Synthesis, Characterization, and Performance of Pyridomethene-BF2 Fluorescence Dye-Doped PVA Thin Film and PVP Nanofibers as Low γ-ray Dosimeters

Currently, particular attention is paid to public health related to the field of γ-ray dosimetry, which is becoming increasingly important in medical diagnostic processes. Incorporating sensitive dyes as radiation dose sensors in different material hosts has shown promising radiation dosimetry application routes. In this perspective, the current study proposes a new fluorescent dye based on boron difluoride complex, the pyridomethene-BF2 named 2-(1-(difluoroboraneyl)-1,2-dihydroquinolin-2-yl)-2-(1-methylquinoxalin-2-ylidene) acetonitrile (DBDMA) as an indicator for low γ-ray doses. The different optical and quantum chemical parameters and the spectral behavior of the selected fluorescent dye were first studied. Then, PVP/DBDMA electrospun nanofibers and PVA/DBDMA thin films were prepared. The different UV-vis spectrophotometric and fluorescence studies revealed a clear change after exposure to different γ-ray doses. Thermogravimetric analysis exhibited excellent thermal stability of the prepared nanocomposite films, showing altered thermal behavior after γ-ray treatment. Furthermore, the SEM evaluation displayed a significant modification in the surface morphology of the two designed nanomaterials with increased radiation dose intensity. These novel forms of dosimeter designed in nanoscale composites could therefore constitute a promising and efficient alternative for rapid and accurate detection of low doses of γ-rays in various medical applications.

Photoinduced and Classical Sol-Gel Synthesis: Spectral and Photophysical Behavior of Silica Matrix Doped by Novel Fluorescent Dye Based on Boron Difluoride Complex

The boron difluoride complex is known as an extraordinary class of fluorescent dyes, which has attracted research interest because of its excellent properties. This article reports the optical properties such as absorption, fluorescence, molar absorptivity, and photo-physical parameters like dipole moment, and oscillator strength of new fluorescent organic dye based on boron difluoride complex 2-(1-(difluoroboraneyl)-1,2-dihydroquinolin-2-yl)-2-(1-methylquinoxalin-2-ylidene) acetonitrile (DBDMA). The spectral characterization of the dye was measured in sol-gel glass, photosol-gel, and organic-inorganic matrices. The absorption and fluorescence properties of DBDMA in sol-gel glass matrices were compared with each other. Compared with the classical sol-gel, it was noticed that the photosol-gel matrix is the best one with immobilized DBDMA. In the latter, a large stokes shift was obtained (97 nm) and a high fluorescence quantum yield of 0.5. Special attention was paid to the addition of gold NPs into the hybrid material. The fluorescence emission intensity of the DBDMA with and without gold nanoparticles in different solid media is described, and that displayed organic-inorganic matrix behavior is the best host.

Effect of the Molecular Conformation on Excitation Energy Transfer in Conformationally Constrained Boryl-BODIPY Dyads

We studied the dual emission characteristics of a series of boryl-BODIPYs (1-6) comprised of triarylborane (TAB) as an energy donor and BODIPY as an energy acceptor. The molecular conformations of dyads 1-6 were systematically tuned by judiciously changing the spacer that bridged the boryl and BODIPY moieties. Frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) are localized in 3, 4, and 6 with a twisted molecular conformation. In contrast, FMOs are significantly delocalized in 1, 2, and 5 with the least-twisted molecular conformation. Dyads 1-6 showed dual emission features when they were excited at the TAB-dominated absorption band. However, the ratio between the two emission bands in 1-6 significantly varied depending on the molecular conformations. Systematic photoluminescence (PL) studies (both steady-state and time-resolved PL) together with computational, crystal structure, and anion binding studies established that the frustrated excited-state energy transfer from borane to BODIPY is the cause of the dual emission features in these molecular dyads. These studies also revealed that the energy transfer from borane to BODIPY can be elegantly tuned by modulating the dihedral angle between these two moieties.

Molecular Conformational Effect on Optical Properties and Fluoride Induced Color Changes in Triarylborane-Vinylbithiophene-BODIPY Conjugates

Three new triads [bis(mesityl)boryl (Mes₂B)-vinylbithiophene-BODIPY] bearing zero (1), two (2), and four (3) methyl groups on the BODIPY core are synthesized, and their optical properties are reported. The vinyl linker between the thiophene rings in the spacer moiety improved the electronic communication between the boryl and BODIPY units. It displayed a bathochromic shift in the absorption and emission spectra compared to the Mes₂B-bithiophene-BODIPY triad reported elsewhere. These compounds exhibit intriguing multiple-emission features due to an incomplete energy transfer from donor borane to the acceptor BODIPY unit. These compounds' photoluminescence color can be conveniently fine-tuned by fluoride binding at the coordinatively unsaturated tricoordinate boron center. Triad 3, with a rigid molecular structure, showed a sharp emission band, whereas triads 1 and 2, with flexible molecular structures, displayed broad emission bands with a robust bathochromic shift, ascribed to their excited state structural reorganizations. These triads selectively bind fluoride ions and show colorimetric responses, which can be seen with an unaided eye. DFT computational studies were performed to rationalize the optical signatures of these compounds.

Structurally Characterized BODIPY-Appended Oxidovanadium(IV) β-Diketonates for Mitochondria-Targeted Photocytotoxicity

Mixed-ligand oxidovanadium(IV) β-diketonates having NNN-donor dipicolylamine-conjugated to boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY in L₁) and diiodo-BODIPY (in L₂) moieties, namely, [VO(L₁)(acac)]Cl (1), [VO(L₂)(acac)]Cl (2), and [VO(L₁)(dbm)]Cl (3), where acac and dbm are monoanionic O,O-donor acetylacetone and 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedione, were prepared, characterized, and tested for their photoinduced anticancer activity in visible light. Complexes 1 and 2 were structurally characterized as their PF₆ ^- salts (1a and 2a) by X-ray crystallography. They showed V^IVN₃O₃ six-coordinate geometry with dipicolylamine base as the facial ligand. The non-iodinated BODIPY complexes displayed absorption maxima at ∼501 nm, while it is ∼535 nm for the di-iodinated 2 in 10% DMSO-PBS buffer medium (pH = 7.2). Complexes 1 and 3 being green emissive (λ_em, ∼512 nm; λ_ex, 470 nm; Φ_F, ∼0.10) in 10% aqueous DMSO were used for cellular imaging studies. Complex 3 localized primarily in the mitochondria of the cervical HeLa cells with a co-localization coefficient value of 0.7. The non-emissive diiodo-BODIPY complex 2 showed generation of singlet oxygen (Φ_Δ ≈ 0.47) on light activation. Annexin-V assay showed singlet oxygen-mediated cellular apoptosis, making this complex a targeted PDT agent.

Morpholino-Substituted BODIPY Species: Synthesis, Structure and Electrochemical Studies

Functionalization of 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) chromophores at the 2,6-positions with iodo substituents and morpholino-substituted α-methyl groups affords molecules with strong absorbance in the visible spectrum. The effect of such substitution on the solid-state arrangements, absorption, fluorescence and electronic properties of these dye molecules is reported. The spectroscopic and spectroelectrochemical measurements display intense absorptions in the UV-visible spectrum with bathochromic shifts, in comparison to unfunctionalized BODIPY, and a positive shift in redox potentials due to functionalisation of the BODIPY core. Halogen bonds are observed in the solid-state structures of both halogenated BODIPY species, which in one case leads to the formation of an unusual halogen bonded framework.

Monofunctionalized 1,3,5,7-TetraarylazaBODIPYs and Their Application in the Synthesis of AzaBODIPY Based Conjugates

A series of monofunctionalized 1,3,5,7-tetraarylazaBODIPYs containing functional groups such as p-hydroxymethyl phenyl, p-hydroxyphenyl, p-cyanophenyl, p-nitrophenyl, and p-formylphenyl groups at the 1-position of the azaBODIPY core were synthesized by mixed condensation of two different nitrochalcones in n-butanol in the presence of CH₃COONH₄ at reflux followed by complexation with BF₃·OEt₂. The mixed condensation of nitrochalcones resulted in the formation of three different dipyrromethenes, which was treated with BF₃·OEt₂ to afford the desired monofunctionalized tetraarylazaBODIPYs in 30-36% yields. To demonstrate the application of monofunctionalized tetraarylazaBODIPYs, we reacted monoformyl functionalized tetraarylazaBODIPY with excess pyrrole to afford mono-dipyrromethanyl-substituted tetraarylazaBODIPY, which was used as a key precursor to prepare novel covalently linked azaBODIPY-based conjugates. The mono-dipyrromethanyl azaBODIPY was in situ oxidized with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone and either reacted with BF₃·OEt₂ to afford azaBODIPY-BODIPY conjugates or reacted with metal salt such as Pd(acac)₂ to afford azaBODIPY-Pd(II)dipyrrin conjugates. Alternately, dipyrromethanyl-substituted azaBODIPY was condensed with dipyrromethane dicarbinol or 16-oxatripyrrane under mild acid catalyzed conditions followed by oxidation and chromatographic purification to afford azaBODIPY-porphyrin or azaBODIPY-oxasmaragdyrin conjugates, respectively. The photophysical studies on conjugates revealed that azaBODIPY is a good energy acceptor and invoked the possibility of energy transfer from the donor to acceptor in covalently linked conjugates.

Polymer-Bound 4-Pyridyl-5-hydroxyethyl-thiazole Fluorescent Chemosensors for the Detection of Organophosphate Nerve Agent Simulants

Fluorescent sensors have been synthesized for organophosphate nerve agent detection. The resulting 4-pyridyl-5-hydroxyethyl structures react with organophosphate nerve agent simulants such as diethylchlorophosphate and diisopropylfluorophosphate and cyclize to form a dihydroquinolizinium ring that results in an increased fluorescence response to long-wave UV excitation. These sensors have been functionalized with monomeric substitutions that allow for covalent incorporation into a polymer matrix for organophosphate detection to develop a fieldable sensor. In addition, inclusion of silicon dioxide into the polymer matrix eliminated false-positive responses from mineral acids, greatly advancing this class of sensors.

Aggregation-Induced Emission and White Luminescence from a Combination of π-Conjugated Donor-Acceptor Organic Luminogens

Two new star-shaped phenyl- and triazine-core based donor-acceptor (D-A) type conjugated molecules bearing triphenylamine end-capped arms were synthesized and characterized as imminent organic optoelectronic materials. Photophysical properties of the compounds were explored systematically via spectroscopic and theoretical methods. Because of the presence of donor-acceptor interactions, these luminogens display multifunctional properties, for instance, high extinction coefficient, large stokes shift, and pronounced solvatochromic effect. The compounds also exhibited phenomenon known as aggregation-induced emission on formation of nano-aggregates in the tetrahydrofuran-water mixture. The aggregate formation was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering analyses. Moreover, by controlling the electron withdrawing ability of the acceptor, complementary emissive fluorophores (blue and yellow) were achieved. These two complementary colors together span the entire range of visible spectrum (400-800 nm) and therefore when mixed in a requisite proportion generate white light in solution phase. These findings have potential for the progress of new organic white light radiating materials for applications in lighting and display devices.

Effect of substituents on Stokes shift of BODIPY and its application in designing bioimaging probes

BODIPY-based probes have excellent fluorescence properties. However, small Stokes shifts approximately 5-15 nm greatly affect their detection sensitivity. In this study, we compared the Stokes shifts of reported BODIPY-based probes with various of substituents, and found that the phenyl groups on the specific position of BODIPY core could expand the Stokes shift of BODIPY-based probes, and methoxy groups on these phenyl substituents could enhance such effects. Then, by quantum chemical calculations, we found that the number of methoxy groups might also have obvious effect on the Stokes shift of BODIPY. Taking nitric oxide (NO) as analyte, 4,4-difluoro-8-(3,4-diaminophenyl)-3,5-bis(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indancene (DMOPB) with diaminophenyl substituents has been designed and synthesized. Compared with monomethoxy-phenyl substituted BODIPY-based probes (MOPBs) in our previous work, Stokes shift of DMOPB was expanded by 10 nm when using dimethoxyphenyl instead of monomethoxyphenyl, which is basically consistent with the quantum chemistry calculation of 11 nm. DMOPB can react with NO in only 2 min to form the triazole DMOPB-T with a fluorescence quantum yield of 0.32. An excellent linear relationship was observed in the range of NO concentration from 0.5 μM to 4 μM and the detection limit was 1 nM. The experimental results indicate that DMOPB with high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, low toxicity and dark background can be a great candidate for imaging NO in cells and tissues. Considering the lack of practical way to increase Stokes shift of small-molecule fluorescent probes based on specific fluorophore, the proposed strategy has great potential for the designing of probes with large Stokes shift.

Fluoride anion sensing mechanism of a BODIPY-linked hydrogen-bonding probe

The sensing mechanism of a fluoride-anion probe BODIPY-amidothiourea (1c) has been elucidated through the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. The theoretical study indicates that in the DMSO/water mixtures the fluorescent sensing has been regulated by the fluoride complex that formed between the probe 1c/two water molecules and the fluoride anion, and the excited-state intermolecular hydrogen bond (H-B) plays an important role in the fluoride sensing mechanism. In the first excited state, the H-Bs of the fluoride complex 1cFH₂ are overall strengthened, which induces the weak fluorescence emission. In addition, molecular orbital analysis demonstrates that 1cFH₂ has more obvious intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character in the S₁ state than 1cH₂ formed between the probe 1c and two water molecules, which also gives reason to the weaker fluorescence intensity of 1cFH₂ . Further, our calculated UV-vis absorbance and fluorescence spectra are in accordance with the experimental measurements. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

One-Pot Synthesis of a Mono-O,B,N-strapped BODIPY Derivative Displaying Bright Fluorescence in the Solid State

Tin(IV) catalysis allows isolation of a boron dipyrromethene derivative bearing a solitary strap around the boron center. The conditions favor internal cyclization without contamination by side products and provide high yields of product in good purity. A phenolate-based strap imposes chirality and causes geometrical distortion of the dipyrrin. Relatively strong fluorescence is observed for single crystals, evaporated films, and adsorbed layers. Single-crystal absorption and emission spectra resemble those observed from solution with contributions from a dimer.

Synthesis and Properties of Benzothieno[b]-Fused BODIPY Dyes

Two benzothieno[b]-fused BODIPYs, BT-BODIPY and BBT-BODIPY, in which one parent BODIPY core is fused with one and two benzothieno rings, respectively, were synthesized from BODIPYs substituted with 2-(methylsulfinyl)phenyl at the β-position. The first H2SO4-induced cyclization and deborylation afforded benzothieno[b]-fused dipyrrin derivatives, which can easily complex with BF3·OEt2 to form the desired benzothieno[b]-fused BODIPYs. It was revealed that the fusion of the benzothieno ring is more effective at extending conjugation than simple attachment of the 2-(methylthio)phenyl substituent, which presumably results from conformational restriction. Compared with the corresponding unstrained SPh-BODIPY and BSPh-BODIPY, which contain one and two 2-(methylthio)phenyl groups at the β-position, BT-BODIPY and BBT-BODIPY display red shifted absorption, increased absorptivity, and fluorescence efficiency. Furthermore, the ring fusion is also helpful to increase stability of the formed cation in BBT-BODIPY. Thus, BBT-BODIPY exhibits very intriguing properties, such as intense absorption and emission in the red region, very sharp emission spectra, and reversible oxidation and reduction potentials.

Tailoring the Solid-State Fluorescence Emission of BODIPY Dyes by meso Substitution

4,4-Difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) derivatives bearing varied substituents at the meso position (i.e., CF3 , CH3 , COOR, CHO, CN, Cl, iPr) were synthesized to elucidate the structure-property relationships that give rise to emissive J-aggregates. Several new BODIPY derivatives can be added to the previously reported 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-trifluoromethyl derivative to the list of those forming J-aggregates, in addition to other dyes that are emissive in the solid state without forming J-aggregates.

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) of pyridyl-enamido-based organoboron luminophores

A new family of pyridyl-enamido-based organoboron complexes (Borepy1–4) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties were developed. They show very weak fluorescence in low-viscosity organic solvents and exhibit intense fluorescence in high-viscosity solvents or in their aggregate/solid states. X-ray crystallographic analysis shows that the weak intermolecular interactions by fixing the molecular conformations of Borepy1–4 are responsible for intense fluorescence in the solid state. TD-DFT calculations show that the maximum absorption bands for Borepy1–4 can be easily tuned.

High solid-state luminescence in propeller-shaped AIE-active pyridine–ketoiminate–boron complexes
