Abstract
We report the reactivity of N-phosphinoguanidines of the formula (HNR)(Ph2PNR)C(NAr) (R = iPr and Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3 [Dipp] for 1a, R = iPr and Ar = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2 [Mes] for 1b, and R = Cy and Ar = Dipp for 1c), prepared in high yields from the corresponding trisubstituted guanidines, toward main group metal alkyls AlMe3, ZnEt2, MgnBu2, and nBuLi to obtain novel phosphinoguanidinato and phosphinimine-amidinato compounds. Reactions of 1a-c with AlMe3 at room temperature led to the kinetic phosphinoguanidinato products [Al{κ2-N,N'-(NR)C(NAr)(NRPPh2)}Me2] (2a-c), whereas the mild heating (60-80 °C) of solutions of 2a-c give the thermodynamic phosphinimine-amidinato products [Al{κ2-N,N'-(NR)C(NAr)(PPh2NR)}Me2] (3a-c) after ligand rearrangement. The reactions of equimolar amounts of 1a-c and ZnEt2 initially give solutions containing unstable phosphinoguanidinato compounds [Zn{κ2-N,P-(NR)C(NAr)(NRPPh2)}Et] (4a-c), which rearrange upon mild heating to the phosphinimine-amidinato derivatives [Zn{κ2-N,N'-(NR)C(NAr)(PPh2NR)}Et] (6a-c). Bis(phosphinoguanidinato) compounds [Zn{κ2-N,P-(NR)C(NAr)(NRPPh2)}2] (5a-c) can be obtained under mild conditions (<45 °C) in THF, whereas bis(phosphinimine-amidinato) compounds [Zn{κ2-N,N'-(NR)C(NAr)(PPh2NR)}2] (7a-c) are also accessible under more forcing conditions (55-100 °C) from (i) ZnEt2 and 1b,c (2 equiv), (ii) 6a and 1a, or (iii) 5b,c. Equimolar mixtures of MgnBu2 and 1a-c in THF at room temperature give unstable phosphinimine-amidinato monoalkyl products [Mg{κ2-N,N'-(NR)C(NAr)(PPh2NR)}nBu(THF)2] (8a-c), whereas 2 equiv of 1a,b are required to reach the bischelate compounds [Mg{κ2-N,N'-(NiPr)C(NAr)(PPh2NiPr)}2] (9a,b). Finally, phosphinoguanidinato compounds [Li{κ2-N,P-(NR)C(NDipp)(NRPPh2)}(THF)2] (10a,c) were obtained in the reactions of 1a,c with nBuLi in THF under ambient conditions. The removal of the solvent from solutions of 10a,c under partial vacuum leads to the dinuclear compounds [Li2{μ-κ2-N,N':κ1-N-(NR)C(NDipp)(NRPPh2)}2(THF)2] (11a,c) after the decoordination of one of the THF molecules in 10a,c and dimerization. Heating solutions of 10a,c at 60 °C triggers ligand rearrangement to give phosphinimine-amidinato compounds [Li{κ2-N,N'-(NR)C(NDipp)(PPh2NR)}(THF)2] (12a,c). We also propose a mechanism for the ligand rearrangement reaction from 10a to give 12a, supported by DFT calculations, which fits nicely with our experimental results. It essentially involves a carbodiimide deinsertion reaction followed by a [3 + 2] cycloaddition between the resulting lithium phosphino-amide and the carbodiimide.

Abstract
The carbodiphosphorane, (Ph3P)2C, reacts with Me3Al and Me3Ga to afford the adducts, [(Ph3P)2C]AlMe3 and [(Ph3P)2C]GaMe3, which have been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. (Ph3P)2C also reacts with Me2Zn and Me2Cd to generate an adduct but the formation is reversible on the NMR time scale. At elevated temperatures, however, elimination of methane and cyclometalation occurs to afford [κ2-Ph3PC{PPh2(C6H4)}]ZnMe and [κ2-Ph3PC{PPh2(C6H4)}]CdMe. Analogous cyclometalated products, [κ2-Ph3P{CPPh2(C6H4)}]ZnN(SiMe3)2 and [κ2-Ph3P{CPPh2(C6H4)}]CdN(SiMe3)2, are also obtained upon reaction of (Ph3P)2C with Zn[N(SiMe3)2]2 and Cd[N(SiMe3)2]2. The magnesium compounds, Me2Mg and {Mg[N(SiMe3)2]2}2, likewise react with (Ph3P)2C to afford cyclometalated derivatives, namely [κ2-Ph3PC{PPh2(C6H4)}]MgN(SiMe3)2 and {[κ2-Ph3PC{PPh2(C6H4)}]MgMe}2. While this reactivity is similar to the zinc system, the magnesium methyl complex is a dimer with bridging methyl groups, whereas the zinc complex is a monomer. The greater tendency of the methyl groups to bridge magnesium centers rather than zinc centers is supported by density functional theory calculations.

Abstract
Neutral zinc alkoxide complexes show high activity toward the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters and carbonates, to generate biodegradable plastics applicable in several areas. Herein, we use a ferrocene-chelating heteroscorpionate complex in redox-switchable polymerization reactions, and we show that it is a moderately active catalyst for the ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide, ɛ-caprolactone, trimethylene carbonate, and δ-valerolactone. Uniquely for this type of catalyst, the oxidized complex has a similar polymerization activity as the corresponding reduced compound, but displays significantly different rates of reaction in the case of trimethylene carbonate and δ-valerolactone. Investigations of the oxidized compound suggest the presence of an organic radical rather than an Fe(III) complex. Electronic structure and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to support the proposed electronic states of the catalytic complex and to help explain the observed reactivity differences. The catalyst was also compared with a monomeric phenoxide complex to show the influence of the phosphine-zinc interaction on catalytic properties. Abstract
The preparation of the bulky secondary amide N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-2,2-dimethylpropanamide and the determination of its crystal structure at 173(2) K are reported. The structure displays disorder of the tBu methyl groups due to thermal motion and an infinite N–H····O=C hydrogen-bonded chain described by a [Formula: see text] graph set. Reaction of this amide with ZnCl2 or ZnBr2 in tetrahydrofuran (THF) results in dihalo-(tetrahydrofurano)-(N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)–2,2-dimethylpropanamido)-zinc(II) complexes (Cl, Br) for which the crystal structures have also been determined. These complexes, as well as a chloroform solvate of the dichloro-complex, contain N–H····X–Zn hydrogen-bonded chains described by [Formula: see text] graph sets. Evaporative crystallization results in the loss of both chloroform and THF to afford crystals determined to be bis(μ2-chloro)-dichloro-bis(N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-2,2-dimethylpropanamido)-dizinc(II) by single crystal X-ray diffraction. This dimeric complex shows a complex network of N–H····Cl–Zn hydrogen bonds describable by [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] chains, small [Formula: see text] molecular “squares”, and larger [Formula: see text] rings.

Abstract
This report describes the synthesis, structure, and reactivity of aluminum complexes containing tridentate biphenolate phosphine ligands of the type [RP(2-O-3,5-C6H2tBu2)2]2- (R = tBu (2a), Ph (2b)). Alkane elimination of AlMe3 with one equiv. of H2[2a] or H2[2b] in THF at 0 °C cleanly affords colorless crystalline [2a]AlMe(THF) (3a) and [2b]AlMe(THF) (3b), respectively. An X-ray diffraction study of 3a showed it to be a five-coordinate THF-bound species, whose coordination geometry is best described as trigonal bipyramidal, having the phosphorus donor and THF at axial positions. Treatment of either in situ prepared or isolated methyl complexes 3a,b with one equiv. of benzyl alcohol in toluene or THF generated their corresponding benzyloxides {[2a,b]Al(μ2-OCH2Ph)}2 (4a,b). An X-ray diffraction study of 4a revealed a dimeric structure, in which the coordination geometry of aluminum is also distorted trigonal bipyramidal with the tridentate 2a ligand being facially bound. In the presence of one equiv. of benzyl alcohol, complex 3a is a competent catalyst precursor for the living ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) and rac-lactide (rac-LA), producing poly(ε-caprolactone) and poly(rac-lactide), respectively, in a controlled manner. As such, well-defined block copolymers of ε-CL with rac-LA can also be prepared by catalytic 3a. Kinetic studies revealed that 3a catalyzes the polymerization of rac-lactide at a rate 2-fold faster than that of 3b, indicating the significance of the P-substituent effect on this catalysis. Interestingly, the polymerization rate of rac-lactide by 3a is 16.5 times faster than that of l-lactide under otherwise identical conditions.

Abstract
The P,O-type phosphinophenol proligands (1·H, 2-PPh2-4-Me-6-Me-C6H2OH; 2·H, 2-PPh2-4-Me-6-(t)Bu-C6H2OH) readily react with one equiv. of ZnEt2 to afford in high yields the corresponding Zn(II)-ethyl dimers of the type [(κ(2)-P,O)Zn-Et]2 (3 and 4) with two μ-OPh bridging oxygens connecting the two Zn(II) centers, as determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies in the case of 3. Based on diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY), both species 3 and 4 retain their dimeric structures in solution. The alcoholysis reaction of Zn(II) alkyls 3 and 4 with BnOH led to the high yield formation of the corresponding Zn(II) benzyloxide species [(κ(2)-P,O)Zn-OBn]2 (5 and 6), isolated in a pure form as colorless solids. The centrosymmetric and dimeric nature of Zn(II) alkoxides 5 and 6 in solution was deduced from DOSY NMR experiments and multinuclear NMR data. Though the heteroleptic species 5 is stable in solution, its analogue 6 is instable in CH2Cl2 solution at room temperature to slowly decompose to the corresponding homoleptic species 8via the transient formation of (κ(2)-P,O)2Zn2(μ-OBn)(μ–κ(1):κ(1)-P,O) (6′). Crystallization of compound 6 led to crystals of 6′, as established by XRD analysis. The reaction of ZnEt2 with two equiv. of 1·H and 2·H allowed access to the corresponding homoleptic species of the type [Zn(P,O)2] (7 and 8). All gathered data are consistent with compound 7 being a dinuclear species in the solid state and in solution. Data for species 8, which bears a sterically demanding P,O-ligand, are consistent with a mononuclear species in solution. The Zn(II) alkoxide species 5 and the [Zn(P,O)2]-type compounds 7 and 8 were evaluated as initiators of the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactide (LA), ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) and trimethylene carbonate (TMC). Species 5 is a well-behaved ROP initiator for the homo-, co- and ter-polymerization of all three monomers with the production of narrow disperse materials under living and immortal conditions. Though species 7 and 8 are ROP inactive on their own, they readily polymerize LA in the presence of a nucleophile such as BnOH to produce narrow disperse PLA, presumably via an activated-monomer ROP mechanism.

Abstract
Under anhydrous conditions and in the absence of a Lewis-base solvent, a zinc chloride complex with tri-tert-butyl-phosphane as the μ-bridged dimer is formed, viz. di-μ-chlorido-bis-[chlorido-bis-(tri-tert-butyl-phosphane)zinc], [ZnCl4(C12H27P)2], (1), which features a nearly square-shaped (ZnCl)2 cyclic core and whose Cl atoms inter-act weakly with C-H groups on the phosphane ligand. In the presence of THF, monomeric di-chlorido-(tetra-hydro-furan-κO)(tri-tert-butyl-phosphane-κP)zinc, [ZnCl2(C4H8O)(C12H27P)] or [P(tBu3)(THF)ZnCl2], (2), is formed. This slightly distorted tetra-hedral Zn complex has weak C-H⋯Cl inter-actions between the Cl atoms and phosphane and THF C-H groups. Under ambient conditions, the hydrolysed complex tri-tert-butyl-phospho-nium aqua-tri-chlorido-zincate 1,2-di-chloro-ethane monosolvate, (C12H28P)[ZnCl3(H2O)]·C2H4Cl2 or [HPtBu3](+) [(H2O)ZnCl3](-)·C2H4Cl2, (3), is formed. This complex forms chains of [(H2O)ZnCl3](-) anions from hydrogen-bonding inter-actions between the water H atoms and Cl atoms that propagate along the b axis.

Abstract
The synthesis and structural characterization of a series of homo- and heteropolynuclear clusters constructed with a potentially tetradentate phosphine triphenolate ligand are presented. Treatment of tris(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)phosphine (H3[O3P]) with 3 equiv of nBuLi in diethyl ether at -35 °C affords hexanuclear Li6[O3P]2(OEt2)2 (1) as colorless crystals. In situ lithiation of H3[O3P] with 3 equiv of nBuLi in THF at -35 °C followed by metathetical reactions with MnCl2 or NiCl2(DME) gives crystals of forest green pentanuclear MnLi4[O3P]2(THF)3 (2) or dark brown tetranuclear Ni2Li2[O3P]2(THF)2 (3), respectively. Alkane elimination of ZnR2 (R = Me, Et) with H3[O3P] in THF at 25 °C generates high yields of colorless crystalline trinuclear Zn3[O3P]2(THF)2 (4). The cluster structures of 1-4 were all determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. These molecules represent the first examples of metal complexes supported by phosphine triphenolate derivatives. The cluster 2 contains a paramagnetic core of high spin Mn(II) (S = 5/2) as indicated by solution and solid state magnetic susceptibility measurements.

Abstract
Eight bis-ligated, homoleptic, zinc complexes were synthesized through the reaction of NNO Schiff base ketoimines bearing varying substituents with diethyl zinc in an inert atmosphere glovebox at room temperature and isolated in 62-95% yield. The complexes were characterized with (1)H, (13)C, and (19)F nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, absorbance spectroscopy, high resolution mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The complexes were shown to adopt distorted octahedral coordination geometry around zinc. The (1)H and (19)F NMR spectra of complexes 1-7 showed stable zinc coordination at 300 K while the effect of steric encumbrance and two trifluoromethyl groups in complex 8 was investigated with variable temperature NMR. The bis-ligated zinc complexes were effective initiators for the ring opening polymerization of L-lactide into poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). With [L-lac]/[Zn complex] = 50, the bis-ligated zinc complexes yielded percentage conversion of 14-98% with polymerization times varying from 15-1440 min, where the longest reaction times were required when two trifluoromethyl groups were present. The addition of 4-fluorophenol co-catalyst resulted in up to a 5-fold increase in the percentage conversion in toluene solution and up to a 14-fold increase in bulk melt polymerization with reductions in the poly-dispersity index values for the isolated PLLA. Addition of 4-fluorophenol to complex 1 was studied with (1)H and (19)F NMR and appeared to yield an in situ generated zinc alkoxide complex.

Abstract
The preparation and characterization of new Zn(II) complexes of the type [(PPP)ZnR] in which R = Et (1) or N(SiMe(3))(2) (2) and PPP is a tridentate monoanionic phosphido ligand (PPP-H = bis(2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)phosphine) are reported. Reaction of ZnEt(2) and Zn[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2) with one equivalent of proligand PPP-H produced the corresponding tetrahedral zinc ethyl (1) and zinc amido (2) complexes in high yield. Homoleptic (PPP)(2) Zn complex 3 was obtained by reaction of the precursors with two equivalents of the proligand. Structural characterization of 1-3 was achieved by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy ((1)H, (13)C, and (31)P) and X-ray crystallography (3). Variable-temperature (1)H and (31)P NMR studies highlighted marked flexibility of the phosphido pincer ligand in coordination at the metal center. A DFT calculation on the compounds provided theoretical support for this behavior. The activities of 1 and 2 toward the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone and of L- and rac-lactide were investigated, also in combination with an alcohol as external chain-transfer agent. Polyesters with controlled molecular parameters (M(n), end groups) and low polydispersities were obtained. A DFT study on ring-opening polymerization promoted by these complexes highlighted the importance of the coordinative flexibility of the ancillary ligand to promote monomer coordination at the reactive zinc center. Preliminary investigations showed the ability of these complexes to promote copolymerization of L-lactide and ε-caprolactone to achieve random copolymers whose microstructure reproduces the composition of the monomer feed.

Abstract
Efficient protocols for the syntheses of well-defined, solvent-free cations of the large alkaline-earth (Ae) metals (Ca, Sr, Ba) and their smaller Zn and Mg analogues have been designed. The reaction of 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-(morpholinomethyl)phenol ({LO(1)}H), 2-{[bis(2-methoxyethyl)amino]methyl}-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol ({LO(2)}H), 2-[(1,4,7,10-tetraoxa-13-azacyclopentadecan-13-yl)methyl]-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol ({LO(3)}H), and 2-[(1,4,7,10-tetraoxa-13-azacyclo-pentadecan-13-yl)methyl]-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropan-2-ol ({RO(3)}H) with [H(OEt(2))(2)](+)[H(2)N{B(C(6)F(5))(3)}(2)](-) readily afforded the doubly acidic pro-ligands [{LO(1)}HH](+)[X](-) (1), [{LO(2)}HH](+)[X](-) (2), [{LO(3)}HH](+)[X](-) (3), and [{RO(3)}HH](+)[X](-) (4) ([X](-) = [H(2)N{B(C(6)F(5))(3)}(2)](-)). The addition of 2 to Ca[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2)(THF)(2) and Sr[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2)(THF)(2) yielded [{LO(2)}Ca(THF)(0.5)](+)[X](-) (5) and [{LO(2)}Sr(THF)](+)[X](-) (6), respectively. Alternatively, 5 could also be prepared upon treatment of {LO(2)}CaN(SiMe(3))(2) (7) with [H(OEt(2))(2)](+)[X](-). Complexes [{LO(3)}M](+)[X](-) (M = Zn, 8; Mg, 9; Ca, 10; Sr, 11; Ba, 12) and [{RO(3)}M](+)[X](-) (M = Zn, 13; Mg, 14; Ca, 15; Sr, 16; Ba, 17) were synthesized in high yields (70-90%) by reaction of 3 or 4 with the neutral precursors M[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2)(THF)(x) (M = Zn, Mg, x = 0; M = Ca, Sr, Ba, x = 2). All compounds were fully characterized by spectroscopic methods, and the solid-sate structures of compounds 1, 3, 7, 8, 13, 14, {15}(4)·3CD(2)Cl(2), {16}(4)·3CD(2)Cl(2), and {{17}(4)·EtOH}·3CD(2)Cl(2) were determined by X-ray diffraction crystallography. Whereas the complexes are monomeric in the case of Zn and Mg, they form bimetallic cations in the case of Ca, Sr and Ba; there is no contact between the metal and the weakly coordinating anion. In all metal complexes, the multidentate ligand is κ(6)-coordinated to the metal. Strong intramolecular M···F secondary interactions between the metal and F atoms from the ancillary ligands are observed in the structures of {15}(4)·3CD(2)Cl(2), {16}(4)·3CD(2)Cl(2), and {{17}(4)·EtOH}·3CD(2)Cl(2). VT (19)F{(1)H} NMR provided no direct evidence that these interactions are maintained in solution; nevertheless, significant Ae···F energies of stabilization of 25-26 (Ca, Ba) and 40 kcal·mol(-1) (Sr) were calculated by NBO analysis on DFT-optimized structures. The identity and integrity of the cationic complexes are preserved in solution in the presence of an excess of alcohol (BnOH, (i)PrOH) or L-lactide (L-LA). Efficient binary catalytic systems for the immortal ring-opening polymerization of L-LA (up to 3,000 equiv) are produced upon addition of an excess (5-50 equiv) of external protic nucleophilic agents (BnOH, (i)PrOH) to 8-12 or 13-17. PLLAs with M(n) up to 35,000 g·mol(-1) were produced in a very controlled fashion (M(w)/M(n) ≈ 1.10-1.20) and without epimerization. In each series of catalysts, the following order of catalytic activity was established: Mg ≪ Zn < Ca < Sr ≈ Ba; also, Ae complexes supported by the aryloxide ligand are more active than their parents supported by the fluorinated alkoxide ancillary, possibly owing to the presence of Ae···F interactions in the latter case. The rate law -d[L-LA]/dt = k(p)·[L-LA](1.0)·[16](1.0)·[BnOH](1.0) was established by NMR kinetic investigations, with the corresponding activation parameters ΔH(++) = 14.8(5) kcal·mol(-1) and ΔS(++) = -7.6(2.0) cal·K(-1)·mol(-1). DFT calculations indicated that the observed order of catalytic activity matches an increase of the L-LA coordination energy onto the cationic metal centers with parallel decrease of the positive metal charge.
