Mechanical-Bond-Induced Exciplex Fluorescence in an Anthracene-Based Homo[2]catenane

Collisional intermolecular interactions between excited states form short-lived dimers and complexes that lead to the emergence of excimer/exciplex emission of lower energy, a phenomenon which must be differentiated from the photoluminescence (PL) arising from the monomeric molecules. Although the utilization of noncovalent bonding interactions, leading to the generation of excimer/exciplex PL, has been investigated extensively, precise control of the aggregates and their persistence at very low concentrations remains a rare phenomenon. In the search for a fresh approach, we sought to obtain exciplex PL from permanent structures by incorporating anthracene moieties into pyridinium-containing mechanically interlocked molecules. Beyond the optical properties of the anthracene moieties, their π-extended nature enforces [π···π] stacking that can overcome the Coulombic repulsion between the pyridinium units, affording an efficient synthesis of an octacationic homo[2]catenane. Notably, upon increasing the ionic strength by adding tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate, the catenane yield increases significantly as a result of the decrease in Coulombic repulsions between the pyridinium units. Although the ground-state photophysical properties of the free cyclophane and the catenane are similar and show a charge-transfer band at ∼455 nm, their PL characters are distinct, denoting different excited states. The cyclophane emits at ∼562 nm (quantum yield ϕ_F = 3.6%, emission lifetime τ_s = 3 ns in MeCN), which is characteristic of a disubstituted anthracene-pyridinium linker. By contrast, the catenane displays an exciplex PL at low concentration (10^-8 M) with an emission band centered on 650 nm (ϕ_F = 0.5%, τ_s = 14 ns) in MeCN and at 675 nm in aqueous solution. Live-cell imaging performed in MIAPaCa-2 prostate cancer cells confirmed that the catenane exciplex emission can be detected at micromolar concentrations.

Anion-Induced Structural Diversity of Zn and Cd Coordination Polymers Based on Bis-9,10-(pyridine-4-yl)-anthracene, Their Luminescent Properties, and Highly Efficient Sensing of Nitro Derivatives and Herbicides

Luminescent coordination polymers (CPs) of Zn²⁺ or Cd²⁺ and bis-9,10-(pyridine-4-yl)-anthracene (BA) show different 1D and 2D topologies depending on the anion used in the precursor. Compounds {[Zn(μ₂-BA)(MeOH)₂(p-Tos)₂]} _n (1) and {[Zn(μ₂-BA)(MeOH)₂(CF₃CO₂)₂]} _n (2) form linear structures and {BA@[Zn(μ₂-BA)(MeOH)₂(H₂O)₂](CF₃SO₃)₂} _n (3) featuring intercalation of uncoordinated BA molecules into linear ribbons. Cd-based CPs {[Cd(μ₂-BA)₂(ClO₄)₂]· n(DCM)} _n (4) and {[Cd(μ₂-BA)(MeOH)₂(Dioxane)(η₂-SiF₆)]·mDioxane} _n (5) form porous structures with 2D lattices. All complexes exhibit strong blue emission in the solid state with average lifetimes between 8 and 13 ns. The emission of compound 4 is sensitive to the presence of nitro aromatics, simazine, and trichloroanisole (TCA) and demonstrates nonlinear Stern-Volmer quenching kinetics. Limits of detection (LOD) of 15 and 16 ppb for picric acid and TCA were achieved, respectively.

An Anthracene Excimer Fluorescence Probe on Mesoporous Silica for Dual Functions of Detection and Adsorption of Mercury (II) and Copper (II) with Biological In Vivo Applications

Dual functional activity by the same organic-inorganic hybrid material toward selective metal ion detection and its adsorption has drawn more attraction in the field of sensing. However, most of the hybrid materials in the literature are either for sensing studies or adsorption studies. In this manuscript, a fluorescent active hybrid material SiO₂ @PBATPA is synthesized by covalent coupling of anthracene-based chelating ligand N,N'-(propane-1,3-diyl) bis(N-(anthracen-9-ylmethyl)-2-((3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl) amino) acetamide) (PBATPA) within the mesopores of newly synthesized cubic mesoporous silica. The synthetic strategy is designed to form an exclusively intramolecular excimer on a solid surface, which is then used as a sensory tool for selective detection of metal ions through fluorescence quenching by the destruction of excimer upon metal ion binding. The dual functions of sensing and adsorption studies show selectivity toward Hg²⁺ and Cu²⁺ among various metal ions with detection limits of 37 and 6 ppb, respectively, and adsorption capacities of 482 and 246 mg g^-1 , respectively. This material can be used as a sensory cum adsorbent material in real food samples and living organisms such as the brine shrimp Artemia salina without any toxic effects from the material.

Efficient blue light emitting materials based on m-carborane–anthracene dyads. Structure, photophysics and bioimaging studies

Linking m-carborane to the anthracene dye produces an exceptional enhancement of the fluorescence properties, with quantum efficiencies close to 100% in solution. Dyads were internalized by HeLa cells through endocytosis showing intense blue emission.

New Lamellar Silver Thiolate Coordination Polymers with Tunable Photoluminescence Energies by Metal Substitution

The structures of two lamellar silver thiolate coordination polymers [Ag( p-SPhCO₂H)] _n (1) and [Ag( p-SPhCO₂Me)] _n (2) are described for the first time. Their inorganic part is composed of distorted Ag₃S₃ honeycomb networks separated by noninterpenetrated thiolate ligands. The main difference between the two compounds arises from dimeric hydrogen bonds present for the carboxylic acids. Indepth photophysical studies show that the silver thiolates exhibit multiemission properties, implying luminescence thermochromism. More interestingly, the synthesis of a heterometallic lamellar compound, [Ag_0.85Cu_0.15( p-SPhCO₂H)] _n (3), allows to obtain mixed metal thiolate coordination polymers and to tune the photophysical properties with the excitation wavelengths from a green vibronic luminescence to a single red emission band.

Triphenylbismuth(v) di[(iso)nicotinates] - transmetallation agents or divergent organometalloligands? First organobismuth(v)-based silver(i) coordination polymers

The reaction of Ph₃BiCl₂ with alkali salts of isonicotinic and nicotinic acids afforded Ph₃Bi[O(O)CC₅H₄N-4]₂ (1) and Ph₃Bi[O(O)CC₅H₄N-3]₂ (2), respectively, which were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy in solution, mass spectrometry and IR spectroscopy in the solid state. Their molecular structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. For both 1 and 2 the molecules contain a trigonal bipyramidal C₃BiO₂ core, with the phenyl groups in equatorial positions. The potential use of 1 and 2 as ditopic organometalloligands was investigated. The reaction of 1 or 2 with Me₃SnCl (1 : 2 molar ratio) resulted in carboxylato ligand exchange and the formation of Me₃Sn[O(O)CC₅H₄N-4] (3) and Me₃Sn[O(O)CC₅H₄N-3] (4) besides Ph₃BiCl₂. The crystals of both 3 and 4 contain 1-D coordination polymers built through intermolecular N → Sn interactions. The treatment of Ni[S₂P(OⁱPr)₂]₂ with 1 and 2, respectively, resulted, in addition to di(carboxylato)nickel(ii) derivatives, in isolation of Ph₃Bi and the disulphane [(ⁱPrO)₂P(S)S]₂. New coordination polymers were obtained by reacting 1 and 2 with various silver(i) salts: [Ag{Ph₃Bi[O(O)CC₅H₄N-4]₂}(OTf)] (5), [Ag{Ph₃Bi[O(O)CC₅H₄N-3]₂}(OTf)]·CH₂Cl₂ (6·CH₂Cl₂), [Ag{Ph₃Bi[O(O)CC₅H₄N-4]₂}](SbF₆)·2THF (7·2THF), [Ag{Ph₃Bi[O(O)CC₅H₄N-3]₂}](SbF₆)·CH₂Cl₂ (8·CH₂Cl₂) and [Ag{Ph₃Bi[O(O)CC₅H₄N-3]₂}(NO₃)]·CH₂Cl₂ (9·CH₂Cl₂). The crystal structures of 5 and 6 can be described as 1-D chains linked by triflate bridges in pairs of chains and 2-D networks, respectively. Compound 7 features a 2-D grid-like topology of the network, with tecton 1 acting as a tridentate ligand through both nitrogen and one oxygen atoms. The linker 2 molecules adopt either cis (compound 6) or trans (compounds 8 and 9) conformation. Complexes 8 and 9 are 1-D chain polymers exhibiting zig-zag and wavy motifs, respectively. The dimensionality of the structures is extended by the presence of supramolecular interactions (ππ, AgAg, AgO).

Excimer-induced high-efficiency fluorescence due to pairwise anthracene stacking in a crystal with long lifetime

Herein, we report an anthracene-based material, 2-(anthracen-9-yl)thianthrene (), whose crystal exhibits excimer fluorescence with an unexpected high luminous efficiency (up to 80%) and long lifetime (163.75 ns), due to pairwise anthracene stacking. These results will update the traditional view that excimers are poorly efficient in photoluminescence.

Luminescent Silver-Purine Double Helicate: Synthesis, Self-Assembly and Antibacterial Action

The synthesis, self-assembly and antibacterial activity of a luminescent silver-purine double helicate is reported. The structure of the newly synthesized silver-supported helicate [C₃₆ H₂₄ N₁₆ O₄ Cl₅ Ag₁ ] was unambiguously characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. It exhibited a bright bluish-green emission (λ_max =460 nm), when excited with 380 nm light. Microscopic investigations showed that the complex has a propensity to self-assemble into nanospheres. The antibacterial activity of this silver-containing helicate was studied against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration) values showed that the complex is very active against Gram-negative bacteria. Further internalization of the silver complex into E. coli bacteria was mapped with the help of microscopic techniques. These results are significant as silver was recently found to enhance antibiotic action against Gram-negative bacteria, raising hope in countering severe bacterial infections.

Formation of one-dimensional helical columns and excimerlike excited states by racemic quinoxaline-fused [7]carbohelicenes in the crystal

A series of quinoxaline-fused [7]carbohelicenes (HeQu derivatives) was designed and synthesized to evaluate their structural and photophysical properties in the crystal state. The quinoxaline units were expected to enhance the light-emitting properties and to control the packing structures in the crystal. The electrochemical and spectroscopic properties and excited-state dynamics of these compounds were investigated in detail. The first oxidation potentials of HeQu derivatives are approximately the same as that of unsubstituted reference [7]carbohelicene (Heli), whereas their first reduction potentials are shifted to the positive by about 0.7 V. The steady-state absorption, fluorescence, and circular dichroism spectra also became redshifted compared to those of Heli. The molecular orbitals and energy levels of the HOMO and LUMO states, calculated by DFT methods, support these trends. Moreover, the absolute fluorescence quantum yields of HeQu derivatives are about four times larger than that of Heli. The structural properties of the aggregated states were analyzed by single-crystal analysis. Introduction of appropriate substituents (i.e., 4-methoxyphenyl) in the HeQu unit enabled the construction of one-dimensional helical columns of racemic HeQu derivatives in the crystal state. Helix formation is based on intracolumn π-stacking between two neighboring [7]carbohelicenes and intercolumn CH⋅⋅⋅N interaction between a nitrogen atom of a quinoxaline unit and a hydrogen atom of a helicene unit. The time-resolved fluorescence spectra of single crystals clearly showed an excimerlike delocalized excited state owing to the short distance between neighboring [7]carbohelicene units.
