Coordination-induced assemblies of quantum dots in amphiphilic thermo-responsive block copolymer micelles: morphologies, optical properties and applications

Thermo-responsive dual-emitting QD/BCP assemblies with QDs located in the core (CDMs), shell (SDMs) and the interface (IDMs) between the core and the shell of micelles were constructed via coordination-driven assemblies for the selective detection of TNP and Hg²⁺ ions.

Surfactant Behavior of Amphiphilic Polymer-Tethered Nanoparticles

In recent years, an emerging research area has been the surfactant behavior of polymer-tethered nanoparticles. In this feature article, we have provided a general introduction to the synthesis, self-assembly, and interfacial activity of polymer-tethered inorganic nanoparticles, polymer-tethered organic nanoparticles, and polymer-tethered natural nanoparticles. In addition, applications of the polymer-tethered nanoparticles in colloidal and materials science are briefly reviewed. All research demonstrates that amphiphilic polymer-tethered nanoparticles exhibit surfactant behavior and can be used as elemental building blocks for the fabrication of advanced structures by the self-assembly approach. The polymer-tethered nanoparticles provide new opportunities to engineer materials and biomaterials possessing specific functionality and physical properties.

Polystyrene-Core-Silica-Shell Hybrid Particles Containing Gold and Magnetic Nanoparticles

Polystyrene-core-silica-shell hybrid particles were synthesized by combining the self-assembly of nanoparticles and the polymer with a silica coating strategy. The core-shell hybrid particles are composed of gold-nanoparticle-decorated polystyrene (PS-AuNP) colloids as the core and silica particles as the shell. PS-AuNP colloids were generated by the self-assembly of the PS-grafted AuNPs. The silica coating improved the thermal stability and dispersibility of the AuNPs. By removing the "free" PS of the core, hollow particles with a hydrophobic cage having a AuNP corona and an inert silica shell were obtained. Also, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were encapsulated in the core, which resulted in magnetic core-shell hybrid particles by the same strategy. These particles have potential applications in biomolecular separation and high-temperature catalysis and as nanoreactors.

Synthesis of water-compatible surface-imprinted polymer via click chemistry and RAFT precipitation polymerization for highly selective and sensitive electrochemical assay of fenitrothion

A novel water-compatible fenitrothion imprinted polymer was prepared on Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) by click chemistry and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) precipitation polymerization (RAFTPP). The RAFT chain-transfer agent was synthesized on the surface of AuNPs using click chemistry, then an imprinted polymer with hydrophilic polymer brushes was prepared on the RAFT chain-transfer agent modified AuNPs by RAFTPP, mediated by hydrophilic polyethylene glycol macromolecular cochain-transfer agent. The obtained molecularly imprinted material showed improved accessibility to fenitrothion and recognition property in water medium. When the material was immobilized on an ionic liquid functionalized graphene coated glassy carbon electrode for the electrochemical determination of fenitrothion, the resulting electrochemical sensor presented linear response in the range of 0.01-5 μM, with a sensitivity of 6.1 μA/μM mm(2). The low limit of detection was 8 nM (S/N=3). The sensor was successfully applied to the determination of real samples and the recovery for standard added was 95-108%.

Liquid/Liquid interfacial fabrication of thermosensitive and catalytically active Ag nanoparticle-doped block copolymer composite foam films

An aqueous solution of AgNO3 (upper phase) and a DMF/CHCl3 solution of polystyrene-b-poly(acryl acid)-b-polystyrene (PS-b-PAA-b-PS) or PS-b-PAA-b-PS/1,6-diaminohexane (DAH) (lower phase) constituted a planar liquid/liquid interface. The lower phase gradually transformed to a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion via spontaneous emulsification due to the "ouzo effect". Polymer molecules, DAH molecules, and Ag(+) ions assembled into microcapsules around emulsion droplets that adsorbed at the planar liquid/liquid interface, resulting in formation of a foam film. DAH acted as a cross-linker during this process. Transmission electron microscopic observations indicated that Ag nanoclusters that were generated through reduction of Ag(+) ions by DMF were homogeneously dispersed in the walls of the foam structure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic investigations revealed that Ag(I) and Ag(0) coexisted in the film, and Ag(I) transformed to Ag(0) after further treatment. The film formed without DAH was not stable, while the film formed with DAH was very stable due to intermolecular attraction between PAA and DAH and formation of amides, as revealed by FTIR spectra. The film formed with DAH exhibited high and durable catalytic activity for hydrogenation of nitro compounds and, very interestingly, exhibited thermoresponsive catalytic behavior.

Interface-directed self-assembly of gold nanoparticles and fabrication of hybrid hollow capsules by interfacial cross-linking polymerization

Amphiphilic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were produced at liquid-liquid interface via ligand exchange between hydrophilic AuNPs and disulfide-containing polymer chains. By using oil droplets as templates, hybrid hollow capsules with AuNPs on the surfaces were obtained after interfacial cross-linking polymerization. The volume ratio of toluene to water exerts an important effect on the size of capsules. The average size of the capsules increases with the volume ratio. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to characterize the hollow structures. In this research, not only one-component but also multicomponent hollow capsules were prepared by copolymerization of acrylamide and hybrid AuNPs at liquid-liquid interface. Because of the improvement in hydrophilicity of the hollow capsules, the average size of multicomponent capsules is bigger than one-component ones in aqueous solution.
