Self-Assembly of Precision Noble Metal Nanoclusters: Hierarchical Structural Complexity, Colloidal Superstructures, and Applications

Ligand protected noble metal nanoparticles are excellent building blocks for colloidal self-assembly. Metal nanoparticle self-assembly offers routes for a wide range of multifunctional nanomaterials with enhanced optoelectronic properties. The emergence of atomically precise monolayer thiol-protected noble metal nanoclusters has overcome numerous challenges such as uncontrolled aggregation, polydispersity, and directionalities faced in plasmonic nanoparticle self-assemblies. Because of their well-defined molecular compositions, enhanced stability, and diverse surface functionalities, nanoclusters offer an excellent platform for developing colloidal superstructures via the self-assembly driven by surface ligands and metal cores. More importantly, recent reports have also revealed the hierarchical structural complexity of several nanoclusters. In this review, the formulation and periodic self-assembly of different noble metal nanoclusters are focused upon. Further, self-assembly induced amplification of physicochemical properties, and their potential applications in molecular recognition, sensing, gas storage, device fabrication, bioimaging, therapeutics, and catalysis are discussed. The topics covered in this review are extensively associated with state-of-the-art achievements in the field of precision noble metal nanoclusters.

Lilypad aggregation: localised self-assembly and metal sequestration at a liquid-vapour interface

Spatially resolved soft materials, such as vesicles and microgels, have shown promise as selective adsorbents and microscale reaction vessels. However, spatiotemporal control of aggregation can be difficult to achieve. In this study, nickel(ii) chloride and a dipyridyl oligo(urea) ligand were combined in a vapour-diffusion setup to produce a localised spheroidal aggregate at the liquid-vapour interface. This aggregate forms via the self-assembly and fusion of monodisperse colloids and grows until its weight is no longer counterbalanced by surface tension. A simple physical model reveals that this process, termed lilypad aggregation, is possible only for surface energies that favour neither bulk aggregation nor the growth of an interfacial film. These surface energies dictate the final size and shape of the aggregate and may be estimated through visual monitoring of its changing morphology. Lilypad aggregates sequester metal from the surrounding sol and can be collected manually from the surface of the liquid.

Nanocluster superstructures or nanoparticles? The self-consuming scaffold decides

We show that using the same reaction procedure, by hindering or allowing the formation of a reaction intermediate, the Ag+dodecanethiolate polymeric complex, it is possible to selectively obtain Ag dodecanethiolate nanoparticles or Ag dodecanethiolate nanoclusters in the size range 4-2 nm. Moreover, the Ag dodecanethiolate nanoclusters display a lamellar superstructure templated from the precursor Ag+dodecanethiolate polymeric complex. A plausible formation mechanism is illustrated where, starting from the precursor and scaffold lamellar Ag+ thiolate polymeric complex, first the nanocluster Agn0 core is formed by reduction of isoplanar Ag+ ions, followed by Ag+ thiolate units that build protection, the nanocluster shell, around the core. The nanoclusters are characterized by elemental analyses, XRD, ATR-FTIR, XPS, XAS, MALDI, ESI, UV-Vis and fluorescence measurements. The luminescent Ag15(dodecanethiolate)11·2H2O nanocluster is achieved in good yield after 4 hours of reaction whereas after 2 hours, the luminescent Ag35(dodecanethiolate)16 is isolated. Both Ag nanoclusters present emission bands in the range 330-450 nm, the shifting depending on the excitation wavelength. This phenomenon is attributed to a possible dipolar state causing distribution in energies due to variability of dipole-dipole interactions. Moreover, both nanoclusters further present a NIR emission at about 700 nm independent from the excitation wavelength. Thanks to their optical and structural properties, the synthesized nanoclusters, perfect molecular/nanoparticle hybrids, have great potentiality for new applications in nanotechnologies.

Synthesis of iron oxide rods coated with polymer brushes and control of their assembly in thin films

We investigated the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) using monodisperse rod-type particles of iron oxide, β-FeOOH. The slow hydrolysis of iron(III) chloride yielded monodisperse β-FeOOH rods with an average length-to-width ratio, L/W, of 6 (L = 210 nm and W = 35 nm on average). The surfaces of the β-FeOOH rods were modified with a triethoxysilane derivative as an ATRP-initiating site, namely, (2-bromo-2-methyl)propionyloxypropyl triethoxysilane. The SI-ATRP of MMA, mediated by a copper complex, was performed using the initiator-coated β-FeOOH rods in the presence of a "sacrificial" free initiator. Well-defined poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brushes with molecular weights of up to 700,000 could be grafted on the β-FeOOH rods with a surface density as high as 0.3 chains/nm(2). The resultant polymer-brush-afforded hybrid rods exhibited high dispersibility in various solvents for PMMA without forming aggregates. Thin films were prepared by dip-coating from a suspension of the hybrid rods, and the rods were oriented in a specific direction in the films. The arrangement of the rods could be controlled by varying the chain length of the polymer brush and the withdrawal speed during the dip-coating process.

Measurement of the index of refraction of μm crystals by a confocal laser microscope--potential application for the refractive index mapping of μm scale

A conventional laser microscope can be used to derive the index of refractivity by the ratio of geometrical height of the transparent platelet to the apparent height of the normal incident light for very small crystals in the wide size range. We demonstrate that the simple method is effective for the samples from 100 μm to 16 μm in size using alkali halide crystals as a model system. The method is also applied for the surface fractured micro-crystals and an inclined crystal with microscopic size regime. Furthermore, we present two-dimensional refractive index mapping as well as two-dimensional height profile for the mixture of three alkali halides, KCl, KI, and NaCl, all are μm in size.

Microfluidic-induced growth and shape-up of three-dimensional extended arrays of densely packed nanoparticles

We use evaporation within a microfluidic device to extract the solvent of a (possibly very dilute) dispersion of nanoparticles and concentrate the dispersion until a solid made of densely packed nanoparticles grows and totally invades the microfluidic geometry. The growth process can be rationalized as an interplay between evaporation-induced flow and kinetic and thermodynamic coefficients which are system-dependent; this yields limitations to the growth process illustrated here on two main cases: evaporation- and transport-limited growth. Importantly, we also quantify how colloidal stability may hinder the growth and show that care must be taken as to the composition of the initial dispersion, especially regarding traces of ionic species that can destabilize the suspension upon concentration. We define a stability chart, which, when fulfilled, permits us to grow and shape-up solids, including superlattices and extended and thick arrays of nanoparticles made of unary and binary dispersions, composites, and heterojunctions between distinct types of nanoparticles. In all cases, the geometry of the final solid is imparted by that of the microfluidic device.
