Abstract
Abstract
Transition metal complexes (TMCs) with strong and long-lived excited state absorption (ESA) usually exhibit high-performance optical power limiting (OPL) response. Several techniques, such as transmission vs. incident fluence curves and Z-scan have been widely used to assess the OPL performance of typical TMCs. The OPL performance of TMCs is highly molecular structure-dependent. Special emphasis is placed on the structure-OPL response relationships of Pt(II), Ir(III), Ru(II), and other metal complexes. This review concludes with perspectives on the current status of OPL field, as well as opportunities that lie just beyond its frontier.

Abstract
New mononuclear and dinuclear Ru(II) coordination compounds with the 2,7-bisbenzoimidazolyl-naphthyridine ligand have been synthesized and characterized by UV-vis, NMR, and MALDI-TOF. The molecular structures for Ru(II) compounds were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. With the expansion of ligand π-conjugation and the increase in the complexed Ru number, the maximum emission wavelength red-shifted from 696 to 786 nm. The binding mode between complexes and DNA was predicted by molecular docking, which is intercalations and π-π stacking interactions with the surrounding bases. The intercalation mode of DNA binding was then determined by DNA titration and ethidium bromide (EB) displacement experiments. The antigrowth effects of complexes RuY, RuY1, and RuY2 were tested in HaCat (normal cells), HeLa (cervical cancer), A549 (lung cancer), and A549/DDP (cisplatin-resistant lung cancer) through the MTT assay. The dinuclear complex RuY2 was superior to mononuclear complexes and cisplatin in the cisplatin-resistant cell line. Confocal imaging proved that the subcellular localization of Ru(II) complexes was mitochondria; moreover, apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. All three complexes showed a dose-dependent manner in all four cell lines. All Ru(II) complexes were found to have reactive oxygen species (ROS). The finding indicated that these Ru(II) complexes caused cell death by both DNA disruption and ROS. This study helps to explore the potential of the polynuclear Ru(II) complexes for the combination of NIR imaging and Pt-resistant cancer therapy.

Abstract
The present environmental crisis prompts the search for renewable energy sources such as solar-driven production of hydrogen from water. Herein, we report an efficient hybrid photocatalyst for water oxidation, consisting of a ruthenium polypyridyl complex covalently grafted on core/shell Fe@FeOx nanoparticles via a phosphonic acid group. The photoelectrochemical measurements were performed under 1 sun illumination in 1 M KOH. The photocurrent density of this hybrid photoanode reached 20 μA/cm2 (applied potential of +1.0 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode), corresponding to a turnover frequency of 0.02 s-1. This performance represents a 9-fold enhancement of that achieved with a mixture of Fe@FeOx nanoparticles and a linker-free ruthenium polypyridyl photosensitizer. This increase in performance could be attributed to a more efficient electron transfer between the ruthenium photosensitizer and the Fe@FeOx catalyst as a consequence of the covalent link between these two species through the phosphonate pendant group.

Abstract
We use the two-photon excited fluorescence method to determine the two-photon absorption (2PA) cross sections of three series of (fluorenyl benzothiazole) gold(I) complexes in the visible wavelength range from 570 to 700 nm. We compare the effect of ancillary ligand substitutions on the 2PA magnitudes and find that the ancillary ligand does not drastically affect either the magnitude or the shape of 2PA. Even so, moderate 2PA cross sections were measured that ranged from 10 to 1000 s of GM (Göppert-Mayer, =10-50cm4s/photon), making these types of complexes nonlinear optical materials for two-photon absorbing applications.

Abstract
Photodynamic therapy (PDT), a therapeutic mode involving light triggering, has been recognized as an attractive oncotherapy treatment. However, nonnegligible challenges remain for its further clinical use, including finite tumor suppression, poor tumor targeting, and limited therapeutic depth. The photosensitizer (PS), being the most important element of PDT, plays a decisive role in PDT treatment. This review summarizes recent progress made in the development of PSs for overcoming the above challenges. This progress has included PSs developed to display enhanced tolerance of the tumor microenvironment, improved tumor-specific selectivity, and feasibility of use in deep tissue. Based on their molecular photophysical properties and design directions, the PSs are classified by parent structures, which are discussed in detail from the molecular design to application. Finally, a brief summary of current strategies for designing PSs and future perspectives are also presented. We expect the information provided in this review to spur the further design of PSs and the clinical development of PDT-mediated cancer treatments.

Abstract
A series of homo- and heteroleptic Ru(ii) complexes [Ru(phen)3-n(phen-X)n](PF6)2 (n = 0-3, X = CN, epoxy, H, NH2) were prepared and characterized. The influence of electron-withdrawing or electron-releasing substituents of the 1,10-phenanthroline ligands on the photo-physical properties was evaluated. It reveals fundamental interests in the fine tuning of redox potentials and photo-physical characteristics, depending both on the nature of the substitution of the ligand, and on the symmetry of the related homo- or heteroleptic complex. These complexes exhibit linear absorption and two-photon absorption (2PA) cross-sections over a broad range of wavelength (700-900 nm) due to absorption in the intra-ligand charge transfer (ILCT) and the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) bands. These 2PA properties were more particularly investigated in the 700-1000 spectral range for a family of complexes bearing electro-donating ligands (phen-NH2).

Abstract
Nonlinear molecular interactions with optical fields produce intriguing optical phenomena and applications ranging from color generation to biomedical imaging and sensing. The nonlinear cross-section of dielectric materials is low and therefore for effective utilisation, the optical fields need to be amplified. Here, we demonstrate that two-photon absorption can be enhanced by 108 inside individual plasmonic nanocavities containing emitters sandwiched between a gold nanoparticle and a gold film. This enhancement results from the high field strengths confined in the nanogap, thus enhancing nonlinear interactions with the emitters. We further investigate the parameters that determine the enhancement including the cavity spectral position and excitation wavelength. Moreover, the Purcell effect drastically reduces the emission lifetime from 520 ns to <200 ps, turning inefficient phosphorescent emitters into an ultrafast light source. Our results provide an understanding of enhanced two-photon-excited emission, allowing for optimization of efficient nonlinear light-matter interactions at the nanoscale.

Abstract
A simple supramolecular crosslinked gel is reported with a photosensitive ruthenium bipyridine complex functioning as a crosslinker and poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) as a macromolecular ligand. Irradiation of the organogels in H2 O/MeOH with visible and NIR light (in a multiphoton process) leads to cleavage of pyridine moieties from the ruthenium complex breaking the cross-links and causing degelation and hence solubilization of the P4VP chains. Real-time (RT) photorheology experiments of thin films showed a rapid degelation in several seconds, whereas larger bulk samples could also be photocleaved. Furthermore, the gels could be reformed or healed by simple heating of the system and restoration of the metal-ligand crosslinks. The relatively simple dynamic system with a high sensitivity towards light in the visible and NIR region make them interesting positive photoresists for nano/micropatterning applications, as was demonstrated by writing, erasing, and rewriting of the gels by single- and multiphoton lithography.

Abstract
Rapid and covalent layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly is of significance for practical applications because of superior chemical and mechanical stability. The electrochemical LbL assembly via an accelerating trigger can be automated and programmable in response to electrical signals to in situ fabricate covalently layered thin films with chemical and mechanical stability. In this paper, electroreductive coupling layer-by-layer assembly is introduced as both covalent and rapid methodology for preparing layered thin films. This assembly is triggered by C-C coupling of peripheral alkynyls, which have own absorption below 300 nm and can transform to optical and electrical inert double/single or triple/single alternative bonding formations significantly without optical or electric alternations of desirable photoelectric building blocks, superior to other linkers among covalent LbL assemblies. Not limited to fabrication of optical thin films, this assembly is readily available for oxygen sensitive substrates or materials and also a powerful addition to electrooxidative coupling LbL assembly for developing the economically dynamoelectric LbL machines without moving or changing experimental gears.

Abstract
Five heteroleptic tris-diimine ruthenium(II) complexes [RuL(N^N)2](PF6)2 (where L is 3,8-di(benzothiazolylfluorenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline and N^N is 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) (1), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) (2), 1,4,8,9-tetraazatriphenylene (tatp) (3), dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz) (4), or benzo[i]dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppn) (5), respectively) were synthesized. The influence of π-conjugation of the ancillary ligands (N^N) on the photophysical properties of the complexes was investigated by spectroscopic methods and simulated by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT. Their ground-state absorption spectra were characterized by intense absorption bands below 350 nm (ligand L localized 1π,π* transitions) and a featureless band centered at ∼410 nm (intraligand charge transfer (1ILCT)/1π,π* transitions with minor contribution from metal-to-ligand charge transfer (1MLCT) transition). For complexes 4 and 5 with dppz and dppn ligands, respectively, broad but very weak absorption (ε < 800 M-1 cm-1) was present from 600 to 850 nm, likely emanating from the spin-forbidden transitions to the triplet excited states. All five complexes showed red-orange phosphorescence at room temperature in CH2Cl2 solution with decreased lifetimes and emission quantum yields, as the π-conjugation of the ancillary ligands increased. Transient absorption (TA) profiles were probed in acetonitrile solutions at room temperature for all of the complexes. Except for complex 5 (which showed dppn-localized 3π,π* absorption with a long lifetime of 41.2 μs), complexes 1-4 displayed similar TA spectral features but with much shorter triplet lifetimes (1-2 μs). Reverse saturable absorption (RSA) was demonstrated for the complexes at 532 nm using 4.1 ns laser pulses, and the strength of RSA decreased in the order: 2 ≥ 1 ≈ 5 > 3 > 4. Complex 5 is particularly attractive as a broadband reverse saturable absorber due to its wide optical window (430-850 nm) and long-lived triplet lifetime in addition to its strong RSA at 532 nm. Complexes 1-5 were also probed as photosensitizing agents for in vitro photodynamic therapy (PDT). Most of them showed a PDT effect, and 5 emerged as the most potent complex with red light (EC50 = 10 μM) and was highly photoselective for melanoma cells (selectivity factor, SF = 13). Complexes 1-5 were readily taken up by cells and tracked by their intracellular luminescence before and after a light treatment. Diagnostic intracellular luminescence increased with increased π-conjugation of the ancillary N^N ligands despite diminishing cell-free phosphorescence in that order. All of the complexes penetrated the nucleus and caused DNA condensation in cell-free conditions in a concentration-dependent manner, which was not influenced by the identity of N^N ligands. Although the mechanism for photobiological activity was not established, complexes 1-5 were shown to exhibit potential as theranostic agents. Together the RSA and PDT studies indicate that developing new agents with long intrinsic triplet lifetimes, high yields for triplet formation, and broad ground-state absorption to near-infrared (NIR) in tandem is a viable approach to identifying promising agents for these applications.

Abstract
The control of luminous radiation has extremely important implications for modern and future technologies as well as in medicine. In this Review, we detail chemical structures and their relevant photophysical features for various groups of materials, including organic dyes such as metalloporphyrins and metallophthalocyanines (and derivatives), other common organic materials, mixed metal complexes and clusters, fullerenes, dendrimeric nanocomposites, polymeric materials (organic and/or inorganic), inorganic semiconductors, and other nanoscopic materials, utilized or potentially useful for the realization of devices able to filter in a smart way an external radiation. The concept of smart is referred to the characteristic of those materials that are capable to filter the radiation in a dynamic way without the need of an ancillary system for the activation of the required transmission change. In particular, this Review gives emphasis to the nonlinear optical properties of photoactive materials for the function of optical power limiting. All known mechanisms of optical limiting have been analyzed and discussed for the different types of materials.

Abstract
We present a new approach to investigate how the photodynamics of an octahedral ruthenium(II) complex activated through two-photon absorption (TPA) differ from the equivalent complex activated through one-photon absorption (OPA). We photoactivated a Ru(II) polypyridyl complex containing bioactive monodentate ligands in the photodynamic therapy window (620-1000 nm) by using TPA and used transient UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy to elucidate its reaction pathways. Density functional calculations allowed us to identify the nature of the initially populated states and kinetic analysis recovers a photoactivation lifetime of approximately 100 ps. The dynamics displayed following TPA or OPA are identical, showing that TPA prodrug design may use knowledge gathered from the more numerous and easily conducted OPA studies.

Abstract
New trinuclear RuPt2 and heptanuclear RuPt6 complex salts are prepared by attaching Pt(II) 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine (tpy) moieties to Ru(II) 4,4':2',2":4",4"'-quaterpyridine (qpy) complexes. Characterization includes single crystal X-ray structures for both polymetallic species. The visible absorption bands are primarily due to Ru(II) → qpy metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) transitions, according to time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. These spectra change only slightly on Pt coordination, while the orange-red emission from the complexes shows corresponding small red-shifts, accompanied by decreases in intensity. Cubic molecular nonlinear optical behavior has been assessed by using Z-scan measurements. These reveal relatively high two-photon absorption (2PA) cross sections σ2, with maximal values of 301 GM at 834 nm (RuPt2) and 523 GM at 850 nm (RuPt6) when dissolved in methanol or acetone, respectively. Attaching Pt(II)(tpy) moieties triples or quadruples the 2PA activities when compared with the Ru(II)-based cores.

Abstract
The 4'-(2-fluorenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (FT) ligand and its cis(Cl,Cl)- and trans(Cl,Cl)-[Ru(II)(FT)Cl2(NO)](PF6) complexes have been synthesized. Both isomers were separated by HPLC and fully characterized by (1)H and (13)C NMR. The X-ray diffraction crystal structures were solved for FT (Pna21 space group, a = 34.960(4), b = 5.9306(7), c = 9.5911(10) Å), and trans(Cl,Cl)-[Ru(II)(FT)Cl2(NO)](PF6)·MeOH (P1[combining macron] space group, a = 10.3340(5), b = 13.0961(6), c = 13.2279(6) Å, α = 72.680(2), β = 70.488(2), γ = 67.090(2)°). Photo-release of NO˙ radicals occurs under irradiation at 405 nm, with a quantum yield of 0.31 and 0.10 for cis(Cl,Cl)-[Ru(II)(FT)Cl2(NO)](PF6) and trans(Cl,Cl)-[Ru(II)(FT)Cl2(NO)](PF6), respectively. This significant difference is likely due to the trans effect of Cl(-), which favors the photo-release. UV-visible spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry indicate the formation of ruthenium(iii) species as photoproducts. A density functional theory (DFT) analysis provides a rationale for the understanding of the photo-physical properties, and allows relating the weakening of the Ru-NO bond, and finally the photo-dissociation, to HOMO → LUMO excitations.

Abstract
The nonlinear optical properties of a series of pyrrolic compounds consisting of BODIPY and aza-BODIPY systems are investigated using 532 nm nanosecond laser and the Z-scan technique. Results show that 3,5-distyryl extension of BODIPY to the red shifted MeO2BODIPY dye has a dramatic impact on its nonlinear absorption properties changing it from a saturable absorber to an efficient reverse saturable absorbing material with a nonlinear absorption coefficient of 4.64 × 10-10 m/W. When plotted on a concentration scale per mole of dye in solution MeO2BODIPY far outperforms the recognized zinc(II) phthalocyanine dye and is comparable to that of zinc(II) tetraphenylporphyrin.

Abstract
This short review highlights some of the exciting new experimental and theoretical developments in the field of photoactivatable metal complexes and their applications in biotechnology and medicine. The examples chosen are based on some of the presentations at the Royal Society Discussion Meeting in June 2012, many of which are featured in more detail in other articles in this issue. This is a young field. Even the photochemistry of well-known systems such as metal-carbonyl complexes is still being elucidated. Striking are the recent developments in theory and computation (e.g. time-dependent density functional theory) and in ultrafast-pulsed radiation techniques which allow photochemical reactions to be followed and their mechanisms to be revealed on picosecond/nanosecond time scales. Not only do some metal complexes (e.g. those of Ru and Ir) possess favourable emission properties which allow functional imaging of cells and tissues (e.g. DNA interactions), but metal complexes can also provide spatially controlled photorelease of bioactive small molecules (e.g. CO and NO)--a novel strategy for site-directed therapy. This extends to cancer therapy, where metal-based precursors offer the prospect of generating excited-state drugs with new mechanisms of action that complement and augment those of current organic photosensitizers.

Impact of the synergistic collaboration of oligothiophene bridges and ruthenium complexes on the optical properties of dumbbell-shaped compounds. Chemistry 2012. Abstract
The linear and non-linear optical properties of a family of dumbbell-shaped dinuclear complexes, in which an oligothiophene chain with various numbers of rings (1, 3, and 6) acts as a bridge between two homoleptic tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) complexes, have been fully investigated by using a range of spectroscopic techniques (absorption and luminescence, transient absorption, Raman, and non-linear absorption), together with density functional theory calculations. Our results shed light on the impact of the synergistic collaboration between the electronic structures of the two chemical moieties on the optical properties of these materials. Experiments on the linear optical properties of these compounds indicated that the length of the oligothiophene bridge was critical for luminescent behavior. Indeed, no emission was detected for compounds with long oligothiophene bridges (compounds 3 and 4, with 3 and 6 thiophene rings, respectively), owing to the presence of the (3)π-π* state of the conjugated bridge below the (3)MLCT-emitting states of the end-capping Ru(II) complexes. In contrast, the compound with the shortest bridge (2, one thiophene ring) shows excellent photophysical features. Non-linear optical experiments showed that the investigated compounds were strong non-linear absorbers in wide energy ranges. Indeed, their non-linear absorption was augmented upon increasing the length of the oligothiophene bridge. In particular, the compound with the longest oligothiophene bridge not only showed strong two-photon absorption (TPA) but also noteworthy three-photon-absorption behavior, with a cross-section value of 4×10(-78) cm(6) s(2) at 1450 nm. This characteristic was complemented by the strong excited-state absorption (ESA) that was observed for compounds 3 and 4. As a matter of fact, the overlap between the non-linear absorption and ESA establishes compounds 3 and 4 as good candidates for optical-power-limiting applications.
