On-nanoparticle monolayers as a solute-specific, solvent-like phase

In addition to modifying surface properties, self-assembled monolayers, SAMs, on nanoparticles can selectively incorporate small molecules from the surrounding solution. This selectivity has been used in the design of substrate-specific catalytic systems but its degree has not been quantified. This work uses catalytic centers embedded in on-nanoparticle hydrophobic SAMs to monitor and quantify the partitioning of molecules between the bulk solvent and these monolayers. A combination of experiments and theory allows us to relate the logarithm of the incorporation-into-SAM constant to the "bulk" log P values, characterizing the incoming substrates. These results are in line with classic, semi-empirical linear free energy relationships between partitioning solvent systems; in this way, they substantiate the view of nanoscopic on-particle SAMs acting akin to a bulk solvent phase.

Bioorthogonal strategies for site-directed decoration of biomaterials with therapeutic proteins

Emerging strategies targeting site-specific protein modifications allow for unprecedented selectivity, fast kinetics and mild reaction conditions with high yield. These advances open exciting novel possibilities for the effective bioorthogonal decoration of biomaterials with therapeutic proteins. Site-specificity is particularly important to the therapeutics' end and translated by targeting specific functional groups or introducing new functional groups into the therapeutic at predefined positions. Biomimetic strategies are designed for modification of therapeutics emulating enzymatic strategies found in Nature. These strategies are suitable for a diverse range of applications - not only for protein-polymer conjugation, particle decoration and surface immobilization, but also for the decoration of complex biomaterials and the synthesis of bioresponsive drug delivery systems. This article reviews latest chemical and enzymatic strategies for the biorthogonal decoration of biomaterials with therapeutic proteins and inter-positioned linker structures. Finally, the numerous reports at the interface of biomaterials, linkers, and therapeutic protein decoration are integrated into practical advice for design considerations intended to support the selection of productive ligation strategies.

A controllable transformation in copper valence states and its applications

The present study revealed a surprising valence transformation of copper (Cu) in the sintering process of mixtures of copper chloride dihydrate (CuCl(2)·2H(2)O) with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) in ambient atmosphere. Such a transformation in Cu valence states can be modulated by changing the initial molar ratio (IMR) of CuCl(2)·2H(2)O to β-CD in the mixtures. Firstly, as the value of IMR decreased, the content of cuprous chloride (CuCl) decreased, while the content of cupric oxide (CuO) increased gradually. That is to say, there is an unambiguous IMR-dependence of the contents of CuCl and CuO formed. However, such a controllable valence transformation from Cu(II) to Cu(I) to Cu(II) did not happen in nitrogen atmosphere. Secondly, the in situ composite of CuCl and CuO produced a highly ordered structure of self-assembled nanowires, intertwined, with a diameter of 30 to 50 nm. Furthermore, electronic structural analysis provided direct evidence that the Cu-Cl and Cu-O bonds in this composite material were simultaneously impaired by self-assembled growth. Finally, we noticed that the photoluminescence property of CuCl was regulated through the formation of composites with CuO. In addition, this in situ composite synthesis technique was used to modify the magnetic property of CuO. Furthermore, the anomalous ferromagnetic behaviour of the CuO nanocrystal was observed and explained. In short, this work not only demonstrates a flexible and easily controllable valence transformation of Cu, but also provides a novel approach for constructing inorganic nanocomposite materials. We believe that the implications of these findings are important and make significant contributions to the development of inorganic chemistry and material science.
