Abstract
A comprehensive study on the synthesis and characterization of NHC-ligated nickel(II) cyanoborates (CBs) is presented (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene). Nickel(II) cyanoborates Ni[BH2(CN)2]2·H2O (Ib·H2O), Ni[BH(CN)3]2·0.5H2O (Ic·0.5H2O), Ni[B(CN)4]2·H2O (Id·H2O) were reacted with selected NHCs of different steric size. The reaction of the nickel cyanoborates with small to medium-sized NHCs Me2ImMe and iPr2Im (R2Im = 1,3-di-organyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene; R2ImMe = 1,3-di-organyl-4,5-dimethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene) afforded cyanoborate salts containing the rare homoleptic fourfold NHC-ligated nickel(II) cations [Ni(NHC)4]2+ (NHC = Me2ImMe (1c-d), iPr2Im (2c-d)) and cyanoborate counter-anions. Bulkier NHCs such as Mes2Im and Dipp2Im afforded complexes trans-[Ni(NHC)2(CB)2] (trans-4b, trans-5c). For the combination of the cyanoborate anion [BH2(CN)2]- and iPr2ImMe the salt of the tris-NHC complex [Ni(iPr2ImMe)3(NC-BH2CN)][BH2(CN)2] (3b) was isolated. Salt metathesis of NHC-ligated nickel(II) halides (Ni(NHC)2X2) (X = Cl, Br) with silver(I) and alkali metal cyanoborates were used to synthesize mono- and disubstituted coordination compounds of the type cis- or trans-[Ni(NHC)2(CB)X] (cis-10c, cis-11c, trans-12b) and cis- or trans-[Ni(NHC)2(CB)2] (cis-13b, cis-14a-c, trans-14a-b, trans-15b, trans-5b). Further investigations reveal that NHC-ligated cyanoborate complexes can act as building blocks for coordination polymers, as observed for structurally characterized 1∞{trans-[Ni(Mes2Im)2(μ2-[NC-BH2-CN])2]·2Ag(μ2-[BH2(CN)2])} (trans-5b·Ag). This study demonstrates the diverse character of cyanoborates in coordination chemistry as both, non-coordinating counter-anions, and weakly to medium coordinating anions forming novel transition metal complexes and salts. It provides evidence that a proper choice of cyanoborate and a proper choice of co-ligand can lead to a rich coordination chemistry of cyanoborate anions.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have become one of the most widely studied class of ligands in molecular chemistry and have found applications in fields as varied as catalysis, the stabilization of reactive molecular fragments, and biochemistry. More recently, NHCs have found applications in materials chemistry and have allowed for the functionalization of surfaces, polymers, nanoparticles, and discrete, well-defined clusters. In this review, we provide an in-depth look at recent advances in the use of NHCs for the development of functional materials.

Abstract
The emergence of N-heterocyclic carbenes as ligands across the Periodic Table had an impact on various aspects of the coordination, organometallic, and catalytic chemistry of the 3d metals, including Cu, Ni, and Co, both from the fundamental viewpoint but also in applications, including catalysis, photophysics, bioorganometallic chemistry, materials, etc. In this review, the emergence, development, and state of the art in these three areas are described in detail.

Abstract
A series of P-NHC-type hybrid ligands containing both PR2 and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) donors on meta-bis-substituted phenylene backbones, L(Cy), L(tBu) and L(Ph) (R = Cy, tBu, Ph, respectively), was accessed through a modular synthesis from a common precursor, and their coordination chemistry with coinage metals was explored and compared. Metallation of L(Ph)·n(HBr) (n = 1, 2) with Ag2O gave the pseudo-cubane [Ag4Br4(L(Ph))2], isostructural to [Ag4Br4(L(R))2] (R = Cy, tBu) (T. Simler, P. Braunstein and A. A. Danopoulos, Angew. Chem., Int. Ed., 2015, 54, 13691), whereas metallation of ·HBF4 (R = Ph, tBu) led to the dinuclear complexes [Ag2(L(R))2](BF4)2 which, in the solid state, feature heteroleptic Ag centres and a 'head-to-tail' (HT) arrangement of the bridging ligands. In solution, interconversion with the homoleptic 'head-to-head' (HH) isomers is facilitated by ligand fluxionality. 'Head-to-tail' [Cu2Br2(L(R))2] (R = Cy, tBu) dinuclear complexes were obtained from L(R)·HBr and [Cu5(Mes)5], Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl, which also feature bridging ligands and heteroleptic Cu centres. Although the various ligands L(R)l ed to structurally analogous complexes for R = Cy, tBu and Ph, the rates of dynamic processes occurring in solution are dependent on R, with faster rates for R = Ph. Transmetallation of both NHC and P donor groups from [Ag4Br4(L(tBu))2] to AuI by reaction with [AuCl(THT)] (THT = tetrahydrothiophene) led to L(tBu) transfer and to the dinuclear complex [Au2Cl2L(tBu)] with one L(tBu) ligand bridging the two Au centres. Except for the silver pseudo-cubanes, all other complexes do not exhibit metallophilic interactions.

Abstract
Translation of new 18F-fluorination reactions to produce radiotracers for human positron emission tomography (PET) imaging is rare because the chemistry must have useful scope and the process for 18F-labeled tracer production must be robust and simple to execute. The application of transition metal mediators has enabled impactful 18F-fluorination methods, but to date none of these reactions have been applied to produce a human-injectable PET tracer. In this article we present chemistry and process innovations that culminate in the first production from [18F]fluoride of human doses of [18F]5-fluorouracil, a PET tracer for cancer imaging in humans. The first preparation of nickel σ-aryl complexes by transmetalation from arylboronic acids or esters was developed and enabled the synthesis of the [18F]5-fluorouracil precursor. Routine production of >10 mCi doses of [18F]5-fluorouracil was accomplished with a new instrument for azeotrope-free [18F]fluoride concentration in a process that leverages the tolerance of water in nickel-mediated 18F-fluorination.

Abstract
The flexibly bridged macrocyclic tetra-NHC ligand 4 reacts with d8 transition metal ions to yield mononuclear complexes of type [M(4)](PF6)2 (M = Ni, Pd, Pt) while reaction with Ag+ yields the tetranuclear sandwich-type octacarbene complex [Ag4(4)2](PF6)4.

Abstract
New silver(i) complexes bearing alcohol- or ether-functionalized NHCs were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction. Their NHC transmetallation ability was assessed and gave rise to a Ni(ii) bis(NHC) complex in the case of the ether-functionalisation.

Abstract
A well-defined N-heterocyclic carbene–palladium(II)-1-methylimidazole [NHC-Pd(II)-Im] complex 1 was found to be an effective catalyst for the Mizoroki–Heck reaction of a variety of aryl chlorides with styrenes. Both activated and deactivated aryl chlorides work well to give the corresponding coupling products in good to excellent yields by using tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) as the ionic liquid.
