Abstract
Heterobimetallic tert-butoxides of alkali metal cations with tetravalent actinide centers exhibit two distinctive structural motifs, [AnM2(OtBu)6] and [AnM3(OtBu)7] (AnIV = Th, U and MI = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs), evidently governed by the size of the alkali metal ions. Both [AnM3(OtBu)7] AnM3 (AnIV = U, MI = Li; AnIV = Th, MI = Li, Na) and [AnM2(OtBu)6] AnM2 (AnIV = U, MI = Na-Cs; AnIV = Th, MI = K-Cs) compounds are obtained in nearly quantitative yields by reacting actinide and alkali metal silyl amides with an excess of tert-butyl alcohol. The AnM3 complexes form a cubane-type coordination motif, whereas the AnM2 complexes display a geometry resembling two face-shared bipyramids. The sodium derivatives of thorium and uranium (ThNa3 and UNa2) allow the determination of the structural transition threshold as a function of the ratio of the ionic radii ri(AnIV)/ri(MI). The AnM3 complexes are formed for ratios above 0.92 and the AnM2 type is formed for ratios below 0.87. All compounds are unambiguously characterized in both solution and solid states by NMR and IR spectroscopic studies and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, respectively.

Abstract
Acquiring fundamental knowledge of properties of actinide-based materials is a necessary step to create new possibilities for addressing the current challenges in the nuclear energy and nuclear waste sectors. In this report, we established a photophysics-electronics correlation for actinide-containing metal-organic frameworks (An-MOFs) as a function of excitation wavelength, for the first time. A stepwise approach for dynamically modulating electronic properties was applied for the first time towards actinide-based heterometallic MOFs through integration of photochromic linkers. Optical cycling, modeling of density of states near the Fermi edge, conductivity measurements, and photoisomerization kinetics were employed to shed light on the process of tailoring optoelectronic properties of An-MOFs. Furthermore, the first photochromic MOF-based field-effect transistor, in which the field-effect response could be changed through light exposure, was constructed. As a demonstration, the change in current upon light exposure was sufficient to operate a two-LED fail-safe indicator circuit.

Abstract
The application of silica mesoporous structures in drug delivery and the removal of pollutants and organic compounds through catalytic reactions is increasing due to their unique characteristics, including high loading capacities, tunable pores, large surface areas, sustainability, and so on. This review focuses on very well-studied class of different construction mesoporous silica nano(particles), such as MCM-41, SBA-15, and SBA-16. We discuss the essential parameters involved in the synthesis of these materials with providing a diverse set of examples. In addition, the recent advances in silica mesoporous structures for drug delivery and catalytic applications are presented to fill the existing gap in the literature with providing some promising examples on this topic for the scientists in both industry and academia active in the field. Regarding the catalytic applications, mesoporous silica particles have shown some promises to remove the organic pollutants and to synthesize final products with high yields due to the ease with which their surfaces can be modified with various ligands to create appropriate interactions with target molecules. In the drug delivery process, as nanocarriers, they have also shown very good performance thanks to the easy surface functionalization but also adjustability of their porosities to providing in-vivo and in-vitro cargo delivery at the target site with appropriate rate.

Abstract
We report the structural properties of ultra-small ThO2 and UO2 nanoparticles (NPs), which were synthesized without strong binding surface ligands by employing a covalent organic framework (COF-5) as an inert template. The resultant NPs were used to observe how structural properties are affected by decreasing grain size within bulk actinide oxides, which has implications for understanding the behavior of nuclear fuel materials. Through a comprehensive characterization strategy, we gain insight regarding how structure at the NP surface differs from the interior. Characterization using electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering indicates that growth of the ThO2 and UO2 NPs was confined by the pores of the COF template, resulting in sub-3 nm particles. X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy results indicate that the NPs are best described as ThO2 and UO2 materials with unpassivated surfaces. The surface layers of these particles compensate for high surface energy by exhibiting a broader distribution of Th-O and U-O bond distances despite retaining average bond lengths that are characteristic of bulk ThO2 and UO2. The combined synthesis and physical characterization efforts provide a detailed picture of actinide oxide structure at the nanoscale, which remains highly underexplored compared to transition metal counterparts.

Abstract
Silicon oxide surface properties can be easily modified by grafting alkoxysilane molecules. Here, we studied the structure and the morphology of ultrathin layers prepared by the grafting of alkoxysilanes having different head groups (thiol, amine, and iodo) in supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) on model plane silicon oxide surfaces. Several characterization techniques (X-ray reflectivity, water contact angle, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM)) were used to determine the physicochemical properties of the layers prepared at different temperatures. Moreover, for the first time, AFM peak force measurements were used to delve deeper into the determination of the structure of these ultrathin alkoxysilane layers. The results show that the grafting temperature and the nature of the head group strongly affect the morphology and structure of the grafted layers. Dense monolayers are obtained with 3-(mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane at 60 °C, polycondensed layers are always prepared with [3-(aminoethylamino)propyl]trimethoxysilane, and a dense bilayer is synthesized with 3-(iodopropyl)triethoxysilane at 120 °C.

Abstract
A urea-functionalized ordered mesoporous polymeric nanoparticle for removing the perrhenate anion ReO4- as the surrogate of the particularly intractable anion radioactive pollutant TcO4- was demonstrated in the present study. This nanomaterial (denoted as urea-MPN) was produced for the first time by a surfactant-directed urea-phenol-formaldehyde resol oligomers self-assembly protocol under hydrothermal condition. The obtained urea-MPN possessed the uniform nanosized spherical morphology with a 3D interconnected ordered cubic mesoporous structure. Also, the urea functional groups were succefully embedded in the polymer framework without the alteration of the molecular configuration. Meanwhile, it exhibited excellent β radiation resistance up to 200 kGy dose. We employed the perrhenate anion ReO4- to test its potential for the removal of anionic radioactive pollutant TcO4- from water. Interestingly, the optimized urea-MPN nanocomposite achieved the high removal efficiency at a low concentration of 0.25 mM within a short contact time of 30 min. The control experimental results revealed that the short nanoscale pore channels and the hydrophobic mesopore surface facilitated the hydrogen-bonding interaction between the charge-diffuse ReO4- tetrahedral oxoanion and the urea moieties in the framework of urea-MPN, accounting for the rapid and effective removal performance in pure water. Importantly, it can selectively capture ReO4- in the presence of different competitive anions including NO3-, CO32-, SO42-, and PO43-. This attractive capability of this unique nanosized mesoporous polymeric sorbent will pave the way for the diverse applications in the decontamination of nuclear wastes in a more economical and sustainable manner.

Abstract
A preorganized tetradentate phenanthrolineamide (DAPhen) ligand with hard and soft donors combined in the same molecule has been found to possess high extraction ability toward actinides over lanthanides from acidic aqueous solution in our previous work. Herein we grafted phenanthrolineamide groups onto a large-pore three-dimensional cubic silica support by the reaction of DAPhen siloxane with KIT-6 substrate to prepare a novel uranium-selective sorbent, KIT-6-DAPhen. The as-synthesized sorbent was well-characterized by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption/desorption, X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, 13C cross-polarization magic-angle spinning NMR, and TGA techniques, which confirmed the consummation of the functionalization. Subsequently, the effects of contact time, solution pH, initial U(VI) concentration, and the presence of competing metal ions on the U(VI) sorption onto KIT-6-DAPhen sorbent were investigated in detail. It was found that KIT-6-DAPhen showed largely enhanced sorption capacity and excellent selectivity toward U(VI). The maximum sorption capacity of KIT-6-DAPhen at pH 5.0 reaches 328 mg of U/g of sorbent, which is superior to most of functionalized mesoporous silica materials. Density functional theory coupled with quasi-relativistic small-core pseudopotentials was used to explore the sorption interaction between U(VI) and KIT-6-DAPhen, which gives a sorption reaction of KIT-6-DAPhen + [UO2(H2O)5]2+ + NO3- ⇄ [UO2(KIT-6-DAPhen)(NO3)]+ + 5H2O. The findings of the present work provide new clues for developing new actinide sorbents by combining new ligands with various mesoporous matrixes.

Abstract
Porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) incorporating a high concentration of acid functional groups possess characteristics that are promising for use in separating lanthanide and actinide metal ions, as required in the treatment of radioactive waste. These materials have been shown to be indefinitely stable to concentrated acids and bases, potentially allowing for multiple adsorption/stripping cycles. Additionally, the PAFs combine exceptional features from MOFs and inorganic/activated carbons giving rise to tunable pore surfaces and maximum chemical stability. Herein, we present a study of the adsorption of selected metal ions, Sr(2+), Fe(3+), Nd(3+), and Am(3+), from aqueous solutions employing a carbon-based porous aromatic framework, BPP-7 (Berkeley Porous Polymer-7). This material displays high metal loading capacities together with excellent adsorption selectivity for neodymium over strontium based on Langmuir adsorption isotherms and ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) calculations. Based in part upon X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies, the stronger adsorption of neodymium is attributed to multiple metal ion and binding site interactions resulting from the densely functionalized and highly interpenetrated structure of BPP-7. Recyclability and combustibility experiments demonstrate that multiple adsorption/stripping cycles can be completed with minimal degradation of the polymer adsorption capacity.

Solid mesostructured polymer-surfactant films at the air-liquid interface. Adv Colloid Interface Sci 2015; 222:564-72. Abstract
Pioneering work by Edler et al. has spawned a new sub-set of mesostructured materials. These are solid, self-supporting films comprising surfactant micelles encased within polymer hydrogel; composite polymer-surfactant films can be grown spontaneously at the air-liquid interface and have defined and controllable mesostructures. Addition of siliconalkoxide to polymer-surfactant mixtures allows for the growth of mesostructured hybrid polymer-surfactant silica films that retain film geometry after calcinations and exhibit superior mechanical properties to typically brittle inorganic films. Growing films at the air-liquid interface provides a rapid and simple means to prepare ordered solid inorganic films, and to date the only method for generating mesostructured films thick enough (up to several hundred microns) to be removed from the interface. Applications of these films could range from catalysis to encapsulation of hydrophobic species and drug delivery. Film properties and mesostructures are sensitive to surfactant structure, polymer properties and polymer-surfactant phase behaviour: herein it will be shown how film mesostructure can be tailored by directing these parameters, and some interesting analogies will be drawn with more familiar mesostructured silica materials.

Abstract
Efficient capture of highly toxic radionuclides with long half-lives such as Americium-241 is crucial to prevent radionuclides from diffusing into the biosphere. To reach this purpose, three different types of mesoporous silicas functionalized with phosphonic acid ligands (SBA-POH, MCM-POH, and BPMO-POH) were synthesized via a facile procedure. The structure, surface chemistry, and micromorphology of the materials were fully characterized by (31)P/(13)C/(29)Si MAS NMR, XPS, and XRD analysis. Efficient adsorption of Am(III) was realized with a fast rate to reach equilibrium (within 10 min). Influences including structural parameters and functionalization degree on the adsorption behavior were investigated. Slope analysis of the equilibrium data suggested that the coordination with Am(III) involved the exchange of three protons. Moreover, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis, in combination with XPS survey, was employed for an in-depth probe into the binding mechanism by using Eu(III) as a simulant due to its similar coordination behavior and benign property. The results showed three phosphonic acid ligands were coordinated to Eu(III) in bidentate fashion, and Eu(P(O)O)3(H2O) species were formed with the Eu-O coordination number of 7. These phosphonic acid-functionalized mesoporous silicas should be promising for the treatment of Am-containing radioactive liquid waste.

Abstract
The hydrolytic stability of lanthanide and actinide selective mono- and polyphosphonate-functionalized mesoporous zirconium titanium oxide adsorbents has been investigated in nitric acid solutions. Hydrolytic degradation of the surfaces, as measured through the fractional loss of phosphorus and elements of the oxide framework, increased by more than an order of magnitude as the nitric acid concentration was increased from 0 to 2 mol/L. The unfunctionalized parent oxide suffered considerable dissolution in 2 mol/L acid over a period of 72 h. Under identical conditions, the fractional Zr and Ti release was reduced to 1 × 10(-2) for monophosphonate functionalized hybrids and reached as low as 1 × 10(-6) for trisphosphonate functionalized variants. The bisphosphonates showed intermediate values. The leaching of P, Zr and Ti was found to be incongruent with the Zr leaching to a lesser extent implying enhanced stability of the Zr-O-P bond. Quantitative analysis of the dissolution kinetics indicated a parabolic dissolution model with a rate constant in the range of 0.5-1.5 mg g(-1) min(-1/2) for the elemental leaching of P, Ti, and Zr. The leaching of Zr from the mesoporous matrix was relatively more complex than for the other elements with evidence of a leaching mechanism involving two processes. ToF-SIMS and DRIFT analysis demonstrated that after leaching in 2 M HNO3 for 24 h, a significant proportion of grafted ligands remained on the surface. The oxide functionalized with amino trismethylenephosphonic acid, which had previously shown excellent (153)Gd(3+) selectivity, was demonstrated to have outstanding stability, with low fractional elemental losses and preservation of mesoporous texture even after leaching for 24 h in 2 M HNO3. This suggests this particular hybrid to be worthy of additional study.
