemical bonds. The starting point for this modification is the hydrazine-reacted Si(111) surface with the diamine functionality, which is further reacted directly with the C₆₀ molecules. The chemistry of this process is confirmed spectroscopically and microscopically and can be used to form organic-inorganic interfaces separated by a single layer of nitrogen.

Carbon Nanotubes Covalently Attached to Functionalized Surfaces Directly through the Carbon Cage

The covalent attachment of nonfunctionalized and carboxylic acid-functionalized carbon nanotubes to amine-terminated organic monolayers on gold and silicon surfaces is investigated. It is well established that the condensation reaction between a carboxylic acid and an amine is a viable method to anchor carbon nanotubes to solid substrates. The work presented here shows that the presence of the carboxylic group on the nanotube is not required for attachment to occur, as direct attachment via the substrate amine and the nanotube cage can take place. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy confirm the presence of carbon nanotubes in intimate contact with the surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is utilized to compare the surface chemistry of the functionalized and nonfunctionalized carbon nanotubes and is supported by a computational investigation. Ion fragments attributed to the direct attachment between the surface and carbon nanotube cage are detected by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. The overall attachment scheme is evaluated and can be further used on multiple carbonaceous materials attached to solid substrates.

Demonstration of ultrarapid interfacial formation of 1D fullerene nanorods with photovoltaic properties

We demonstrate ultrarapid interfacial formation of one-dimensional (1D) single-crystalline fullerene C60 nanorods at room temperature in 5 s. The nanorods of ∼ 11 μm in length and ∼ 215 nm in diameter are developed in a hexagonal close-pack crystal structure, contrary to the cubic crystal structure of pristine C60. Vibrational and electronic spectroscopy provide strong evidence that the nanorods are a van der Waals solid, as evidenced from the preservation of the electronic structure of the C60 molecules within the rods. Steady state optical spectroscopy reveals a dominance of charge transfer excitonic transitions in the nanorods. A significant enhancement of photogenerated charge carriers is observed in the nanorods in comparison to pristine C60, revealing the effect of shape on the photovoltaic properties. Due to their ultrarapid, large-scale, room-temperature synthesis with single-crystalline structure and excellent optoelectronic properties, the nanorods are expected to be promising for photosensitive devices applications.

Organic semiconductors for device applications: current trends and future prospects

With the rich experience of developing silicon devices over a period of the last six decades, it is easy to assess the suitability of a new material for device applications by examining charge carrier injection, transport, and extraction across a practically realizable architecture; surface passivation; and packaging and reliability issues besides the feasibility of preparing mechanically robust wafer/substrate of single-crystal or polycrystalline/amorphous thin films. For material preparation, parameters such as purification of constituent materials, crystal growth, and thin-film deposition with minimum defects/disorders are equally important. Further, it is relevant to know whether conventional semiconductor processes, already known, would be useable directly or would require completely new technologies. Having found a likely candidate after such a screening, it would be necessary to identify a specific area of application against an existing list of materials available with special reference to cost reduction considerations in large-scale production. Various families of organic semiconductors are reviewed here, especially with the objective of using them in niche areas of large-area electronic displays, flexible organic electronics, and organic photovoltaic solar cells. While doing so, it appears feasible to improve mobility and stability by adjusting π-conjugation and modifying the energy band-gap. Higher conductivity nanocomposites, formed by blending with chemically conjugated C-allotropes and metal nanoparticles, open exciting methods of designing flexible contact/interconnects for organic and flexible electronics as can be seen from the discussion included here.
