An approach to bimetallic catalysts by ligand design

C-H activation in bimetallic rhodium complexes to afford N-heterocyclic carbene pincer complexes

The pro-ligands 1,8-bis(di-R-phosphinomethyl)-2,3-dihydroperimidine (RH₂Pm, R = phenyl, cyclohexyl) react with [RhCl(CE)(PPh₃)₂] (E = O, S) to afford the bimetallic complexes [RhCl(CE)(μ-RH₂Pm)]₂ (E = O, S). Upon heating, these species undergo double C-H activation to afford the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) pincer complexes [RhCl(RPm)]. Reduction of [RhCl(CO)(μ-PhH₂Pm)]₂ with KC₈ results in the bimetallic rhodium(0) complex, [Rh(μ-CO)(PhH₂Pm)]₂, with a formal Rh-Rh bond and a hydrogen-bonding interaction between rhodium and the central methylene group (C-H⋯Rh = 2.802 Å). Upon treatment with tritylium, ferrocenium or triphenylcyclopropenium tetrafluoroborates this species undergoes double C-H activation to afford a mononuclear NHC pincer complex salt, [Rh(CO)(PhPm)]BF₄. Treatment of [RhCl(CO)(PhH₂Pm)]₂ with lithium (trimethylsilyl)acetylide provides another bimetallic species, [Rh(CCSiMe₃)(CO)(PhH₂Pm)]₂, however heating this species does not proceed cleanly to the monomeric NHC complex, [Rh(CCSiMe₃)(CO)(PhPm)] which may however be obtained from [RhCl(RPm)] and LiCCSiMe₃.

Aerobic Copper-Catalyzed Intramolecular Cascade Oxidative Isomerization/[4+4] Cyclization of 2,2'-Disubstituted Stilbenes

An aerobic copper-catalyzed cascade oxidative isomerization/[4+4] cyclization of 2,2'-disubstituted stilbenes is described. Under the mild CuCl/DBED/air catalytic system, various 5,10-heteroatom-containing tetrahydroindeno[2,1-a]indenes were efficiently prepared through the difunctionalizations of alkenes in a highly atom economic manner. Mechanistic investigations suggested the bicyclic product was likely formed through a sequence of rapid single-electron oxidation/[4+4] cyclization from 2,2'-disubstituted stilbene. The antarafacial manner of the thermally allowed [4+4] cyclization was further proven by series of control experiments and density functional theory calculations. Our findings provide an important addition to the aerobic copper-catalyzed oxidative cyclization.

A Base-Mediated Approach Towards Dihydrofuro[2,3-b]Benzofurans from 2-Nitrobenzofurans and 1,3-Dicarbonyls

A straight-forward approach for the synthesis of a dihydrofuro[2,3-b]benzofuran derivatives has been achieved through a base-mediated Michael addition of 1,3-dicarbonyls to 2-nitrobenzofurans followed by intramolecular cyclization. A variety of 1,3-dicarbonyls, including cyclic as well as trifluoromethylated ones, have been subjected to react with 2-nitrobenzofurans under optimal conditions, and the respective dihydrofuro[2,3-b]benzofurans could be accessed in moderate to excellent yields.

Heterobimetallic complexes of IrM (M = FeII, CoII, and NiII) core and bridging 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine: electronic structure and electrochemical behavior

Three complexes based on an Ir-M (M = Fe^II, Co^II, and Ni^II) heterobimetallic core and 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine (Ph₂PPy) ligand were synthesized via the reaction of trans-[IrCl(CO)(Ph₂PPy)₂] and the corresponding metal chloride. Their structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction as [Ir(CO)(μ-Cl)(μ-Ph₂PPy)₂FeCl₂]·2CH₂Cl₂ (2), [IrCl(CO)(μ-Ph₂PPy)₂CoCl₂]·2CH₂Cl₂ (3), and [Ir(CO)(μ-Cl)(μ-Ph₂PPy)₂NiCl₂]·2CH₂Cl₂ (4). Time-dependent DFT computations suggest a donor-acceptor interaction between a filled 5d_z² orbital on iridium and an empty orbital on the first-row metal atom, which is supported by UV-vis studies. Magnetic moment measurements show that the first-row metals are in their high-spin electronic configurations. Cyclic voltammetry data show that all the complexes undergo irreversible decomposition upon either reduction or oxidation. Reduction of 4 proceeds through an ECE mechanism. While these complexes are not stable to electrocatalysis conditions, the data presented here refine our understanding of the bonding synergies of the first-row and third-row metals.

Synthesis of A-Type Proanthocyanidins and Their Analogues: A Comprehensive Review

Proanthocyanidins (PACs) are oligomers or polymers composed of units of flavanols. A-type PACs are a subclass of PACs characterized by the presence of at least a double linkage between two consecutive monomers of flavanol. These A-type PACs are found in some fruits and spices and possess potential health benefits as a result of their interesting biological activities, and consequently, their isolation and synthesis have given rise to great interest in the past. This review summarizes the synthetic efforts made to obtain both naturally occurring A-type PACs and their structurally simplified analogues. Most of the synthetic protocols reported involve the addition of a π-nucleophilic molecule over a molecule with two electrophilic carbons, such as a chalcone, a flavylium salt, or a flavanol derivative, among others. Synthesis of A-type PACs remains an issue at a very early stage of development compared to that of PACs with single linkages between monomers (B-type PACs), but the advances that are taking place in the last few years point to a significant development of the subject in the near future.

A Cooperative Effect in a Novel Bimetallic Mo-V Nanocomplex Catalyzed Selective Aerobic C-H Oxidation

In this study, a new heterobimetallic Mo(VI)-V(V) organosilicon Schiff base complex has been prepared and characterized by different techniques, such as FTIR, Raman, MS, ICP-AES, TGA, and XPS. The bimetallic nanocomplex, revealed by TEM images, showed high oxidation stability and desired activity in the aerobic oxidation of a structurally diverse set of benzylic alcohols in ethanol as a safe solvent. Further, oxidation of benzylic hydrocarbons successfully occurred, producing the target compounds in high yields and excellent selectivities. Our results demonstrated a cooperative effect between Mo(VI) and V(V) as redox active sites in an organosilicon Schiff base framework. A facile and practical reusability of the solid catalyst at the end of the reaction was observed.

Novel iminopyridine derivatives: ligands for preparation of Fe(ii) and Cu(ii) dinuclear complexes

A series of imino- and amino-pyridine ligands based on dihydrobenzofurobenzofuran (BFBF) and methanodibenzodioxocine (DBDOC) backbones have been synthesized. These ligands form exclusively dinuclear complexes with metals such as iron(II) and copper(II). The structures for complexes 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 23, and 24 were determined by X-ray crystallography. The complexes show large distances for the metal nuclei and different geometries depending on the nature of the metal. An octahedral geometry was observed for the iron(II) complexes, while copper(II) complex 24 showed a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry. The iron(II) complexes showed activity as catalysts in the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides, obtaining moderate yields of cyclic carbonates.

Cyclodextrin and phosphorus(iii): a versatile combination for coordination chemistry and catalysis

Bi- and tri-metallic Rh and Ir complexes containing click derived bis- and tris-(pyrazolyl-1,2,3-triazolyl) N-N' donor ligands and their application as catalysts for the dihydroalkoxylation of alkynes

A series of bi-topic and tri-topic pyrazolyl-1,2,3-triazolyl donor ligands (; = 1,X-bis((4-((1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)methyl)benzene (X = 2, 3 and 4; o-C6H4(PyT)2, m-C6H4(PyT)2 and p-C6H4(PyT)2) and = 1,3,5-tris((4-((1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)methyl)benzene, 1,3,5-C6H3(PyT)3) were conveniently synthesised in 'one pot' reactions using the Cu(i) catalysed 'click' reaction. Rh(i), Ir(i), Rh(iii) and Ir(iii) complexes with ligands of the general formulae C6H6-n[(PyT)M(CO)2]n[BAr]n (M = Rh, Ir; n = 2, 3; ; ) and C6H6-n[(PyT)MCp*Cl]n[BAr]n (M = Rh, Ir; n = 2, 3; ; ) were synthesised and fully characterised. In solution each of the bi- or tri-metallic complexes and exists as a mixture of two (, ) or three ( and ) diastereomers due to the presence of a chiral centre at each metal centre in these complexes. The solid state structures of complexes and were determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography and showed that each bidentate arm of these multitopic ligands coordinates to the Rh or Ir centre in a bidentate fashion via the pyrazolyl-N2 and 1,2,3-triazolyl N3' donors. The intermetallic distances in these solid state structures vary from 8.66 Å to 15.17 Å. These complexes were assessed as catalysts for the dihydroalkoxylation of alkynes using the cyclisation of 2-(5-hydroxypent-1-ynyl)benzyl alcohol, , to a mixture of two spiroketals, 2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-spirol[furan-2,3'-isochroman], , and 3',4',5',6'-tetrahydro-spiro[isobenzofuran-1(3H),2'(2H)pyran], , as the model reaction. The Rh(i) complexes (), with the highest TOF of 2052 h(-1) for complex , were the most active catalysts when compared with the other complexes under investigation here. The Ir(i) complexes () were moderately active as catalysts for the same transformation. No significant enhancement in catalytic reactivity was observed with the Rh(i) series bi- and trimetallic complexes () when compared with their monometallic analogues. The bi- and trimetallic Ir(i) complexes () were much more efficient as catalysts for this transformation than their monometallic analogues, suggesting some intermetallic cooperativity. Rh(iii), , and Ir(iii), , complexes were not active as catalysts for this transformation.

Catalyst-controlled regio- and stereoselective synthesis of diverse 12H-6,12-methanodibenzo[d,g][1,3]dioxocines

Regio- and stereoselective synthesis of 12H-6,12-methanodibenzo[d,g][1,3]dioxocines has been accomplished by the EDDA and PTSA-catalyzed cascade reactions of resorcinols and 2-hydroxychalcones.

A simple and catalyst free one pot access to the pyrazolone fused 2,8-dioxabicyclo[3.3.1]nonanes

Synthesis of a series of novel aryl and heteroaryl fused 2,8-dioxabicyclo[3.3.1]nonanes (3) was accomplished by one pot, catalyst free reaction of 2-hydroxy chalcones (1) with 3-trifluoromethyl substituted pyrazolones (2) in xylene at reflux temperature. The role of –CF₃ in formation of 3 was confirmed by comparing with 3-methyl pyrazolones.

Preparation and physical properties of early-late heterobimetallic compounds featuring Ir-M bonds (M = Ti, Zr, Hf)

Treatment of Cp*Ir N(t)Bu (1) with the appropriate metallocene equivalent is an effective route for the preparation of the heterobimetallic complexes Cp*Ir(μ-N(t)Bu)MCp(2) (2-M, M = Ti, Zr, Hf). The electronic structures of the isostructural series of compounds, 2-M, are described with reference to single-crystal X-ray, Raman, UV-vis, and cyclic voltammetry data. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to aid in the interpretation of this experimental work. Treatment of the zirconium or hafnium congeners with 2,6-lutidinium triflate leads to protonation of the Ir-M bond, to afford Cp*Ir(μ-N(t)Bu)(μ-H)MCp(2)OTf (3-M, M = Zr, Hf). Compound 3-Zr was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and independently prepared by the reaction of 1 and Cp(2)Zr(H)Cl in the presence of Me(3)SiOTf. In reactions analogous to those for 2-Zr, 2-Hf reacts with S(8) and aryl azides to insert an S-atom or aryl azide fragment into the metal-metal bond, yielding Cp*Ir(μ-N(t)Bu)(μ-S)HfCp(2) (6-Hf) and Cp*Ir(μ-N(t)Bu)(N(3)Ph)HfCp(2) (4-Hf), respectively. Heating 4-Hf results in N(2) extrusion to form Cp*Ir(μ-N(t)Bu)(NPh)HfCp(2) (5-Hf). The kinetics of the latter reaction were studied to obtain activation parameters and a Hammett trend; these data are compared to those for the analogous reaction involving Ir-Zr heterobimetallics.
