The Selective Separation of Carnosic Acid and Rosmarinic Acid by Solid-Phase Extraction and Liquid-Liquid Extraction: A Comparative Study

Rosmarinus officinalis leaves (ROLs) are widely used in the food and cosmetics industries due to their high antioxidant activity and fascinating flavor properties. Carnosic acid (CA) and rosmarinic acid (RA) are regarded as the characteristic antioxidant components of ROLs, and the selective separation of CA and RA remains a significant challenge. In this work, the feasibility of achieving the selective separation of CA and RA from ROLs by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) was studied and compared. The experiments suggested that SPE with CAD-40 macroporous resin as the adsorbent was a good choice for selectively isolating CA from the extracts of ROLs and could produce raw CA with purity levels as high as 76.5%. The LLE with ethyl acetate (EA) as the extraction solvent was more suitable for extracting RA from the diluted extracts of ROLs and could produce raw RA with a purity level of 56.3%. Compared with the reported column chromatography and LLE techniques, the developed SPE-LLE method not only exhibited higher extraction efficiency for CA and RA, but can also produce CA and RA with higher purity.

Ionic liquid facilitated melting of the metal-organic framework ZIF-8

Hybrid glasses from melt-quenched metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been emerging as a new class of materials, which combine the functional properties of crystalline MOFs with the processability of glasses. However, only a handful of the crystalline MOFs are meltable. Porosity and metal-linker interaction strength have both been identified as crucial parameters in the trade-off between thermal decomposition of the organic linker and, more desirably, melting. For example, the inability of the prototypical zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) ZIF-8 to melt, is ascribed to the instability of the organic linker upon dissociation from the metal center. Here, we demonstrate that the incorporation of an ionic liquid (IL) into the porous interior of ZIF-8 provides a means to reduce its melting temperature to below its thermal decomposition temperature. Our structural studies show that the prevention of decomposition, and successful melting, is due to the IL interactions stabilizing the rapidly dissociating ZIF-8 linkers upon heating. This understanding may act as a general guide for extending the range of meltable MOF materials and, hence, the chemical and structural variety of MOF-derived glasses.

Parametrizing the Spatial Dependence of 1H NMR Chemical Shifts in π-Stacked Molecular Fragments

Most recently a renewed interest in several areas has arisen in factors governing the 1H NMR chemical shift (1H CS) of protons in aromatic systems. Therefore, it is important to describe how 1H CS values are affected by π-stacking intermolecular interactions. The parametrization of radial and angular dependences of the 1H CS is proposed, which is based on conventional gauge-independent atomic orbital (GIAO) calculations of explicit molecular fragments. Such a parametrization is exemplified for a benzene dimer with intermonomer vertical and horizontal distances which are in the range of values often found in crystals of organic compounds. Results obtained by the GIAO calculations combined with B3LYP and MP2 methods were compared, and revealed qualitatively the same trends in the 1H CS data. The parametrization was found to be quantitatively correct for the T-shaped benzene dimers, and its limitations were discussed. Parametrized 1H CS surfaces should become useful for providing additional restraints in the search of site-specific information through an analysis of structurally induced 1H CS changes.

Electropolymerization of robust conjugated microporous polymer membranes for rapid solvent transport and narrow molecular sieving

Pore size uniformity is one of the most critical parameters in determining membrane separation performance. Recently, a novel type of conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) has shown uniform pore size and high porosity. However, their brittle nature has prevented them from preparing robust membranes. Inspired by the skin-core architecture of spider silk that offers both high strength and high ductility, herein we report an electropolymerization process to prepare a CMP membrane from a rigid carbazole monomer, 2,2’,7,7’-tetra(carbazol-9-yl)-9,9’-spirobifluorene, inside a robust carbon nanotube scaffold. The obtained membranes showed superior mechanical strength and ductility, high surface area, and uniform pore size of approximately 1 nm. The superfast solvent transport and excellent molecular sieving well surpass the performance of most reported polymer membranes. Our method makes it possible to use rigid CMPs membranes in pressure-driven membrane processes, providing potential applications for this important category of polymer materials.

Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have great potential in membrane applications but are often brittle. Here, the authors develop an electropolymerization process to form a skin-core architecture which allows them to overcome mechanical limitations while keeping the excellent separation performance of CMP membranes.

Investigating discrepancies between experimental solid-state NMR and GIPAW calculation: NC-N 13C and OH⋯O 1H chemical shifts in pyridinium fumarates and their cocrystals

An NMR crystallography analysis is presented for four solid-state structures of pyridine fumarates and their cocrystals, using crystal structures deposited in the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre, CCDC. Experimental one-dimensional one-pulse ¹H and ¹³C cross-polarisation (CP) magic-angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and two-dimensional ¹⁴N-¹H heteronuclear multiple-quantum coherence MAS NMR spectra are compared with gauge-including projector augmented wave (GIPAW) calculations of the ¹H and ¹³C chemical shifts and the ¹⁴N shifts that additionally depend on the quadrupolar interaction. Considering the high ppm (>10 ​ppm) ¹H resonances, while there is good agreement (within 0.4 ​ppm) between experiment and GIPAW calculation for the hydrogen-bonded NH moieties, the hydrogen-bonded fumaric acid OH resonances are 1.2-1.9 ​ppm higher in GIPAW calculation as compared to experiment. For the cocrystals of a salt and a salt formed by 2-amino-5-methylpyridinium and 2-amino-6-methylpyridinium ions, a large discrepancy of 4.2 and 5.9 ​ppm between experiment and GIPAW calculation is observed for the quaternary ring carbon ¹³C resonance that is directly bonded to two nitrogens (in the ring and in the amino group). By comparison, there is excellent agreement (within 0.2 ​ppm) for the quaternary ring carbon ¹³C resonance directly bonded to the ring nitrogen for the salt and cocrystal of a salt formed by 2,6-lutidinium and 2,5-lutidinium, respectively.

NMR crystallography of molecular organics

Developments of NMR methodology to characterise the structures of molecular organic structures are reviewed, concentrating on the previous decade of research in which density functional theory-based calculations of NMR parameters in periodic solids have become widespread. With a focus on demonstrating the new structural insights provided, it is shown how "NMR crystallography" has been used in a spectrum of applications from resolving ambiguities in diffraction-derived structures (such as hydrogen atom positioning) to deriving complete structures in the absence of diffraction data. As well as comprehensively reviewing applications, the different aspects of the experimental and computational techniques used in NMR crystallography are surveyed. NMR crystallography is seen to be a rapidly maturing subject area that is increasingly appreciated by the wider crystallographic community.

Solid-state NMR characterization of tri-ethyleneglycol grafted polyisocyanopeptides

In aqueous media, ethylene glycol substituted polyisocyanopeptides (PICPs) change their state (undergo a sol-to-gel transition) as a response to temperature. This makes them promising materials for various biomedical applications, for instance, for controlled drug release and non-damaging wound dressing. To utilize PICP in biomedical applications, understanding of the origin of the gelation process is needed, but this is experimentally difficult because of the notoriously low gelator concentration in combination with the slow polymer dynamics in the sample. This paper describes a detailed characterization of the dried state of PICPs by solid-state NMR measurements. Both the (13) C and the (1) H NMR resonances were assigned using a combination of 1D cross-polarization magic angle spinning, 2D (13) C-(1) H heteronuclear correlation spectra and (1) H-(1) H single quantum-double quantum experiments. In addition, the chemical groups involved in dipolar interaction with each other were used to discuss the dynamics and spatial conformation of the polymer. In contrast to other PICP polymers, two resonances for the backbone carbon are observed, which are present in equal amounts. The possible origin of these resonances is discussed in the last section of this work. The data obtained during the current studies will be further used in elucidating mechanisms of the bundling and gelation. A comprehensive picture will make it possible to tailor polymer properties to meet specific needs in different applications. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Visualising substrate-fingermark interactions: Solid-state NMR spectroscopy of amino acid reagent development on cellulose substrates

Most spectroscopic studies of the reaction products formed by ninhydrin, 1,2-indanedione-zinc (Ind-Zn) and 1,8-diazafluoren-9-one (DFO) when reacted with amino acids or latent fingermarks on paper substrates are focused on visible absorption or luminescence spectroscopy. In addition, structural elucidation studies are typically limited to solution-based mass spectrometry or liquid nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, which does not provide an accurate representation of the fingermark development process on common paper substrates. The research presented in this article demonstrates that solid-state carbon-13 magic angle spinning NMR ((13)C-MAS-NMR) is a technique that can not only be utilised for structural studies of fingermark enhancement reagents, but is a promising technique for characterising the effect of paper chemistry on fingermark deposition and enhancement. The latter opens up a research area that has been under-explored to date but has the potential to improve our understanding of how fingermark secretions and enhancement reagents interact with paper substrates.

Heteronuclear proton double quantum-carbon single quantum scalar correlation in solids

A new NMR experiment that exploits the advantages of proton double quantum (DQ) NMR through a proton DQ-carbon single quantum (SQ) correlation experiment in the solid state is proposed. Analogous to the previously proposed 2D (1)H (DQ)-(13)C refocused INEPT experiment (Webber et al., 2010), the correlation between (1)H and (13)C is achieved through scalar coupling evolution, while the double quantum coherence among protons is generated through dipolar couplings. However, the new experiment relies on (13)C transverse coherence for scalar transfer. The new experiment dubbed MAS-J-(1)H (DQ)-(13)C-HMQC, is particularly suited for unlabeled molecules and can provide higher sensitivity than its INEPT counterpart. The experiment is applied to four different samples.

Sensitivity enhancement of double quantum NMR spectroscopy by modified CPMG

A modified Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) sequence for sensitivity enhancement of dipolar coupled homonuclear spin pairs in static solid-state NMR is presented. The modified CPMG block uses the Hahn-solid-Hahn echo as basic element of the CPMG echo train to refocus the homonuclear dipolar coupling and chemical shift anisotropy. The new CPMG sequence is dubbed as Hahn-solid-Hahn Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (HSHCPMG). We demonstrate a gain in signal to noise ratio of approximately 4.2 using HSHCPMG sequence in double quantum filtered CP experiment for 5%-(13)C(2)-(15)N-glycine. The resulting gain in sensitivity in the spikelet spectrum does not compromise the anisotropic information that is available from static NMR lineshapes. As an example, relative orientation angles of chemical shift anisotropy tensors for the alpha and carbonyl carbons in glycine are determined from the 2D DOQSY experiment recorded with the HSHCPMG block in the acquisition dimension. The resultant relative orientation angles of the two CSA tensors are compared to those obtained from 2D DOQSY experiment acquired without sensitivity enhancement as well as to the data as available from single crystal NMR experiments.
