Abstract
Developing visible-light-driven fluorescent photoswitches in the solid state remains an enormous challenge in smart materials. Such photoswitches are obtained from salicylaldimines through excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and subsequent cis-trans isomerization strategies. By incorporating a bulky naphthalimide fluorophore into a Schiff base, three photoswitches achieve dual-mode changes (both in color and fluorescence) in the solid state. In particular, the optimal one generates triple fluorescence changing from green, to yellow and finally to orange upon visible-light irradiation. This switching process is fully reversible and can be repeated at least 10 times without obvious attenuation, suggesting its good photo-fatigue resistance. Mechanism studies reveal that the naphthalimide group not only enables the tuning of multicolor with an additional emission, but also induces a folded structure, reducing molecular stacking and facilitating ESIPT and cis-trans isomerization. As such, photopatterning, ternary encoding and transient information recording and erasing are successfully developed. The present study provides a reliable strategy for visible-light-driven fluorescent photoswitches, showing implications for advanced information encryption materials.

Abstract
The proton transfer dynamics of Schiff bases are of great importance due to the application potential. The excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) of photochromic salicylaldehyde azine (SAA) in solutions was investigated by experimental and computational methods. Two distinguished spectral bands are observed in transient absorption spectra upon the photoexcitation with 400 nm. From the delayed stimulated emission signals, the ESIPT process is determined to be within <200 fs. Subsequently, the photoprotonated products undergo the vibrational relaxation with several picoseconds and the following isomerization with tens of picoseconds. These processes are significantly affected by the polarity of the solvents. The longest component with nanosecond scale can be explained to the relaxation to the enol structure. According to our observations, the SAA molecules with symmetric double-hydrogen-bonding-centers undergo single proton transfer rather than double proton transfer and subsequent intramolecular isomerization.

Abstract
Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) has been widely employed for the design of a variety of functionality-led molecular systems. However, precise manipulation of the excited-state reaction is challenging. Herein, we report a new tactic for tuning ESIPT via incorporating an excited-state intramolecular charge transfer (ESICT) process. Specifically, three o-carborane derivatives, NaCBO, PaCBO, and PyCBO, were designed, where the 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-benzothiazole is a typical ESIPT unit functioning as an electron acceptor, and the electron-donating units are naphthyl-(Na), phenanthrenyl-(Pa), and pyrenyl-(Py), respectively. The architectures of the molecules are featured with a face-to-face alignment of the two units. Spectroscopy and theoretical calculation studies revealed that the electron-donating capacity of the donors and solvent polarity continuously modulate the ESIPT/ESICT energetics and dynamics, resulting in distinct emissions. Moreover, the molecules depicted not only highly porous structures but also very different fluorescent colors in the solid state, enabling highly selective film-based fluorescence sensing of mustard gas simulant, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide, with a detection limit of 50 ppb and a response time of 5 s. This work thus provides a reliable strategy for the creation of high-performance sensing fluorophores via ESIPT manipulation.

Abstract
Excited-state intramolecular hydrogen transfer on the triplet surface of salicylideneaniline derivatives has received much less attention than the corresponding ultrafast process on the singlet surface. To enhance the understanding of this triplet reactivity, the photochemical properties of a series of salicylidene-α-hydroxy acid salts with different substituents on the phenol moiety (1-3) were characterized. UV/vis absorption and phosphorescence measurements in ethanol revealed that 1-3 exist as both enol and keto tautomers, with the enol form being predominant. Irradiation of 1 at 310 nm in ethanol glass (77 K) yielded an absorption band with a λmax at ∼405 nm, which was assigned to the trans-keto tautomer (trans-1K). In contrast, laser flash photolysis of 1-3 in methanol or acetonitrile resulted in a transient absorption with λmax at 440-460 nm. This transient, which decayed on the microsecond timescale and was significantly shorter lived in methanol than in acetonitrile, was assigned to the triplet excited state (T1) of the cis-keto tautomer (cis-1K-3K) and residual absorption of trans-1K-3K by comparison with TD-DFT calculations. The assignment of the T1 of cis-1K was further supported by quenching studies with anthracene and 2,5-dimethyl-2,4-hexadiene. Laser flash photolysis of 1 in the temperature range of 173-293 K gave an activation barrier of 6.7 kcal/mol for the decay of the T1 of cis-1K. In contrast, the calculated activation barrier for cis-1K to undergo a 1,5-H atom shift to reform 1 was smaller, indicating that intersystem crossing of the T1 of cis-1K is the rate-determining step in the regeneration of 1.

Abstract
Salicylimines are versatile compounds in which an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer and torsional motions may set in upon photoexcitation. Here, we study N-(α-phenylethyl)salicylimine (PESA) to elucidate how the photochemical reaction pathways depend on the excitation wavelength and to what extent the relative photoproduct distribution can be steered towards a desired species. DFT structure and potential energy calculations disclose that the most stable ground-state conformer is an enol species and that the photodynamics may proceed differently depending on the excited state that is reached. With matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy, the predominance of the enol conformer of PESA is confirmed. Illumination of the cryogenic sample with different wavelengths shifts the ratio of enol and keto products, and by sequential irradiation a selective re- and depopulation is possible. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy further reveals that also at room temperature, the outcome of the photoreaction depends on excitation wavelength, and in combination with the calculations, it can be rationalized that the decisive step occurs within the first hundred femtoseconds. Since the ultrafast dynamics mostly match those of similar salicylimines, our findings might also apply to those systems and provide additional insight into their reported sensitivity on excitation energy.

Abstract
Three polymorphs of salicylideneaniline (SA) were prepared, and their photochromic behavior was examined using a recently developed single-crystal microscopic UV-vis spectroscopy approach. This system enabled us to acquire absorption data during the bleaching process as a function of temperature and visible light intensity. First, we demonstrated that, in contrast to the generally accepted assumption, the bleaching curves were notably influenced by the degree of photosaturation at the initial stage. By modifying our kinetic model to include the term representing the initial degree of photosaturation, we successfully obtained the kinetic parameters intrinsic to each crystal structure. Second, we further analyzed the kinetic parameters to show that the bleaching process was accelerated by visible light irradiation to a significantly higher degree than by thermal relaxation. The two bleaching-prompting effects were quantitatively compared between two photochromic polymorphs, α1 and α2; the long life of the photoproduct in α2 was attributed to efficient self-shielding from visible light irradiation enabled by its structural features. These results prompted us to reexamine the simple dualistic photochemical and thermal classification of photochromic systems and will provide a foundation for the precise structure-function analysis of crystalline materials, including SAs.

Abstract
We investigated the ultrafast photoisomerization of N-(2-methoxybenzylidene)aniline in the gas phase excited into the second singlet (S2) state by nonadiabatic surface-hopping dynamics calculations. Two trans isomers (1E and 1E') were taken into consideration in our dynamics simulation. Three conical intersections (CIs) were characterized in the optimization. The CI between S2 and the first singlet (S1) states presents a nearly planar structure, while the other two CIs (CItwist-I and CItwist-II) between S1 and the ground (S0) states show nearly perpendicular geometries. After two trans isomers excited to the S2 state, the torsion of the C-N bond connected the phenyl group and the stretch of the central bridging bond make the molecule reach CIplanar, and the S2/S1 hopping occurs. During the S1-state dynamics, the molecule moves to a S1/S0 CI (CItwist-I or CItwist-II) by the rotation of the central bridging bond. The cis isomer is obtained through a barrierless pathway in the S0 state with the torsion of the three bridging bonds. There is a main channel and an alternative one for the photoisomerization process of both trans isomers. CItwist-I and CItwist-II act as S1/S0 decay funnels in the main isomerization channels of 1E and 1E' isomers, respectively, and the photochemical processes of 1E and 1E' lead to different cis isomers.

Abstract
A new Schiff base compound, 3-(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylideneamino)phenol (abbreviated as BHAP) was synthesized and characterized by 1H- and 13C- nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopies. DFT/B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) calculations were undertaken in order to explore the conformational space of both the E- and Z- geometrical isomers of the enol-imine and keto-amine tautomers of the compound. Optimized geometries and relative energies were obtained, and it was shown that the most stable species is the E-enol-imine form, which may exist in four low-energy intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded forms (I, II, V, and VI) that are almost isoenergetic. These conformers were concluded to exist in the gas phase equilibrium with nearly equal populations. On the other hand, the infrared spectra of the compound isolated in a cryogenic argon matrix (10 K) are compatible with the presence in the matrix of only two of these conformers (conformers II and V), while conformers I and VI convert to these ones by quantum mechanical tunneling through the barrier associated with the rotation of the OH phenolic group around the C–O bond. The matrix isolation infrared spectrum was then assigned and interpreted with help of the DFT(B3LYP)/6-311++G(d,p) calculated infrared spectra for conformers II and V. In addition, natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis was performed on the most stable conformer of the experimentally relevant isomeric form (E-enol-imino conformer V) to shed light on details of its electronic structure. This investigation stresses the fundamental structural relevance of the O–H···N intramolecular H-bond in o-hydroxyaryl Schiff base compounds.

Abstract
With the combination of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer and trans-cis isomerization as microscopic molecular motions under light stimulus, multiple photodeformable processes are achieved in anil-poly(ethylene terephthalate) systems, including simple bending, dancing butterflies, and switches. The doping films can realize light-driven contraction as large as 70% and bending angle of about 141°, upon a simple stretching process. The internal mechanism is confirmed by transient absorption spectra, and the relationship between molecular structure and photocontrolled motion is investigated by theoretical calculations and crystal analysis. This work provides a convenient approach by utilizing anils to fabricate reversible actuations with desirable geometries, greatly contributing to the applications and manufacturing of soft robots and related research.

Abstract
Abstract
The crystals of N-salicylideneaniline (SA) and SA derivatives are classic functional materials that exhibit reversible colour changes (photochromism) and/or excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) fluorescence emission under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. In this study, a novel SA derivative was synthesised with an extended alkyl chain, N-(5-bromo-salicylidene)-3-aminoethylpyridine (5Br-SAEP). The photophysical properties of 5Br-SAEP were characterised in the crystalline state. The monohydrated crystal (1H) of 5Br-SAEP was dehydrated to form the anhydrous crystal (1A) at a relative humidity of less than 76%. The photochromic activity was switched by the dehydration phase transition from the non-photochromic 1H to the photochromic 1A. The quantum yield of fluorescence decreased significantly from 8% in 1H to 3% in 1A. The in situ change of photophysical properties occurred due to the change in the crystal structure. This indicated the potential of the solvated crystals of the SAEP derivatives for applications in novel switching or smart materials.

Abstract
The effects of substituent on excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and hydrogen bonding of N-(8-Quinolyl) salicylaldimine (QS) have been studied by theoretical calculation with DFT and TDDFT. The representative electron-withdrawing nitryl and electron-donating methoxyl were selected to analyze the effects on geometries, intramolecular hydrogen bond interaction, absorption/fluorescence spectra, and the ESIPT process. The configurations of the three molecules (QS, QS-OMe and QS-NO2) were optimized in the ground and excited states. The structure parameters, infrared spectra, hydrogen bond interactions, frontier molecular orbitals, absorption/fluorescence spectra, and potential curves have cross-validated the current results. The results show that the introduction of substituent results in a bathochromic-shift of the absorption and fluorescence spectra with large Stokes shift, and is more beneficial to the ESIPT process. The current work will be beneficial to the improvement of ESIPT properties and deepen understanding of the mechanism of ESIPT process.

Abstract
The bis-(anil) mol-ecule of the title compound, C47H32N2O2·C6H4Cl2, contains two anil fragments in the enol-enol form, exhibiting intra-molecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds. The two hy-droxy-naphthalene ring systems are approximately parallel to each other with a dihedral angle of 4.67 (8)° between them, and each ring system makes a large dihedral angle [55.11 (11) and 48.50 (10)°] with the adjacent benzene ring. In the crystal, the bis-(anil) mol-ecules form an inversion dimer by a pair of weak C-H⋯O inter-actions. The dimers arrange in a one-dimensional column along the b axis via another C-H⋯O inter-action and a π-π stacking inter-action between the hy-droxy-naphthalene ring system with a centroid-centroid distance of 3.6562 (16) Å. The solvent 1,2-di-chloro-benzene mol-ecules are located between the dimers and bind neighbouring columns by weak C-H⋯Cl inter-actions. Theoretical prediction of potential biological activities was performed, which suggested that the title anil compound can exhibit histone de-acetyl-ase SIRT2, histone de-acetyl-ase class III and histone de-acetyl-ase SIRT1 activities, and will act as inhibitor to aspulvinone di-methyl-allyl-transferase, de-hydro-l-gulonate deca-rboxylase and gluta-thione thiol-esterase.

Abstract
Thermofluorochromism and photochromism of salicylideneaniline (SA) in alcohol were investigated using steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence and absorption spectroscopy. The planar trans-enol form of SA in alcohols is converted into the twisted trans-enol form on heating. This conversion results change in the emission maximum from the 530 to the 440 nm region with an increase in fluorescence intensity, which confirms the absence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding between imine nitrogen and phenolic hydrogen in the twisted trans-enol form. The activation barrier for thermal-induced formation of the twisted trans-enol form in methanol was determined experimentally and was found to be 20.15 ± 2.22 kcal/mol. The rotation of the phenolic C7-C8 and C7-N1 bond followed by breaking of the intramolecular hydrogen bond and formation of an intermolecular hydrogen bond with alcohol solvent molecules results in the thermally stable twisted trans-enol form in alcohol solvents. The biexponential nature of the fluorescence decay of the twisted trans-enol form of SA confirms that the emission originates from multiple (π-π* and n-π*) excited states. On photolysis under UV light, the twisted trans-enol form is converted back into the planar trans-enol form. The time-resolved absorption and excitation-resolved fluorescence spectrum of SA in methanol confirm the existence of the twisted cis-keto form as a transient photochromic intermediate in the light-induced planarization of SA in alcohols. In alcohols, an interplay between the intra- and intermolecular hydrogen-bonding controls excited-state reaction dynamics and conformational relaxation of SA, which are responsible for the photochromism of salicylideneaniline.

Abstract
Ground state intramolecular proton transfer process has been comprehensively investigated in three salicylideneaniline Schiff base derivatives (SB1, SB2, and SB3) using experimental and theoretical methods. It has been confirmed that all the three Schiff base molecules in the ground electronic state exist in the enol form in non-polar and polar aprotic solvents. Keto form is being populated by the polar protic solvent through ground state intramolecular proton transfer (GSIPT) process. Ground state equilibrium between the enol and keto tautomers for SB1 and SB3 is mainly governed by the proton donating ability of the solvent. Ground state equilibria between the enol and keto tautomers of SB2 which is a positional isomer of SB3 is governed by the polarity and proton donating ability of the solvents. Excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process is also evidenced in all the three Schiff base molecules. Theoretical calculations at the B3LYP/cc-pVDZ level in the gas phase and in different solvents using polarisable continuum model (PCM) have failed to establish the GSIPT process. Microsolvation of individual enol and keto conformers has been investigated considering upto three solvent molecules. The energetics of the individual conformers together with the corresponding transition state have been calculated. It has been confirmed that the keto conformer is more stable compared to the enol conformer in microsolvated cluster of three methanol molecules. Lowering of activation energy for the enol to keto tautomerisation in the presence of methanol also supports the experimental observation for GSIPT process. TDDFT/B3LYP/cc-pVDZ single point calculations for microsolvated clusters of enol and keto form of the Schiff base molecules exhibit an excellent agreement with the experimentally obtained absorption spectra. Difference in spectral nature of the Schiff base molecules has been explained using natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. Quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) has also been utilised to understand the GSIPT process in detail.

Abstract
The ultrafast photoinduced processes of salicylidene-2-anthrylamine (2-AntSA) in acetonitrile solution have been investigated using DFT/TD-DFT static electronic structure calculations and excited state ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Two different isoenergetic enol ground-state structures with suitable geometry for excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) where chosen for the excited-state dynamics. The S1 relaxed potential energy profiles for the excited state intramolecular proton transfer and the N[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bond isomerization reactions predict that both reactions occur over an energy barrier and that they are competitive processes in the deactivation of the Franck-Condon state. The photodynamic simulations show that the ESIPT occurs in the femtosecond time scale for both conformers (77 and 213 fs for IA and IIA, respectively) and that the speed is modulated by the ability of the conformers to evolve toward a planar conformation in the S1 state. The trajectories predict two conical intersections which provide nonradiative relaxation pathways to the S0 state. The first one is located in the twisted enol region, where the proton transfer process is unlikely, and only occurs for the conformer IIA in a time scale ≥600 fs. The second conical intersection is located in the cis-keto region, and represents an effective depopulation channel toward the trans-keto form. All our results are in remarkably good agreement with experiments.

Abstract
The photophysical properties of the Schiff base family are crucial for their applications such as molecular switches and molecular memories. However, it was found that the photophysical behavior is not uniform for all Schiff base molecules, which shows a significant substituent dependent property. In this article, we studied the photoisomerization mechanism of one Schiff base chlorosubstituted derivative 2-(1-(methylimino)methyl)-6-chlorophenol by employing geometrical optimization, energy profiles scanning, and on-the-fly dynamical simulations. Three types of minimum energy conical intersections were located on the S1/S0 crossing seam, with two characterized by twisting motion of the C=N bond and one featured with the excited state intramolecular proton transfer process and then twisting motion around the C=C bond [excited-state intramolecular proton transfer process (ESIPT)-then-twisting]. By a combination of the dynamics simulation results with the energy profiles scanned along with the ESIPT coordinate, it was found that the photophysical property of the targeted molecule is different from that of most Schiff base members, which prefer to decay by a twisting motion around the C=N bridge bond rather than the ESIPT-then-twisting channel. The minor ESIPT channel is probably governed by a tunneling mechanism. The proposed deactivation mechanism can provide a reasonable explanation for the observations in the experiment and would provide fundamental indications for further design of new and efficient photochromic products.

Abstract
We have found that a series of N-(5-bromosalicylidene) alkylamines exhibited distinct chromic behaviour depending on the parity of their alkyl chain length. A group with an even number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain showed photochromism, while another group with odd number showed thermochromism.

Abstract
Advances in the field of supramolecular chemistry have made it possible, in many situations, to reliably engineer soft materials to address a specific technological problem. Particularly exciting are "smart" gels that undergo reversible physical changes on exposure to remote, non-invasive environmental stimuli. This review explores the development of gels which are transformed by heat, light and ultrasound, as well as other mechanical inputs, applied voltages and magnetic fields. Focusing on small-molecule gelators, but with reference to organic polymers and metal-organic systems, we examine how the structures of gelator assemblies influence the physical and chemical mechanisms leading to thermo-, photo- and mechano-switchable behaviour. In addition, we evaluate how the unique and versatile properties of smart materials may be exploited in a wide range of applications, including catalysis, crystal growth, ion sensing, drug delivery, data storage and biomaterial replacement.

Abstract
Ultrafast photoisomerization reactions generally start at a higher excited state with excess of internal vibrational energy and occur via conical intersections. This leads to ultrafast dynamics which are difficult to investigate with a single transient absorption spectroscopy technique, be it in the ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) or infrared (IR) domain. On one hand, the information available in the UV-vis domain is limited as only slight spectral changes are observed for different isomers. On the other hand, the interpretation of vibrational spectra is strongly hindered by intramolecular relaxation and vibrational cooling. These limitations can be circumvented by fusing UV-vis and IR transient absorption spectroscopy data in a multiset multivariate curve resolution analysis. We apply this approach to describe the spectrodynamics of the ultrafast cis-trans photoisomerization around the C-N double bond observed for aromatic Schiff bases. Twisted intermediate states could be elucidated, and isomerization was shown to occur through a continuous complete rotation. More broadly, data fusion can be used to rationalize a vast range of ultrafast photoisomerization processes of interest in photochemistry.

Abstract
Controlling the molecular assembling and nanomorphology of organic semiconductors is crucial to obtain high-performance electronic devices. In this work, we have first reported novel superlong salicylideneaniline nanobelts (mHBA) using the magnetic nanoparticle-assisted self-assembly process. Our results show that magnetic nanoparticles will obviously influence the self-assembly behavior, nanomorphology, and crystal structure of molecular HBA. Moreover, the intensity of fluorescence mHBA exhibits decreasing and increasing patterns, with the increase in temperature over a wide temperature range of 8 to 295 K. To elucidate the origin of tautomer forms, the ground and excited states of mHBA were experimentally and theoretically studied. Our results suggest that superlong HBA nanobelts provide a promising intelligent fluorescent thermometer and an organic field-effect transistor.

Abstract
The synthesis and photophysical properties of three tris(N-salicylideneaniline) (TSA) compounds containing 1,3,5-triarylbenzene, -tristyrylbenzene, and -tris(arylethynyl)benzene core units are reported. The TSA compounds underwent efficient excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) in solution and in solid state due to the preformed C=N⋅⋅⋅H-O hydrogen-bonded motifs of the structures. Steady-state fluorescence emission spectra of the TSA molecules revealed dual bands only in DMSO, and large Stokes shifts in other polar aprotic and protic solvents. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopic measurements in THF revealed lifetime values in the range of 14-16 ps for the excited-state keto-tautomer. The TSA compounds are also responsive to metal ions (Cu2+ and Zn2+ ) in DMSO, exhibit enhanced aggregate-induced emission (AIE) properties in DMSO/water mixtures, and are highly luminescent in the solid state.

Abstract
We employ transient absorption from the deep-UV to the visible region and fluorescence upconversion to investigate the photoinduced excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer dynamics in a biologically relevant drug molecule, 2-acetylindan-1,3-dione. The molecule is a ß-diketone which in the electronic ground state exists as exocyclic enol with an intramolecular H-bond. Upon electronic excitation at 300 nm, the first excited state of the exocyclic enol is initially populated, followed by ultrafast proton transfer (≈160 fs) to form the vibrationally hot endocyclic enol. Subsequently, solvent-induced vibrational relaxation takes place (≈10 ps) followed by decay (≈390 ps) to the corresponding ground state.

Abstract
A novel biphotochromic compound (BPC) with two photochromic fragments, namely spironaphthopyran and hydroxyazomethine, was synthesized and studied by nanosecond laser flash photolysis using the excitation wavelengths of 337, 430, 470 and 500 nm in methanol and toluene. The photoexcitation of BPC results in the formation of at least two colored transients. The first one is the merocyanine form B (the maximum in the absorption spectrum is near 600 nm and the lifetime is 0.1 and 0.05 s in methanol and toluene, respectively) due to the spiro-bond break followed by isomerization. The second one is the trans-keto form A(Kt) (the maximum in the absorption spectra is near 480 nm and the lifetime is 0.1 and 5 ms in methanol and toluene, respectively) as a result of cis-enol or cis-keto tautomer transformations. The relative yields of B and A(Kt) depends essentially on the wavelength of excitation. The form A(Kt) is the key transient formed under excitation with the visible light, whereas its yield under excitation with UV light is comparable with that of B. The specific solvation by methanol molecules favors the spirocycle opening even under visible light excitation. The results obtained for novel BPC were compared with those for other BPC where the same fragments are combined in such a way that the form B is the major one under excitation with UV light whereas it virtually is not observed under visible light excitation. The difference in both BPC is discussed in terms of conjugation (π-coupling) between photochromic fragments.

Abstract
Memory devices operating due to the fast proton transfer (PT) process are proposed by the means of first-principles calculations. Writing information is performed using the electrostatic potential of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Reading information is based on the effect of the local magnetization induced at the zigzag graphene nanoribbon (Z-GNR) edge-saturated with oxygen or the hydroxy group-and can be realized with the use of giant magnetoresistance (GMR), a magnetic tunnel junction or spin-transfer torque devices. The energetic barriers for the hop forward and backward processes can be tuned by the distance and potential of the STM tip; this thus enables us to tailor the non-volatile logic states. The proposed system enables very dense packing of the logic cells and could be used in random access and flash memory devices.
