Electronic structure and luminescence properties of unique complexes: cyclometalated iridium(iii) chelated by o-carboranyl-pyridine ligands

Iridium(iii) complexes that use o-carborane as a chelating ligand have been theoretically investigated for the first time. The superior properties of complexes will potentially promote the discovery of efficient blue-emitting complexes.

(BB)-Carboryne Complex of Ruthenium: Synthesis by Double B-H Activation at a Single Metal Center

The first example of a transition metal (BB)-carboryne complex containing two boron atoms of the icosahedral cage connected to a single exohedral metal center (POBBOP)Ru(CO)2 (POBBOP = 1,7-OP(i-Pr)2-2,6-dehydro-m-carborane) was synthesized by double B-H activation within the strained m-carboranyl pincer framework. Theoretical calculations revealed that the unique three-membered (BB)>Ru metalacycle is formed by two bent B-Ru σ-bonds with the concomitant increase of the bond order between the two metalated boron atoms. The reactivity of the highly strained electron-rich (BB)-carboryne fragment with small molecules was probed by reactions with electrophiles. The carboryne-carboranyl transformations reported herein represent a new mode of cooperative metal-ligand reactivity of boron-based complexes.

Luminescent Metal Complexes Featuring Photophysically Innocent Boron Cluster Ligands

We report the synthesis and characterization of a series of d8 metal complexes featuring robust and photophysically innocent strong-field chelating 1,1'-bis(o-carborane) (bc) ligand frameworks. A combination of UV-Vis spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray structural analysis, and DFT calculations of these species suggest that the dianionic bc ligand does not contribute to any visible metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transitions, yet it provides a strong ligand field in these complexes. Furthermore, a bc-based Pt(II) complex containing a 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine ligand (dtb-bpy) has been prepared and was found to display blue phosphorescent emission dominated by MLCT from the Pt(II) center to the dtb-bpy ligand. Importantly, the bulky three-dimensional nature of the bc ligand precludes intermolecular Pt(II)⋯Pt(II) interactions in the solid state where the resulting compounds retain their emission properties. This study opens a potentially new avenue for designing organic light-emitting diode (OLED) materials with tunable properties featuring photophysically innocent boron-rich cluster ligands.

The Design of "Neutral" Carbanions with Intramolecular Charge Compensation

Strategies to construct zwitterionic anions from the parent anions are proposed. Two principles are employed; the cationic counterpart is (a) attached as a substituent or (b) inserted as an integral part at a remote location in the assembly. The optimized geometries reveal that a striking similarity exists between the zwitterions and the respective precursor parent anion. The computed vibrational frequencies emphasize that these novel entities are minima on their respective potential energy surfaces. A substantial HOMO-LUMO gap indicates that the proposed structures do not show instability in their respective electronic states and that the higher energy configuration states do not contribute to the ground state viability. The separation of charge between the monopoles in these zwitterions is demonstrated by moderately large nonzero dipole moments. Significant large energy barriers for rearrangement to the closely related positional isomers, demonstrated in a few cases, advocate the thermal stability (associated with spectroscopic viability) of the novel molecules. The donor capacity (basicity) of the anionic subunit in these zwitterions is comparable to that of the respective parent anions. Since the qualitative and quantitative features in the designed charged compensated complexes are conserved as anions, these molecules may perhaps be employed in synthetic organic or organometallic chemistry.

Carborane-based design of a potent vitamin D receptor agonist

The development of a promising clinical antitumor vitamin D analog possessing a side-chain o-carborane cluster that efficiently binds to VDR by unconventional dihydrogen bonding (BH···HN) is described.

The vitamin D nuclear receptor (VDR) is a potential target for cancer therapy. It is expressed in many tumors and its ligand shows anticancer actions. To combine these properties with the application of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), we design and synthesize a potent VDR agonist based on the skeleton of the hormone 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D₃ (1,25D) and an o-carborane (dicarba-o-closo-1,2-dodecaborane) at the end of its side chain. The present ligand is the first secosteroidal analog with the carborane unit that efficiently binds to VDR and functions as an agonist with 1,25D-like potency in transcriptional assay on vitamin D target genes. Moreover it exhibits similar antiproliferative and pro-differentiating activities but is significantly less hypercalcemic than 1,25D. The crystal structure of its complex with VDR ligand binding domain reveals its binding mechanism involving boron-mediated dihydrogen bonds that mimic vitamin D hydroxyl interactions. In addition to the therapeutic interest, this study establishes the basis for the design of new unconventional vitamin D analogs containing carborane moieties for specific molecular recognition, and drug research and development.
