Abstract
Functionalized ordered mesoporous silica materials are commonly investigated for applications such as drug release, sensing, and separation processes. Although, various homopolymer functionalized responsive mesopores are reported, little focus has been put on copolymers in mesopores. Mesoporous silica films are functionalized with responsive and orthogonally charged block-co-oligomers. Responsive 2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-block-2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphate (DMAEMA-b-MEP) block-co-oligomers are introduced into mesoporous films using controlled photoiniferter initiated polymerization. This approach allows a very flexible charge composition design. The obtained block-co-oligomer functionalized mesopores show a complex gating behavior indicating a strong interplay between the different blocks emphasizing the strong influence of charge distribution inside mesopores on ionic pore accessibility. For example, in contrast to mesopores functionalized with zwitterionic polymers, DMAEMA-b-MEP block-co-oligomer functionalized mesopores, containing two oppositely charged blocks, do not show bipolar ion exclusion, demonstrating the influence of the chain architecture on mesopore accessibility. Furthermore, ligand binding-based selective gating is strongly influenced by this chain architecture as demonstrated by an expansion of pore accessibility states for block-co-oligomer functionalized mesopores as compared to the individual polyelectrolyte functionalization for calcium induced gating.

Abstract
The generation of polymer brushes by surface-initiated controlled radical polymerization (SI-CRP) techniques has become a powerful approach to tailor the chemical and physical properties of interfaces and has given rise to great advances in surface and interface engineering. Polymer brushes are defined as thin polymer films in which the individual polymer chains are tethered by one chain end to a solid interface. Significant advances have been made over the past years in the field of polymer brushes. This includes novel developments in SI-CRP, as well as the emergence of novel applications such as catalysis, electronics, nanomaterial synthesis and biosensing. Additionally, polymer brushes prepared via SI-CRP have been utilized to modify the surface of novel substrates such as natural fibers, polymer nanofibers, mesoporous materials, graphene, viruses and protein nanoparticles. The last years have also seen exciting advances in the chemical and physical characterization of polymer brushes, as well as an ever increasing set of computational and simulation tools that allow understanding and predictions of these surface-grafted polymer architectures. The aim of this contribution is to provide a comprehensive review that critically assesses recent advances in the field and highlights the opportunities and challenges for future work.

Abstract
Surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET ATRP) integrated with mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) chemistry was, for the first time, employed for controlled grafting of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) brushes from carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The strategy initially involved deposition of a PDA layer by spontaneous self-polymerization, which is a benign and nonsurface specific way for anchoring 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide to form initiators on the CNTs. Dense and uniform PGMA brushes were then grown via ARGET ATRP using low concentration of Cu catalyst in different solvents. With abundant highly reactive epoxy groups, the PGMA-grafted CNTs could serve as a versatile platform for further modification or functionalization. Ethylenediamine ligands were facilely introduced, imparting the functionalized CNTs with record-high adsorption ability toward uranium ions among CNTs composites. The integrated strategy combining surface-initiated ARGET ATRP technique and PDA chemistry would provide new opportunities for surface engineering of nanomaterials for advanced applications.

Abstract
Rational design of effective antifouling polymers is challenging but important for many fundamental and applied applications. Herein we synthesize and characterize an N-acryloylaminoethoxyethanol (AAEE) monomer, which integrates three hydrophilic groups of hydroxyl, amide, and ethylene glycol in the same material. AAEE monomers were further grafted and polymerized on gold substrates to form polyAAEE brushes with well-controlled thickness via surface-initiated atomic transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP), with particular attention to a better understanding of the molecular structure-antifouling property relationship of hydroxyl-acrylic-based polymers. The surface hydrophilicity and antifouling properties of polyAAEE brushes as a function of film thickness are studied by combined experimental and computational methods including surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors, atomic force microscopy (AFM), cell adhesion assay, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. With the optimal polymer film thicknesses (∼10-40 nm), polyAAEE-grafted surfaces can effectively resist protein adsorption from single-protein solutions and undiluted human blood plasma and serum to a nonfouling level (i.e., <0.3 ng/cm(2)). The polyAAEE brushes also highly resist mammalian cell attachment up to 3 days. MD simulations confirm that the integration of three hydrophilic groups induce a stronger and closer hydration layer around polyAAEE, revealing a positive relationship between surface hydration and antifouling properties. The molecular structure-antifouling properties relationship of a series of hydroxyl-acrylic-based polymers is also discussed. This work hopefully provides a promising structural motif for the design of new effective antifouling materials beyond traditional ethylene glycol-based antifouling materials.

Abstract
Brush-modified silica hybrids have been synthesized by growing poly(2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (poly(DEA)) brushes on 120 nm diameter silica particles by surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ARGET ATRP). This is the first report of using SI-ARGET ATRP to synthesize poly(DEA) brushes. The kinetics of poly(DEA) brush growth in 4:1 v/v ethanol/water was monitored. The hydrodynamic diameter of the resulting brush-modified particles was dependent on the solution pH due to the weak polybasic nature of the brushes. Below the pKa of poly(DEA), the hydrodynamic diameter of the brush-modified particles increased with decreasing pH as a consequence of brush protonation, rearrangement and solvent uptake. This pH-response of the brushes was reversible and the hybrid particles exhibited significant hydrodynamic volume changes of up to 200% when the solution pH was cycled from pH 7 to pH 4.

Abstract
Poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) brushes were grafted onto microporous polysulfone (PSF) membranes via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) and then immobilized copper (II) ions on the modified membrane. Copper-loaded membranes exhibited excellent antibacterial properties with the added advantage of repeated use. The chemical composition and surface morphology of the functionalized membrane was characterized by ATR-FTIR, XPS, SEM, and AFM. The results showed that P4VP brushes clustered to rod-shaped covering and the sub-layer of membrane maintained sponge-like structures at the same time. Additionally, the kinetic study of SI-ATRP reaction revealed that the chain length of P4VP brushes increased linearly as the polymerization time increased. The antibacterial effects of copper-loaded CMPSF-g-P4VP membrane against Escherichiacoli were examined and the antibacterial efficiency reached 100% when 2.49wt.% of copper (II) ions was immobilized on membrane. The presented results could serve as a good starting point for the fabrication of antibacterial CMPSF membranes for waste-water treatment applications.
