Abstract
AbstractThe benzofuranone structure is important in many fields, such as natural products, pharmaceuticals, building blocks, antioxidants, and dyes. The efficient synthesis and transformation of benzofuranones have attracted great attention in organic synthesis. They can be synthesized by the Friedel–Crafts reaction and intramolecular dehydration ring-closing and transition-metal-catalyzed reactions, among others. Their direct utilization in the preparation of other functional molecules further enhance their application. Due to their low pK
a value and easy enolization, the transformation of benzofuranones via C(3)–H bond functionalization has been a hot issue since 2010. Herein, we highlight advances in the synthesis of benzofuranones and their transformation via C–H functionalization. Other transformations related to benzofuranones are also discussed.1 Introduction2 Synthesis of Benzofuranones3 C–H Functionalization of Benzofuranones4 Other Types of Reactions of Benzofuranones5 Conclusion and Outlook

Abstract
The generalization of related asymmetric processes in organocatalyzed reactions is an ongoing challenge due to subtle, noncovalent interactions that drive selectivity. The lack of transferability is often met with a largely empirical approach to optimizing catalyst structure and reaction conditions. This has led to the development of diverse structural catalyst motifs and inspired unique design principles in this field. Bifunctional hydrogen bond donor (HBD) catalysis exemplifies this in which a broad collection of enantioselective transformations has been successfully developed. Herein, we describe the use of data science methods to connect catalyst and substrate structural features of an array of reported enantioselective bifunctional HBD catalysis through an iterative statistical modeling process. The computational parameters used to build the correlations are mechanism-specific based on the proposed transition states, which allows for analysis into the noncovalent interactions responsible for asymmetric induction. The resulting statistical models also allow for extrapolation to out-of-sample examples to provide a prediction platform that can be used for future applications of bifunctional hydrogen bond donor catalysis. Finally, this multireaction workflow presents an opportunity to build statistical models unifying various modes of activation relevant to asymmetric organocatalysis.

Abstract
The emerging field of artificial photoswitchable catalysis has recently shown striking examples of functional light-responsive systems allowing for dynamic control of activity and selectivity in organocatalysis and metal-catalysed transformations. While our group has already disclosed systems featuring first generation molecular motors as the switchable central core, a design based on second generation molecular motors is lacking. Here, the syntheses of two bifunctionalised molecular switches based on a photoresponsive tetrasubstituted alkene core are reported. They feature a thiourea substituent as hydrogen-donor moiety in the upper half and a basic dimethylamine group in the lower half. This combination of functional groups offers the possibility for application of these molecules in photoswitchable catalytic processes. The light-responsive central cores were synthesized by a Barton-Kellogg coupling of the prefunctionalized upper and lower halves. Derivatization using Buchwald-Hartwig amination and subsequent introduction of the thiourea substituent afforded the target compounds. Control of catalytic activity in the Michael addition reaction between (E)-3-bromo-β-nitrostyrene and 2,4-pentanedione is achieved upon irradiation of stable-(E) and stable-(Z) isomers of the bifunctional catalyst 1. Both isomers display a decrease in catalytic activity upon irradiation to the metastable state, providing systems with the potential to be applied as ON/OFF catalytic photoswitches.

Abstract
The first highly E- and enantioselective allylic alkylation of prochiral carbon nucleophiles with 1,2-disubstituted allylic carbonates is reported. The key is the ability of modular ion-paired chiral ligands to simultaneously control the E/Z selectivity and enantioselectivity.

Abstract
A new method for the preparation of highly functionalized β-enamino diones has been developed. The protocol involves an initial self-catalyzed Mannich-type reaction of enolizable cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyls to nitrones, followed by a spontaneous intramolecular reorganization of the resulting nonisolated hydroxylamine to enamino derivatives. These compounds retain the features of unnatural α-amino acids. The ease of preparation makes them attractive intermediates for the synthesis of peptidomimetics, polyheterocycles, and other multifunctional compounds. All experimental results have been efficiently rationalized by in silico studies at the M06-2X level of theory, and a valid mechanistic pathway has been proposed.
