Abstract
A novel ZnII funnel complex that presents three phenol functions within a calix[6]arene macrocycle is described. Host-guest studies, monitored by 1H NMR spectroscopy, evaluate the impact of the replacement of three anisole moieties present in a previously described system with phenols. It is now shown that the dicationic complex is responsive to anions, whereas deprotonation of one phenol unit completely inhibits any hosting response. These properties, combined with those of the corresponding protonated ligand, allow us to obtain different molecular switches, and one of them shows guest embedment changes between four different host states, thus giving rise to a rare case of a triple molecular switch.

Abstract
The development of chemosensors that can selectively detect phosphatidylcholines (PCs) in biological samples is of medical relevance considering the importance of these phospholipids in cell growth and survival. Their selective sensing over phosphatidylethanolamines (PEs) is however a challenging task. We report here on the chemosensing capacities of calix[6]tris-pyrenylurea 1, which is able to selectively interact with phosphatidylcholine-type lipids in organic media. Host 1 also binds them in a biphasic chloroform/water solution, opening the way to the design of selective chemosensors for these lipids in biological media. The results obtained by NMR, fluorescence spectroscopy and modelling studies show that the selectivity is the result of the high degree of complementarity between the lipids' zwitterionic phosphatidylcholine headgroup and the receptor's H-bonding donor site and hydrophobic pocket. The mode of recognition is reminiscent of natural systems, such as human phosphatidylcholine transfer proteins (PC-TPs), validating the biomimetic approach adopted in our work.

Abstract
The syntheses and single crystal X-ray analyses of five strapped salicylaldoxime/salicylaldimine based dicopper(ii) receptors utilising a new piperazine linker are described. The complexes form 2 + 2 metallocycles and the molecular structures of all four complexes possess a small internal cavity with the utilisation of a short piperazine linker. The molecular structures of complexes [Cu2(L(4) - H)(L(4) - 2H) ⊂ DMF]BF4·DMF, and [Cu2(L(4) - H)2Br]Br·1.25DMSO·H2O·MeOH, show that intramolecular H-bonding interactions due to the presence of -OH (oxime moiety) groups lead to a Pacman-like cleft arrangement of the two metal coordinating subunits in the metallo-macrocycle. The geometrical constraints brought about by this constrained cleft make the receptor coordinate strongly to a bromide anion involving both metal centres as evidenced by whereas in the larger tetrafluroborate anion is excluded. Absence of the oxime moiety around the metal coordination site of the ligand as demonstrated in the complexes [Cu2(L(5))2BF4](BF4)3, and [Cu2(L(5))2Br]Br3·2MeOH, resulted in less constrained dicopper(ii) helicate forms. For these complexes no anion size discrimination was observed. The addition of pyridine solvent to a slightly modified piperazine-linked ligand produces an expanded 3 + 3 tube-like tricopper complex [Cu3(L(4a) - H)3Py3](BF4)2·(MeOH)3·PF6·(H2O)3, , with two coordinated pyridine molecules occupying the newly formed cavity.

Abstract
The effects of the nonprotonated and protonated calix[6]crypturea 1/1(•)H(+) on the PF6(-) and Cl(-) salts of a luminescent Ru-TAP complex (TAP = 1,4,5,8-tetraazaphenanthrene) were investigated. Thus, the phototriggered basic properties of this complex were examined with 1(•)H(+) in acetonitrile (MeCN) and butyronitrile (BuCN). The Ru excited complex was shown to be able to extract a proton from the protonated calixarene, accompanied by a luminescence quenching in both solvents. However, in BuCN, the Cl(-) salt of the complex exhibited a surprising behavior in the presence of 1/1(•)H(+). Although an emission decrease was observed with the protonated calixarene, an emission increase was evidenced in the presence of nonprotonated 1. As the Cl(-) ions were shown to inhibit the luminescence of the complex in BuCN, this luminescence increase by nonprotonated 1 was attributed to the protection effect of 1 by encapsulation of the Cl(-) anions into the tris-urea binding site. The study of the luminescence lifetimes of the Ru-TAP complex in BuCN as a function of temperature for the PF6(-) and Cl(-) salts in the absence and presence of 1 led to the following conclusions. In BuCN, in contrast to MeCN, in addition to ion pairing, because of the poor solvation of the ions, the luminescent metal-to-ligand charge transfer ((3)MLCT) state could reach two metal-centered ((3)MC) states, one of which is in equilibrium with the (3)MLCT state during the emission lifetime. The reaction of Cl(-) with this latter (3)MC state would be responsible for the luminescence quenching, in agreement with the formation of photosubstitution products.

Abstract
Tonsil Actisil FF, which is a commercial bentonitic clay, promotes the formation of cycloveratrylene macrocycles and benzyl oligomers from the corresponding benzyl alcohols in good yields under microwave heating and infrared irradiation in the absence of solvent in both cases. The catalytic reaction is sensitive to the type of substituent on the aromatic ring. Thus, when benzyl alcohol was substituted with a methylenedioxy, two methoxy or three methoxy groups, a cyclooligomerisation process was induced. Unsubstituted, methyl and methoxy benzyl alcohols yielded linear oligomers. In addition, computational chemistry calculations were performed to establish a validated mechanistic pathway to explain the growth of the obtained linear oligomers.
