Abstract
Molecular shuttles are typical molecular machines that could be applied in various fields. The motion modes of wheel components in rotaxanes could be strategically modulated by external stimuli, such as pH, ions, solvent, light, and so on. Light is particularly attractive because it is harmless and can be operated in a remote mode and usually no byproducts are formed. Over the past decade, many examples of light-driven molecular shuttles are emerging. Accordingly, this review summarizes the recent research progress of light-driven molecular shuttles. First, the light-driven mechanisms of molecular motions with different functional groups are discussed in detail, which show how to drive photoresponsive or non-photoresponsive molecular shuttles. Subsequently, the practical applications of molecular shuttles in different fields, such as optical information storage, catalysis for organic reactions, drug delivery, and so on, are demonstrated. Finally, the future development of light-driven molecular shuttle is briefly prospected.

Abstract
A molecular shuttle comprising a pillar[6]arene macrocyclic ring and an axle with two equal-energy-level stations connected by an azobenzene unit was synthesised. The E isomer of the azobenzene functioned as "open gate", allowing the pillar[6]arene ring to rapidly shuttle back-and-forth between the two stations. Ultraviolet irradiation induced photo-isomerisation of the azobenzene from E to Z form. The Z isomer of the azobenzene functioned as a "closed gate", inhibiting shuttling of the pillar[6]arene ring.

Abstract
Among stimulus-responsive molecular ring-on-thread rotaxanes and pseudorotaxanes, variants incorporating photochromic sub-units are attracting considerable attention as their properties and structure can be remotely and precisely controlled, additionally without producing chemical waste. The focus herein is on photoswitching-driven assembly/disassembly and modulation of properties resulting from light-activated isomerization or changes in electronic properties.

Abstract
Since the advent of supramolecular chemistry, there has been keen interest in the synthesis of interlocked molecules, given their unique potential to act as receptors, molecular machines and even motors. Despite advances in the complexity of molecular machines that can be synthesised and operated in solution, reports of the operation or even attachment of complex supramolecular systems on solid surfaces are less common. Synthetic challenges and a lack of adequate characterisation techniques to monitor the thermodynamic and kinetic influences governing assembly at the solution-surface interface has slowed progress in this area of research. This Review looks at the developments in the field of covalently assembled interlocked architectures on gold, silica and polymer surfaces, highlighting the differences observed between solution and surface assembly of these unique structures.

Abstract
Herein we demonstrate redox switchable emission from a sensitised, europium-ferrocene containing, molecular film assembled by a novel nitrene-based strategy. Electrochemical modulation of europium emission upon switching the ferrocene moiety's redox state is ascribed to the reversible generation of a quenching ferrocenium species.

Abstract
The recruitment of DO3A-derived lanthanide complexes by ligation to isophthalic acid and catechol-modified gold surfaces, and their resulting sensitization, is reported herein. Predictably pH-dependent surface recruitment is associated with the expected fingerprint europium and terbium emission characteristics. The intensity of the lanthanide luminescence scales exponentially with spacer length, indicating a strong quenching interaction between the lanthanide and the gold surface. The switchable catechol oxidation state provides a means of electrochemically triggering the release of prior ligated complexes.

Abstract
The photophysical properties of a multicomponent [1]rotaxane bearing a β-cyclodextrin ring covalently connected to an axle comprising an azobenzene photoisomerisable moiety and a naphthalimide-type fluorescent stopper are investigated by a combined experimental and computational study. The absorption and fluorescence spectra, and particularly the induced circular dichroism (ICD) signal, are determined. The latter shows a sign relation that cannot be rationalised in terms of the simple general rules commonly employed to analyse the ICD spectra of achiral guests encircled by chiral hosts. To assist the interpretation of experimental results, DFT and time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations are performed to explore the availability of low-energy conformations and to model their spectroscopic response. Molecular dynamics simulations performed in water show the interconversion of a number of conformers, the contribution of which to the ICD signal is in agreement with the observation.
