Abstract
Addition of DMSO is found to greatly accelerate the aqueous hydrolysis of organohalides to alcohols, providing a neutral, more efficient, milder and more economic process. Mechanistic studies using 18 O-DMSO and 18 O-H2 O showed that, contrary to the opinion that DMSO works as a dipolar solvent to enhance water's nucleophilicity, the accelerating effect comes from a complete oxygen transfer from DMSO to organohalides through generation of ROS+ Me2 ⋅X- salts through C-O bond formation, followed by O-S bond disassociative hydrolysis of ROS+ Me2 ⋅X- with water. This method is applicable to a wide range of organohalides and thus may have potential for practical industrial application, owing to easy recovery of DMSO from the H2 O/DMSO mixture by regular vacuum rectification.

Abstract
A practical, efficient and environmentally benign catalytic protocol for the oxidative cross-coupling reaction of halides with amines, oxidative self-coupling of amines and oxidation of halides was developed with inorganic-ligand supported ZnPOM (NH4)4[ZnMo6O18(OH)6] using molecular oxygen. This method mainly utilizes an inorganic polymolybdate ligand to support the Zn2+ ion, avoiding the use of complicated organic ligands.

Abstract
A water-based thermoregulated system for Pd-catalyzed Sonogashira reactions is presented, which allows for not only a highly efficient homogeneous catalytic reaction, but also an easy separation/recovery of the catalyst. The novel catalytic system exhibits high efficiency and excellent reusability. In addition, the Sonogashira reactions are performed with Pd(OAc)2 without a copper co-catalyst.

Abstract

Point-of-care detection of pathogens
is medically valuable but
poses challenging trade-offs between instrument complexity and clinical
and analytical sensitivity. Here we introduce a diagnostic platform
utilizing lithographically fabricated micron-scale forms of cubic
retroreflectors, arguably one of the most optically detectable human
artifacts, as reporter labels for use in sensitive immunoassays. We
demonstrate the applicability of this novel optical label in a simple
assay format in which retroreflector cubes are first mixed with the
sample. The cubes are then allowed to settle onto an immuno-capture
surface, followed by inversion for gravity-driven removal of nonspecifically
bound cubes. Cubes bridged to the capture surface by the analyte are
detected using inexpensive, low-numerical aperture optics. For model
bacterial and viral pathogens, sensitivity in 10% human serum was
found to be 104 bacterial cells/mL and 104 virus
particles/mL, consistent with clinical utility.

Abstract
PEG-based ionic liquids are a new appealing group of solvents making the link between two distinct but very similar fluids: ionic liquids and poly(ethylene glycol)s. They find applications across a range of innumerable disciplines in science, technology, and engineering. In the last years, the possibility to use these as alternative solvents for organic synthesis and catalysis has been increasingly explored. This Review highlights strategies for their synthesis, their physical properties (critical point, glass transition temperature, density, rheological properties), and their application in reactions catalyzed by metals (such as Pd, Cu, W, or Rh) or as organic solvent (for example for multicomponent reactions, organocatalysis, CO2 transformation) with special emphasis on their toxicity, environmental impact, and biodegradability. These aspects, very often neglected, need to be considered in addition to the green criteria usually considered to establish ecofriendly processes.
