Preparation and physical properties of early-late heterobimetallic compounds featuring Ir-M bonds (M = Ti, Zr, Hf)

H2 Evolution at a Reduced Hybrid Polyoxometalate and Its Vanadium-Oxo Derivative Used as Molecular Models for Reducible Metal Oxides

We herein report our investigations on the use of a tris-silanol-decorated polyoxotungstate, [SbW₉O₃₃(tBuSiOH)₃]^3-, as a molecular support model to describe the coordination of an isolated vanadium atom at metal oxides, focusing on the reactivity of the reduced derivatives in the presence of protons. Accumulation of electrons and protons at an active site is a main feature associated with heterogeneous catalysts able to conduct the (oxy)dehydrogenation of alkanes or alcohols. Our results indicate that two-electron reduced derivatives release H₂ upon protonation, a reaction that probably takes place at the polyoxotungstic framework rather than at the vanadium center.

A versatile strategy for the formation of hydride-bridged actinide-iridium multimetallics

Reaction of the potassium pentamethylcyclopentadienyl iridate tris-hydride K[IrCp*H₃] with UCl₄ and ThCl₄(DME)₂ led to the complete replacement of the halide ligands to generate multimetallic complexes U{(μ-H)₃IrCp*}₄ (1) and Th{[(μ-H₂)(H)IrCp*]₂[(μ-H)₃IrCp*]₂} (2), respectively. These analogues feature a significant discrepancy in hydride bonding modes; 1 contains twelve bridging hydrides while 2 contains ten bridging hydrides and two terminal, Ir-bound hydrides. Use of a U(iii) starting material, UI₃(1,4-dioxane)_1.5, resulted in the octanuclear complex {U[(μ²-H₃)IrCp*]₂[(μ³-H₂)IrCp*]}₂ (3). Computational studies indicate significant bonding character between U/Th and Ir in 1 and 2, with f-orbital involvement in the singly-occupied molecular orbitals of the uranium species 1. In addition, these studies attribute the variation in hydride bonding between 1 and 2 to differences in dispersion effects.

Secondary Coordination Sphere Influences the Formation of Fe(III)-O or Fe(III)-OH in Nitrite Reduction: A Synthetic and Computational Study

The reduction of nitrite (NO₂^-) to generate nitric oxide (NO) is a significant area of research due to their roles in the global nitrogen cycle. Here, we describe various modifications of the tris(5-cyclohexyliminopyrrol-2-ylmethyl)amine H₃[N(pi^R)₃] ligand where the steric bulk and acidity of the secondary coordination sphere were explored in the non-heme iron system for nitrite reduction. The cyclohexyl and 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl variants of the ligand were used to probe the mechanism of nitrite reduction. While previously stoichiometric addition of nitrite to the iron(II)-species generated an iron(III)-oxo complex, changing the secondary coordination sphere to mesityl resulted in an iron(III)-hydroxo complex. Subsequent addition of an electron and two protons led to the release of water and regeneration of the starting iron(II) catalyst. This sequence mirrored the proposed mechanism of nitrite reduction in biological systems, where the distal histidine residue shuttles protons to the active site. Computational studies aimed at interrogating the dissimilar behavior of the cyclohexyl and mesityl ligand systems resulting in Fe(III)-oxo and Fe(III)-hydroxo complexes, respectively, shed light on the key role of H-bonds involving the secondary coordination sphere in the relative stability of these species.

Following Nature's Footprint: Mimicking the High-Valent Heme-Oxo Mediated Indole Monooxygenation Reaction Landscape of Heme Enzymes

Pathways for direct conversion of indoles to oxindoles have accumulated considerable interest in recent years due to their significance in the clear comprehension of various pathogenic processes in humans and the multipotent therapeutic value of oxindole pharmacophores. Heme enzymes are predominantly responsible for this conversion in biology and are thought to proceed with a compound-I active oxidant. These heme-enzyme-mediated indole monooxygenation pathways are rapidly emerging therapeutic targets; however, a clear mechanistic understanding is still lacking. Additionally, such knowledge holds promise in the rational design of highly specific indole monooxygenation synthetic protocols that are also cost-effective and environmentally benign. We herein report the first examples of synthetic compound-I and activated compound-II species that can effectively monooxygenate a diverse array of indoles with varied electronic and steric properties to exclusively produce the corresponding 2-oxindole products in good to excellent yields. Rigorous kinetic, thermodynamic, and mechanistic interrogations clearly illustrate an initial rate-limiting epoxidation step that takes place between the heme oxidant and indole substrate, and the resulting indole epoxide intermediate undergoes rearrangement driven by a 2,3-hydride shift on indole ring to ultimately produce 2-oxindole. The complete elucidation of the indole monooxygenation mechanism of these synthetic heme models will help reveal crucial insights into analogous biological systems, directly reinforcing drug design attempts targeting those heme enzymes. Moreover, these bioinspired model compounds are promising candidates for the future development of better synthetic protocols for the selective, efficient, and sustainable generation of 2-oxindole motifs, which are already known for a plethora of pharmacological benefits.

An Isolable Azide Adduct of Titanium(II) Follows Bifurcated Deazotation Pathways to an Imide

AdN₃ (Ad = 1-adamantyl) reacts with the tetrahedral Ti^II complex [(Tp^tBu,Me)TiCl] (Tp^tBu,Me = hydrotris(3-tert-butyl-5-methylpyrazol-1-yl)borate) to generate a mixture of an imide complex, [(Tp^tBu,Me)TiCl(NAd)] (4), and an unusual and kinetically stable azide adduct of the group 4 metal, namely, [(Tp^tBu,Me)TiCl(γ-N₃Ad)] (3). In these conversions, the product distribution is determined by the relative concentration of reactants. In contrast, the azide adduct 3 forms selectively when a masked Ti^II complex (N₂ or AdNC adduct) reacts with AdN₃. Upon heating, 3 extrudes dinitrogen in a unimolecular process proceeding through a titanatriazete intermediate to form the imide complex 4, but the observed thermal stability of the azide adduct (t_1/2 = 61 days at 25 °C) is at odds with the large fraction of imide complex formed directly in reactions between AdN₃ and [(Tp^tBu,Me)TiCl] at room temperature (∼50% imide with a 1:1 stoichiometry). A combination of theoretical and experimental studies identified an additional deazotation pathway, proceeding through a bimetallic complex bridged by a single azide ligand. The electronic origin of this deazotation mechanism lies in the ability of azide adduct 3 to serve as a π-backbonding metallaligand toward free [(Tp^tBu,Me)TiCl]. These findings unveil a new class of azide-to-imide conversions for transition metals, highlighting that the mechanisms underlying this common synthetic methodology may be more complex than conventionally assumed, given the concentration dependence in the conversion of an azide into an imide complex. Lastly, we show how significantly different AdN₃ reacts when treated with [(Tp^tBu,Me)VCl].

Bridging (Thionylimido)metal Complexes

We report the first examples of the thionylimido ligand acting as a μ₂-bridging ligand between two transition-metal centers; using Cp₂Ti(NSO)₂, we describe bi- and tetrametallic systems.

Two-Electron Reduction of a U(VI) Complex with Al(C5Me5)

The reduction of U(VI) to U(IV) is rare, especially in one step, and not observed electrochemically as a one-wave, two-electron couple. Here, we demonstrate that reduction of the uranium(VI) bis(imido) complex, (C₅Me₅)₂U[═N(4-OⁱPrC₆H₄)]₂, is readily accomplished with Al(C₅Me₅), forming the bridging uranium(IV)/aluminum(III) imido complex (C₅Me₅)₂U[μ₂-N(4-OⁱPrC₆H₄)]₂Al(C₅Me₅). The structure and bonding of the bridging imido complex is examined with electrochemical measurements in tandem with density functional theory calculations.

Heme-FeIII Superoxide, Peroxide and Hydroperoxide Thermodynamic Relationships: FeIII-O2•- Complex H-Atom Abstraction Reactivity

Establishing redox and thermodynamic relationships between metal-ion-bound O2 and its reduced (and protonated) derivatives is critically important for a full understanding of (bio)chemical processes involving dioxygen processing. Here, a ferric heme peroxide complex, [(F8)FeIII-(O22-)]- (P) (F8 = tetrakis(2,6-difluorophenyl)porphyrinate), and a superoxide complex, [(F8)FeIII-(O2•-)] (S), are shown to be redox interconvertible. Using Cr(η-C6H6)2, an equilibrium state where S and P are present is established in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at -80 °C, allowing determination of the reduction potential of S as -1.17 V vs Fc+/0. P could be protonated with 2,6-lutidinium triflate, yielding the low-spin ferric hydroperoxide species, [(F8)FeIII-(OOH)] (HP). Partial conversion of HP back to P using a derivatized phosphazene base gave a P/HP equilibrium mixture, leading to the determination of pKa = 28.8 for HP (THF, -80 °C). With the measured reduction potential and pKa, the O-H bond dissociation free energy (BDFE) of hydroperoxide species HP was calculated to be 73.5 kcal/mol, employing the thermodynamic square scheme and Bordwell relationship. This calculated O-H BDFE of HP, in fact, lines up with an experimental demonstration of the oxidizing ability of S via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from TEMPO-H (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperdine-N-hydroxide, BDFE = 66.5 kcal/mol in THF), forming the hydroperoxide species HP and TEMPO radical. Kinetic studies carried out with TEMPO-H(D) reveal second-order behavior, kH = 0.5, kD = 0.08 M-1 s-1 (THF, -80 °C); thus, the hydrogen/deuterium kinetic isotope effect (KIE) = 6, consistent with H-atom abstraction by S being the rate-determining step. This appears to be the first case where experimentally derived thermodynamics lead to a ferric heme hydroperoxide OO-H BDFE determination, that FeIII-OOH species being formed via HAT reactivity of the partner ferric heme superoxide complex.

Reactions of In-Zn bonds with organic azides: products that result from hetero- and homo-bimetallic behaviour

The indyl anion, K[In(NON^Dipp)] (NON^Dipp = [O(SiMe₂NDipp)₂]^2-, Dipp = 2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃) reacts with group 12 compounds M(BDI^R)Cl (M = Zn, Cd; BDI = [HC{C(Me)NR}₂]^-, R = 2,4,6-Me₃C₆H₂ (Mes), Dipp) to afford the heterobimetallic compounds (NON^Dipp)In-M(BDI^R) that contain the first In-Zn and In-Cd bonds. The reactivity of the In-Zn bonds towards organic azides, R'N₃ (R' = Mes, Dipp, Ph) was investigated. (NON^Dipp)In-Zn(BDI^Mes) reduces MesN₃via an isolable triazenide intermediate to generate the bridging imido compound, (NON^Dipp)In-(μ-NMes)-Zn(BDI^Mes). Similar reactivity is noted from early-late heterobimetallic complexes. Under the same conditions, PhN₃ reacts to afford a product that contains a bridging tetraazenide ligand, which is formed from the formal (2 + 3)-cycloaddition of second azide to an indium-imido bond. However, increasing the bulk of the BDI-ligand in (NON^Dipp)In-Zn(BDI^Dipp) leads to reductive coupling of PhN₃ to give the hexazene complex. This mode of reactivity is reminiscent of the reductive behaviour of homobimetallic compounds.

Enhanced Rates of C-H Bond Cleavage by a Hydrogen-Bonded Synthetic Heme High-Valent Iron(IV) Oxo Complex

Secondary coordination sphere interactions are critical in facilitating the formation, stabilization, and enhanced reactivity of high-valent oxidants required for essential biochemical processes. Herein, we compare the C-H bond oxidizing capabilities of spectroscopically characterized synthetic heme iron(IV) oxo complexes, F8Cmpd-II (F8 = tetrakis(2,6-difluorophenyl)porphyrinate), and a 2,6-lutidinium triflate (LutH+) Lewis acid adduct involving ferryl O-atom hydrogen-bonding, F8Cmpd-II(LutH+). Second-order rate constants utilizing C-H and C-D substrates were obtained by UV-vis spectroscopic monitoring, while products were characterized and quantified by EPR spectroscopy and gas chromatography (GC). With xanthene, F8Cmpd-II(LutH+) reacts 40 times faster (k2 = 14.2 M-1 s-1; -90 °C) than does F8Cmpd-II, giving bixanthene plus xanthone and the heme product [F8FeIIIOH2]+. For substrates with greater C-H bond dissociation energies (BDEs) F8Cmpd-II(LutH+) reacts with the second order rate constants k2(9,10-dihydroanthracene; DHA) = 0.485 M-1 s-1 and k2(fluorene) = 0.102 M-1 s-1 (-90 °C); by contrast, F8Cmpd-II is unreactive toward these substrates. For xanthene vs xanthene-(d2), large, nonclassical deuterium kinetic isotope effects are roughly estimated for both F8Cmpd-II and F8Cmpd-II(LutH+). The deuterated H-bonded analog, F8Cmpd-II(LutD+), was also prepared; for the reaction with DHA, an inverse KIE (compared to F8Cmpd-II(LutH+)) was observed. This work originates/inaugurates experimental investigation of the reactivity of authentic H-bonded heme-based FeIV═O compounds, critically establishing the importance of oxo H-bonding (or protonation) in heme complexes and enzyme active sites.

Radical Rebound Hydroxylation Versus H-Atom Transfer in Non-Heme Iron(III)-Hydroxo Complexes: Reactivity and Structural Differentiation

The characterization of high-valent iron centers in enzymes has been aided by synthetic model systems that mimic their reactivity or structural and spectral features. For example, the cleavage of dioxygen often produces an iron(IV)-oxo that has been characterized in a number of enzymatic and synthetic systems. In non-heme 2-oxogluterate dependent (iron-2OG) enzymes, the ferryl species abstracts an H-atom from bound substrate to produce the proposed iron(III)-hydroxo and caged substrate radical. Most iron-2OG enzymes perform a radical rebound hydroxylation at the site of the H-atom abstraction (HAA); however, recent reports have shown that certain substrates can be desaturated through the loss of a second H atom at a site adjacent to a heteroatom (N or O) for most native desaturase substrates. One proposed mechanism for the removal of the second H-atom  involves a polar-cleavage mechanism (electron transfer-proton transfer) by the iron(III)-hydroxo, as opposed to a second HAA. Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of a series of iron complexes with hydrogen bonding interactions between bound aquo or hydroxo ligands and the secondary coordination sphere in ferrous and ferric complexes. Interconversion among the iron species is accomplished by stepwise proton or electron addition or subtraction, as well as H-atom transfer (HAT). The calculated bond dissociation free energies (BDFEs) of two ferric hydroxo complexes, differentiated by their noncovalent interactions and reactivity, suggest that neither complex is capable of activating even weak C-H bonds, lending further support to the proposed mechanism for desaturation in iron-2OG desaturase enzymes. Additionally, the ferric hydroxo species are differentiated by their reactivity toward performing a radical rebound hydroxylation of triphenylmethylradical. Our findings should encourage further study of the desaturase systems that may contain unique H-bonding motifs proximal to the active site that help bias substrate desaturation over hydroxylation.

Tuning the Geometric and Electronic Structure of Synthetic High-Valent Heme Iron(IV)-Oxo Models in the Presence of a Lewis Acid and Various Axial Ligands

High-valent ferryl species (e.g., (Por)FeIV═O, Cmpd-II) are observed or proposed key oxidizing intermediates in the catalytic cycles of heme-containing enzymes (P-450s, peroxidases, catalases, and cytochrome c oxidase) involved in biological respiration and oxidative metabolism. Herein, various axially ligated iron(IV)-oxo complexes were prepared to examine the influence of the identity of the base. These were generated by addition of various axial ligands (1,5-dicyclohexylimidazole (DCHIm), a tethered-imidazole system, and sodium derivatives of 3,5-dimethoxyphenolate and imidazolate). Characterization was carried out via UV-vis, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), 57Fe Mössbauer, Fe X-ray absorption (XAS), and 54/57Fe resonance Raman (rR) spectroscopies to confirm their formation and compare the axial ligand perturbation on the electronic and geometric structures of these heme iron(IV)-oxo species. Mössbauer studies confirmed that the axially ligated derivatives were iron(IV) and six-coordinate complexes. XAS and 54/57Fe rR data correlated with slight elongation of the iron-oxo bond with increasing donation from the axial ligands. The first reported synthetic H-bonded iron(IV)-oxo heme systems were made in the presence of the protic Lewis acid, 2,6-lutidinium triflate (LutH+), with (or without) DCHIm. Mössbauer, rR, and XAS spectroscopic data indicated the formation of molecular Lewis acid ferryl adducts (rather than full protonation). The reduction potentials of these novel Lewis acid adducts were bracketed through addition of outer-sphere reductants. The oxidizing capabilities of the ferryl species with or without Lewis acid vary drastically; addition of LutH+ to F8Cmpd-II (F8 = tetrakis(2,6-difluorophenyl)porphyrinate) increased its reduction potential by more than 890 mV, experimentally confirming that H-bonding interactions can increase the reactivity of ferryl species.

Titanium thiosalicylate complexes: functional metalloligands for the construction of redox-active heterometallic architectures

The titanium complex [TiCp*(thiosal)(thiosalH)] (1) has been synthesised by reaction of [TiCp*Me₃], Cp* = η⁵-C₅Me₅, with thiosalicylic acid (H₂thiosal). Complex 1 reacts with [M(μ-OH)(COD)]₂ (M = Rh, Ir) to yield the corresponding early-late heterobimetallic complexes [TiCp*(thiosal)₂M(COD)] (M = Rh (2); Ir (3)). Carbon monoxide replaces the COD ligand in 2 and 3 leading to the respective dicarbonyl complexes [TiCp*(thiosal)₂M(CO)₂] (M = Rh (4); Ir (5)). Compound 4 reacts with PPh₃ to yield the monocarbonyl derivative [TiCp*(thiosal)₂Rh(CO)(PPh₃)] (6). The reaction of compound 1 with LiⁿBu yields the tetrametallic complex [{TiCp*(thiosal)₂Li}₂(THF)₃(H₂O)] (7). Compound 7 reacts with [RuCp*Cl(COD)] yielding the heterometallic complex [TiCp*(thiosal)₂RuCp*] (8). The molecular structures of compounds 4, 5 and 7 have been studied by X-ray diffraction. From cyclic voltammetric (CV) and square wave voltammetric (SWV) experiments, we observed that attachment of the titanium moiety of precursor 1 to a late transition metal moiety through the sulfur atoms has a significant influence on the reduction behaviour of the Ti(iv) metal centre. Thus, monometallic 1 exhibits an irreversible reduction process at -1.15 V vs. SCE, whereas the CVs of heterobimetallic compounds 2-6 are characterized by the reversible or quasi-reversible one-electron reduction of the Ti(iv)/Ti(iii) system, suggesting a significant stabilization of the Ti(iii) reduced species. Likewise, substitution of the M(COD) diolefin fragment in 2 and 3 by the M(CO)₂ carbonyl-containing moiety (in compounds 4 and 5) leads to a significant anodic shift in the titanium E_1/2 reduction redox potentials.

A bioinspired iron catalyst for nitrate and perchlorate reduction

Nitrate and perchlorate have considerable use in technology, synthetic materials, and agriculture; as a result, they have become pervasive water pollutants. Industrial strategies to chemically reduce these oxyanions often require the use of harsh conditions, but microorganisms can efficiently reduce them enzymatically. We developed an iron catalyst inspired by the active sites of nitrate reductase and (per)chlorate reductase enzymes. The catalyst features a secondary coordination sphere that aids in oxyanion deoxygenation. Upon reduction of the oxyanions, an iron(III)-oxo is formed, which in the presence of protons and electrons regenerates the catalyst and releases water.

Tuning the Fe(II/III) Redox Potential in Nonheme Fe(II)-Hydroxo Complexes through Primary and Secondary Coordination Sphere Modifications

The derivatization of the imino-functionalized tris(pyrrolylmethyl)amine ligand framework, N(_Xpi^R)₃ (_XL^R; X = H, Br; R = cyclohexyl (Cy), phenyl (Ph), 2,6- diisopropylphenyl (DIPP)), is reported. Modular ligand synthesis allows for facile modification of both the primary and secondary coordination sphere electronics. The iron(II)-hydroxo complexes, N(_Xpi^R)(_Xafa^R)₂Fe(II)OH (_XL^RFe^IIOH), are synthesized to establish the impact of the ligand modifications on the complexes' electronic properties, including their chemical and electrochemical oxidation. Cyclic voltammetry demonstrates that the Fe(II/III) redox couple spans a 400 mV range across the series. The origin of the shifted potential is explained based on spectroscopic, structural, and theoretical analyses of the iron(II) and iron(III) compounds.

Structural elucidation of a mononuclear titanium methylidene

The first example of a structurally characterized titanium methylidene, (PN)₂TiCH₂, has been prepared via one-electron oxidation of (PN)₂Ti(CH₃) followed by deprotonation with an ylide or by H-atom abstraction using an aryloxyl radical.

Tantallacyclopentadiene as a unique metal-containing diene ligand coordinated to nickel for preparing tantalum–nickel heterobimetallic complexes

The mononuclear tantallacyclopentadiene, TaCl₃(C₄H₂^tBu₂), coordinates to Ni to form heterobimetallic complexes of Cl₃Ta(μ-C₄H₂^tBu₂)Ni(L) (L = COD, phosphines, IPr).

Complete Series of {FeNO}(8), {FeNO}(7), and {FeNO}(6) Complexes Stabilized by a Tetracarbene Macrocycle

Use of a macrocyclic tetracarbene ligand, which is topologically reminiscent of tetrapyrrole macrocycles though electronically distinct, has allowed for the isolation, X-ray crystallographic characterization and comprehensive spectroscopic investigation of a complete set of {FeNO}(x) complexes (x = 6, 7, 8). Electrochemical reduction, or chemical reduction with CoCp2, of the {FeNO}(7) complex 1 leads to the organometallic {FeNO}(8) species 2. Its crystallographic structure determination is the first for a nonheme iron nitroxyl {FeNO}(8) and has allowed to identify structural trends among the series of {FeNO}(x) complexes. Combined experimental data including (57)Fe Mössbauer, IR, UV-vis-NIR, NMR and Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopies in concert with DFT calculations suggest a largely metal centered reduction of 1 to form the low spin (S = 0) {FeNO}(8) species 2. The very strong σ-donor character of the tetracarbene ligand imparts unusual properties and spectroscopic signatures such as low (57)Fe Mössbauer isomer shifts and linear Fe-N-O units with high IR stretching frequencies for the NO ligand. The observed metal-centered reduction leads to distinct reactivity patterns of the {FeNO}(8) species. In contrast to literature reported {FeNO}(8) complexes, 2 does not undergo NO protonation under strictly anaerobic conditions. Only in the presence of both dioxygen and protons is rapid and clean oxidation to the {FeNO}(7) complex 1 observed. While 1 is stable toward dioxygen, its reaction with dioxygen under NO atmosphere forms the {FeNO}(6)(ONO) complex 3 that features an unusual O-nitrito ligand trans to the NO. 3 is a rare example of a nonheme octahedral {FeNO}(6) complex. Its electrochemical or chemical reduction triggers dissociation of the O-nitrito ligand and sequential formation of the {FeNO}(7) and {FeNO}(8) compounds 1 and 2. A consistent electronic structure picture has been derived for these unique organometallic variants of the key bioinorganic {FeNO}(x) functional units.

Allylic amination reactivity of Ni, Pd, and Pt heterobimetallic and monometallic complexes

Transition metal heterobimetallic complexes with dative metal–metal interactions have the potential for novel fast reactivity.

Investigation into the reactivity of 16-electron complexes Cp#Co(S2C2B10H10) (Cp# = Cp, Cp*) towards methyl diazoacetate and toluenesulphonyl azide

A three-component reaction of the 16-electron half-sandwich complex Cp*Co(S₂C₂B₁₀H₁₀) (2) with both methyl diazoacetate (MDA) and toluenesulphonyl azide (TsN₃) led to the formation of complexes 3 and 4, while a two-component reaction of complex 2 with MDA afforded products 5–7.
