Abstract
The frequent detection of pharmaceutical compounds in the environment has led to a growing awareness, which may pose a major threat to the aquatic environment. In this study, photodegradation (direct and indirect photolysis) of two different dissociation states of fluoxetine (FLU) was investigated in water, mainly including the determination of photolytic transition states and products, and the mechanisms of indirect photodegradation with ·OH, CO3*- and NO3*. The main direct photolysis pathways are defluorination and C-C bond cleavage. In addition, the indirect photodegradation of FLU in water is mainly through the reactions with ·OH and NO3*, and the photodegradation reaction with CO3*- is relatively difficult to occur in the water environment. Our results provide a theoretical basis for understanding the phototransformation process of FLU in the water environment and assessing its potential risk.

Chemical Investigation on the Mechanism and Kinetics of the Atmospheric Degradation Reaction of Trichlorofluoroethene by OH⋅ and Its Subsequent Fate in the Presence of O 2 /NOx. Chemphyschem 2024; 25:e202300665. Abstract
The M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory was used to examine the degradation of Trichlorofluoroethene (TCFE) initiated by OH⋅ radicals. Additionally, the coupled-cluster single-double with triple perturbative [CCSD(T)] method was employed to refine the single-point energies using the complete basis set extrapolation approach. The results indicated that OH-addition is the dominant pathway. OH⋅ adds to both the C1 and C2 carbons, resulting in the formation of the C(OH)Cl2 -⋅CClF and ⋅CCl2 -C(OH)ClF species. The associated barrier heights were determined to be 1.11 and -0.99 kcal mol-1 , respectively. Furthermore, the energetic and thermodynamic parameters show that pathway 1 exhibits greater exothermicity and exergonicity compared to pathway 2, with differences of 8.11 and 8.21 kcal mol-1 , correspondingly. The primary pathway involves OH addition to the C2 position, with a rate constant of 6.2×10-13 cm3 molecule-1 sec-1 at 298 K. This analysis served to estimate the atmospheric lifetime, along with the photochemical ozone creation potential (POCP) and ozone depletion potential (ODP). It yielded an atmospheric lifetime of 8.49 days, an ODP of 4.8×10-4 , and a POCP value of 2.99, respectively. Radiative forcing efficiencies were also estimated at the M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) level. Global warming potentials (GWPs) were calculated for 20, 100, and 500 years, resulting in values of 9.61, 2.61, and 0.74, respectively. TCFE is not expected to make a significant contribution to the radiative forcing of climate change. The results obtained from the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) indicated that TCFE and its energized adducts are unable to photolysis under sunlight in the UV and visible spectrum. Secondary reactions involve the [TCFE-OH-O2 ]⋅ peroxy radical, leading subsequently to the [TCFE-OH-O]⋅ alkoxy radical. It was found that the alkoxy radical resulting from the peroxy radical can lead to the formation of phosgene (COCl2 ) and carbonyl chloride fluoride (CClFO), with phosgene being the primary product.

Abstract
Based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods with integral equation formula polarized continuum model (IEFPCM), the fluorescent behavior and recognizing mechanism of probe N'-((1-hydroxynaphthalen-2-yl)methylene)isoquinoline-3-carbohydrazide (NHMI) for Al3+/Mg2+ ion were investigated in more detail. Excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process in probe NHMI occurs in the stepwise pattern. The proton H5 of enol structure (E1) firstly moves from O4 to N6 to form single proton-transfer (SPT2) structure, and then the proton H2 of SPT2 transfers from N1 to N3 to form the stable double proton-transfer (DPT) structure. Subsequently, the transformation from DPT to its isomer (DPT1) induces the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) process. Two non-emissive TICT states (TICT1 and TICT2) were obtained, and TICT2 state quenches the fluorescence observed in the experiment. With the addition of aluminum (Al3+) or magnesium (Mg2+) ion, TICT process is prohibited by the coordination interaction between NHMI and Al3+/Mg2+, and the strong fluorescent signal is turned on. For probe NHMI, the twisted C-N single bond of acylhydrazone part leads to the TICT state. This sensing mechanism may inspire researchers to develop new probes from a different direction.

Abstract
Citalopram (CIT) is a commonly prescribed medication for depression. However, the photodegradation mechanism of CIT has not yet been fully analyzed. Therefore, the photodegradation process of CIT in water is studied by density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory. The calculated results show that during the indirect photodegradation process, the indirect photodegradation of CIT with ·OH occurs via OH-addition and F-substitution. The minimum activation energy of C10 site was 0.4 kcal/mol. All OH-addition and F-substitution reactions are exothermic. The reaction of 1O2 with CIT includes the substitution of 1O2 for F and an addition reaction at the C14 site. The Ea value of this process is 1.7 kcal/mol, which is the lowest activation energy required for the reaction of 1O2 with CIT. C-C/C-N/C-F cleavage is involved in the direct photodegradation process. In the direct photodegradation of CIT, the activation energy of the C7-C16 cleavage reaction was the lowest, which was 12.5 kcal/mol. Analysis of the Ea values found that OH-addition and F-substitution, the substitution of 1O2 for F and addition at the C14 site, as well as the cleavage reactions of C6-F/C7-C16/C17-C18/C18-N/C19-N/C20-N are the main pathways of photodegradation of CIT.

Abstract
The work explored the fluorescent properties of probe N'-(2, 4-dihydroxy-benzylidene)pyridine-3-carbohydrazide (HL) and its sensing mechanism for the Al3+ ion in detail. HL has two competing deactivation processes: ESIPT and TICT. Upon light-excitation, only one proton can transfer, and the SPT1 structure is generated. The SPT1 form is highly emissive, which is inconsistent with the colorless emission observed in the experiment. Then a nonemissive TICT state was obtained by rotating the C-N single bond. The energy barrier of the TICT process is lower than that of the ESIPT process, which indicates that probe HL will decay to the TICT state and quench the fluorescence. When Al3+ is recognized by probe HL, strong coordinate bonds are formed between HL and Al3+, and then the TICT state is prohibited, and the fluorescence of HL is turned on. Al3+ as a coordinated ion can effectively remove the TICT state but cannot influence the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process of HL.

Abstract
Photoinduced charge transfer affects the efficiency and selectivity of photochemical reactions. Incorporation of donating groups into the isoquinolinium core allowed us to overcome the photochemical inactivity of the corresponding dithienyl-substituted terarylenes, presumably by redirecting the charge transfer within the molecule, and gave access to a new family of thermally reversible photoswitches.

Abstract
Molecules with Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) effects could show strong emission in solid or aggregate form, thus they are suitable for applications in the field of solid luminescent materials. According to former reporting, AIE molecules are always J-aggregates. In this study, a new benzotriazole derivate with electron donor-acceptor structure was synthesized. (E)-4-(2-(1H-benzo[d] [1,2,3] triazol-1-yl) vinyl)-N, N-dimethylaniline (BTADA) has both TICT and AIE effect, even though it is H-aggregate. Furthermore, BTADA could respond to proton in solution and solid form. Due to its multiple binging sites, proton would bind to benzotriazole and dimethylaniline moiety successively when BTADA was exposed to acid, and the fluorescent color changed from green to yellow then blue as the concentration of proton increased. Such phenomena indicate BTADA has potential usage in proton detection.

Abstract
In this article a syringol-π-benz[e]indolium based donor-acceptor fluorophore has been reported. The fluorophore shows a solvent polarity dependent change in the absorption and emission spectra in solution. A combined spectroscopic and time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) studies reveal higher dipole moment of the fluorophore in the excited state, resulting positive solvatochromism. In physiological pH, the phenol group in the fluorophore is easily deprotonated owing to the electron pulling effect of the substituents. Consequently, the phenolate (PhO-) becomes a strong active donor in the new donor-acceptor pair. In aqueous solution, the new phenolate fluorochrome shows negligible fluorescence due to energy loss via non-radiative pathways from the low-lying polar excited states. The fluorochrome can detect human and bovine serum albumins in physiological buffer solution with high selectivity. The underlying mechanism of human serum albumin (HSA) detection was estimated to be strong (1.46 × 105 M-1, ΔG = -7.05 kcal/mol) supramolecular complexation between the fluorophore and albumin in hydrophobic binding site III-B. The linear relationship between fluorescence intensity and HSA concentration extends from 40 mg/L to an impressive upper limit (540 mg/L), thereby opening an opportunity for albumin detection in a broad range of health conditions. The practical applicability of the fluorophore was tested in spiked urine samples and a good correlation was observed between fluorescence intensity and the concentration of human serum albumin in neutral aqueous samples.

Abstract
In this paper, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) methods were used to investigate substituent effects and excited-state intramolecular double-proton transfer (ESIDPT) in 1, 3-bis (2-pyridylimino)-4, 7-dihydroxyisoindole (BPI–OH) and its derivatives. The results of a systematic study of the substituent effects of electron-withdrawing groups (F, Cl and Br) on the adjacent sites of the benzene ring were used to regulate the photophysical properties of the molecules and the dynamics of the proton-transfer process. Geometric structure comparisons and infrared (IR) spectroscopic analysis confirmed that strengthening of the intramolecular hydrogen bond in the first excited state (S1) facilitated proton transfer. Functional analysis of the reduced density gradient confirmed these conclusions. Double-proton transfer in BPI–OH is considered to occur in two steps, i.e., BPI–OH (N) [Formula: see text] BPI–OH (T1) [Formula: see text] BPI–OH (T2), in the ground state (S0) and the S1 state. The potential-energy curves (PECs) for two-step proton transfer were scanned for both the S0 and S1 states to clarify the mechanisms and pathways of proton transfer. The stepwise path in which two protons are consecutively transferred has a low energy barrier and is more rational and favorable. This study shows that the presence or absence of coordinating groups, and the type of coordinating group, affect the hydrogen-bond strength. A coordinating group enhances hydrogen-bond formation, i.e., it promotes excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT).

Abstract
In this work, we present for the first time a general strategy via molecular reversed conformational distortion for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). A model purely organic compound named BNNIO with a common fluorophore flexibly linked to benzene by an oxygen atom is rationally designed and successfully synthesized. Moreover, the rate constant of reverse intersystem crossing reaches 2.34 × 104 s-1 as determined by transient spectroscopy. As a result, TADF emission of BNNIO is observed with a photoluminescence quantum yield of 90.72% and a lifetime of 84.76 μs at 415 nm. This universal regulation strategy undoubtedly opens a new avenue for the development of novel purely organic blue light-emitting materials.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) are used to study the solvatochromic effect and the excited-state intramolecular double proton transfer (ESIDPT) of 1,3-Bis(2-pyridylimino)-4,7-dihydroxyisoindole (BPI-OH) in different kinds of solvents. The hydrogen bonding parameters and IR spectra reveal that in the excited state, the strength of excited hydrogen bond increase with the decrease of solvent polarity. Furthermore, the reduction density gradient (RDG) analysis confirms the corresponding conclusion. Frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) are analyzed, illuminating that the smaller the polarity of solvent, the smaller the energy gap between the HOMO and LUMO. The structures of BPI-OH (N) (normal), BPI-OH (T1) (single), and BPI-OH (T2) (double) were optimized. Previous reports found the double protons in BPI-OH molecule are transferred step-by-step process BPI-OH(N)→BPI-OH(T1)→BPI-OH(T2) in the ground state (S0) and the first excited singlet state (S1). Here, the potential energy curves of O1-H2 and O4-H5 in the S0 and S1 states were scanned in four kinds of solvents, respectively. It was found that in S1 state, BPI-OH(N)→BPI-OH(T1) was more prone to proton transfer than BPI-OH(T1)→BPI-OH(T2). In addition, by comparing the reaction energy barriers of the four kinds of solvents, it can be found that ESIPT is difficult to occur with the increase of solvent polarity. Meanwhile, it was also studied that MeOH as an explicit solvent was more likely to promote the ESIPT process than other implicit solvents.

Abstract
It is of great significance for biological research to develop efficient detection methods of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). When DFAN reacts with H2S, 2,4-dinitrophenyl ether group acting as an electron acceptor generates a hydroxyl-substituted 2,4-dinitrophenyl ether group, resulting in the disappearance of photoinduced electron transfer (PET), and the new formed DFAH can be observed, while being accompanied by a significant fluorescence. In the present study, the PET sensing mechanism of probe DFAN and the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process of DFAH have been explored in detail based on the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods. Our theoretical results show that the fluorescence quenching of DFAN is caused by the PET mechanism, and the result of ESIPT mechanism is not due to the large Stokes shift fluorescence emission of DFAH. We also optimized the geometric structure of the transition state of DFAH. The frontier molecular orbitals and potential barrier show that the ESIPT process does not easy occur easily for DFAH. The enol structure of DFAH is more stable than that of the keto structure. The absence of the PET process resulted in the enol structure emitting strong fluorescence, which is consistent with the single fluorescence in the experiment. Above all, our calculations are sufficient to verify the sensing mechanism of H2S using DFAN. Our theoretical results show that the fluorescence quenching of DFAN is caused by PET mechanism and the large Stokes shift fluorescence emission of DFAH is not due to the ESIPT mechanism. Due to the absence of PET process, enol structure emits strong fluorescence, which is inconsistent with the fluorescence mechanism in the experiment.![]()

Abstract
Twisted internal charge transfer (TICT) states are of fundamental importance during the photo-physical processes of dyes and sensors. In this contribution, excited-state dynamics of an Al3+ fluorescence sensor 1-{[(2-hydroxyphenyl)-imino]methyl}naphthalen-2-ol based on the turn-on signal is clarified. Two different dark TICT states are observed by exploring the excited-state potential energy surface. With the twist of the C2-N bond, the two dark states can be reached facilely, which induce the experimentally observed weak fluorescence of the sensor. The sensing mechanism is then uncovered by investigating the electronic coupling between the sensor and analyte. Al3+ is proved to form strong coordination bonds with the sensor, which restricts the motion of the C2-N bond. Consequently, the TICT states are eliminated, which generate the turn-on signal. This sensing mechanism is trustworthy and intrinsically different from the previously proposed one, which would shed some light on the design of turn-on sensors.

Abstract
Anthraquinone derivatives have been widely used as photocleavage agents and dyes. Here, photoinduced excited state intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) dynamics of 1-aminoanthraquinone in ethanol are studied by femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy and quantum chemical (QC) calculations. Four decay associated difference spectra and corresponding lifetime components were obtained by singular value decomposition and global fitting analysis from the fs-TA spectra. The QC calculations prove that the S1 state has obvious ICT character. Planar ICT (PICT) and twisted ICT (TICT) reaction coordinates are observed. On the PICT coordinate, vibrational relaxation (VR) and intersystem crossing (ISC) processes are observed. The ISC efficiency is dependent on excitation wavelength, which elucidates that T'2 state participates in the ISC process on a higher-level than the S'1 state. On the TICT coordinate, the TICT process is dependent on excitation wavelength, which elucidates a direct experimental evidence of an energy barrier in excited state TICT potential energy.

Abstract
Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) method was used to study the different excited states proton transfer mechanism of DPP in cyclohexane (CHE) and Methanol (MeOH). The results indicate that the concerted mechanism and the stepwise mechanism coexist in the double proton transfer process of DPP dimer in the aprotic solvent CHE, the stepwise mechanism predominates. The stepwise mechanism can only carry out single proton transfer (DPP-SPT), the second proton cannot be transferred because it is hindered by high energy barriers. The concerted mechanism produces a double proton transfer (DPP-DPT). The potential energy surface of the DPP dimer was calculated and the double fluorescence phenomenon of DPP dimer observed by Chou et al. (P.T. Chou, Y.I. Liu, H.W. Liu, W.S. Yu, Dual Excitation behavior of double proton transfer versus Charge Transfer in 4-(N-Substituted Amino)-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridines tuned by dielectric and hydrogen-bonding perturbation, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 123 (2001) 12119-12120) was explained. In view of the protonic solvent effect of methanol, the potential energy curve of the DPP/MeOH cluster was constructed. The fluorescence quenching process of DPP/MeOH clusters was elucidated. The proton transfer pathways of DPP/MeOH clusters are revealed in two different concerted ways (Type A: protons transfer from DPP molecules to MeOH solvent molecules; Type B: protons transfer from MeOH solvent to DPP molecules). The ESPT process of DPP molecules in the protic solvent MeOH was found to be more prone to Type B. The results can help to better understand the intermolecular hydrogen bonding mechanism of DPP molecules.

Abstract
As the derivatives and structural analogs of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs) and methoxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (MeO-PBDEs) have attracted increasing concern. However, knowledge of the photochemical behaviors of OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs in water is limited. Here, we used density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory to examine the structure-related photochemical properties of OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs in water and the effects of metal ions as environmental factors. Eight 6-OH-PBDEs with 1-8 bromine substituents and eight 6-MeO-PBDEs with 1-8 bromine substituents were selected for this study. The optimized geometries of the selected congeners and their complexes with metals in the lowest excited triplet state (T1) showed that one C-Br bond moderately or significantly elongated. The elongated C-Br bond in the T1 state was shown in the ortho-position for the 6-OH-PBDE congeners and the ortho-position or the meta-position for the 6-MeO-PBDE congeners. For the selected congeners, there were significant positive linear correlations between the number of bromine atoms (NBr) and the calculated average atomic charge of bromine and maximum electronic absorbance wavelength (λmax), and a negative linear correlation between the NBr and average bond dissociation energy of C-O bonds (BDEC-O). The photoreactivities of the 6-OH-PBDEs and 6-MeO-PBDEs increased with an increase in the bromination degree with or without metal ions. The calculated average atomic charge of bromine and BDEC-O of the complexes with Mg2+/Zn2+ was higher and lower than those of the corresponding monomers, respectively, indicating that the presence of Mg2+/Zn2+ increased the photoreactivity (debromination and dissociation of C-O bond) of the selected 6-OH-PBDEs and 6-MeO-PBDEs. The effects of the coordination of Mg2+/Zn2+ may be overestimated due to their missing explicit solvation shell. These results provide vital insight into the photochemical properties of OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs in water.

Abstract
The paper presents the results of studies conducted with the use of stationary and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy for the new derivative 2-Hydroxy-N-(2-phenylethyl)benzamide (SAL-3) in aqueous solutions with various concentrations of hydrogen ions as well as in solvent mixtures (i.e. media with changing polarity/polarizability). For the compound selected for the study placed in aqueous solutions with varying concentrations of hydrogen ions, the fluorescence emission spectra revealed a single emission band within most of the pH range, however, at low pH (pH<3) a significant broadening (noticeable effect of dual fluorescence) and shifting of the band was observed. Whereas, for water and polar (protic) solvents, we observed a very interesting phenomenon of dual fluorescence never before reported for this particular group of analogues (with the specific substituent system). Based on the results of the experiments, it was observed that the presented effects may be related both with conformational effects (related to the possible positioning of the-OH group on the side of the carbonyl system, which facilitates the possibility of proton transfer) as well as, most importantly, the effects of excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT-Excited State Intramolecular Proton Transfer) related in this case with the necessary (new/previously unobserved in published literature) presence of ionic and non-ionic forms of the compound). Both the conducted quantum-mechanical [TD]DFT-Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory) calculations and excited state dipole moment change calculations for the analyzed molecule in solvents with varying pH confirmed the association between the observed fluorescence phenomena and the two aforementioned effects.

Abstract
Inhibition of TICT can significantly increase the brightness of fluorescent materials. Accurate prediction of TICT is thus critical for the quantitative design of high-performance fluorophores and AIEgens. TICT of 14 types of popular organic fluorophores were modeled with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). A reliable and generalizable computational approach for modeling TICT formations was established. To demonstrate the prediction power of our approach, we quantitatively designed a boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-based AIEgen which exhibits (almost) barrierless TICT rotations in monomers. Subsequent experiments validated our molecular design and showed that the aggregation of this compound turns on bright emissions with ca. 27-fold fluorescence enhancement, as TICT formation is inhibited in molecular aggregates.

Abstract
The present study demonstrates the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism of 2-(benzimidazol-2-yl)-3-hydroxychromone (DH3B2) is based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods. We find that DH3B2-C is the main conformation to occur ESIPT. Moreover, we get the different results of DH3B2 for the ESIPT mechanisms in comparison with the previous reports. We have optimized three isomers (DH3B2-A, DH3B2-B and DH3B2-C), and calculated absorption and fluorescence spectra, which agree well with the experimental data. Furthermore, we prove the hydrogen bond is enhanced in the S1 state by comparing infrared vibrational spectra, the relevant bond length and bond angle. In our calculations, the results of the three levels of calculations (CAM-B3LYP/TZVP, B3LYP/TZVP and PBEPBE/TZVP) indicate that DH3B2-C is the most stable conformation, by compared the single point energy of three isomers. By constructed the potential energy surfaces (PESs), we find the converted relationship among the three isomers; DH3B2-C is the main conformation in which DH3B2 exists. Furthermore, combination with reduced density gradient (RDG) function, the hydrogen bond of DH3B2-C is stronger than that of DH3B2-A and DH3B2-B, which proves that DH3B2-C form is the most favorable form for ESIPT among the three isomers. Meanwhile, we have further investigated the ESIPT mechanisms of DH3B2, via constructing the potential energy curves (PECs). These results have shown that DH3B2-C is easier to ESIPT occur than DH3B2-A and DH3B2-B. Therefore, the proton receptors of the ESIPT are mainly the benzimidazole nitrogen atoms.

Abstract
In this work, density functional theory (DFT) and time density functional theory (TDDFT) methods were employed to investigate the nature of the double fluorescence emission of DEAHF in these three solvents. We analyzed the geometric structures, vibrational frequencies, frontier molecular orbitals (MOs), molecular electrostatic potential surface (MEPS), calculated absorption and fluorescence spectra and the potential-energy curves for DEAHF. All the results show that the intramolecular hydrogen bond of DEAHF is strengthened from S0 to S1 and the electron density redistribution occurs between the proton acceptor and donor, which can facilitate ESIPT. Moreover, the geometric structures, absorption and emission spectra, MEPS and potential-energy curve of DEAHF are identical. It reveals theoretically that ACN and PC can maintain the polarity of the solvent with 1:1 mixing, which is consistent with the experimental results.

Abstract
In this work, we focus our attention on chemical reactions confined within carbon nanotubes. As a result of the confinement within carbon nanotubes, novel physical and chemical properties are found for the confined materials. We consider the feasibility of proton transfer inside carbon nanotubes. To do that, we have chosen formamide as the simplest real model for exhibiting the tautomerization in DNA. We have used the quantitative structure–property relationship method, based on geometry optimization and quantum chemical structural descriptors, to illustrate the potential of using the confined space inside carbon nanotubes, which will provide comprehensive information about carbon nanotubes. All calculations have been carried out using density functional theory quantum calculations with the B3LYP functional. The geometries optimized by the Gaussian program were transferred to the computer software DRAGON to calculate pertinent descriptors that could be used in the quantitative structure–property relationship model.

Abstract
In this work, we present that different structures lead to different excited state properties based on the investigations of the systems with symmetrical and unsymmetrical properties. Our work shows that the symmetrical and unsymmetrical compounds with a modified structure play key roles in regulating the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (PT) (ESIPT) process. For N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-p-phenyle-nediamine (BSP) and N,N'-disalicylidene-1,6-pyrenediamine (BSD), when they are excited, the torsion angels result in the rematch of the spectra. By analyzing the potential energy surfaces (PESs) of the torsion angle and PT process, we conclude that the size of the π stack largely affects the molecular properties in the excited states. For 2'-hydroxychalcone derivatives, which have important applications in biotransformation reactions, investigating the molecules of M1 and M2 could promote innovation in bioengineering. The results of molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) and the real space intramolecular interactions show the state and position of the hydrogen bond (HB) in both S0 and S1 states. The corresponding PT PESs show that the ESIPT reaction is much easier for the M1 system due to the lack of the side chain hydroxyl compared with the M2 system. This work is not only consistent with experimental results and explains its mechanism but also presents that symmetric and nonsymmetric structures modify their own potential regulation and controlling effects for ESIPT behaviors.

Abstract
In order to understand the fine-tuned photo-physical behaviors of the N(X)-H⋯N systems, the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) switching in the N-substituted X1-5-NHIPA molecules (NHIPA = 2-(imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-2-yl)aniline and X = H, COCH3, CH3C6H4SO2, C6F5SO2, and COCF3) were investigated in detail in gas phase and three solvent media at TD-PBE0/6-311++G(d,p) and TD-M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) levels of theory. ESIPT reactions at S1 state were approximately without energy barrier, exergonic processes and were quantitatively demonstrated to be mainly sensitive to substituents and solvent media. The X-NHIPA (X = CH3C6H4SO2, C6F5SO2 and CF3CO) compounds were predicted to undergo fast, irreversible proton transfer at S1 state and, in turn, exhibit tautomer emission with anomalous large Stokes shift in the gas phase. In the toluene solvent, except for C6F5SO2-NHIPA that showed exclusively a tautomer emission with a long wavelength, all other X-NHIPA molecules were predicted to involve in the reversible ESIPT and hence exhibit a dual normal and tautomer emissions behavior, in good agreement with the experimental observations. In polar solvents, it is expected that all compounds show dual normal and tautomer emissions. The nearly equal intensities of the normal and tautomer emissions can lead to the generation of the white lights with the potential in lighting applications.

Abstract
Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is the most widely used commercial brominated flame retardant. However, the mechanisms underlying the photodegradation of TBBPA remain unclear. Here we use density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory to examine the photodegradation of the two species of TBBPA in water: TBBPA (neutral form) and TBBPA- (anionic form). The study includes direct photodegradation and indirect photodegradation of TBBPA with ·OH and 1O2. The results of the calculations indicate that indirect photodegradation of TBBPA and TBBPA- with ·OH occurs via OH-addition and Br-substitution. All of the OH-addition and Br-substitution pathways are exothermic. Indirect photodegradation of TBBPA and TBBPA- by 1O2 proceeds via H abstraction by 1O2.Ea was higher for H abstraction of TBBPA than H abstraction of TBBPA-. The mechanisms for the direct photodegradation of TBBPA and TBBPA- include debromination, C1C7/C7C13 cleavage, and cyclization. CBr cleavage was observed in the optimized geometries of TBBPA and TBBPA- at the lowest excited triplet state. However, high Ea values and an endothermic nature indicated that C1C7/C7C13 cleavage and cyclization reactions were not the main pathways. OH-adducts, Br-substitution products, H-abstraction (by 1O2) products, and debromination products were the main products of photodegradation of TBBPA. These findings provide useful information for risk assessment and pollution control of brominated flame retardants.

Being toxic and detrimental to human health, sensing of cyanide (CN-), fluoride (F-), chloride (Cl-), bromide (Br-), nitrate (NO3 -), acetate (CH3COO-), and bisulfate (HSO4 -) is performed by a boron-based molecular receptor, N,N,N,3,5-pentamethyl-4-{2-thia-9-boratricyclo[8.4.0.03,8]tetradeca-1(10),3(8),4,6,11,13-hexaen-9-yl}anili-nium (1), and the three newly designed receptors from it. Thermodynamics, electronic structure, and photophysical properties are computed by employing density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) to explore selective sensing of these anions and its mechanism. Free-energy changes (ΔG) and binding energies (ΔE) suggest that among these anions, only binding of CN- and F- is thermodynamically feasible with a very strong binding affinity with the receptors. Boron atoms containing positive natural charges act as the electrophilic centers to bind the anions involving a 2p-2p orbital overlap resulting in charge transfer. In the receptor-analyte complexes with CN- and F-, fluorescence is quenched due to the intramolecular charge transfer transitions (π-π* transitions in the case of the receptors lead to fluorescence), internal conversion, and associated configurational changes. Among the six tested functionals, CAM-B3LYP/6-31G(d) is found to be the most accurate one. The designed receptors are better fluorescent probes for F- and CN-, demonstrating their importance for the practical utility.

Abstract
The twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state plays an important role in determining the performance of optoelectronic devices. However, for some nonfluorescent TICT molecules, the "invisible" TICT state could only be visualized by modifying the molecular structure. Here, we introduce a new facile pressure-induced approach to light up the TICT state through the use of a pressure-related liquid-solid phase transition of the surrounding solvent. Combining ultrafast spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations, it reveals that the "invisible" TICT state can emit fluorescence when the rotation of a donor group is restricted by the frozen acetonitrile solution. Furthermore, the TICT process can even be effectively regulated by the external pressure. Our study offers a unique strategy to achieve dual fluorescence behavior in charge transfer molecules and is of significance for optoelectronic and biomedical applications.
