Abstract
Biamphiphilic ionic liquids (BAILs) having amphiphilic cation and anion are thought to exhibit improved surface activity and colloidal stability to be utilized in different applications. For their effective use, a control over synergetic hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions between oppositely charged ions along with the possibility of tuning of hydrophobicity of the core of aggregates is required. Focusing on this, new BAILs comprising a bile salt anion, deoxycholate, [DC]-, and 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cations, [C nmim]+ ( n = 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12), were synthesized and characterized for their behavior at air-solution interface as well as in bulk. The synthesized BAILs exhibit high surface activity and self-assemble in the form of different architectures ranging from nanosheets (NSs), nanorods, and vesicles with varying hydrophobicities of the formed core of aggregates, depending on the length of alkyl chain of [C nmim]+. Analysis of various parameters obtained from investigated techniques suggested the changing role of [C nmim]+ from a counterion ( n = 2 and 4) to a cosurfactant ( n = 8 and 12) via a borderline case of [C6mim]+. This changeover in the nature of counterion controlled by hydrophobicity of alkyl chain resulted in morphological diversification in self-assembled architectures via varying set of interactions. It is believed that the present work would offer new perspectives in the self-assembly phenomenon of surfactants in general and surface active ionic liquids in particular to devise new strategies for inducing morphology-dependent functionality in self-assembled structures of BAILs.

Abstract
In this article, we report the study of structural and dynamical properties for a series of acetonitrile/propylammonium nitrate mixtures as a function of their composition. These systems display an unusual increase in intensity in their X-ray diffraction patterns in the low-q regime, and their 1H-NMR diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) spectra display unusual diffusivities. However, the magnitude of both phenomena for mixtures of propylammonium nitrate is smaller than those observed for ethylammonium nitrate mixtures with the same cosolvent, suggesting that the cation alkyl tail plays an important role in these observations. The experimental X-ray scattering data are compared with the results of molecular dynamics simulations, including both ab initio studies used to interpret short-range interactions and classical simulations to describe longer range interactions. The higher level calculations highlight the presence of a strong hydrogen bond network within the ionic liquid, only slightly perturbed even at high acetonitrile concentration. These strong interactions lead to the symmetry breaking of the NO3- vibrations, with a splitting of about 88 cm-1 in the ν3 antisymmetric stretch. The classical force field simulations use a greater number of ion pairs, but are not capable of fully describing the longest range interactions, although they do successfully account for the observed concentration trend, and the analysis of the models confirms the nano-inhomogeneity of these kinds of samples.

Abstract
The formation of ultra-thin 2D crystalline nano-sheets, -spindles and -ribbons by self-assembly of benzimidazolium-based single-tailed surface active ionic liquids (SAILs) is observed for the first time. The nature of formed bilayer architectures is governed by the functionalization of alkyl chains of SAILs via an amide or ester moiety.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are receiving increased attention from both academic and industrial research due to their immense application potential. These designer solvents are environmentally friendly in nature with tunable physicochemical properties. In the present investigation, we have studied the aggregation behavior of a short-chain IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium octylsulphate [Bmim][OS] within aqueous DESs using fluorescence, UV-vis, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and FT-IR spectroscopic techniques. We have prepared two DESs, ChCl-urea and ChCl-Gly, which are obtained by heating a mixture of an ammonium salt choline chloride with hydrogen bond donor urea or glycerol, respectively, in 1 : 2 molar ratios. The local microenvironment and size of the aggregates are obtained from steady state fluorescence (using pyrene and pyrene-1-carboxaldehyde as polarity probes) and DLS measurements, respectively. DLS results shows that IL [Bmim][OS] forms relatively larger micelles within the aqueous solution of DES ChCl-urea (avg. hydrodynamic radii = 209 nm) than compared to ChCl-Gly (avg. hydrodynamic radii = 135 nm). A significant decrease in the critical micelle concentration and increase in the aggregation number (N agg) are observed within DES solutions as compared to that in water, thus indicating that the micellization process of the IL [Bmim][OS] is much favored in the DES solutions. Molecular interactions of [Bmim][OS] in DESs are revealed from FT-IR spectroscopic investigation. Furthermore, these systems were applied to study the IL-drug binding of the antidepressant drug promazine hydrochloride (PH).

Abstract
New ester-functionalized surface active ionic liquids (SAILs) based on nicotine, [CnENic][Br] (n=8, 10 and 12), with bromide counterions have been synthesized, characterized and investigated for their self-assembly behavior in aqueous medium. Conductivity measurements in aqueous solutions of the investigated SAILs have provided information about their critical micelle concentration (cmc), and degree of counterion binding (β), where cmc was found to be 2-3-fold lower than homologous SAILs or conventional cationic surfactants. The inherent fluorescence of SAILs in the absence of any external fluorescent probe have shed light on cmc as well as interactions prevailing between the monomers in micelle at molecular level. The thermodynamic parameters related to micellization have been deduced from isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and conductivity measurements. 1H NMR, spin-lattice (T1) relaxation time and 2D 1H-IH ROESY measurements have been exploited to get detailed account of internal structure of micelle. The size and shape of the micelles have been explored using dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements. The synthesized SAILs have been found to be non-cytotoxic towards C6-Glioma cell line, which adds to the possible utility of these SAILs for diverse biological applications.

Abstract
This article demonstrates the interaction of a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) nucleotide, adenosine-5'-monophosphate disodium (AMP) with a cationic surface active ionic liquid (SAIL) 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazoium chloride (C12mimCl), and an anionic SAIL, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium n-octylsulfate ([C4mim][C8SO4]). Dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements and 1H NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) studies indicate that substantial interaction is taking place among the DNA nucleotide (AMP) and the SAILs. Moreover, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) suggests that SAILs containing micellar assemblies are transformed into larger micellar assemblies in the presence of DNA nucleotides. Additionally, the rotational motion of two oppositely charged molecules, rhodamine 6G perchlorate (R6G) and fluorescein sodium salt (Fl-Na), have been monitored in these aggregates. The rotational motion of R6G and Fl-Na differs significantly between SAILs micelles and SAILs-AMP containing larger micellar aggregates. The effect of negatively charged DNA nucleotide (AMP) addition into the cationic and anionic SAILs is more prominent for the cationic charged molecule R6G than that of anionic probe Fl-Na due to the favorable electrostatic interaction between the AMP and cationic R6G. Moreover, the influence of the anionic DNA nucleotide on the cationic and anionic SAIL micelles is monitored through the variation of the lateral diffusion motion of oppositely charged probe molecules (R6G and Fl-Na) inside these aggregates. This variation in diffusion coefficient values also suggests that the interaction pattern of these oppositely charged probes are different within the SAILs-nucleotide containing aggregates. Therefore, both rotational and translational diffusion measurements confirm that the DNA nucleotide (AMP) renders more rigid microenvironment within the micellar solution of SAILs.

Abstract
A novel photoresponsive surface active ionic liquid (SAIL) 1-(4-methyl azobenzene)-3-tetradecylimidazolium bromide ([C14mimAzo]Br) with azobenzene located in the headgroup was designed. Reversible vesicle formation and rupture can be finely controlled by photostimuli without any additives in the aqueous solution of the single-tailed ionic liquid. The photoisomerization of the azobenzene derivative was investigated by (1)H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrate that trans-[C14mimAzo]Br has less negative interaction energy, which is beneficial to aggregate formation in water. The incorporation of trans-azobenzene group increases the hydrophobicity of the headgroup and reduces the electrostatic repulsion by delocalization of charge, which are beneficial to the formation of vesicles. However, the bend of cis-azobenzene makes the cis-isomers have no ability to accumulate tightly, which induces the rupture of vesicles. Our work paves a convenient way to achieve controlled topologies and self-assembly of single SAIL.

Abstract
Two imidazolium-based surface active ionic liquids (SAILs) with photoresponsive cinnamate aromatic counterions, viz. 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium cinnamate ([C12mim][CA]) and 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium para-hydroxy-cinnamate ([C12mim][PCA]), were newly synthesized, and their self-assembly behaviors in aqueous solutions were systematically explored. Results of surface tension and conductivity measurements show that both [C12mim][CA] and [C12mim][PCA] display a superior surface activity in aqueous solutions compared to the common imidazolium-based SAIL, 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (C12mimBr), which implies the incorporation of cinnamate aromatic counterions can promote the micellar formation. Furthermore, [C12mim][CA] shows higher surface activity due to the higher hydrophobicity of its counterion in comparison to [C12mim][PCA] that has a hydroxyl group. Both hexagonal liquid-crystalline phase (H1) and cubic liquid-crystalline phase (V2) were constructed in the [C12mim][CA] aqueous solutions. In contrast, the [C12mim][PCA]/H2O system only exhibits a single hexagonal liquid-crystalline phase (H1) in a broad concentration region. These lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) phases were comprehensively characterized by polarized optical microscopy (POM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and rheometer. Investigation on the temperature-dependent self-assembly nanostructures demonstrates that the higher temperature leads to a looser arrangement. Under UV irradiation, trans-cis photoisomerization of the phenylalkene group results in inferior surface activity of the prepared SAILs in aqueous solution with higher cmc values. Moreover, UV light irradiation induces obvious change of the structural parameters without altering the LLC phases. This work is expected to enrich the investigations of phase behaviors formed in SAILs systems and receive particular attention due to their unique properties and potential applications in drug delivery, biochemistry, materials science, etc.

Abstract
The aggregation behavior of surface-active ionic liquids (SAILs) 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium m- and p-hydroxybenzoate (m-C12mimHB and p-C12mimHB) in water and ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) was investigated. Surface tension measurements indicate that the cmc values of SAILs in EAN are much higher than those in water, resulting from the weaker solvophobic effect of EAN, and the stronger stability of SAILs/EAN complexes proven by DFT calculations. Compared to 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium salicylate (C12mimSal), the effect of substituent position leads to weaker interactions between aromatic counterions and headgroups. The hexagonal liquid crystal (H1) phase formed by C12mimHB in water or EAN at a higher concentration was determined by polarized optical microscopy (POM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and rheology techniques. Structural parameters estimated from SAXS curves suggest that the higher SAILs concentration or temperature leads to a smaller lattice parameter (a0) and a denser arrangement of cylinders. For C12mimHB, the formation of the H1 phase in H2O is easier than that in EAN. Furthermore, compared to C12mimSal, C12mimHB exists over a broad region of the hexagonal liquid crystalline (H1) phase, which is due to the different position of the substituents on the aromatic ring of counterions. Therefore, the H1 phase of the lypotropic liquid crystals (LLCs) formed in the C12mimHB/H2O system exhibits excellent performance in uniformly dispersing multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Increasing the concentration of MWCNTs results in a larger lattice parameter (a0) value, indicating the integration of MWCNTs within the cylinders of the H1 phase. The rheological measurement results demonstrate that MWCNTs/LLCs composites are highly viscoelastic, and the presence of MWCNTs obviously strengthens the apparent viscosity of the H1 phase.

Abstract
The aggregation behaviors of surface active ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate in aqueous solutions were investigated by conductometry, densimetry, fluorimetry, (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance ((1)H NMR) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which confirmed two distinguished critical concentrations. The first critical concentration was believed to be the critical aggregation concentration (CAC), where two different types of aggregates were formed, namely, micelles with the size of 10 nm and vesicles with the size of 100 nm. The second critical concentration at two-fold CAC was suggested to be resulting from the insertion of the imidazolium cations into aggregates.

Abstract
Morpholinium-based amide-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) [C(n)AMorph][Br], where n = 8, 12, and 16, have been synthesized and characterized for their micellization behavior in aqueous medium using a variety of state of the art techniques. The adsorption and micellization behavior of [CnAMorph][Br] ILs at the air-solution interface and in the bulk, respectively, has been found to be much better compared to that observed for nonfunctionalized homologous ILs and conventional cationic surfactants, as shown by the comparatively higher adsorption efficiency, lower surface tension at the critical micelle concentraiton (γ(cmc)), and much lower critical micelle concentration (cmc) for [C(n)AMorph][Br] ILs. Conductivity measurements have been performed to obtain the cmc, degree of counterion binding (β), and standard free energy of micellization (ΔG(m)°). Isothermal titration calorimetry has provided information specifically about the thermodynamics of micellization, whereas steady-state fluorescence has been used to obtain the cmc, micropolarity of the cybotactic region, and aggregation number (N(agg)) of the micelles. Both dynamic light scattering and atomic force microscopy have provided insights into the size and shape of the micelles. 2D (1)H-(1)H nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy experiments have provided insights into the structure of the micelle, where [C16AMorph][Br] has shown distinct micellization behavior as compared to [C8AMorph][Br] and [C12AMorph][Br] in corroboration with observations made from other techniques.

Abstract
The self-assembly behavior of an imidazolium-based catanionic surfactant, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dodecylsulfate ([C4mim][C12H25SO4]), was investigated in water-ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) mixed solvents with different volume ratios. It is particular interesting that this simple surfactant could not only form lyotropic liquid crystals (LLC) with multimesophases, i.e., normal hexagonal (H1), lamellar liquid crystal (Lα), and reverse bicontinuous cubic phase (V2), in the water-rich environment but also act as an efficient low-molecular-weight gelator (LMWG) which gelated EAN-abundant binary media in a broad concentration range. The peculiar nanodisk cluster morphology of gels composed of similar bilayer units was first observed. FT-IR spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that strong H bonding and electrostatic interactions between EAN and the headgroups of [C4mim][C12H25SO4] are primarily responsible for gelation. The self-assembled gels displayed excellent mechanical strength and a thermoreversible sol-gel transition. It is for the first time that a rich variety of controllable ordered aggregates could be observed only by simply modulating the concentration of a single imidazolium-based catanionic surfactant or the ratio of mixed solvents. This environmentally friendly system is expected to have broad applications in various fields, such as materials science, drug delivery systems, and supramolecular chemistry.

Abstract
New anionic ionic liquid surfactants have been synthesized by replacing the sodium cation of Aerosol-OT (sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate, [Na]AOT) with various biocompatible moieties, such as 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium ([C4mim]), proliniumisopropylester ([ProC3]), cholinium ([Cho]), and guanidinium ([Gua]). The Aerosol-OT derived ionic liquids (AOT-ILs) were found fairly soluble in water and formed vesicles above a critical vesicle concentration (CVC) which depended upon the nature of cation, and followed the order: [ProC3]<[C4mim]<[Gua]<[Cho]<Na(+). The self-assembly process was characterized using surface tension (ST), isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), conductivity, dynamic light scattering (DLS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Unlike other AOT-ILs, a structural transformation has been observed for [C4mim]AOT above CVC, because of certain amphiphilic character in the cation [C4mim]. Thermodynamic parameters calculated from ITC and conductivity techniques revealed that the vesicle formation process is entropy driven for [C4mim]AOT, whereas the process is both enthalpy and entropy driven for other AOT-ILs. In order to check the versatility of synthesized AOT-ILs we have tested their dissolution behavior in a different class of ionic liquids. All the AOT-ILs were found fairly soluble in the hydrophilic IL, ethanolammonium formate (EOAF), whereas only [C4mim]AOT and [ProC3]AOT were found soluble in hydrophobic IL, [C4mim]Tf2N. Such combinations can have potential for construction of stable colloidal formulations or microemulsions in ionic liquid media.

Abstract
The interactions of methylene blue (MB), a redox active dye with surface active biamphiphilic ionic liquids (BAILs): 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dodecylsulfate, [C4mim][C12OSO3] and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium dodecylsulfate [C6mim][C12OSO3] have been investigated in aqueous medium to explore the candidature of surface active ionic liquids (ILs) in the field of dye-surfactant chemistry. Various thermodynamic, spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques such as conductivity, steady-state fluorescence, UV-visible absorption, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) have been used to obtain comprehensive information about MB-BAIL interactions. The presence of MB is seen to enhance the critical micellar concentration (cmc) of BAILs. The extent of interaction between the MB and BAILs varies with the concentration as well as the nature of BAILs. Different interactional phenomena such as the formation of ion-pair complexes, dimers, and solubilisation of monomers of MB have been observed in different concentration regimes of BAILs. A quantitative evaluation of the process of interaction between MB and BAILs has been made in terms of various micellar and binding parameters exploiting UV-visible absorption and CV measurements. Comparatively more hydrophobic [C6mim][C12OSO3] interacts strongly with MB as compared to [C4mim][C12OSO3] via hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions.

Abstract
Aggregates formed in an aqueous medium by three ionic liquids CnMImIbu made up of 1-alkyl-3-methyl-imidazolium cation (n = 4, 6, 8) and ibuprofenate anion are investigated. Dynamic light scattering (DLS), cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance measurements, and atom-scale molecular dynamics simulations are used to shed light on the main interactions governing the formation of the aggregates and their composition. At high concentration, mixed micelles are formed with a composition that depends on the imidazolium alkyl chain length. For the shortest alkyl chain, micelles are mainly composed of ibuprofenate anions with some imidazolium cations intercalated between the anions. Upon increasing the alkyl chain length, the composition of the aggregates gets enriched in imidazolium cations and aggregates of stoichiometric composition are obtained. Attractive interactions between these aggregates led to the formation of larger aggregates. As suggested by molecular simulations, these larger aggregates might constitute the early stage of phase separation. Transitions from micelles to vesicles or ribbons are observed due to dilution effects and changes in the chemical composition of the aggregates. We also show that aggregation can be probed using simple microscopic quantities such as radial distribution functions and average solvation numbers.
