Abstract
This study investigates the temperature responsive behavior of inclusion complexes formed by weakly anionic alkyl ethoxy carboxylates and α (αCD) and β-cyclodextrins (βCD). Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) was performed to probe the structural behaviour at the 1-100 nanometer scale of the hierarchical assemblies at different temperatures. The phase transitions and thermodynamics were systematically monitored as a function of the degree of ionization of the surfactant by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Herein, we investigate the effect of the surfactant degree of ionization on the thermoresponsive properties of the inclusion complex supramolecular assemblies. Inclusion complexes formed with the ionized surfactant spontaneously assemble into multilayered structures, which soften with increasing temperature. We also found that the presence of charges is not only required to impart order to the supramolecular assemblies, but also induced in-plane crystallization of the inclusion complexes. Finally, the use of a weakly anionic surfactant allows us to probe the interplay between the charge density and temperature on the assembly of surfactant-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes. This study helps to improve the design of multi-responsive supramolecular systems based on cyclodextrins.

Abstract
In this work, the inclusion complexes of alkyl ethoxy carboxylates with α-cyclodextrin (αCD) and β-cyclodextrin (βCD) were investigated. The thermodynamics of the complexation process was probed by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and volumetry as a function of the degree of ionization of the surfactant. The complexation process was shown to be an enthalpically driven pH-independent process. For both types of cyclodextrins, the complexes were found to spontaneously self-assemble into highly-ordered supramolecular aggregates probed by small-angle neutron scattering and electron and optical microscopy. Herein, we report the formation of thin platelets for nonionized surfactant systems and equally spaced multilayered hollow cylinders for ionized systems in a hierarchical self-assembly process. In addition, the analysis allowed unveiling the effect of the number of ethylene oxides in the surfactants and the CD cavity size on the morphology of the aggregates. Finally, this study also highlights the importance of examining the tuning parameters' influence on the short and long-range interactions involved in the control of the assembly process.

Carrier-Free, Dual-Functional Nanorods Via Self-Assembly Of Pure Drug Molecules For Synergistic Chemo-Photodynamic Therapy. Int J Nanomedicine 2019; 14:8665-8683. Abstract
BACKGROUND The combination of chemo-photodynamic therapy based on nano-technology has emerged as a preferable and promising measure for synergetic antitumor therapy. PURPOSE The aim of this study was expected to overcome most of the safety concerns from nano-carriers and improve the chemo-photodynamic synergistic antitumor efficacy. METHODS Herein, we reported a facile and effective approach based on the self-assembly of chemotherapeutic agent 10-hydroxycamptothecin (HCPT) and photosensitizer chlorin e6 (Ce6) for preparing stably dual-functional nanorods (NRs). RESULTS The chemical thermodynamic parameters obtained from isothermal titration calorimeter (ITC) and the microcosmic configuration snapshots acquired by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations verified that HCPT and Ce6 molecules tended to assemble with each other through various intermolecular forces. The as-prepared HCPT/Ce6 NRs possessed a relatively uniform size of around 165 nm and zeta potential of about -29 mV, together with good stability in aqueous solution and freeze-dried state. In addition, both the extra- and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation capacity of the NRs under laser irradiation was significantly enhanced compared with Ce6 injections. Moreover, the dual-functional HCPT/Ce6 NRs exhibited a substantial in vitro/in vivo synergistic antitumor efficacy under laser irradiation due to the integration of the two therapeutic modalities into one drug delivery system. Besides, no obvious hepatic or renal toxicity was observed in the NRs treatment groups. CONCLUSION Taken together, HCPT/Ce6 NRs demonstrated a powerful efficacy in chemo-photodynamic therapy for breast cancer. Therefore, the carrier-free dual-functional NRs prepared in a facile and effective strategy might give inspiration for the development of combined antitumor therapy.

Abstract
This reactive molecular dynamics study explores the salt concentration dependence of the viscoelastic and mechanical failure properties of a poly(propylene glycol)/LiPF6‐based solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) at a graphitic carbon electrode interface. To account for the finite‐size effect of interface‐confined SPE films, the properties of two distinct film thicknesses are compared with the respective bulk properties. Additionally, the effect of uniaxial compression in the interface‐normal direction on free energy profiles of Li‐ion SPE‐desolvation is studied. © 2018 The Authors. Abstract
Studies on the adsorption of biopolymers onto halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) in water were conducted. Three polymers with different charges-anionic (pectin), neutral (hydroxypropyl cellulose), and cationic (chitosan)-were chosen. The thermodynamic parameters for the adsorption of polymers onto the HNT surface were determined by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). The experimental data were interpreted based on a Langmuir adsorption model. The standard variations in free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of the process were obtained and discussed. Turbidimetry was used to evaluate the stability of functionalized nanoparticles in water. The ζ-potential clarified the surface charge properties of functionalized nanotubes upon polymer adsorption. The interaction of modified nanotubes with polymers led to the formation of a colloidal system with tunable stability and surface properties, which offers different perspectives on new applications of these dispersions, such as carriers for substances to be released in response to external stimuli.

Abstract
Bacteria reside within biofilms at the infection site, making them extremely difficult to eradicate with conventional wound care products. Bacteria use quorum sensing (QS) systems to regulate biofilm formation, and QS inhibitors (QSIs) have been proposed as promising antibiofilm agents. Despite this, few antimicrobial therapies that interfere with QS exist. Nontoxic hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin-functionalized cellulose gauzes releasing a burst of the antibiotic vancomycin and the QSI hamamelitannin are developed, followed by a sustained release of both. The gauzes affect QS and biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus in an in vitro model of chronic wound infection and can be considered as candidates to be used to prevent wound infection as well as treat infected wounds.

Abstract
Multicavity halloysite nanotube materials were employed as simultaneous carriers for two different natural drugs, silibinin and quercetin, at 6.1% and 2.2% drug loadings, respectively. The materials were obtained by grafting functionalized amphiphilic cyclodextrin onto the HNT external surface. The new materials were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM, thermogravimetry, turbidimetry, dynamic light scattering and ζ-potential techniques. The interaction of the two molecules with the carrier was studied by HPLC measurements and fluorescence spectroscopy, respectively. The release of the drugs from HNT-amphiphilic cyclodextrin, at two different pH values, was also investigated by means of UV-vis spectroscopy. Biological assays showed that the new complex exhibits anti-proliferative activity against human anaplastic thyroid cancer cell lines 8505C. Furthermore, fluorescence microscopy was used to evaluate whether the carrier was uptaken into 8505C thyroid cancer cell lines. The successful results revealed that the synthesized multicavity system is a material of suitable size to transport drugs into living cells.
