Abstract
Since the last century, we have witnessed the development of molecular magnetism which deals with magnetic materials based on molecular species, i.e., organic radicals and metal complexes. Among them, the broadest attention was devoted to molecule-based ferro-/ferrimagnets, spin transition materials, including those exploring electron transfer, molecular nanomagnets, such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), molecular qubits, and stimuli-responsive magnetic materials. Their physical properties open the application horizons in sensors, data storage, spintronics, and quantum computation. It was found that various optical phenomena, such as thermochromism, photoswitching of magnetic and optical characteristics, luminescence, nonlinear optical and chiroptical effects, as well as optical responsivity to external stimuli, can be implemented into molecule-based magnetic materials. Moreover, the fruitful interactions of these optical effects with magnetism in molecule-based materials can provide new physical cross-effects and multifunctionality, enriching the applications in optical, electronic, and magnetic devices. This Review aims to show the scope of optical phenomena generated in molecule-based magnetic materials, including the recent advances in such areas as high-temperature photomagnetism, optical thermometry utilizing SMMs, optical addressability of molecular qubits, magneto-chiral dichroism, and opto-magneto-electric multifunctionality. These findings are discussed in the context of the types of optical phenomena accessible for various classes of molecule-based magnetic materials.

Abstract
Magnetic recording using femtosecond laser pulses has recently been achieved in some dielectric media, showing potential for ultrafast data storage applications. Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are metal complexes with two degenerate magnetic ground states and are promising for increasing storage density, but remain unexplored using ultrafast techniques. Here we have explored the dynamics occurring after photoexcitation of a trinuclear µ3-oxo-bridged Mn(III)-based SMM, whose magnetic anisotropy is closely related to the Jahn-Teller distortion. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy in solution reveals oscillations superimposed on the decay traces due to a vibrational wavepacket. Based on complementary measurements and calculations on the monomer Mn(acac)3, we conclude that the wavepacket motion in the trinuclear SMM is constrained along the Jahn-Teller axis due to the µ3-oxo and µ-oxime bridges. Our results provide new possibilities for optical control of the magnetization in SMMs on femtosecond timescales and open up new molecular-design challenges to control the wavepacket motion in the excited state of polynuclear transition-metal complexes.

Abstract
Crystal engineering of magnetic relaxation in supramolecular networks based on almost isotropic cyanido-bridged {Mn9[W(CN)8]6L8(solv)8} clusters decorated by bulky 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine (But2bpy) and 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Ph2phen) ligands is presented. The three new compounds {MnII9[WV(CN)8]6(But2bpy)8(MeOH)8}·Pri2O·13MeOH (1), {MnII9[WV(CN)8]6(But2bpy)8(MeOH)6(H2O)2}·4Pri2O·2H2O (1a), and {MnII9[WV(CN)8]6(Ph2phen)8(MeOH)8}·29MeOH·6H2O (2) were characterized structurally and magnetically. Compound 1 exhibits unequivocal domination of repulsive intercluster contacts operating between the side But groups leading to intercluster distances exceeding 10 Å in all three dimensions. Compound 1a reveals a 1-dimensional (1D) supramolecular chain structure with very close intercluster distances of 6.7 Å realized through the direct W-CNHO-Mn hydrogen bonds along the chain, further isolated by the above repulsive ButBut synthons. Compound 2 shows significant separation in all three directions with the intercluster distances close to 10, 12 and 13.5 Å. However, in contrast to 1, these separations are accompanied by indirect hydrogen bond arrays and local π-π interactions of potential to assist in the transfer of weak magnetic interactions. The dc magnetic data show the signature of S = 39/2 in the ground state, which is typical in this group of compounds. The high-spin clusters are accompanied by different intercluster interactions, illustrated by the effective zJ' values of +0.010 cm-1 (1), +0.008 cm-1 (1a) and +0.001 cm-1 (2). The low temperature ac susceptibility measurements revealed a temperature- and field-dependent magnetic relaxation time for all 1, 1a and 2 compounds (τ1, τ1a-fast, and τ2-fast in the range 10-3-10-4 s). In contrast and only in the case of 1a and 2, an additional temperature independent slow process was detected (τ1a-slow and τ2-slow located between 0.1 s and 1 s). The magnetic relaxations were correlated with the obtained supramolecular networks, indicating the significant role of dipolar fields, weak non-covalent interactions, hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions.

Abstract
Simultaneous retention of SMM behaviour and of optical activity is demonstrated upon surface deposition for a chiral SMM.
The synthesis and characterization of a chiral, enneanuclear Mn(iii)-based, Single-Molecule Magnet, [Mn9O4(Me-sao)6(L)3(MeO)3(MeOH)3]Cl (1; Me-saoH2 = methylsalicylaldoxime, HL = lipoic acid) is reported. Compound 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic P212121 space group and consists of a metallic skeleton describing a defect super-tetrahedron missing one vertex. The chirality of the [MnIII9] core originates from the directional bridging of the Me-sao2– ligands via the –N–O– oximate moieties, which define a clockwise (1ΔΔ) or counter-clockwise (1ΛΛ) rotation in both the upper [MnIII3] and lower [MnIII6] subunits. Structural integrity and retention of chirality upon dissolution and upon deposition on (a) gold nanoparticles, 1@AuNPs, (b) transparent Au(111) surfaces, 1ΛΛ@t-Au(111); 1ΔΔ@t-Au(111), and (c) epitaxial Au(111) on mica surfaces, 1@e-Au(111), was confirmed by CD and IR spectroscopies, mass spectrometry, TEM, XPS, XAS, and AFM. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements demonstrate the simultaneous retention of SMM behaviour and optical activity, from the solid state, via dissolution, to the surface deposited species.

Abstract
We report field-dependent magnetization measurements on monolayers of [Dy(Pc)2] on quartz, prepared by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The films are thoroughly characterized by means of X-ray reflectivity and atomic force microscopy. The magnetisation of the sample is measured through the magnetic circular dichroism of a ligand-based electronic transition.

Abstract
Salicylamidoxime was used to synthesize 13 new polynuclear Mn(III) complexes. We present the crystallographic structures, the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization measurements of eight of them (1-8) with the general formula [Mn(6)O(2)(H(2)N-sao)(6)(L)(2)(solvent)(4-6)] (L = carboxylate, chloride, 2-cyanophenolate; solvent = H(2)O, MeOH, EtOH, py). These complexes consist of two trinuclear {Mn(III)(3)(μ(3)-O)(H(2)N-sao)(3)}(+) cationic units linked together via two oximate and two phenolate oxygen atoms. All behave as single-molecule magnets, with the spin ground state varying from 4 to 12 and anisotropy energy barriers from 24 to 86 K, the latter being as high as the present record barrier in the Mn(6) complexes. DFT calculations were performed to compute the exchange magnetic coupling constants J between the metallic ions and to provide an orbital interpretation of exchange. Our results are in line with previously reported results with the parent salicylaldoxime derivatives. The Mn-N-O-Mn torsion angle appears as the main parameter controlling the J values. The critical angle where the exchange coupling between two Mn(III) switches from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic is 27°, less than the one found in related complexes with salicylaldoxime (30°). We propose a structural classification of the {Mn(6)} complexes in four classes depending on the coordination of the axial carboxylate. The work points out the structural flexibility of such systems, their sensitivity to solvent effects and their ability to achieve high anisotropy energy barriers by simple desolvation.

Abstract
The use of derivatised salicylaldoximes in manganese chemistry has led to the synthesis of a family of approximately fifty hexanuclear ([Mn(III)(6)]) and thirty trinuclear ([Mn(III)(3)]) Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs). Deliberate, targeted structural distortion of the metallic core afforded family members with increasingly puckered configurations, leading to a switch in the pairwise magnetic exchange from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic. Examination of both the structural and magnetic data revealed a semi-quantitative magneto-structural correlation, from which the factors governing the magnetic properties could be extracted and used for predicting the properties of new family members and even more complicated structures containing analogous building blocks. Herein we describe an overview of this extensive body of work and discuss its potential impact on similar systems.
