Abstract
The catalytic enantioselective Michael addition of α,β-unsaturated ketones with malononitrile was well established using rare-earth metal amides RE[N(SiMe3)2]3 (RE = Y, Eu, Sm, Nd, La) with chiral phenoxy-functionalized TsDPEN ligands. The combination of lanthanum amide La[N(SiMe3)2]3 and chiral TsDPEN ligand H3L1 [H3L1 = N-((1R,2R)-2-((3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)amino)-1,2-diphenylethyl)-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide] in a 1:1.5 molar ratio was proved to be the optimal partner in THF, which provided the desired β-carbonyl dinitriles in excellent yields and good to high enantioselectivities after 12 h at -15 °C.

Abstract
Under the acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) reaction condition, the C3-vinyl groups of cinchona alkaloids readily react with each other to form a C-C bond. A novel type of cinchona alkaloid polymers was synthesized from dimeric cinchona squaramides using the Hoveyda-Grubbs’ second-generation catalysts (HG2) by means of ADMET reaction. The chiral polymers, containing cinchona squaramide moieties in their main chains, were subsequently employed as catalysts for the enantioselective Michael reaction to give the corresponding chiral adducts in high yields with excellent enantioselectivity and diastereoselectivity. Both enantiomers from the asymmetric Michael reaction were distinctively prepared while using the polymeric catalysts, possessing pseudoenantiomeric structures. The catalysts were readily recovered from the reaction mixture and recycled several times due to the insolubility of the cinchona-based squaramide polymers.

Abstract
A rosin-derived bifunctional squaramide catalyzed asymmetric Michael addition of malononitrile with chalcones was discovered. This protocol provides a methodology for the facile synthesis of chiral γ-cyano carbonyl compounds in high yields and enantioselectivities (up to 99% yield and 90% ee) with a lower catalyst loading (0.3 mol%). The predominant R-configured adducts were obtained by this organocatalystic reaction, according to the experimental findings.

Abstract
An unprecedented enantioselective dissymmetric 1,4- and 1,2-addition of malononitrile to a keto-bisenone followed by an oxa-Michael addition cascade to trap the in situ generated unstable tertiary alcohol have been developed. The quinine-derived amino-squaramide bifunctional organocatalyst worked efficiently and provides the oxa-spiro-[4,4]-nonanes in good yields and excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities (up to 99:1 dr and 99% ee). Notably, a complete chemoselective addition of a methylene unit to an aliphatic-tethered enone over the aromatic-tethered enone was observed.

Abstract
We have synthesized novel chiral polymers containing a cinchona-based squaramide in the main chain. We designed a novel cinchona squaramide dimer that contains two cinchona squaramide units connected by diamines. The olefinic double bonds in the cinchona squaramide dimer were used for Mizoroki-Heck (MH) polymerization with aromatic diiodides. The MH polymerization of the cinchona squaramide dimer and aromatic diiodide proceeded well to give the corresponding chiral polymers in good yields. The catalytic activity of the chiral polymers was investigated for asymmetric Michael addition reactions. The effect of the squaramide structure of the polymeric catalyst on the catalytic performance is discussed in detail. We have surveyed the influence of the chiral polymer structure on the catalytic activity and enantioselectivity of the asymmetric reaction. The asymmetric Michael addition of β-ketoesters to nitroolefins was successfully catalyzed by polymeric cinchona squaramide organocatalysts to obtain the corresponding Michael adducts in good yields with excellent enantio- and diastereoselectivities. The polymeric catalysts were insoluble in commonly used organic solvents and easily recovered from the reaction mixture and reused several times without the loss of catalytic activity.

Abstract
N,N'-Dialkylbarbituric acids as cyclic malonamide donors were successfully used in the enantioselective Michael addition reaction of enones. Using cinchona alkaloid-based bifunctional squaramide as an organocatalyst, this Michael reaction of N,N'-di-tert-butylbarbituric acid with various enones features a highly enantioselective (91-99% ee) production of the corresponding optically active 5-substituted barbituric acid derivatives. The transformations of the Michael product for the barbituric acid structural unit were realized in two ways, deprotection to remove the N-tert-butyl group and alkylation to produce 5,5-disubstituted barbituric acid derivatives.

Abstract
A pair of enantioselective switchable bifunctional catalysts are shown to promote a range of conjugate addition reactions in up to 95 : 5 e.r. and 95% conversion. Each catalyst can be switched OFF using conditions that switch the other catalyst ON. Catalyst ON : OFF ratios of up to 98 : 2 and 1 : 99 were achieved, with a ratio of reaction rates of up to 16 : 1 between the ON and OFF states, maintained over complete ON-OFF-ON and OFF-ON-OFF cycles. However, simultaneous operation of the catalyst pair in the same reaction vessel, which in principle could allow product handedness to be switched by simple E-Z isomerisation of the catalyst pair, was unsuccessful. In this first generation complementary pair of enantioselective switchable organocatalysts, the OFF state of one catalyst inhibits the ON state of the other.

Abstract
An enantioselective (52–98% ee) Michael addition between cyclic β-diones and α,β-unsaturated enones was established in the presence of quinine-based primary amine or squaramide. A variety of cinnamones were smoothly converted into the desired 3,4-dihydropyrans in moderate to high yields (63–99%). Chalcones were also suitable acceptors and gave rise to the expected adducts in satisfactory yields (31–99%). The resulting adducts readily underwent further modification to form fused 4H-pyran or 2,3-dihydrofuran.

Abstract
Masked acyl cyanide (MAC) reagents are shown to be effective umpolung synthons for enantioselective Michael addition to substituted enones. The reactions are catalyzed by chiral squaramides and afford adducts in high yields (90-99%) and with excellent enantioselectivities (85-98%). The addition products are unmasked to produce dicyanohydrins that, upon treatment with a variety of nucleophiles, provide γ-keto acids, esters, and amides. The use of this umpolung synthon has enabled, in enantiomerically enriched form, the first total synthesis of the prenylated phenol (+)-fornicin C.
