Abstract
Confinement within supramolecular systems is the leading technology to finely tune guest functional properties. In this communication we report the synthesis of a chiral supramolecular cage able to bias the helicity of a perfluorinated carbon chain hosted within the cage. We monitor the phenomenon of chiral induction by Vibrational Circular Dichroism (VCD) experiments complemented by DFT calculations over the possible conformers.

Abstract
Hydrophobic and volatile flavor molecules can be encapsulated inside cyclodextrins (CyDs). Inclusion complexes are frequently used in solid or dispersed states in preserved food and cosmetics. In this study, the solid-state structures of spray-dried inclusion complexes of l-menthol in α-CyD and β-CyD were analyzed using 13C solid-state NMR and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD). The NMR signals of l-menthol and CyDs were identified in the physical mixture and the l-menthol inclusion complex of α- and β-CyD. The NMR signal of the isopropyl-methyl group of menthol in the α-CyD inclusion complex exhibited a large low-field shift, which suggested a steric hindrance between menthol and α-CyD. VCD exhibited specific changes in the intensity of bands corresponding to C-C vibrations in α-CyD and O-C stretching vibrations in l-menthol. Our results indicated that l-menthol specifically fitted the narrow space within α-CyD. The combined solid-state NMR and VCD analysis provided structural insights into the flavor inclusion complex in the solid-state.

Abstract
Porphyrin cage-compounds are used as biomimetic models and substrate-selective catalysts in supramolecular chemistry. In this work we present the resolution of planar-chiral porphyrin cages and the determination of their absolute configuration by vibrational circular dichroism in combination with density functional theory calculations. The chiral porphyrin-cages form complexes with achiral and chiral viologen-guests and upon binding one of the axial enantiomorphs of the guest is bound selectively, as is indicated by induced-electronic-dichroism-spectra in combination with calculations. This host-guest binding also leads to unusual enhanced vibrational circular dichroism, which is the result of a combination of phenomena, such as rigidification of the host and guest structures, charge transfer, and coupling of specific vibration modes of the host and guest. The results offer insights in how the porphyrin cage-compounds may be used to construct a future molecular Turing machine that can write chiral information onto polymer chains. Vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopy can be useful for determining the absolute configuration of chiral molecules, as long as the signal intensities are high enough. Here, the authors establish the absolute configurations of two large chiral porphyrin cages and, notably, discover that host-guest binding enhances their VCD intensities.

Abstract
We report the first study dealing with the self-assembly of an α-amino acid derivative in perfluorocarbons. Rheology, microscopy, and spectroscopy studies reveal that the fluorous sodium l-prolinate derivative 1 self-assembles in perfluorocarbons to form a three-dimensional network of left-handed nano-helices resulting in solvent gelation. Singlet oxygen lifetime measured in a gel of perfluorodecalin is about 1000 times longer than in pure water.

Abstract
Vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) studies are reported on a chiral compound in which a fullerene C60 moiety is used as an electron acceptor and local VCD amplifier for an alanine-based peptide chain. Four redox states are investigated in this study, of which three are reduced species that possess low-lying electronic states as confirmed by UV/Vis spectroelectrochemistry. VCD measurements in combination with (TD)DFT calculations are used to investigate (i) how the low-lying electronic states of the reduced species modulate the amplification of VCD signals, (ii) how this amplification depends on the distance between oscillator and amplifier, and (iii) how the spatial extent of the amplifier influences amplification. These results pave the way for further development of tailored molecular VCD amplifiers.

Abstract
Four Ala-Ala dipeptides with a perfluoroalkyl chain at the N-terminal were synthesized. They were able to self-assemble into helical nanofibers and/or twisted nanobelts in a mixture of DMSO/H2 O. The handedness of nanofibers and nanobelts was controlled by the chirality of the alanine at the N-terminal. The stacking handedness of the phenylene groups and the helicity of the perfluoroalkyl chain were studied using circular dichroism spectroscopy and vibrational circular dichroism, respectively. The chirality of the alanine at N-terminal controlled the stacking handedness of the neighboring phenylene groups. Moreover, due to the low potential barrier between M- and P-helices of the perfluorocarbon chain, the handedness of the organic self-assemblies eventually controlled the helicity of the perfluorocarbon chain. X-ray diffraction indicated that a lamellar structure was formed by the dimers of the dipeptides.

Abstract
In mixtures of water and dimethyl sulfoxide, 4'-(n-dodecyloxy)-1,1'-biphenyl-4-carbonyl Ala-Ala dipeptides can self-assemble into tubular structures that are formed by coiled nanoribbons. The twist and stacking handedness of biphenylene groups were studied using circular dichroism and confirmed by theoretical chemical calculations. The handedness of the coiled nanoribbons and the stacking handedness of biphenylene groups are controlled by the chirality of alanine at the C-terminus, whereas the twist handedness of biphenylene groups is determined by the chirality of alanine at the N-terminus. 1H NMR spectra indicated that the hydrogen bond formed by the N-H group of alanine at the N-terminus plays an important role in the formation of organic self-assemblies. On the basis of small-angle X-ray scattering characterization, a dimer structure was proposed to form through the terminal COOH groups.

Abstract
Nanomaterials with helical morphologies have attracted much attention owing to their potential applications as nanosprings, chirality sensors and in chiral optics. Single-handed helical Ta2 O5 nanotubes prepared through a supramolecular templating approach are described. The handedness is controlled by that of the organic self-assemblies of chiral low-molecular-weight gelators (LMWGs). The chiral LMWGs self-assemble into single-handed twisted nanoribbons through H-bonding, hydrophobic association, and π-π stacking. The Ta2 O5 nanotubes are formed by the adsorption and polycondensation of Ta2 O5 oligomers on the surfaces and edges of the twisted organic nanoribbons followed by removal of the template. The optical activity of the nanotubes is proposed to originate from the chiral defects on the inner surfaces of the tubular structures. Single-handed twisted LiTaO3 nanotubes can also be prepared using Ta2 O5 nanotubes.

Abstract
The present article reviews the results on the application of vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopy to the study of stereochemical properties of chiral metal complexes in solution. The chiral characters reflecting on the vibrational properties of metal complexes are revealed by measurements of a series of β-diketonato complexes with the help of theoretical calculation. Attention is paid to the effects of electronic properties of a central metal ion on vibrational energy levels or low-lying electronic states. The investigation is further extended to the oligomers of β-diketonato complex units. The induction of chiral structures is confirmed by the VCD spectra when chiral inert moieties are connected with labile metal ions. These results have demonstrated how VCD spectroscopy is efficient in revealing the static and dynamic properties of mononuclear and multinuclear chiral metal complexes, which are difficult to clarify by means of other spectroscopes.

Abstract
A chiral gelator, RR- or SS-N,N'-diperfluorooctanoyl-1,2-diaminocyclohexane, gelated racemic 2-butanol. The gel was most stable at the racemic mixture, its stability lowered with the increase in the optical purity of the gelator. Notably, characteristic helically coiled fibrils were formed in the narrow region of enantiomer excess (ee = 0.2-0.4). Promotion effects of the antipodal enantiomers are proposed.
