Roaming Dynamics and Conformational Memory in Photolysis of Formic Acid at 193 nm Using Time-resolved Fourier-transform Infrared Emission Spectroscopy

In photodissociation of trans-formic acid (HCOOH) at 193 nm, we have observed two molecular channels of CO + H₂O and CO₂ + H₂ by using 1 μs-resolved Fourier-transform infrared emission spectroscopy. With the aid of spectral simulation, the CO spectra are rotationally resolved for each vibrational state (v = 1-8). Each of the resulting vibrational and rotational population distributions is characteristic of two Boltzmann profiles with different temperatures, originating from either transition state pathway or OH-roaming to form the same CO + H₂O products. The H₂O roaming co-product is also spectrally simulated to understand the interplay with the CO product in the internal energy partitioning. Accordingly, this work has evaluated the internal energy disposal for the CO and H₂O roaming products; especially the vibrational-state dependence of the roaming signature is reported for the first time. Further, given a 1 μs resolution, the temporal dependence of the CO/CO₂ product ratio at v ≥ 1 rises from 3 to 10 of study, thereby characterizing the effect of conformational memory and well reconciling with the disputed results reported previously between absorption and emission methods.

Formic acid dimers in a nitrogen matrix

Formic acid (HCOOH) dimers are studied by infrared spectroscopy in a nitrogen matrix and by ab initio calculations. We benefit from the use of a nitrogen matrix where the lifetime of the higher-energy (cis) conformer is very long (∼11 h vs. 7 min in an argon matrix). As a result, in a nitrogen matrix, a large proportion of the cis conformer can be produced by vibrational excitation of the lower-energy (trans) conformer. Three trans-trans, four trans-cis, and three cis-cis dimers are found in the experiments. The spectroscopic information on most of these dimers is enriched compared to the previous studies in an argon matrix. The cis-cis dimers of ordinary formic acid (without deuteration) are reported here for the first time. Several conformational processes are obtained using selective excitation by infrared light, some of them also for the first time. In particular, we report on the formation of cis-cis dimers upon vibrational excitation of trans-cis dimers. Tunneling decays of several dimers have been detected in the dark. The tunneling decay of cis-cis dimers of formic acid as well as the stabilization of cis units in cis-cis dimers is also observed for the first time.

Radiation-induced transformations of matrix-isolated formic acid: evidence for the HCOOH → HOCO + H channel

HOCO radicals are produced under X-ray irradiation of isolated formic acid at low temperatures, and possible mechanisms and astrochemical implications are discussed.

Predicted organic compounds derived from rare gas atoms and formic acid

Organic insertion compounds of rare gas atoms into formic acid were investigated at the MP2(full)/aug-cc-pVTZ level. There are two configuration isomers for each molecule based on the location of H atoms: trans- and cis-HCOORgH (Rg = Ar, Kr, Xe). Their structures, harmonic frequencies, and decomposition energies have been calculated using the above ab initio method. Using trans-HCOOXeH as an example, natural bond orbital (NBO) and atom-in-molecules (AIM) analyses were also carried out to explore the binding nature of the rare gas atoms. The formation mechanism of molecular orbitals is also presented in this paper. The presented results indicate that HCOOXeH and HCOOKrH are potential candidates for experimental observation.

Transient H2O Infrared Satellite Peaks Produced in UV Irradiated Formic Acid Doped Solid Parahydrogen

We report newly identified satellite features of the R(0) rovibrational transition of all the fundamental modes of HDO and the ν3 mode of H2O measured via FTIR spectroscopy immediately after the 193 nm in situ photolysis of formic acid (HCOOH and DCOOD) in solid parahydrogen. The intensities of these satellite features decay slowly with a time constant of τ = 121(7) min after photolysis, even when the sample is maintained below 2 K. We propose that the van der Waals complex H···H2O (H···HDO) is the carrier of the satellite peaks and that these metastable complexes are produced after the low-temperature tunneling reaction of the OH (OD) photoproduct with the parahydrogen host.
