Synthesis and Properties of Axially Symmetrical Rigid Visible Light-Harvesting Systems Containing [60]Fullerene and Perylenebisimide

Two visible light-harvesting perylenebisimide (PDI)-[60]fullerene (C₆₀) systems, dyad P1 with one C₆₀ unit and triad P2 with two C₆₀ units, have been synthesized. Both systems are axially symmetrical with a rigid biphenyl linker, ensuring a relatively fixed spatial distance between the donor and acceptor, preventing through-space interaction, and enhancing energy transfer. Steady-state and transient spectroscopy, electrochemistry, as well as theoretical calculations have been used to investigate the electrochemical and photophysical properties of the two systems. Steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy demonstrate that the excited state is featured by an efficient intramolecular energy transfer from PDI to C₆₀. Then, the high efficient intrinsic intersystem crossing of C₆₀ eventually leads to the production of the triplet C₆₀. The extensive visible light absorption of PDI in the range of 400-650 nm and the final localization of the excited energy at the triplet C₆₀ make these compounds ideal singlet oxygen inducers. Further investigation shows that the photooxidation capability for both compounds is significantly enhanced with respect to either PDI or C₆₀ and even better than that of the commonly used triplet photosensitizer methylene blue (MB). The double C₆₀ moieties in P2 display a better result, and the photooxidation efficiency of P2 increases 1.3- and 1.4-fold compared to that of P1 and MB, respectively. The combination of a light-harvesting unit with an intersystem crossing unit results in a highly efficient photooxidation system, which opens up a new way to triplet photosensitizer design.

Synthesis and photophysical properties of multichromophoric carbonyl-bridged triarylamines

The synthesis and photophysical properties of two novel multichromophoric compounds is presented. Their molecular design comprises a carbonyl-bridged triarylamine core and either naphthalimides or 4-(5-hexyl-2,2'-bithiophene)naphthalimides as second chromophore in the periphery. The lateral chromophores are attached to the core via an amide linkage and a short alkyl spacer. The synthetic approach demonstrates a straightforward functionalization strategy for carbonyl-bridged triarylamines. Steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic investigations of these compounds, in combination with three reference compounds, provide clear evidence for energy transfer in both multichromophoric compounds. The direction of the energy transfer depends on the lateral chromophore used. Furthermore, the compound bearing the lateral 4-(bithiophene)naphthaimides is capable of forming fluorescent gels at very low concentrations in the sub-millimolar regime whilst retaining its energy transfer properties.

Energy-funneling-based broadband visible-light-absorbing bodipy-C60 triads and tetrads as dual functional heavy-atom-free organic triplet photosensitizers for photocatalytic organic reactions

C60-bodipy triads and tetrads based on the energy-funneling effect that show broadband absorption in the visible region have been prepared as novel triplet photosensitizers. The new photosensitizers contain two or three different light-harvesting antennae associated with different absorption wavelengths, resulting in a broad absorption band (450-650 nm). The panchromatic excitation energy harvested by the bodipy moieties is funneled into a spin converter (C60), thus ensuring intersystem crossing and population of the triplet state. Nanosecond time-resolved transient absorption and spin density analysis indicated that the T1 state is localized on either C60 or the antennae, depending on the T1 energy levels of the two entities. The antenna-localized T1 state shows a longer lifetime (τ(T)=132.9 μs) than the C60-localized T1 state (ca. 27.4 μs). We found that the C60 triads and tetrads can be used as dual functional photocatalysts, that is, singlet oxygen ((1)O2) and superoxide radical anion (O2(.-)) photosensitizers. In the photooxidation of naphthol to juglone, the (1)O2 photosensitizing ability of the C60 triad is a factor of 8.9 greater than the conventional triplet photosensitizers tetraphenylporphyrin and methylene blue. The C60 dyads and triads were also used as photocatalysts for O2(.-)-mediated aerobic oxidation of aromatic boronic acids to produce phenols. The reaction times were greatly reduced compared with when [Ru(bpy)3Cl2] was used as photocatalyst. Our study of triplet photosensitizers has shown that broadband absorption in the visible spectral region and long-lived triplet excited states can be useful for the design of new heavy-atom-free organic triplet photosensitizers and for the application of these triplet photosensitizers in photo-organocatalysis.

Utilizing redox-chemistry to elucidate the nature of exciton transitions in supramolecular dye nanotubes

Supramolecular assemblies that interact with light have recently garnered much interest as well-defined nanoscale materials for electronic excitation energy collection and transport. However, to control such complex systems it is essential to understand how their various parts interact and whether these interactions result in coherently shared excited states (excitons) or in diffusive energy transport between them. Here, we address this by studying a model system consisting of two concentric cylindrical dye aggregates in a light-harvesting nanotube. Through selective chemistry we are able to unambiguously determine the supramolecular origin of the observed excitonic transitions. These results required the development of a new theoretical model of the supramolecular structure of the assembly. Our results demonstrate that the two cylinders of the nanotube have distinct spectral responses and are best described as two separate, weakly coupled excitonic systems. Understanding such interactions is critical to the control of energy transfer on a molecular scale, a goal in various applications ranging from artificial photosynthesis to molecular electronics.
