Equation-of-Motion Methods for the Calculation of Femtosecond Time-Resolved 4-Wave-Mixing and N-Wave-Mixing Signals

Femtosecond nonlinear spectroscopy is the main tool for the time-resolved detection of photophysical and photochemical processes. Since most systems of chemical interest are rather complex, theoretical support is indispensable for the extraction of the intrinsic system dynamics from the detected spectroscopic responses. There exist two alternative theoretical formalisms for the calculation of spectroscopic signals, the nonlinear response-function (NRF) approach and the spectroscopic equation-of-motion (EOM) approach. In the NRF formalism, the system-field interaction is assumed to be sufficiently weak and is treated in lowest-order perturbation theory for each laser pulse interacting with the sample. The conceptual alternative to the NRF method is the extraction of the spectroscopic signals from the solutions of quantum mechanical, semiclassical, or quasiclassical EOMs which govern the time evolution of the material system interacting with the radiation field of the laser pulses. The NRF formalism and its applications to a broad range of material systems and spectroscopic signals have been comprehensively reviewed in the literature. This article provides a detailed review of the suite of EOM methods, including applications to 4-wave-mixing and N-wave-mixing signals detected with weak or strong fields. Under certain circumstances, the spectroscopic EOM methods may be more efficient than the NRF method for the computation of various nonlinear spectroscopic signals.

Effects of high pulse intensity and chirp in two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy of an atomic vapor

The effects of high pulse intensity and chirp on two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy signals are experimentally investigated in the highly non-perturbative regime using atomic rubidium vapor as clean model system. Data analysis is performed based on higher-order Feynman diagrams and non-perturbative numerical simulations of the system response. It is shown that higher-order contributions may lead to a fundamental change of the static appearance and beating-maps of the 2D spectra and that chirped pulses enhance or suppress distinct higher-order pathways. We further give an estimate of the threshold intensity beyond which the high-intensity effects become visible for the system under consideration.

Strong-pump strong-probe spectroscopy: effects of higher excited electronic states

The present paper is devoted to the simulation of (integral and dispersed) pump-probe signals in the nonperturbative regime for a series of material systems with multiple electronic states and excited-state absorption. We show that strong-pump strong-probe spectroscopy permits the probing of vibrational wavepackets in high-lying and/or short-lived excited electronic states with a time resolution which is not limited by the pulse durations. The field strength can be regarded as an additional experimentally controllable parameter, which can be tuned to maximize the spectroscopic information for a given material system.

Ultrafast evolution of imidazole after electronic excitation

The ultrafast dynamics of the imidazole chromophore has been tracked after electronic excitation in the 250-217 nm energy region, by time delayed ionization with 800 nm laser pulses. The time-dependent signals collected at the imidazole(+) mass channel show the signature of femtosecond dynamics, originating on the πσ*- and ππ*-type states located in the explored energy region. The fitting of the transients, which due to the appearance of nonresonant coherent adiabatic excitation requires a quantum treatment based in the Bloch equations, yields two lifetimes of 18 ± 4 and 19 ± 4 fs. The first is associated with the πσ* ← ππ* internal conversion, while the second reflects the loss of ionization cross-section as the system evolves along the dissociative πσ* surface. This study provides a comprehensive picture of the photophysics of the molecule that agrees with previous experimental and theoretical findings.

The excited-state decay of 1-methyl-2(1H)-pyrimidinone is an activated process

The photophysics of 1-methyl-2(1H)-pyrimidinone (1MP) dissolved in water is investigated by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence, UV/Vis absorption, and IR spectroscopy. In the experiments, excitation light is tuned to the lowest-energy absorption band of 1MP peaking at 302 nm. At room temperature (291 K) its fluorescence lifetime amounts to 450 ps. With increasing temperature this lifetime decreases and equals 160 ps at 338 K. Internal conversion (IC) repopulating the ground state and intersystem crossing (ISC) to a triplet state are the dominant decay channels of the excited singlet state. At room temperature both channels contribute equally to the decay, that is, the quantum yields of IC and ISC are both approximately 0.5. The temperature dependence of UV/Vis transient absorption signals shows that the activation energy of the IC process (2140 cm(-1)) is higher than that of the ISC process (640 cm(-1)).
