Abstract
HYPOTHESIS Distinguishing substituted aromatic isomers is a challenging task because of the great similarity of their physicochemical properties. Considering xylene isomers have drastically different geometrical shapes, we predict this would show great impact on the self-assembling behavior of various xylene isomer@cyclodextrin inclusion complex. EXPERIMENTS Through host-guest crystalline self-assembly, among three isomers, only ortho-xylene is capable to form hydrogels with α-cyclodextrin. ROESY NMR, molecular simulations and circular dichroism spectra suggest that the ortho selectivity comes from the difference in the conformation of host-guest building block. The larger volume, and steric hinderance of the ortho isomer make it most possibly decrease their tendency to adopt more mobile orientations in cyclodextrin-based complex as meta and para isomers do, resulting in gel formation. FINDINGS Herein, we report a novel, facile and environmentally-friendly protocol on the recognition of ortho benzene isomers using α-cyclodextrin through host-guest crystalline self-assembly. Visual recognition of ortho-xylene is achieved through amplifying the structural difference of xylene isomers at molecular scale into macroscopic scale. We believe this work unveils subtle rules to control macroscopic assemblies at the molecular level and highlights the potential of using macrocyclic compounds to improve the quality and reduce the energy bill for separation in petrochemical industry.

Abstract
We have designed and synthesized a series of novel, supramolecular, long-lived fluorescent probes based on the host-guest inclusion complexes formation between fluorescent indolizinyl-pyridinium salts and β-cyclodextrin. Fluorescence and electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry experiments, supported by theoretical molecular docking studies, were utilized in the monitoring of the inclusion complexes formation, evidencing the appearance of corresponding 1:1 and 1:2 species. Additionally, the influence of the guest molecule over the aggregation processes of the cyclodextrin inclusion complexes was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The absence of cytotoxicity, cellular permeability, long-lived intracellular fluorescence, and in time specific accumulation within acidic organelles identified the investigated supramolecular entities as remarkable candidates for intracellular fluorescence probes. Co-staining experiments using specific organelle markers revealed the fact that, after a 24-h incubation period, the inclusion complexes accumulate predominantly in lysosomes rather than in mitochondria. This study opens new possibilities for a broad range of fluorescent dyes with solubility and high toxicity issues, able to form inclusion complexes with β-cyclodextrin, to be tested as intracellular fluorescence probes.

Abstract
A novel photo-responsive anionic surfactant with a dimethylamino-substituted azobenzene located at the end of the hydrophobic chain, 6-(4-dimethylaminoazobenzene-4'-oxy)hexanoate sodium (DAH), has been designed. Through the host-guest interaction in aqueous solution, the trans-DAH could be spontaneously included by using two native α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) molecules. The formed hydrophilic inclusion complex (DAH@2α-CD), however, could act as a gelator to induce the formation of a supramolecular hydrogel, which is driven mainly by hydrogen bonds between neighboring α-CDs and also between the carboxylate in DAH and water. Compared with common hydrogels that consist of networks with fibres or discrete polymer chains, the hydrogel formed by DAH@2α-CD was composed of periodic lamellar structures possessing good shear-thinning behavior and much swollen water layers. The more interesting point for such a hydrogel was its visible-light responsibility for gel-sol reversible phase transition. This originated from the introduction of an electron-donating group (dimethylamino) to azobenzene, which noticeably red-shifted the responsive wavelength for its trans-to-cis isomerization. It was also worth noting that the host-guest interaction between azobenzene in DAH and α-CD significantly improved the photo-transition efficiency from trans to cis forms of azobenzene, which played a critical role in the visible-light responsibility of the hydrogel. This unique visible-light-responsive behavior combined with the inherent thermo-responsive property from α-CD should make the prepared hydrogel find more potential applications in biomedical systems.

Abstract
The kinetics of supramolecular bindings are fundamentally important for molecular motions and spatial-temporal distributions in biological systems, but have rarely been employed in preparing artificial materials. This report proposes a bio-inspired concept to regulate dynamic gradients through the coupled supramolecular binding and diffusion process in receptor-embedded hydrogel matrices. A new type of hydrogel that uses cyclodextrin (CD) as both the gelling moiety and the receptors is prepared as the diffusion matrices. The diffusible guest, 4-aminoazobenzene, quickly and reversibly binds to matrices-bound CD during diffusion and generates steeper gradients than regular diffusion. Weakened bindings induced through UV irradiation extend the gradients. Combined with numerical simulation, these results indicate that the coupled binding-diffusion could be viewed as slowed diffusion, regulated jointly by the binding constant and the equilibrium receptor concentrations, and gradients within a bio-relevant extent of 4 mm are preserved up to 90 h. This report should inspire design strategies of biomedical or cell-culturing materials.
