Abstract
A green, simple, rapid, selective, and highly sensitive fluorimetric protocol has been established for quantitative analysis of the antibacterial drug moxifloxacin in its pure form and pharmaceutical dosage form. Owing to photoinduced electron transfer, moxifloxacin exhibits low native fluorescence in neutral media. Based on that, the developed fluorimetric protocol depends on inhibiting the photoinduced electron transfer effect of the nitrogen atom presented on the pyrrolidine ring in moxifloxacin by suitable adjusting of pH of the medium surrounding it, leading to its protonation. It is simply achieved by using 0.5 M acetic acid. This protonation enhances the native fluorescence of moxifloxacin, turning it into a stronger one. This fluorescence was measured at 498 nm after excitation at 295 nm with a linearity range from 10 to 60 ng mL-1 and a high correlation coefficient value of 0.9998. The fluorimetric approach could be applied for moxifloxacin detection with a limit of 0.89 ng mL-1 and a quantification limit of 2.69 ng mL-1. The developed method has been validated according to ICH guidelines, indicating high accuracy and excellent precision. Furthermore, the developed fluorimetric protocol was applied successfully for moxifloxacin analysis in pharmaceutical eye drops. As a result, the proposed protocol could be easily applied for quality control of moxifloxacin in different laboratories all over the world.

Abstract
Volumetric three-dimensional (3D) display technology based on static screens is a crucial branch of 3D displays. The essential component in volumetric 3D displays is selectively excitable display media that can generate voxels at any position. Here, we synthesized a series of organic photoswitch materials to meet the specific requirements of 3D display mediums. In these photoswitch solutions, voxels are activated ultrafast within tens of picoseconds at the intersection of two control lasers and faded rapidly within tens of milliseconds when switching light is turned off. An experimental volumetric 3D display system utilizing an organic photoswitch solution as a screen is demonstrated. The system not only achieves a dynamic 3D display but also enables 360° viewing. The volumetric 3D display system can display true 3D images without auxiliary glasses and is expected to be applicable in fields as diverse as virtual reality, medical imaging, architectural design, and military visualization.

Abstract
Naphthalene, white crystalline solid having polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with characteristic mothball order is naturally present in crucial oils of various plants. Naphthalene derivatives are extensive drug resources and are use as wetting agents, surfactants and as insecticides. These derivatives exhibit unique photo physical and chemical properties. These characteristics make them the most studied group of organic compounds. Naphthalene dyes have rigid plane and large π-electron conjugation. Therefor they have high quantum yield and excellent photostability. Naphthalene based fluorescence probes due to hydrophobic nature exhibit excellent sensing and selectivity properties towards anions and cations and also used as a part of target biomolecules. In conjugated probe system, introducing naphthalene moiety caused improvement in photo-stability. Therefore among various conjugated framework, naphthalene derivatives are considered excellent candidate for the construction of organic electronic appliances. These derivatives are useful for a variety of applications owing to their strong fluorescence, electroactivity and photostability. This article is based upon investigation of photophysical properties of naphthalene derivatives and fluorescence detecting probe of naphthalene. For photophysical properties the techniques under investigation are UV visible spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. Concentration dependent spectra and solvatochromic shifts on UV visible spectra are also part of discussion.

Abstract
Lipid droplets (LDs) and lysosomes, as two important subcellular organelles, play specific and indispensable roles in various cellular processes. The development of efficient LD- and lysosome-specific fluorescent bio-probes is of great importance. However, current commercial lipid droplet- (LD) and lysosome-specific fluorescent specific bio-probes often suffer from the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect, short absorption and emission wavelengths, poor photostability and low specificity. Herein, a typical ACQ luminogen BODIPY was directly conjugated to strong electron donating triarylamine units at its α-positions, giving near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent materials TPAB and 2TPAB with aggregation-induced emission (AIE). Both TPAB and 2TPAB nanoparticles were obtained by self-assembly, and showed NIR emissions, large Stokes shifts, good photostability and two-photon absorption. These nanoparticles presented remarkable bioimaging performances and were shown to specifically localize in LDs or lysosomes, respectively, depending on the number of triarylamine units attached. They have been successfully used to detect endogenous LD overproduction, and monitor abnormal activities of LDs/lysosomes, as well as real-time track the lipophagy process in cells. Their far NIR emission and two-photon excitation further supported their promising bioimaging application for lipid droplet tracking in liver tissue and live zebrafish larvae. Our work here enriches BODIPY based NIR AIE dyes and provides organelle specific bio-probes which are superior to currently used commercial ones.

Abstract
Gasotransmitters have gained significant recognition attributed to their evident biological impacts, and is accepted as a promising and less-explored area with immense research scope. The three-member family comprising of nitric oxide, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide as endogenous gaseous signaling molecules have been found to elicit a plethora of crucial biological functions, spawning a new research area. The sensing of these small molecules is vital to gain deeper insights into their functions, as they can act both as a friend or a foe in mammalian systems. The initial sections of the review present the physiological and pathophysiological roles of these endogenous gas transmitters and their synergistic interactions. Further, various detection approaches, especially the usage of fascinating features of 1,8-naphthalimide as fluorescent probe in the detection and monitoring of these small signaling molecules are highlighted. The current limitations and the future scope of improving the sensing of the three gasotransmitters are also discussed.

Abstract
Fluorescent probes have been powerful tools for visualizing and quantifying multiple dynamic processes in living cells. However, the currently developed probes are often constructed by conjugation a fluorophore with a recognition moiety and given signal-output after triggering with one singly target interest. Compared with the single-target-activated fluorescent probes mentioned above, the dual-target-activated ones, triggering with one target under stimulus (such as photoirradiation, microenvironment) or another targets, have the advantages of advoiding nonspecific activation and "false positive" results in complicated environments. In recent years, many dual-target-activated fluorescent probes have been developed to detect various biologically relevant species. In view of the importance of a comprehensive understanding of dual-target- activated fluorescent probes, a thorough summary of this topic is urgently needed. However, no comprehensive and critical review on dual target activated fluorescent probes has been published recently. In this review, we focus on the dual-target-activated fluorescent probes and briefly outline their types and current state of development. In each type, the chemical structure, proposed responsive mechanism and application of probes are highlighted. At last, the challenges and prospective opportunities of every type were proposed.

Abstract
Three probes for fluoride ion and trace water based on naphthalimide were designed and synthesized. A new sensing mechanism based on naphthalimide tautomerization induced by fluoride ion and water was explored in the aprotic organic solvent. In the fluoride ion sensing process, the probes exhibited a remarkable absorption peak centred at 560 nm in the visible range of 400-700 nm. When trace water presented, the newly formed absorption peak centred at 560 nm gradually disappeared. The sensitive colour variation of the probe also was used in fingerprint imaging. Accordingly, the significant changes in chemical shift of dept135 and 1HNMR spectrum confirmed the structural transformation of the probes with high contrast. Furthermore, this work also presented an optimization strategy for the sensitivity of the probe based on regulatory tautomerization.

Abstract
Leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) as an important proteolytic enzyme, has been mainly found in hepatobiliary cells, and overexpressed in hepatoma cells. Herein, a new highly selective red-emitting fluorescent probe (DCDHF-Ala) for LAP has been synthesized based on 2-dicyanomethyldiene-3-cyano-2, 5-dihydrofuran (DCDHF) as fluorophore, and alanine (Ala) as the detection group. More importantly, it's the first time to use Ala as a reactive group for LAP. DCDHF-Ala has a low detection limit (0.20 U/L), excellent water solubility and cell membrane permeability. In addition, the probe has been successfully applied to fluorescent imaging in cells and zebrafish. It's especially worth mentioning that, DCDHF-Ala has a high biosafety and enables a real-time detection of LAP levels in mice model. What's the most important is that DCDHF-Ala may be an effective tool to qualitatively monitor the upregulation of LAP induced by liver injury and liver cancer.

Abstract
In recent years, there have been many reports of fluorescent probes for multi-channel detection of Cys, Hcy and GSH. Particularly, reports of fluorescent probes using NBD (7-nitro-1,2,3-benzoxadiazole) or SNBD (7-nitro-1,2,3-benzothiadiazole) moieties as fluorophores are particularly common. Unfortunately, their 4-sulfhydryl derivatives exhibited negligible fluorescence, which makes them incapable of detecting GSH directly. Herein, by performing single selenium-for-oxygen atom replacement within 4-chloro-substituted NBD (NBD-Cl), we developed a small molecule fluorescent probe based on a single atom replacement strategy, which enables the probe to be used for simultaneously distinguishing Cys/Hcy and GSH, along with fluorescence imaging of Cys/Hcy and GSH in live cells from red and green emission channels, respectively.

Abstract
Two 1, 8-naphthalimide derivatives, 2-(2-ethylhexyl)-6-(2-(4-(5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)benzylidene)hydrazinyl)-1H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dione (named as NAOZ) and 2-(2-ethylhexyl)-6-(2-(4-(5-phenyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)benzylidene)hydrazinyl)-1H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dione (named as NATZ), containing hydrazone and thiadiazole/oxadiazole, were successfully synthesized. Compounds NAOZ and NATZ were further served as efficient reversible colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensors for fluoride ion over a wide range of other anions (Cl-, Br-, I-, NO3-, ClO4-, HSO4-, BF4-, and PF6- as their (C4H9)4N+ salts) because fluoride ion can deprotonate the hydrazone moiety, leading to the observed long-wavelength color change. Interestingly, CO2 can recover the charge transfer (CT) absorption and photoluminescence intensities of compound NAOZ/NATZ + F-, because CO2 can react with a small amount of water to form acids, which can provide protons.

Abstract
Real-time monitoring of the cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) activity in complex biological systems via a practical tool is highly sought after because of its significant role in the metabolism and bioactivation of various xenobiotics. Herein, according to slight differences in the 3D structure and substrate preference between CYP1A1 and its homologous CYP1A2, a series of novel ratiometric fluorescent probes were designed and synthesized using 1,8-naphthalimide because of its trait of naked-eye visualization and ratiometric fluorescence to achieve the detection of CYP1A1 in biological samples. Among these probes, NEiPN showed good water solubility, highly isoform selectivity and great sensitivity (LOD = 0.04874 nM) for CYP1A1 under simulated physiological conditions, which makes it favorable for monitoring CYP1A1 in vivo. Remarkably, NEiPN exhibited excellent reproducibility when it was used to detect the CYP1A1 content in human liver microsomes, which indicated that it has a great potential for quantifying the CYP1A1 content in real biological samples. Furthermore, NEiPN showed relatively low cytotoxicity and has been successfully applied in biological imaging in living cells and zebrafish. These findings indicate that NEiPN is capable of real-time monitoring of the activity of endogenous CYP1A1, which could provide support for CYP1A1-associated pathological processes.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that the cysteine hydropersulfide (Cys-SSH) as the sulfur donor is crucial to sulfur-containing cofactors synthesis. Recently, a selective and sensitive near-infrared ratiometric fluorescent chemosensor Cy-DiSe has been designed and synthesized to detect Cys-SSH spontaneously. Herein, by means of the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) approaches, the sensing mechanism has been thoroughly explored. According to our calculations, the experimental data have been reproduced. The results indicate the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) is the reason for changes in fluorescence wavelengths. Compared with the chemosensor Cy-DiSe, the larger energy gap of Cy induced by ICT mechanism leads to the blue-shift of the absorption and emission spectra, which guarantees that Cy-DiSe can become a ratiometric fluorescent chemosensor to detect Cys-SSH.

Abstract
In this article, a new “turn-off” fluorescent sensor N- n-butyl-4-{2-[(ethylimino)methyl]phenol}-1,8-naphthalimide (HL) for CuII ions is synthesized, which contains a 1,8-naphthalimide moiety as the fluorophore and a Schiff base as the recognition group. As expected, it exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity for detecting CuII ions over other common metal ions in acetonitrile–2-(4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazinyl)-ethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) (1:1 v/v, pH = 7.4) solution. In addition, the fluorescence intensity for HL showed a good linearity with the concentration of CuII ions in the range of 0.5–5.0 μM. The 2:1 binding stoichiometry between HL and CuII ions was established on the basis of combined fluorescence titrations, a Job’s plot, single-crystal X-ray analysis and mass spectrometry. The quenching response of HL toward CuII ions is attributed to the reverse photoinduced electron transfer mechanism. The proposed sensor HL is preliminarily applied to quantify CuII ions in water samples from the Yellow River and tap water.

Abstract
The use of light to regulate the chirality of supramolecular assemblies in a non-invasive manner remains a challenge. Herein, we report a novel photochromic pseudo[3]rotaxane based on a (R/S)-2,2'-binaphthyl secondary ammonium salt guest (2) and anthracene-bridged bis(dibenzo-24-crown-8) (1), which features a chirality transfer and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from 2 to 1. Benefiting from the photo-oxidation of anthracene, the induced circular dichroism (ICD) signals of (R/S)-2@1 can be switched off/on by irradiation with 365 nm UV light and heating. This noncovalent supramolecular assembly strategy provides us with unique opportunities to design and construct further smart photo-responsive chiral molecular switches.

Abstract
Abstract
In order to realize real-time monitoring of Cu2+, a new fluorescent probe HL, a Schiff base derivative of N-n-butyl-4-[2]-1,8-naphthalimide, has been designed and synthesized. In methanol-HEPES [2-(4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazinyl)-ethanesulfonic acid] solution (1:1, v/v, pH = 7.4) HL showed excellent selectivity towards Cu2+ over other common coexisting metal ions. The fluorescence intensity for HL showed a good linearity with the concentration of Cu2+ ions in the range of 0.5–5.0 μm. Based on combined fluorescence titration, Job’s plot analysis, and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry results, Cu2+ forms a 1:2 complex with L. The fluorescence intensity of HL exhibits significant quenching after binding with Cu2+, owing to the strong, intrinsic paramagnetic behavior of Cu2+. Ultimately, in order to test the performance of the synthesized probe, HL was preliminarily applied to the determination of Cu2+ in the Yellow River and in tap water with satisfying results.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a kind of gaseous signal molecule in many physiological processes. In order to detect H2S, a novel "turn on" fluorescent probe 6,12-dihydroxyperylene-1,7-dione (DPD) was designed and synthesized. The probe DPD is fluorescence silence, while the addition of H2S induces an obvious green fluorescence with an obvious color change from dark blue to yellow-green. The probe shows excellent selectivity, fast response (2.5min) and linear curve (0-90μM) in wide effective pH range (4-10). Competition experiments are also revealed in corresponding studies and the detection limit is 3.6μM. The response mechanism is proved to be the reduction of the probe by H2S, which is confirmed by 1H NMR. Furthermore, through the fluorescence turn-on signal toward H2S in Hela cells, probe DPD was successfully applied to monitor H2S in living Hela cells.

Abstract
A highly selective and sensitive fluorescent sensor for the determination of fructose is developed. The fluorescent sensor was prepared by incorporating a new naphthalimide dye with a planar structure as a selectophore and graphene oxide (GO) nanoplatelets as a quencher for rapid optical detection of fructose. The designed probe, made with the high fusion loop-containing dye, along with the GO nanoplatelets, detected fructose over the other monosaccharides very well. The proposed sensor displays a linear response range of 7 × 10-5 to 3 × 10-2 M with a low limit of detection of 23 × 10-6 M in solution at pH 7.4. This sensor shows a good selectivity towards fructose with respect to other saccharides. The proposed sensor was then applied to the determination of fructose in human plasma with satisfactory results.

Abstract
The development of effective detection methods for hexosaminidase is of great importance for the rapid screening of potential inhibitors in vitro and for the early diagnosis of related diseases ex vivo. In this study, the activatable fluorescent probes that are based on naphthalimide decorated with ethylene glycol units were synthesized using N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminide as a hexosaminidase-responsive group. When exposed to this enzyme, the glucoside-linked naphthalimide moiety of 1c can be cleaved quickly with significant changes in both color (from colorless to yellow) and fluorescence (from blue to green). Probe 1c shows better water-solubility and fluorescence properties than common substrate 4-methylumbelliferyl N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminide. Furthermore, the response mechanism of 1c to hexosaminidase was evaluated using HPLC analysis and TD-DFT calculations. Molecular docking was performed to investigate the interaction mode. In addition, 1c has successfully achieved the straightforward rapid discovery of effective hexosaminidase inhibitors. Fluorescence imaging experiments indicate that 1c has good cell safety and can be employed as a useful tool for detecting intracellular hexosaminidase activity.

Abstract
Endogenous H2S, considered to be involved in many physiological processes, has attracted more attention in fluorescence detection and bioimaging. Therefore, it is necessary to design probes with good biocompatibility and high bioavailability. In this study, a novel fluorescent probe, QN-1, based on azide group and quinoline derivatives was developed for detecting H2S. QN-1 can detect H2S specifically in aqueous phase, which indicated QN-1 has excellent water solubility. Besides, QN-1 shows excellent properties of higher selectivity and 11-fold fluorescence enhancement at 533 nm. Therefore, QN-1 with excellent properties can be used for cell imaging.

Abstract
Analytical methods often involve expensive instrumentation and tedious sample pretreatment for an analyte detection. Being toxic and detrimental to human health, sensing of cyanide (CN-), fluoride (F-), chloride (Cl-), bromide (Br-), nitrate (NO3 -), acetate (CH3COO-), and bisulfate (HSO4 -) is performed by a boron-based molecular receptor, N,N,N,3,5-pentamethyl-4-{2-thia-9-boratricyclo[8.4.0.03,8]tetradeca-1(10),3(8),4,6,11,13-hexaen-9-yl}anili-nium (1), and the three newly designed receptors from it. Thermodynamics, electronic structure, and photophysical properties are computed by employing density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) to explore selective sensing of these anions and its mechanism. Free-energy changes (ΔG) and binding energies (ΔE) suggest that among these anions, only binding of CN- and F- is thermodynamically feasible with a very strong binding affinity with the receptors. Boron atoms containing positive natural charges act as the electrophilic centers to bind the anions involving a 2p-2p orbital overlap resulting in charge transfer. In the receptor-analyte complexes with CN- and F-, fluorescence is quenched due to the intramolecular charge transfer transitions (π-π* transitions in the case of the receptors lead to fluorescence), internal conversion, and associated configurational changes. Among the six tested functionals, CAM-B3LYP/6-31G(d) is found to be the most accurate one. The designed receptors are better fluorescent probes for F- and CN-, demonstrating their importance for the practical utility.

Abstract
Biological thiols, especially low molecular weight thiols, including cysteine (Cys), homocysteine (Hcy) and glutathione (GSH), play a pivotal role in physiological and pathological systems. Thus, the detection of biothiols is highly important for early diagnosis of diseases and evaluation of disease progression. Herein, we developed a highly selective and sensitive ratiometric fluorescent 8-Cl BODIPY-based probe with high fluorescence quantum yields. The probe displayed a sensitive response to Cys and Hcy over other biothiols, which can be visualized colorimetrically and/or fluorescently. The probe was successfully applied to detect Cys in human plasma, demonstrating its great value for practical application in biological sample analysis.

Abstract
Photography was employed for the quantitation and differentiation of G- and V-series nerve agent mimics with the use of self-propagating cascades. Fluoride anion and thiols, released from a G-nerve agent mimic (i.e., diisopropyl fluorophosphate) and a V-nerve agent mimic (i.e., demeton-S-methyl), respectively, were used to initiate self-propagating cascades that amplify fluorescence signals exponentially in a ratiometric manner. A homemade LEGO dark-box, a cell phone, and 96-well plates were employed to collect photographs of the fluorescence response to the analytes. The photographic images were digitally processed in the 1931 xyY color space using a watershed and morphological erosion algorithm to generate chromaticity vs concentration calibration curves. We show that the two different amplification routines are selective for their analyte class and thus successfully discriminated the G- and V-series nerve agent mimics. Further, accurate concentrations of the analytes are determined using the chromaticity and LEGO approach given herein, thus demonstrating a simple and on-site constructible/portable device for use in the field.
