A dual drug-loaded peptide system with morphological transformation prolongs drug retention and inhibits breast cancer growth

The treatment of breast cancer relies heavily on chemotherapy, but chemotherapy is limited by the disadvantages of poor targeting, susceptibility to extracellular matrix (ECM) interference and a short duration of action in tumor cells. To address these limitations, we developed an amphipathic peptide containing an RGD motif, Pep1, that encapsulated paclitaxel (PTX) and losartan potassium (LP) to form the drug-loaded peptide PL/Pep1. PL/Pep1 self-assembled into spherical nanoparticles (NPs) under normal physiological conditions and transformed into aggregates containing short nanofibers at acidic pH. The RGD peptide facilitated tumor targeting and the aggregates prolonged drug retention in the tumor, which allowed more drug to reach and accumulate in the tumor tissue to promote apoptosis and remodel the tumor microenvironment. The results of in vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed the superiority of PL/Pep1 in terms of targeting, prolonged retention and facilitated penetration for antitumor therapy. In conclusion, amphipathic peptides as coloaded drug carriers are a new platform and strategy for breast cancer chemotherapy.

Transforming the Petroleum Industry through Catalytic Oxidation Reactions vis-à-vis Preceramic Polymer Catalyst Supports

Preceramic polymers, for instance, are used in a variety of chemical processing industries and applications. In this contribution, we report on the catalytic oxidation reactions generated using preceramic polymer catalyst supports. Also, we report the full knowledge of the use of the remarkable catalytic oxidation, and the excellent structures of these preceramic polymer catalyst supports are revealed. This finding, on the other hand, focuses on the functionality and efficacy of future applications of catalytic oxidation of preceramic polymer nanocrystals for energy and environmental treatment. The aim is to design future implementations that can address potential environmental impacts associated with fuel production, particularly in downstream petroleum industry processes. As a result, these materials are being considered as viable candidates for environmentally friendly applications such as refined fuel production and related environmental treatment.

Photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants by carbon quantum dots functionalized g-C3N4: A review

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) has received much attention due to its unique characteristics of stable physicochemical features, facile preparation, and inexpensive cost. However, the bulk g-C₃N₄ has a weak capacity for pollutant degradation and needs to be modified for real application. Therefore, extensive research has been done on g-C₃N₄, and the discovery of the novel zero-dimensional nanomaterials known as carbon quantum dots (CQDs) provided it with a unique modification option. In this review, the development for the removal of organic pollutants by g-C₃N₄/CQDs was discussed. Firstly, the preparation of g-C₃N₄/CQDs were introduced. Then, the application and the degradation mechanism of g-C₃N₄/CQDs were briefly described. And the discussion of the influencing factors on g-C₃N₄/CQDs' ability to degrade organic pollutants came in third. Finally, the conclusions of photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants by g-C₃N₄/CQDs and future perspectives followed. This review will strengthen the understanding of the photocatalytic degradation of real organic wastewater by g-C₃N₄/CQDs, including their preparation, application, mechanism, and influencing factors.

Introducing Porosity into Refractory Molybdenum Boride through Controlled Decomposition of a Metastable Mo-Al-B Precursor

The high temperatures typically required to synthesize refractory compounds preclude the formation of high-energy morphological features, including nanoscopic pores that are beneficial for applications, such as catalysis, that require higher surface areas. Here, we demonstrate a low-temperature multistep pathway to engineer mesoporosity into a catalytic refractory material. Mesoporous molybdenum boride, α-MoB, forms through the controlled thermal decomposition of nanolaminate-containing sheets of the metastable MAB (metal-aluminum-boron) phase Mo₂AlB₂ and amorphous alumina. Upon heating, the Mo₂AlB₂ layers of the Mo₂AlB₂-AlO_x nanolaminate, which is derived from MoAlB, begin to bridge and decompose, forming inclusions of alumina in a framework of α-MoB. The alumina can be dissolved in aqueous sodium hydroxide in an autoclave, forming α-MoB with empty and accessible pores. Statistical analysis of the morphologies and dimensions of the pores reveals a correlation with grain size, which relates to the pathway by which the alumina inclusions form. The transformation of Mo₂AlB₂ to α-MoB is topotactic due to crystal structure relationships, resulting in a high density of stacking faults that can be modeled to account for the observed experimental diffraction data. Porosity was validated by comparing surface areas and demonstrating catalytic viability for the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Recent Advances in g-C3N4-Based Photocatalysts for NOx Removal

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) pollutants can cause a series of environmental issues, such as acid rain, ground-level ozone pollution, photochemical smog and global warming. Photocatalysis is supposed to be a promising technology to solve NOx pollution. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as a metal-free photocatalyst has attracted much attention since 2009. However, the pristine g-C3N4 suffers from poor response to visible light, rapid charge carrier recombination, small specific surface areas and few active sites, which results in deficient solar light efficiency and unsatisfactory photocatalytic performance. In this review, we summarize and highlight the recent advances in g-C3N4-based photocatalysts for photocatalytic NOx removal. Firstly, we attempt to elucidate the mechanism of the photocatalytic NOx removal process and introduce the metal-free g-C3N4 photocatalyst. Then, different kinds of modification strategies to enhance the photocatalytic NOx removal performance of g-C3N4-based photocatalysts are summarized and discussed in detail. Finally, we propose the significant challenges and future research topics on g-C3N4-based photocatalysts for photocatalytic NOx removal, which should be further investigated and resolved in this interesting research field.

Developing a dynamic magnetic flux template to guide 1D nanomaterial growth

A dynamic magnetic flux template (DMT) has been developed for preparing 1D nanomaterials efficiently. It can be quickly established and revoked without introducing any pollution. The DMT behaves like a template for guiding the orientation, bearing a 1D structure, activating the nucleation, and providing a driving force for 1D nanomaterial growth.

Soft Template-Based Synthesis of Mesoporous Phosphorus- and Boron-Codoped NiFe-Based Alloys for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Controlling the morphology, composition, and crystalline phase of mesoporous nonnoble metal catalysts is essential for improving their performance. Herein, well-defined P- and B-codoped NiFe alloy mesoporous nanospheres (NiFeB-P MNs) with an adjustable Ni/Fe ratio and large mesopores (11 nm) are synthesized via soft-template-based chemical reduction and a subsequent phosphine-vapor-based phosphidation process. Earth-abundant NiFe-based materials are considered promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) because of their low cost and high intrinsic catalytic activity. The resulting NiFeB-P MNs exhibit a low OER overpotential of 252 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 , which is significantly smaller than that of B-doped NiFe MNs (274 mV) and commercial RuO₂ (269 mV) in alkaline electrolytes. Thus, this work highlights the practicality of designing mesoporous nonnoble metal structures and the importance of incorporating P in metallic-B-based alloys to modify their electronic structure for enhancing their intrinsic activity.

H2O2 generation enhancement by ultrasonic nebulisation with a zinc layer for spray disinfection

With the outbreak of COVID-19, microbial pollution has gained increasing attention as a threat to human health. Consequently, many research efforts are being devoted to the development of efficient disinfection methods. In this context, hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) stands out as a green and broad-spectrum disinfectant, which can be produced and sprayed in the air directly by cavitation in ultrasonic nebulisation. However, the yield of H₂O₂ obtained by ultrasonic nebulisation is too low to satisfy the requirements for disinfection by spraying and needs to be improved to achieve efficient disinfection of the air and objects. Herein, we report the introduction of a zinc layer into an ultrasonic nebuliser to improve the production of H₂O₂ and generate additional Zn²⁺ by self-corrosion, achieving good disinfecting performance. Specifically, a zinc layer was assembled on the oscillator plate of a commercial ultrasonic nebuliser, resulting in a 21-fold increase in the yield of H₂O₂ and the production of 4.75 μg/mL Zn²⁺ in the spraying droplets. When the generated water mist was used to treat a bottle polluted with Escherichia coli for 30 min, the sterilisation rate reached 93.53%. This ultrasonic nebulisation using a functional zinc layer successfully enhanced the production of H₂O₂ while generating Zn²⁺, providing a platform for the development of new methodologies of spray disinfection.

Efficient Combination of G-C3 N4 and CDs for Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance: A Review of Synthesis, Strategies, and Applications

Recently, heterogeneous photocatalysts have achieved much interest on account of their great potential applications in resolving many tough energy and environmental troubles around the world through an ecologically sustainable way. Heterogeneous nanocomposites composed of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃ N₄ ) and carbon dots (CDs) possess broad spectrum absorption, appropriate electronic band structures, rapid carrier mobility, abundant reserves, excellent chemical stability, and facile synthesis methods, which make them promising composite photocatalysts for suitable applications such as photocatalytic solar fuels production and contaminant decomposition. With the rapid development in photocatalysis by hybridization of g-C₃ N₄ and CDs, a systematic summary and prospection of performance improvement are urgent and meaningful. This review first focuses on various kinds of effectively synthetic methods of composites. Following, the strategies available for enhanced performance, including morphology optimization, spectral absorption improvement, ternary or quaternary composition hybrid, lateral or vertical heterostructures construction, heteroatom doping, and so forth, are fully discussed. Then, the applications mainly in efficient photocatalytic hydrogen generation, photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction, and organic pollutants degradation are systematically demonstrated. Finally, the remaining issues and prospect of further development are proposed as some kind of guidance for powerful combination of g-C₃ N₄ and CDs with high efficiency to photocatalysis.

Dissecting Biological and Synthetic Soft-Hard Interfaces for Tissue-Like Systems

Soft and hard materials at interfaces exhibit mismatched behaviors, such as mismatched chemical or biochemical reactivity, mechanical response, and environmental adaptability. Leveraging or mitigating these differences can yield interfacial processes difficult to achieve, or inapplicable, in pure soft or pure hard phases. Exploration of interfacial mismatches and their associated (bio)chemical, mechanical, or other physical processes may yield numerous opportunities in both fundamental studies and applications, in a manner similar to that of semiconductor heterojunctions and their contribution to solid-state physics and the semiconductor industry over the past few decades. In this review, we explore the fundamental chemical roles and principles involved in designing these interfaces, such as the (bio)chemical evolution of adaptive or buffer zones. We discuss the spectroscopic, microscopic, (bio)chemical, and computational tools required to uncover the chemical processes in these confined or hidden soft-hard interfaces. We propose a soft-hard interaction framework and use it to discuss soft-hard interfacial processes in multiple systems and across several spatiotemporal scales, focusing on tissue-like materials and devices. We end this review by proposing several new scientific and engineering approaches to leveraging the soft-hard interfacial processes involved in biointerfacing composites and exploring new applications for these composites.

Ordered Mesoporous Silica Pyrolyzed from Single-Source Self-Assembled Organic-Inorganic Giant Surfactants

We report the preparation of hexagonal mesoporous silica from single-source giant surfactants constructed via dihydroxyl-functionlized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (DPOSS) heads and a polystyrene (PS) tail. After thermal annealing, the obtained well-ordered hexagonal hybrid was pyrolyzed to afford well-ordered mesoporous silica. A high porosity (e.g., 581 m²/g) and a uniform and narrow pore size distribution (e.g., 3.3 nm) were achieved. Mesoporous silica in diverse shapes and morphologies were achieved by processing the precursor. When the PS tail length was increased, the pore size expanded accordingly. Moreover, such pyrolyzed, ordered mesoporous silica can help to increase both efficiency and stability of nanocatalysts.

Biomorphic Ceramics: Synthesis and Characterization of Preceramic Polymer-Modified Melanin

Recent efforts have demonstrated that the morphology of ceramics can be manipulated to control both their deformation mechanism and mechanical performance. However, precise control of the ceramic nanostructure is still difficult to achieve. Biotemplating, leading to biomorphic materials, provides a facile route to manipulate the nanostructure of the resulting materials, and the use of melanin as a coating provides a new route to biotemplated materials. Melanin is underutilized for structural materials partly due to the cost of procuring it from natural sources and the inability to control the shape and sizes of melanin particles. Taking a combined synthetic biology and chemical synthesis approach, we report the melanization of Escherichia coli and its subsequent silanization and functionalization with preceramic polymers to make novel biomorphic silicon-based ceramic materials. Graft-to and graft-from reactions were used to append preceramic polymers to the melanin, followed by pyrolysis under argon. Samples were analyzed by FTIR, XRD, XPS, and TEM and found to retain the shape and size of the original cells with high fidelity. The homogeneity of coverage and yield of the resulting ceramic materials depended on the type of grafting reaction. This work provides a promising proof-of-concept that bacterial-templated ceramics can be readily made and opens a host of possibilities for further studies and applications.

Mesoporous TiO2-based architectures as promising sensing materials towards next-generation biosensing applications

In the past two decades, mesoporous TiO2 has emerged as a promising material for biosensing applications. In particular, mesoporous TiO2 materials with uniform, well-organized pores and high surface areas typically exhibit superior biosensing performance, which includes high sensitivity, broad linear response, low detection limit, good reproducibility, and high specificity. Therefore, the development of biosensors based on mesoporous TiO2 has significantly intensified in recent years. In this review, the expansion and advancement of mesoporous TiO2-based biosensors for glucose detection, hydrogen peroxide detection, alpha-fetoprotein detection, immobilization of enzymes, proteins, and bacteria, cholesterol detection, pancreatic cancer detection, detection of DNA damage, kanamycin detection, hypoxanthine detection, and dichlorvos detection are summarized. Finally, the future perspective and research outlook on the utilization of mesoporous TiO2-based biosensors for the practical diagnosis of diseases and detection of hazardous substances are also given.

An Overview of the Recent Progress in Polymeric Carbon Nitride Based Photocatalysis

Recently, polymeric carbon nitride (g-C₃ N₄ ) as a proficient photo-catalyst has been effectively employed in photocatalysis for energy conversion, storage, and pollutants degradation due to its low cost, robustness, and environmentally friendly nature. The critical review summarized the recent development, fundamentals, nanostructures design, advantages, and challenges of g-C₃ N₄ (CN), as potential future photoactive material. The review also discusses the latest information on the improvement of CN-based heterojunctions including Type-II, Z-scheme, metal/CN Schottky junctions, noble metal@CN, graphene@CN, carbon nanotubes (CNTs)@CN, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)/CN, layered double hydroxides (LDH)/CN heterojunctions and CN-based heterostructures for H₂ production from H₂ O, CO₂ conversion and pollutants degradation in detail. The optical absorption, electronic behavior, charge separation and transfer, and bandgap alignment of CN-based heterojunctions are discussed elaborately. The correlations between CN-based heterostructures and photocatalytic activities are described excessively. Besides, the prospects of CN-based heterostructures for energy production, storage, and pollutants degradation are discussed.

Hierarchically activated porous carbon derived from zinc-based fluorine containing metal-organic framework as extremely high specific capacitance and rate performance electrode material for advanced supercapacitors

In this work, a hierarchically activated porous carbon (APC) was synthesized using fluorine-containing metal-organic framework via facile combined carbonization and KOH activation treatments. The influences of activation conditions on the surface structures and electrochemical performance of APC were systematically studied. Afterwards, the electrochemical responses of APC electrode were further assessed from the cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge examinations by 6 M KOH electrolyte. The as-obtained APC electrode delivered the high specific capacitances of 540.8 and 280 F g^-1 at 1 and 500 A g^-1, correspondingly with superior capacitance retention of 94% after 250,000 cycles even at 100 A g^-1, which is showing that its outstanding capacitance, remarkable rate capacity, and very-long cyclic life. Furthermore, the as-assembled APC-based symmetrical supercapacitor offers a superb energy density of 19 Wh kg^-1 at 182 W kg^-1, indicating its large-scale application. Thus, this work proposes a potential route to synthesize highly efficient porous carbon material for the future development of energy storage systems.

Solid Nanoporosity Governs Catalytic CO2 and N2 Reduction

Global demand for green and clean energy is increasing day by day owing to ongoing developments by the human race that are changing the face of the earth at a rate faster than ever. Exploring alternative sources of energy to replace fossil fuel consumption has become even more vital to control the growing concentration of CO₂, and reduction of CO₂ into CO or other useful hydrocarbons (e.g., C₁ and C_≥2 products), as well as reduction of N₂ into ammonia, can greatly help in this regard. Various materials have been developed for the reduction of CO₂ and N₂. The introduction of pores in these materials by porosity engineering has been demonstrated to be highly effective in increasing the efficiency of the involved redox reactions, over 40% increment for CO₂ reduction to date, by providing an increased number of exposed facets, kinks, edges, and catalytically active sites of catalysts. By shaping the surface porous structure, the selectivity of the redox reaction can also be enhanced. In order to better understand this area benefiting rational design for future solutions, this review systematically summarizes and constructively discusses the porosity engineering in catalytic materials, including various synthesis methods, characterization of porous materials, and the effects of porosity on performance of CO₂ reduction and N₂ reduction.

Nanostructured Carbon Nitrides for CO2 Capture and Conversion

Carbon nitride (CN), a 2D material composed of only carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), which are linked by strong covalent bonds, has been used as a metal-devoid and visible-light-active photocatalyst owing to its magnificent optoelectronic and physicochemical properties including suitable bandgap, adjustable energy-band positions, tailor-made surface functionalities, low cost, metal-free nature, and high thermal, chemical, and mechanical stabilities. CN-based materials possess a lot of advantages over conventional metal-based inorganic photocatalysts including ease of synthesis and processing, versatile functionalization or doping, flexibility for surface engineering, low cost, sustainability, and recyclability without any leaching of toxic metals from photocorrosion. Carbon nitrides and their hybrid materials have emerged as attractive candidates for CO₂ capture and its reduction into clean and green low-carbon fuels and valuable chemical feedstock by using sustainable and intermittent renewable energy sources of sunlight and electricity through the heterogeneous photo(electro)catalysis. Here, the latest research results in this field are summarized, including implementation of novel functionalized nanostructured CNs and their hybrid heterostructures in meeting the stringent requirements to raise the efficiency of the CO₂ reduction process by using state-of-the-art photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, and feedstock reactions. The research in this field is primarily focused on advancement in the synthesis of nanostructured and functionalized CN-based hybrid heterostructured materials. More importantly, the recent past has seen a surge in studies focusing significantly on exploring the mechanism of their application perspectives, which include the behavior of the materials for the absorption of light, charge separation, and pathways for the transport of CO₂ during the reduction process.

Ordered mesoporous carbon assisted Fe-N-C for efficient oxygen reduction catalysis in both acidic and alkaline media

Fe-N-C catalyst obtained by high temperature pyrolysis is one of the most promising electrocatalysts for non-precious metal oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, up to now, the lesser density of active sites results in a substantial performance gap between the Fe-N-C materials and the conventional Pt/C ORR catalysts. Herein, an N-doped mesoporous carbon is employed as the support for the dispersion of poly-m-phenylenediamine. With high specific surface areas of 1526 m² g^-1, the as-prepared Fe-N-C materials show the half-wave potential of 0.89 V and 0.79 V in 0.1 M KOH and 0.5 M H₂SO₄, respectively. Notably, the superior methanol tolerance, as well as excellent stability, makes our Fe-N-C materials as competitive candidates for oxygen electrochemical catalysis.

Microwave Processing Controls the Morphology of Block Copolymer-Templated Mesoporous Cobalt Oxide Films

Microwave heating provides an efficient method to rapidly heat materials through interaction of microwaves with the media. Here, we demonstrate the rapid synthesis of mesoporous cobalt oxide films through the heating of the silicon substrate by microwaves. A non-sol-gel approach based on cobalt nitrate-citric acid complex cooperative assembly with a poly[methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)methacrylate]-block-poly(butyl acrylate) (PMPEGMA-b-PBA) block copolymer was used to fabricate the cobalt oxide through a cobalt carbonate intermediate. The time required to convert cobalt carbonate to cobalt oxide with the full removal of the PMPEGMA-b-PBA template can be decreased by two orders of magnitude with microwaves in comparison to standard heating in a furnace at 350 °C. At the highest microwave power examined (1500 W), this can be accomplished within 2 s, while >5 min is required at 350 °C in a furnace. At a microwave power of <400 W, there is insufficient energy to induce the transition from carbonate to oxide, but even at only 420 W, the oxide can be formed within 26 s. The rapid heating by the microwaves tends to increase the crystallinity and mean crystal size of the cobalt oxide within the mesoporous films. Despite the growth of larger average crystals, the pore size and porosity tend to be larger when the film is processed using microwaves. Higher microwave power leads to larger average crystals and average pore size. These results suggest that rapid processing to crystallize frameworks in mesoporous materials may allow for highly crystalline frameworks without loss of the templated mesostructure.

Fundamentals and recent progress relating to the fabrication, functionalization and characterization of mesostructured materials using diverse synthetic methodologies

Since 1990 and the invention of the very first generation of ordered mesoporous silica materials, several innovative methodologies have been applied to synthesize, characterize, and modify silica/non-silica mesoporous materials. The growth of the mesoporous materials field has generated significant environmental and economic advantages compared to various other industrial developments. According to the literature, there are several key synthesis approaches and parameters that can affect the structural, textural and morphological characteristics of mesoporous materials. To date, huge attempts have been made to maximize the activities and selectivities of these materials through either the in situ or post-synthesis functionalization of the large interior surface areas and internal mesostructured frameworks in the presence of specific organic/inorganic components. However, the main challenge is to provide good control over the incorporation and distribution of multiple guest components within the mesostructured hosts. Mesostructured materials have received great attention for various applications, such as being used in electronics, medicine, photocatalysis, catalyst supports, catalysis, absorbers, sensors, gas separation, etc. In the current paper, several recent developments have been highlighted and reviewed regarding the fabrication and characterization of siliceous/non-siliceous mesoporous materials via various synthetic approaches. Furthermore, the availability of diverse functionalization methods has been reviewed to provide comprehensive approaches for synthesizing new generations of suitably modified mesoporous materials with superior structural, physicochemical, and textural characteristics.

Control of Pore Size in Ordered Mesoporous Carbon-Silica by Hansen Solubility Parameters of Swelling Agent

The cooperative assembly of functional precursors with block copolymers (BCPs) is a powerful, general route to fabricate ordered mesoporous materials, but the precise tuning of the mesopore size generally requires trial and error to obtain the correct BCP template or appropriate swelling agent. Here, we demonstrate the ability to effectively modulate both expansion and contraction of the ordered cylindrical mesopores relative to those obtained from cooperatively assembled Pluronic F127, resol, and tetraethylorthosilicate. The two key physical parameters for the swelling agents are their hydrophobicity, as quantified by the octanol-water partition coefficient (K_ow), and Hansen solubility parameters that describe the interactions of the solvent with the different components of the BCP template. Four low volatility solvents are examined that span a wide K_ow with up to 90 wt % solvent relative to the Pluronic F127. Glycerol triacetate (K_ow < 1) can decrease the average mesopore size from 5.9 to 4.8 nm due to segmental screening of the interactions in the Pluronic F127 to decrease chain stretching at intermediate loadings. A modest increase in mesopore size to 8.1 nm can be achieved with trimethylbenzene (TMB, K_ow = 3.42). Dioctyl phthalate (DOP), which is slightly more hydrophobic (K_ow = 8.1), is more effective than TMB at expanding the pore size (maximum: 13.5 nm) without loss of ordered structure. A more hydrophobic solvent, tris (2-ethylhexyl) trimellitate (K_ow = 12.5), is less effective at increasing the pore size (maximum: 8.2 nm). The Hansen solubility parameters for DOP most closely match those of the hydrophobic segment in the Pluronic F217 template. We attribute this similarity, which is related to the solvent quality, to the improved efficacy of DOP in increasing the pore size. These results illustrate that both the Hansen solubility parameters (relative to the hydrophobic segment of the template) and relative hydrophobicity of the swelling agent determine the obtainable pore sizes in cooperatively assembled ordered mesoporous materials.

Organically Functionalized Mesoporous SBA-15 Type Material Bearing Fluorescent Sites for Selective Detection of HgII from Aqueous Medium

Hg(II) contamination in water resources is one of the major health issues in keeping the purity standard of the municipal water supply. Herein, we report a new mesoporous sensor probe material SBA-ABZ-PEA having a 2D-hexagonally ordered mesoporous framework bearing covalently bonded fluorescent sites, and this has been synthesized through a two-step post-synthesis grafting route. A pure silica mesoporous SBA-15 material has been functionalized with (3-chloropropyl)triethoxysilane (ClPTES) to obtain chloro-functionalized SBA-15, which was further reacted with 4-aminobenzaldehyde followed by treatment with 2-(2-pyridyl)-ethylamine resulting in functionalized 2D-hexagonal mesoporous sensor probe SBA-ABZ-PEA. Small angle PXRD, N₂ adsorption/desorption, HRTEM, TGA, and FT-IR studies have been carried out to characterize these materials. Our experimental results suggested successful grafting of the organic moiety on the SBA-15 surface along with preservation of mesoporosity throughout the grafting process. Photoluminescence measurements were carried out in the aqueous suspension of SBA-ABZ-PEA in the presence of different metal cations, like Na^I, Mg^II, Al^III, K^I, Ca^II, Mn^II, Co^II, Cu^II, Zn^II, Cd^II, Pb^II, and Hg^II. This result revealed that, among the various metal-ions, the emission intensity of the mesoporous sensing probe material SBA-ABZ-PEA has been dramatically quenched in the presence of the Hg^II ion. To check the sensitivity of the sensor probe, the fluorescence emission was also studied in the presence of different concentrations of Hg^II ions. A perfect linear plot between the concentrations of Hg^II ions in the aqueous medium with their corresponding fluorescence intensities with a detection limit of 1.2 × 10^-6 M has been observed.

Tuning Cooperative Assembly with Bottlebrush Block Co-polymers for Porous Metal Oxide Films Using Solvent Mixtures

Block copolymer templating enables the generation of well-defined pore sizes and geometries in a wide variety of frameworks, typically through evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA). Here, we systematically modulate the solvent quality with mixtures of tetrahydrofuran-ethanol (THF-EtOH) to manipulate the unimer/micelle ratio in the precursor solution to explore how the associated solution structure influences the final pore morphology. A bottlebrush block copolymer (BBCP) with poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(t-butyl acrylate) side chains was used as the template for pore formation. Irrespective of the solvent composition, a bimodal pore size distribution was obtained with mesopores templated by small aggregates of the BBCP unimers (potentially low aggregation number micelles) and macropores templated by large self-assembled BBCP micelles. The morphology and pore characteristics of the metal oxide films were dependent on the THF-EtOH composition. Interestingly, an intermediate solvent composition where the volume of micelles is approximately half the volume of unimers (in the precursor solution) leads to the best ordering of micelle-templated pores and also the maximum porosity in the films. The micelle/unimer ratios in the precursor solutions do not correspond directly to the bimodal pore distribution in the metal oxide films, which we attribute to kinetically trapped assembly of the BBCP at a low THF content. The increased critical micelle concentration at high THF composition leads to changes in the unimer/micelle ratio during solvent evaporation. These results appear to be universal for a number of metal oxides (cobalt, magnesium, and zinc) with the porosity maximized at a THF/EtOH ratio of 3:1. These results suggest the potential for enhancements in the porosity of block copolymer-templated films by EISA methods through judicious solvent selection.

Interdiffusive Surfactant Procedure for the Preparation of Nanoarchitectured Porous Films: Application to the Growth of Titania Thin Films on Silicon Substrates

Herein is reported the preparation of nanostructured mesoporous supported films, in this case, titanium dioxide nanoparticles on silicon wafer, according to a new approach taking place in two consecutive deposition steps: (i) coating of a homogeneous and continuous layer of a surfactant on the selected support and (ii) building up of a second layer of the fresh metal-oxide gel precursor, followed by thermal treatment to generate porosity. This approach represents an alternative way to soft-template procedures, as for instance, the largely applied evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method, which typically consists of a single-step deposition of the mixture of gel precursor and surfactant used as a soft template to create porosity. The main advantage of the procedure reported here compared to the EISA method is the possibility of reaching tunable textural characteristics along the growing film (pore size, shape, and distribution of pores) by using gels with nanoparticles preformed at different stages via a simple regulation of the residence time of the precursors deposited on the support containing the surfactant.

Molecularly Imprinted Materials for Selective Biological Recognition

Molecular imprinting is an approach of generating imprinting cavities in polymer structures that are compatible with the target molecules. The cavities have memory for shape and chemical recognition, similar to the recognition mechanism of antigen-antibody in organisms. Their structures are also called biomimetic receptors or synthetic receptors. Owing to the excellent selectivity and unique structural predictability of molecularly imprinted materials (MIMs), practical MIMs have become a rapidly evolving research area providing key factors for understanding separation, recognition, and regenerative properties toward biological small molecules to biomacromolecules, even cell and microorganism. In this review, the characteristics, morphologies, and applicability of currently popular carrier materials for molecular imprinting, especially the fundamental role of hydrogels, porous materials, hierarchical nanoparticles, and 2D materials in the separation and recognition of biological templates are discussed. Moreover, through a series of case studies, emphasis is given on introducing imprinting strategies for biological templates with different molecular scales. In particular, the differences and connections between small molecular imprinting (bulk imprinting, "dummy" template imprinting, etc.), large molecular imprinting (surface imprinting, interfacial imprinting, etc.), and cell imprinting strategies are demonstrated in detail. Finally, future research directions are provided.
