Engineering 3D ordered molecular thin films by nanoscale control

Polarization-Dependent Thin Films with Biaxial Anisotropic Absorption Constructed by a Single Coating and Subsequent Topochemical Polymerization of Chromophores

For the construction of hierarchical superstructures with biaxial anisotropic absorption, a newly synthesized diacetylene-functionalized bipyridinium is self-assembled to use an electron-accepting host for capturing and arranging guests. The formation of the donor-acceptor complex triggers an intermolecular charge transfer, leading to chromophore activation. Polarization-dependent multichroic thin films are prepared through a sequential process of single-coating, self-assembly, and topochemical polymerization of host-guest chromophores. Molecular packing structures constructed in the single-layer optical thin film possess orthogonal absorption axes for two different wavelengths. By tuning the linear polarization angle, the color of the optical thin film can be intentionally controlled. This single-layered multichroic film provides a new pathway for the development of anticounterfeiting and multiplexing encryptions.

Tackling Performance Challenges in Organic Photovoltaics: An Overview about Compatibilizers

Organic Photovoltaics (OPVs) based on Bulk Heterojunction (BHJ) blends are a mature technology. Having started their intensive development two decades ago, their low cost, processability and flexibility rapidly funneled the interest of the scientific community, searching for new solutions to expand solar photovoltaics market and promote sustainable development. However, their robust implementation is hampered by some issues, concerning the choice of the donor/acceptor materials, the device thermal/photo-stability, and, last but not least, their morphology. Indeed, the morphological profile of BHJs has a strong impact over charge generation, collection, and recombination processes; control over nano/microstructural morphology would be desirable, aiming at finely tuning the device performance and overcoming those previously mentioned critical issues. The employ of compatibilizers has emerged as a promising, economically sustainable, and widely applicable approach for the donor/acceptor interface (D/A-I) optimization. Thus, improvements in the global performance of the devices can be achieved without making use of more complex architectures. Even though several materials have been deeply documented and reported as effective compatibilizing agents, scientific reports are quite fragmentary. Here we would like to offer a panoramic overview of the literature on compatibilizers, focusing on the progression documented in the last decade.

Self-organization and nanostructural control in thin film heterojunctions

In spite of more than two-decades of studies of molecular self-assembly, the achievement of low cost, easy-to-implement and multi-parameter bottom-up approaches to address the supramolecular morphology in three-dimensional (3D) systems is still missing. In the particular case of molecular thin films, the 3D nanoscale morphology and function are crucial for both fundamental and applied research. Here we show how it is possible to tune the 3D film structure (domain size, branching, etc.) of thin film heterojunctions with nanoscale accuracy together with the modulation of their optoelectronic properties by employing an easy two-step approach. At first we prepared multi-planar heterojunctions with a programmed sequence of nanoscopic layers. In a second step, thermal stimuli have been employed to induce the formation of bulk heterojunctions with bicontinuous and interdigitated phases having a size below the exciton diffusion length. Importantly, the study of luminescence quenching of these systems can be considered as a useful means for the accurate estimation of the exciton diffusion length of semiconductors in nanoscale blends. Finally, nearly a thousand times lower material consumption than spin coating allows a drastic reduction of material wasting and a low-cost implementation, besides the considerable possibility of preparing thin film blends also by employing materials soluble in different solvents.

Polymeric Thin Films for Organic Electronics: Properties and Adaptive Structures

This review deals with the correlation between morphology, structure and performance of organic electronic devices including thin film transistors and solar cells. In particular, we report on solution processed devices going into the role of the 3D supramolecular organization in determining their electronic properties. A selection of case studies from recent literature are reviewed, relying on solution methods for organic thin-film deposition which allow fine control of the supramolecular aggregation of polymers confined at surfaces in nanoscopic layers. A special focus is given to issues exploiting morphological structures stemming from the intrinsic polymeric dynamic adaptation under non-equilibrium conditions.

Selecting speed-dependent pathways for a programmable nanoscale texture by wet interfaces

The realization of well-defined and ordered structures on the nanoscale is a main issue in nanoscience and nanotechnology, biotechnology and other related fields like plastic or organic electronics. Among the bottom-up approaches, to date, self-assembly (equilibrium aggregates) received a major attention. In spite of this, far from equilibrium conditions allow for the generation of a wider landscape of organized systems depending on the set of control parameters employed. Under an adaptation vision of the structures, here we report some case studies showing how it is possible to programme and control the nanoscale features of ordered super- or supra-aggregates at wet interfaces by modulating the dynamic parameters. In particular, speed is foreseen as a threshold factor for changing the aggregation mechanism along with the shape and degree of order of the structures as well as, within a specific aggregation path, their size and defectivity.

Photopatterning of multilayer n-alkylsilane films

Surface photopatterning of organosilane self-assembled monolayers (SAM) has received increasing attention since its introduction 20 years ago. Herein we report for the first time a cost-efficient soft photopatterning technique affording amplified 3D multilayer structures. The essential chemistry relies on a spatially controlled photoacid-catalyzed hydrolysis and polycondensation of n-alkyltrimethoxysilane precursors (n-C(12)H(25)Si(OCH(3))(3),). Amphiphilic siloxane species are photogenerated locally and are able to self-assemble spontaneously into a long-range-ordered lamellar mesostructure.

Vertical single nanowire devices based on conducting polymers

A simple scheme for single conducting polymer nanowire fabrication and device integration is presented. We discuss a combined top-down and bottom-up approach for the sequential, precise manufacture of vertical polyaniline nanowires. The method is scalable and can be applied on rigid as well as on flexible substrates. The kinetics of the template-confined growth is presented and discussed. We further study the electrical behavior of single vertical polyaniline nanowires and address the fabrication of crossbar latches using a criss-cross arrangement of electrodes. The as-synthesized polyaniline nanowires display electric conductivities reaching values as high as 0.4 S cm⁻¹.

Smart high-κ nanodielectrics using solid supported polyoxometalate-rich nanostructures

Utilizing Langmuir-Blodgett deposition and scanning probe microscopy, we have investigated the extent to which cations alter the self-assembly processes of hybrid polyoxometalates (POMs) on surfaces. The well-defined 2D hexagonal nanostructures obtained were extensively characterized and their properties were studied, and this has revealed fascinating dielectric behavior and reversible capacitive properties. The nanostructures are extremely stable under ambient conditions, and yet exhibit fascinating self-patterning upon heating. These findings present POMs as effective smart nanodielectrics and open up a new field for future POM applications.
