Dynamics and vector correlations of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photodissociation of CO2 at 155 nm

In this work, the CO₂ Vacuum Ultraviolet (VUV) photodissociation dynamics of the dominant O(¹D) channel near 155 nm have been studied using Velocity Map Imaging (VMI) technique. Correlations among the transition dipole moment of the parent molecule, recoil velocity vector and rotational angular momentum vector of the photofragments were extracted from the anisotropic angular distributions of the images. The vector correlations extracted indicated a picture of photodissociation mainly via the excited 2¹A' (A) state. The transition dipole moment  lies in the bending molecular plane, and the j⃑ is pointing perpendicular to the plane, while the μ-v vectors angle is between 41°-45°. In addition, a clear trend was observed. As the product CO rotational state j increases, the spatial anisotropy parameter (β ≡ 2β20(20)) decreases. This j-dependent attenuation of spatial anisotropy parameter can be explained mainly with the consideration of non-axial recoil effect. These results are in good agreement with both theoretical work and previous experimental work.

Photochemistry of forbidden oxygen lines in the inner coma of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

Observations of the green and red-doublet emission lines have previously been realized for several comets. We present here a chemistry-emission coupled model to study the production and loss mechanisms of the O(¹S) and O(¹D) states, which are responsible for the emission lines of interest for comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The recent discovery of O₂ in significant abundance relative to water 3.80 ± 0.85% within the coma of 67P has been taken into consideration for the first time in such models. We evaluate the effect of the presence of O₂ on the green to red-doublet emission intensity ratio, which is traditionally used to assess the CO₂ abundance within cometary atmospheres. Model simulations, solving the continuity equation with transport, show that not taking O₂ into account leads to an underestimation of the CO₂ abundance within 67P, with a relative error of about 25%. This strongly suggests that the green to red-doublet emission intensity ratio alone is not a proper tool for determining the CO₂ abundance, as previously suggested. Indeed, there is no compelling reason why O₂ would not be a common cometary volatile, making revision of earlier assessments regarding the CO₂ abundance in cometary atmospheres necessary. The large uncertainties of the CO₂ photodissociation cross section imply that more studies are required in order to better constrain the O(¹S) and O(¹D) production through this mechanism. Space weather phenomena, such as powerful solar flares, could be used as tools for doing so, providing additional information on a good estimation of the O₂ abundance within cometary atmospheres.

Photochemistry. Evidence for direct molecular oxygen production in CO₂ photodissociation

Photodissociation of carbon dioxide (CO2) has long been assumed to proceed exclusively to carbon monoxide (CO) and oxygen atom (O) primary products. However, recent theoretical calculations suggested that an exit channel to produce C + O2 should also be energetically accessible. Here we report the direct experimental evidence for the C + O2 channel in CO2 photodissociation near the energetic threshold of the C((3)P) + O2(X(3)Σ(g)(-)) channel with a yield of 5 ± 2% using vacuum ultraviolet laser pump-probe spectroscopy and velocity-map imaging detection of the C((3)PJ) product between 101.5 and 107.2 nanometers. Our results may have implications for nonbiological oxygen production in CO2-heavy atmospheres.

Interplay between temperature-activated vibrations and nondipolar effects in the valence excitations of the CO₂ molecule

We report a study on the temperature dependence of the valence electron excitation spectrum of CO2 performed using nonresonant inelastic X-ray scattering spectroscopy. The excitation spectra were measured at the temperatures of 300 and 850 K with momentum-transfer values of 0.4-4.8 Å(-1), i.e., from the dipole limit to the higher-multipole regime, and were simulated using high-level coupled cluster calculations on the dipole and quadrupole level. The results demonstrate the emergence of dipole-forbidden excitations owing to temperature-induced bending mode activation and finite momentum transfer.
