Abstract
Described here is a mild and stereoselective protocol for the synthesis of [3]dendralenes via the intermolecular dimerization of allenes. With the proper choice of a ruthenium catalyst, a range of unactivated 1,1-disubstituted allenes, without prefunctionalization in the allylic position, reacted efficiently to provide rapid access to densely substituted [3]dendralenes. An intermolecular C-C bond and three different types of C═C double bonds (di-, tri-, and tetrasubstituted) embedded in an acyclic structure were constructed with good to high E/Z stereocontrol. This is in contrast to the known catalytic protocols that focus on allenes with prefunctionalization at the allylic position and/or monosubstituted allenes, which would proceed by a different mechanism or require less stereocontrol. The silyl-substituted dendralene products are precursors of other useful dendralene molecules. Density functional theory (DFT) studies and control experiments supported a mechanism involving oxidative cyclometalation, β-H elimination (the rate-determining step), and reductive elimination.

Abstract
The combustion energy and standard molar enthalpy of formation of crystalline 6-phenyl-1,5-diazabicyclo[3.1.0]hexane (PDABH) were determined using an isoperibolic calorimeter with a static bomb. PDABH is the first diaziridine for which the experimental value of the enthalpy of formation was obtained. This value was validated by the theoretical values of gas phase enthalpy of formation and enthalpy of sublimation. The gas phase enthalpy of formation was calculated using the DLPNO-CCSD(T1)/CBS method in conjunction with isodesmic-type reactions. This method was chosen in comparison to another high quality evaluative method (G4), which has been shown to provide unreliable results for cyclic nitrogen containing compounds. The descriptors of the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) were used to estimate the enthalpy of sublimation of PDABH. The proposed MEP model is based on experimental enthalpies of sublimation for 75 compounds structurally similar to PDABH. The high-level ab initio calculations of gas phase enthalpies of formation combined with enthalpies of sublimations estimated using descriptors of MEP allow predicting the enthalpies of formation of diaziridines in the solid phase.

Abstract
A general methodology allowing the preparation of phosphonylated 1-spirocyclopropyl analogues of glycosyl-1-phosphates is reported. The scope of this reaction has been assessed using various exo-glycals easily obtained from the corresponding pyranoses and furanoses. The cyclopropanation was found to be stereospecific, and the cis/trans selectivity only depends on the E/Z configuration of the starting exo-glycal. The four possible isomers of spirocyclopropyl ribose-1-phosphonate could thus be prepared in a controlled manner, protected and deprotected.

Abstract
We report the development of two complementary methods for the Cu-catalyzed anti-Markovnikov borylation of one specific olefin in 2-substituted [n]dendralenes (n = 3-6). The first protocol operates with a bisphosphine ligand and occurs with high regio- and chemoselectivity for the terminal double bond, independently of the number of cross-conjugated alkenes. We show that the use of a chiral phosphanamine ligand enables the highly chemo-, regio-, and enantioselective borylation of the alkene cross-conjugated with the terminal olefin in [n]dendralenes.

Abstract
A copper-catalyzed protoboration of borylated dendralenes is reported. The method employs an NHC-Cu catalyst and provides access to 1,4-addition products with excellent levels of chemo-, regio- and stereoselectivity. The resulting diene bis(boronates) are oxidized to the corresponding diene diols which are synthetically versatile building blocks.

Abstract
An efficient palladium-catalyzed oxidative C-C bond forming cascade reaction of allenes involving a coupling between an enallene and an allenyne followed by a carbocyclization of the generated Pd-intermediate was developed. This cascade reaction afforded functionalized cross-conjugated polyenes. The enallene is initially activated by palladium and reacts with the allenyne to give the cross-conjugated polyenes.

Abstract
The synthesis of trifluoromethylated cyclopropenes is often associated with important applications in drug discovery and functional materials. In this report, we describe the use of readily available chiral rhodium(II) catalysts for a highly efficient asymmetric cyclopropenation reaction of fluorinated donor–acceptor diazoalkanes with a broad variety of aliphatic and aromatic alkynes. Further studies highlight the unique reactivity of fluorinated donor–acceptor diazoalkanes in the synthesis of oligo‐cyclopropenes. Subsequent C−H functionalization of trifluoromethyl cyclopropenes furnishes densely substituted cyclopropene frameworks and also allows the alternative synthesis of bis‐cyclopropenes.

Abstract
The two simplest branched acyclic structures comprising only conjugated C═C units, namely, [3]dendralene (3-methylene-1,4-pentadiene) and [4]dendralene (3,4-dimethylene-1,5-hexadiene), were first reported in 1955 and 1962, respectively. No higher members of the series were described in the literature until 2000. This Account describes the modern phase of dendralene chemistry, driven to a large extent by research performed within the author's group. The first synthesis of the parent dendralene family allowed access to the hydrocarbons in batches of up to 5 mg. The synthetic approach took into account the prevailing dogma of the time, specifically that these compounds would be very reactive species and hence difficult to handle in the laboratory. As such, a route involving the cheleotropic elimination of SO2 from stable, and generally insoluble, 3-sulfolene-masked precursors was devised. Our second-generation approach was of significantly higher value in preparative terms, allowing the syntheses of the first six members of the unsubstituted [n]dendralenes (i.e., n = 3-8) directly, on scales of hundreds of milligrams to decagrams, using commercially available precursors and standard laboratory equipment and methods. This work demonstrated that the assumed high reactivity and instability this family of compounds was erroneous and ultimately led to the development of syntheses of structurally related cross-conjugated systems including substituted dendralenes, tetravinylethylene, 1,1-divinylallene, and furan-containing analogues of the dendralenes. Cross-coupling reactions feature strongly in the syntheses of these compounds, and methods involving single- to multifold Stille, Kumada, and Negishi couplings are mainstays of this work. The even parity [n]dendralenes were shown to exhibit enhanced stability over the odd parity congeners, a result that can be attributed to conformational effects. π-Bond-rich branched hydrocarbons are demonstrated to have significant value in the rapid generation of structural complexity. Pericyclic processes are particularly useful in this regard, with the dendralenes and their relatives serving as multidienes, participating in diene-transmissive cycloaddition sequences, sometimes in combination with electrocyclizations, to generate fused and bridged multicyclic systems containing many new covalent bonds. The outcomes of exploratory investigations into pericyclic sequences involving dendralenes are presented, along with methods developed to control chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, and stereoselectivity. Distinct from their use in diene-transmissive sequences, the dendralenes also serve as multialkenes, for the direct synthesis of polyols and oligo-cyclopropanes. Finally, the deployment of π-bond-rich branched hydrocarbons in the shortest total synthesis of a pseudopterosin natural product is summarized, as a prelude to future prospects in the areas of hydrocarbon chemistry and target synthesis.

Abstract
Ruthenium-catalyzed cascade transformations for the synthesis of 2,3-cyclo[3]dendralenes and multicomponent processes based thereon to generate complex polycycles are presented. The combination of allylation-cyclization sequences with diene-transmissive Diels-Alder reactions allows the rapid and selective construction of natural-product-like motifs from easily accessible starting materials in a one-pot process and provides a new method to access potential drug candidates.

Abstract
An increasing number of synthetic organic chemists are embracing the philosophy of efficiency. Herein we highlight multi-bond forming processes, which form two or more new covalent bonds in a single synthetic operation. Such processes, which have the ability to rapidly increase structural complexity, are preeminent in contemporary synthetic organic chemistry. In this short review we classify, analyse, and contrast contemporary multi-bond forming processes, frame these cutting edge contributions within a historical context, and speculate on likely future developments in the area.

Abstract
The Simmons-Smith cyclopropanation is a widely used method to synthesize cyclopropanes from alkenes using methylene iodide and a zinc reagent. A novel class of organozinc species, RXZnCH(2)Y, has been found to efficiently cyclopropanate alkenes, including traditionally unreactive unfunctionalized alkenes. The reactivity and selectivity of this class of organozinc reagents can be regulated by tuning the electronic and/or steric nature of the RX group attached to Zn. During recent years, this class of organozinc reagent has been widely used in organic synthesis as a reagent for cyclopropanation and other useful synthetic transformations. Catalytic, asymmetric versions of this reaction have been developed providing high enantiomeric excess for unfunctionalized olefins.

Abstract
[3]Dendralene and [4]dendralene are converted smoothly into tricarbonyliron complexes. The structures of four complexes analyzed by DFT and single-crystal X-ray analysis show that, in contrast to free hydrocarbons, complexed dendralenes prefer a roughly in-plane conformation. The complexes are stable towards Fe(CO)(3) group migration up to 150 °C. The synthetic value of Fe(CO)(3) complexation in the dendralene series is demonstrated through a variety of selective synthetic manipulations (Diels-Alder reaction, dipolar cycloaddition, Simmons-Smith cyclopropanation, dihydroxylation, olefin cross metathesis) that are not achievable by direct transformation of the free hydrocarbons. Application to the synthesis of a previously unreported, highly reactive linear/cross-conjugated hydrocarbon is also described.
