Six-dimensional quantum dynamics of an Eley-Rideal reaction between gaseous and adsorbed hydrogen atoms on Cu(111)

In the form of direct abstraction of a surface adsorbate by a gaseous projectile, the Eley-Rideal (ER) reaction at the gas-surface interface manifests interesting dynamics. Unfortunately, high-dimensional quantum dynamical (QD) studies for ER reactions remain very challenging, which demands a large configuration space and the coordinate transformation of wavefunctions. Here, we report the first six-dimensional (6D) fully coupled quantum scattering method for studying the ER reaction between gas phase H(D) atoms and adsorbed D(H) atoms on a rigid Cu(111) surface. Reaction probabilities and product rovibrational state distributions obtained by this 6D model are found to be quite different from those obtained by reduced-dimensional QD models, demonstrating the high-dimensional nature of the ER reaction. Using two distinct potential energy surfaces (PESs), we further discuss the influence of the PES on the calculated product vibrational and rotational state distributions, in comparison with experimental results. The lateral corrugation and the exothermicity of the PES are found to play a critical role in controlling the energy disposal in the ER reaction.

The Sticking of N2 on W(100) Surface: An Improvement in the Description of the Adsorption Dynamics Further Reconciling Theory and Experiment

The adsorption of nitrogen molecules on a (100) tungsten surface has been studied using a new potential energy surface in which long-range interactions are suitably characterized and represented by the Improved Lennard-Jones function. The new potential energy surface is used to carry out molecular dynamics simulations by adopting a semiclassical collisional method that explicitly includes the interaction with the surface phonons. The results of the sticking probability, evaluated as a function of the collision energy, are in good agreement with those obtained in the experiments and improve the already good comparison recently obtained with calculations performed using interactions from the Density Functional Theory method and corrected for long-range van der Waals contributions. The dependence of trapping probability on the surface temperature for a well-defined collision energy has also been investigated.

Ab initio molecular dynamics of hydrogen on tungsten surfaces

The dissociation process of hydrogen molecules on W(110) was studied using density functional theory and classical molecular dynamics. We have calculated the dissociation probability for molecules with energies below 300 meV and analyzed the dynamics of the adsorption process. Our results show that the fate of each trajectory is determined at distances relatively far from the surface, at roughly 2-2.5 Å. This distance varies slightly with the initial kinetic energy of the molecule. Part of our simulations include van der Waals dispersion effects in the interaction between molecule and surface. We present a comparison between these results and other theoretical and experimental results previously published. The inclusion of the van der Waals term provokes an increase in the far-distance attraction that is compensated by a stronger repulsion at short distances. The combination of both effects appreciably decreases the value of the dissociation probability. The successful comparison of our results with experimental information confirms that the methodology employed can be considered as a rich and accurate instrument to study the dissociation of hydrogen on surfaces.

Hydrogen abstraction from metal surfaces: when electron-hole pair excitations strongly affect hot-atom recombination

Using molecular dynamics simulations, we predict that the inclusion of nonadiabatic electronic excitations influences the dynamics of preadsorbed hydrogen abstraction from the W(110) surface by hydrogen scattering. The hot-atom recombination, which involves hyperthermal diffusion of the impinging atom on the surface, is significantly affected by the dissipation of energy mediated by electron-hole pair excitations at low coverage and low incidence energy. This issue is of importance as this abstraction mechanism is thought to largely contribute to molecular hydrogen formation from metal surfaces.

Strongly reduced penetration of atomic deuterium in radiation-damaged tungsten

Radiation-damaged tungsten is exposed to high-flux, low-energy deuterium plasmas at self-bias conditions. We observe that the fraction of deuterium that penetrates is only 10(-5)-10(-7) of the plasma flux and strongly dependent on the local surface temperature. We propose that deuterium does not directly penetrate bulk tungsten but that it thermalizes at the surface, where it forms a protective chemisorbed layer. We find an energy barrier of 1-2 eV between the surface and bulk, causing the influx of deuterium to be low as compared to the number of defects and leading to slow filling of the damaged layer.
