Mechanistical studies on the electron-induced degradation of polymers: polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, and polystyrene

Thermoradiationally Modified Polytetrafluoroethylene as a Basis for Membrane Fabrication: Resistance to Hydrogen Penetration, the Effect of Ion Treatment on the Chemical Structure and Surface Morphology, Evaluation of the Track Radius

A study of the properties of thermoradiationally modified polytetrafluoroethylene and its importance for use as the basis of polymer membranes is presented. The hydrogen permeability of a TRM-PTFE film was studied in comparison with an original PTFE film, and showed a three-fold decrease in hydrogen permeability. Further, TRM-PTFE films were irradiated with accelerated Xe ions with an energy of 1 MeV with fluences from 1 × 10⁸ to 1 × 10¹¹. The changes induced by ion treatment were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy of disturbed total internal reflection (IR-ATR) and by atomic force microscopy (ASM). IR-ATR indicated the absence of destruction in the fluence range from 1 × 10⁸ to 3 × 10¹⁰ cm^-2 (in the area of isolated tracks) and the beginning of overlap of latent tracks on fluences from 3 × 10¹⁰ to 1 × 10¹¹ cm^-2. Topographic images with AFM showed layered lamellar structures that collapsed at a fluence of 10⁸ cm^-2. The destruction was accompanied by a decrease in roughness about seven times the size of the track core observed by the ASM method, fully corresponding to the value obtained on the basis of calculations using modeling in an SRIM program.

Trapped radical behavior of electron beam irradiated polytetrafluoroethylene fine powder at various temperatures

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fine powder with 93% crystallinity was irradiated by an electron beam (EB) at various temperatures under a nitrogen atmosphere. Trapped free radicals in PTFE were studied using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The observed spectra of the samples exposed to air after irradiation at various temperatures showed asymmetrical signals, which are middle-chain type peroxide macroradicals derived from fluoroalkyl radicals. The radical yields at each irradiation temperature increased with increasing absorbed dose, and eventually saturated. The higher irradiation temperature resulted in higher radical yields when compared at the same exposed dose. Furthermore, the G-value of the radicals (G(R·)) increases with increasing irradiation temperatures corresponding to each relaxation and transition temperature. It is concluded that the chain reaction by the fluorine extraction from the main chain due to the end-chain radical generated via β-scission after dissociative electron attachment (DEA) is enhanced by the synergistic effect of heat and radiation.

Characteristics of Poly(vinyl Alcohol) (PVA) Based Composites Integrated with Green Synthesized Al3+-Metal Complex: Structural, Optical, and Localized Density of State Analysis

The influence of dispersing Al-metal complex on the optical properties of PVA was investigated using UV–visible spectroscopy. Polymer composite films with various Al³⁺-complex amounts in the PVA matrix were arranged by solution casting technique by means of distilled water as a widespread solvent. The formation of Al³⁺-metal complex was verified through Ultraviolet–visible (UV-Vis) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) examinations. The addition of Al-complex into the polymer matrix led to the recovery of the optical parameters such as dielectric constant (ε_r and ε_i) and refractive index (n). The variations of real and imaginary parts of complex dielectric constant as a function of photon wavelength were studied to calculate localized charge density values (N/m*), high-frequency dielectric constant, relaxation time, optical mobility, optical resistivity, and plasma angular frequency (ω_p) of electrons. In proportion with Al³⁺-complex content, the N/m* values were amplified from 3.68 × 10⁵⁵ kg⁻¹ m⁻³ to 109 × 10⁵⁵ kg⁻¹ m⁻³. The study of optical parameters may find applications within optical instrument manufacturing. The optical band gap was determined from Tauc’s equation, and the type of electronic transition was specified. A remarkable drop in the optical band gap was observed. The dispersion of static refractive index (n_o) of the prepared composites was analyzed using the theoretical Wemple–DiDomenico single oscillator model. The average oscillator energy (E_o) and oscillator dispersion energy (E_d) parameters were estimated.

100th Anniversary of Macromolecular Science Viewpoint: Polymeric Materials by In Situ Liquid-Phase Transmission Electron Microscopy

A century ago, Hermann Staudinger proposed the macromolecular theory of polymers, and now, as we enter the second century of polymer science, we face a different set of opportunities and challenges for the development of functional soft matter. Indeed, many fundamental questions remain open, relating to physical structures and mechanisms of phase transformations at the molecular and nanoscale. In this Viewpoint, we describe efforts to develop a dynamic, in situ microscopy tool suited to the study of polymeric materials at the nanoscale that allows for direct observation of discrete structures and processes in solution, as a complement to light, neutron, and X-ray scattering methods. Liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy (LPTEM) is a nascent in situ imaging technique for characterizing and examining solvated nanomaterials in real time. Though still under development, LPTEM has been shown to be capable of several modes of imaging: (1) imaging static solvated materials analogous to cryo-TEM, (2) videography of nanomaterials in motion, (3) observing solutions or nanomaterials undergoing physical and chemical transformations, including synthesis, assembly, and phase transitions, and (4) observing electron beam-induced chemical-materials processes. Herein, we describe opportunities and limitations of LPTEM for polymer science. We review the basic experimental platform of LPTEM and describe the origin of electron beam effects that go hand in hand with the imaging process. These electron beam effects cause perturbation and damage to the sample and solvent that can manifest as artefacts in images and videos. We describe sample-specific experimental guidelines and outline approaches to mitigate, characterize, and quantify beam damaging effects. Altogether, we seek to provide an overview of this nascent field in the context of its potential to contribute to the advancement of polymer science.
