Impact of Tamm plasmon structures on fluorescence and optical nonlinearity of graphene quantum dots

Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) are crucial in biomedicine for sensitive biosensing and high-resolution bioimaging and in photonics for their nonlinear optical properties. Integrating GQDs with photonic structures enhances optical properties by optimizing light-matter interactions and enabling precise control over their emission wavelengths. In this work, we explore a facile synthesis method for GQDs by pulsed laser irradiation in chlorobenzene and highlight the transformative potential of Tamm Plasmon Cavity (TPC) structures for tuning and amplifying the photoluminescence and nonlinear optical properties of GQDs. The characterization of GQDs revealed their exceptional properties, including efficient optical limiting and stable photoluminescence. The study demonstrated that the TPC structure significantly amplifies nonlinear optical effects due to the high light-matter interaction, indicating the potential for advanced optical systems, including optical limiters and nonlinear optical devices. Furthermore, introducing GQDs into the TPC structure leads to a significant enhancement and tuning of fluorescence emission. The Purcell effect, in combination with the confined electromagnetic fields within the TPC, increases the spontaneous emission rate of GQDs and subsequently enhances the fluorescence intensity. This enhanced and tunable fluorescence has exciting implications for high-sensitivity applications such as biosensing and single-molecule detection.

Optical Responses of Localized and Extended Modes in a Mesoporous Layer on Plasmonic Array to Isopropanol Vapor

Mesoporous silica features open and accessible pores that can intake substances from the outside. The combination of mesoporous silica with plasmonic nanostructures represents an interesting platform for an optical sensor based on the dependence of plasmonic modes on the refractive index of the medium in which metallic nanoparticles are embedded. However, so far only a limited number of plasmonic nanostructures are combined with mesoporous silica, including random dispersion of metallic nanoparticles and flat metallic thin films. In this study, we make a mesoporous silica layer on an aluminum nanocylinder array. Such plasmonic arrangements support both localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) and extended modes which are the result of the hybridization of LSPRs and photonic modes extending into the mesoporous layer. We investigate in situ optical reflectance of this system under controlled pressure of isopropanol vapor. Upon exposure, the capillary condensation in the mesopores results in a gradual spectral shift of the reflectance. Our analysis demonstrates that such shifts depend largely on the nature of the modes; that is, the extended modes show larger shifts compared to localized ones. Our materials represent a useful platform for the field of environmental sensing.

Multifunctional Reversible Fluorescent Controller Based on a One-Dimensional Photonic Crystal

With the aim to build a multifunctional solid fluorescent controller, a one-dimensional photonic crystal and CdSe fluorescent single layer were separated on the opposite sides of quartz substrates. The separation structure remarkably facilitates materials selection for the fluorescent controller, which allows one to freely choose the fluorescent substance and constituents of 1DPC from a wide range of available materials with the best desirable properties and without caring about the interactions between them. Fluorescent enhancement and weakened effect were successfully achieved when the excitation light was irradiated from different sides of the fluorescent device. In addition, the fluorescent intensity can be altered reversibly along with environmental pH values according to the change of a pH-responsive one-dimensional photonic crystal layer, which is quite different from a previously reported quenching mode. Meanwhile, the original position of the photonic stop band is essential for deciding what pH value would produce the best effect of fluorescent control. It provides a way to adjust the effect of fluorescent controller according to certain applied situations. The mechanism of fluorescent variation was confirmed by the assistance of a finite-difference time-domain simulation. Furthermore, this device is also able to modulate fluorescent wavelength and full width at half-maximum by overlapping the photonic stop band and the emission of CdSe. Therefore, this method offers a universal strategy for the fabrication of fluorescent controllers.

Block copolymer self-assembly for nanophotonics

The ability to control and modulate the interaction of light with matter is crucial to achieve desired optical properties including reflection, transmission, and selective polarization. Photonic materials rely upon precise control over the composition and morphology to establish periodic interactions with light on the wavelength and sub-wavelength length scales. Supramolecular assembly provides a natural solution allowing the encoding of a desired 3D architecture into the chemical building blocks and assembly conditions. The compatibility with solution processing and low-overhead manufacturing is a significant advantage over more complex approaches such as lithography or colloidal assembly. Here we review recent advances on photonic architectures derived from block copolymers and highlight the influence and complexity of processing pathways. Notable examples that have emerged from this unique synthesis platform include Bragg reflectors, antireflective coatings, and chiral metamaterials. We further predict expanded photonic capabilities and limits of these approaches in light of future developments of the field.

Multilayer mirrored bubbles with spatially-chirped and elastically-tuneable optical bandgaps

We demonstrate the multifolding Origami manufacture of elastically-deformable Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) membranes that reversibly color-tune across the full visible spectrum without compromising their peak reflectance. Multilayer films composed of alternating transparent rubbers are fixed over a 300 μm wide pinhole and deformed by pressure into a concave shape. Pressure-induced color tuning from the near-IR to the blue arises from both changes in thickness of the constituent layers and from tilting of the curved DBR surfaces. The layer thickness and color distribution upon deformation, the band-gap variation and the repeatability of cyclic color tuning, are mapped through micro-spectroscopy. Such spatially-dependent thinning of the film under elastic deformation produces spatial chirps in the color, and are shown to allow reconstruction of complex 3D strain distributions.
