A Comprehensive Review on Water Quality Monitoring Devices: Materials Advances, Current Status, and Future Perspective

Water quality monitoring has become more critical in recent years to ensure the availability of clean and safe water from natural aquifers and to understand the evolution of water contaminants across time and space. The conventional water monitoring techniques comprise of sample collection, preservation, preparation, tailed by laboratory testing and analysis with cumbersome wet chemical routes and expensive instrumentation. Despite the high accuracy of these methods, the high testing costs, laborious procedures, and maintenance associated with them don't make them lucrative for end end-users and field testing. As the participation of ultimate stakeholders, that is, common man for water quality and quantity can play a pivotal role in ensuring the sustainability of our aquifers, thus it is essential to develop and deploy portable and user-friendly technical systems for monitoring water sources in real-time or on-site. The present review emphasizes here on possible approaches including optical (absorbance, fluorescence, colorimetric, X-ray fluorescence, chemiluminescence), electrochemical (ASV, CSV, CV, EIS, and chronoamperometry), electrical, biological, and surface-sensing (SPR and SERS), as candidates for developing such platforms. The existing developments, their success, and bottlenecks are discussed in terms of various attributes of water to escalate the essentiality of water quality devices development meeting ASSURED criterion for societal usage. These platforms are also analyzed in terms of their market potential, advancements required from material science aspects, and possible integration with IoT solutions in alignment with Industry 4.0 for environmental application.

Simple SPR-based colorimetric sensor to differentiate Mg2+ and Ca2+ in aqueous solutions

L-tryptophan functionalized AgNPs were successfully fabricated using a one-pot synthesis method and assessed as a colorimetric probe for rapid and accurate determination of Mg²⁺ ions. The developed sensor showed a selective response towards Mg²⁺ with no interference from Ca²⁺ in the wide concentration range of 1-200 µM. The sensor's response was optimized in the pH range of 9-10, which can be attributed to the protonation of amine groups and their interaction with Mg²⁺ ions. The stability and selectivity of the sensor were examined in different salt (NaCl) and other metal ions, respectively. The L-tryptophan-AgNPs sensor detected Mg²⁺ with the limit of detection of 3 µM, which is way lower than the concentration range of magnesium in human serum (0.75-1.05 mM). The recovery values of the developed sensor were in the range of 96-102% for the determination of Mg²⁺ in urine samples. The obtained performances proved the potential application of the developed sensor for clinical diagnostic of Mg²⁺ ions where an accurate and rapid response is needed.

Metallic-Nanoparticle-Based Sensing: Utilization of Mixed-Ligand Monolayers

The last two decades have seen great advancements in fundamental understanding and applications of metallic nanoparticles stabilized by mixed-ligand monolayers. Identifying and controlling the organization of multiple ligands in the nanoparticle monolayer has been studied, and its effect on particle properties has been examined. Mixed-ligand protected particles have shown advantages over monoligand protected particles in fields such as catalysis, self-assembly, imaging, and drug delivery. In this Review, the use of mixed-ligand monolayer protected nanoparticles for sensing applications will be examined. This is the first time this subject is examined as a whole. Mixed-ligand nanoparticle-based sensors are revealed to be divided into four groups, each of which will be discussed. The first group consists of ligands that work cooperatively to improve the sensors' properties. In the second group, multiple ligands are utilized for sensing multiple analytes. The third group combines ligands used for analyte recognition and signal production. In the final group, a sensitive, but unstable, functional ligand is combined with a stabilizing ligand. The Review will conclude by discussing future challenges and potential research directions for this promising subject.

Label-free determination of adenosine and mercury ions according to force mapping-based force-to-color variety

Single molecule force spectroscopy based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a simple and sensitive technique to probe molecular recognition forces. Here we demonstrate that visual color-intensity analysis of single molecule force mapping (SMFM) can be employed as a quick and convenient force-to-color detection towards the presence of various dissolved analytes in very low concentrations. To achieve this aim, analyte-specific single-strand DNA aptamers are first bound to an AFM tip. The measured forces between the functionalized tip and a suitable substrate, namely either a clean surface or a surface functionalized with the complementary DNA oligomer, change when a critical concentration of the analyte is reached. The current SMFM-based visual biosensing shows improved developments like higher sensitivity, lower detection limits, quicker detection, and much simple readout. The color of the obtained force maps reveals the force intensity, which gives a highly selective and immediate visual force-to-color response towards the presence of adenosine (above ∼0.1 nM) and Hg²⁺ (∼10 pM). The strategies shown in this work will be helpful to design and fabricate aptasensors for biomedical analysis as well as to understand the molecular interactions between DNA hybridization.

Controlled Vectorial Electron Transfer and Photoelectrochemical Applications of Layered Relay/Photosensitizer-Imprinted Au Nanoparticle Architectures on Electrodes

Two configurations of molecularly imprinted bis-aniline-bridged Au nanoparticles (NPs) for the specific binding of the electron acceptor N,N'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium (MV(2+) ) and for the photosensitizer Zn(II)-protoporphyrin IX (Zn(II)-PP-IX) are assembled on electrodes, and the photoelectrochemical features of the two configurations are discussed. Configuration I includes the MV(2+) -imprinted Au NPs matrix as a base layer, on which the Zn(II)-PP-IX-imprinted Au NPs layer is deposited, while configuration II consists of a bilayer corresponding to the reversed imprinting order. Irradiation of the two electrodes in the presence of a benzoquinone/benzohydroquinone redox probe yields photocurrents of unique features: (i) Whereas configuration I yields an anodic photocurrent, the photocurrent generated by configuration II is cathodic. (ii) The photocurrents obtained upon irradiation of the imprinted electrodes are substantially higher as compared to the nonimprinted surfaces. The high photocurrents generated by the imprinted Au NPs-modified electrodes are attributed to the effective loading of the imprinted matrices with the MV(2+) and Zn(II)-PP-IX units and to the effective charge separation proceeding in the systems. The directional anodic/cathodic photocurrents are rationalized in terms of vectorial electron transfer processes dictated by the imprinting order and by the redox potentials of the photosensitizer/electron acceptor units associated with the imprinted sites in the two configurations.

Molecularly imprinted plasmonic nanosensor for selective SERS detection of protein biomarkers

Molecularly imprinted plasmonic nanosensor has been prepared via the rational design of an ultrathin polymer layer on the surface of gold nanorods imprinted with the target protein. This nanosensor enabled selective fishing-out of the target protein biomarker even from a complex real sample such as human serum. Sensitive SERS detection of the protein biomarkers with a strong Raman enhancement was achieved by formation of protein imprinted gold nanorods aggregates, stacking of protein imprinted gold nanorods onto a glass plate, or self-assembly of protein imprinted gold nanorods into close-packed array. High specificity and sensitivity of this method were demonstrated with a detection limit of at least 10(-8)mol/L for the target protein. This could provide a promising alternative for the currently used immunoassays and fluorescence detection, and offer an ultrasensitive, non-destructive, and label-free technique for clinical diagnosis applications.

Layered Metal Nanoparticle Structures on Electrodes for Sensing, Switchable Controlled Uptake/Release, and Photo-electrochemical Applications

Layered metal nanoparticle (NP) assemblies provide highly porous and conductive composites of unique electrical and optical (plasmonic) properties. Two methods to construct layered metal NP matrices are described, and these include the layer-by-layer deposition of NPs, or the electropolymerization of monolayer-functionalized NPs, specifically thioaniline-modified metal NPs. The layered NP composites are used as sensing matrices through the use of electrochemistry or surface plasmon resonance (SPR) as transduction signals. The crosslinking of the metal NP composites with molecular receptors, or the imprinting of molecular recognition sites into the electropolymerized NP matrices lead to selective and chiroselective sensing interfaces. Furthermore, the electrosynthesis of redox-active, imprinted, bis-aniline bridged Au NP composites yields electrochemically triggered "sponges" for the switchable uptake and release of electron-acceptor substrates, and results in conductive surfaces of electrochemically controlled wettability. Also, photosensitizer-relay-crosslinked Au NP composites, or electrochemically polymerized layered semiconductor quantum dot/metal NP matrices on electrodes, are demonstrated as functional nanostructures for photoelectrochemical applications.

Improvement of DNA recognition through molecular imprinting: hybrid oligomer imprinted polymeric nanoparticles (oligoMIP NPs)

Here we describe the production and characterization of oligoMIP NPs in which we have preorganized the oligonucleotide binding by molecular imprinting technology.

Highly selective monitoring of metals by using ion-imprinted polymers

Ion imprinting technology is one of the most promising tools in separation and purification sciences because of its high selectivity, good stability, simplicity and low cost. It has been mainly used for selective removal, preconcentration, sensing and few miscellaneous fields. In this review article, recent methodologies in the synthesis of IIPs have been discussed. For several applications, different parameters of IIP including complexing and leaching agent, pH, relative selectivity coefficient, detection limit and adsorption capacity have been evaluated and an attempt has been made to generalize. Biomedical applications mostly include selective removal of toxic metals from human blood plasma and urine samples. Wastewater treatment involves selective removal of highly toxic metal ions like Hg(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), As(V), etc. Preconcentration covers recovery of economically important metal ions such as gold, silver, platinum and palladium. It also includes selective preconcentration of lanthanides and actinides. In sensing, various IIP-based sensors have been fabricated for detection of toxic metal ions. This review article includes almost all metal ions based on the ion-imprinted polymer. At the end, the future outlook section presents the discussion on the advancement, corresponding merits and the need of continued research in few specific areas. Visualization and quantification of neurochemicals with gold nanoparticles: opportunities and challenges

Gold nanoparticle (Au-NP)-based colorimetric assays offer new opportunitites for the visualization and quantification of neurochemicals involved in physiological and pathological processes due to their high sensitivity, designability, and low technical demands. In this Research News, we systematically review the advances on the development of Au-NP-based colorimetric methods for visualization and quantification of neurochemicals and their potential applications for effectively monitoring neurochemicals in the central nervous system. By integration of the favourable surface chemistry with the high extinction coefficient of Au-NPs, some new principles and methods could be developed for the quantification of neurochemicals involved in brain functions. New strategies to design the surface chemistry of Au-NPs, along with the key challenges yet to be addressed to achieve online visualization and quantification of neurochemicals in the central nervous system, are illustrated and discussed. The questions opened here should inspire future investigations and lead to discoveries that continue the development of the effective analytical protocols based on Au-NPs for neurochemical visualization and quantification.

DNA sensors and aptasensors based on the hemin/G-quadruplex-controlled aggregation of Au NPs in the presence of L-cysteine

L-cysteine induces the aggregation of Au nanoparticles (NPs), resulting in a color transition from red to blue due to interparticle plasmonic coupling in the aggregated structure. The hemin/G-quadruplex horseradish peroxidase-mimicking DNAzyme catalyzes the aerobic oxidation of L-cysteine to cystine, a process that inhibits the aggregation of the NPs. The degree of inhibition of the aggregation process is controlled by the concentration of the DNAzyme in the system. These functions are implemented to develop sensing platforms for the detection of a target DNA, for the analysis of aptamer-substrate complexes, and for the analysis of L-cysteine in human urine samples. A hairpin DNA structure that includes a recognition site for the DNA analyte and a caged G-quadruplex sequence, is opened in the presence of the target DNA. The resulting self-assembled hemin/G-quadruplex acts as catalyst that controls the aggregation of the Au NPs. Also, the thrombin-binding aptamer folds into a G-quadruplex nanostructure upon binding to thrombin. The association of hemin to the resulting G-quadruplex aptamer-thrombin complex leads to a catalytic label that controls the L-cysteine-mediated aggregation of the Au NPs. The hemin/G-qaudruplex-controlled aggregation of Au NPs process is further implemented for visual and spectroscopic detection of L-cysteine concentration in urine samples.

Optical fiber sensor for the detection of tetracycline using surface plasmon resonance and molecular imprinting

We present a simple and highly selective optical fiber sensor for the detection of tetracycline in foodstuffs by using the combination of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and a molecular imprinted polymer (MIP) matrix. The sensor is fabricated first by coating a thin film of silver metal over the unclad portion of an optical fiber, and then preparing a molecular imprinting of the target molecules over the metal coated region. The MIP creates several binding sites/nano-cavities which have the complementary shape and functional groups of the target molecules on its surface. The sensor works on the wavelength modulation scheme in which the shift in resonance wavelength is measured with respect to the change in tetracycline concentration. Two kinds of tetracycline, tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and oxy-tetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) have been selected as the imprinting molecules because these possess similar structures. The presence of tetracycline samples in the vicinity of the sensing region causes the interaction between binding sites and target molecules which results in the change in the dielectric properties of the sensing surface, causing the shift in the SPR spectrum towards the red region. The selectivity of the sensor for dissimilar compounds, and cross-selectivity between TC and OTC, has been tested. The reusability of the sensor has also been checked. The present sensor is suitable for commercialization for the detection of tetracycline in food as it has several advantageous features such as low cost, ease of handling, a miniaturized probe, fast response, high selectivity, reusability and the possibility of online monitoring and remote sensing.

Nanomaterials enhanced surface plasmon resonance for biological and chemical sensing applications

The main challenge for all electrical, mechanical and optical sensors is to detect low molecular weight (less than 400 Da) chemical and biological analytes under extremely dilute conditions. Surface plasmon resonance sensors are the most commonly used optical sensors due to their unique ability for real-time monitoring the molecular binding events. However, their sensitivities are insufficient to detect trace amounts of small molecular weight molecules such as cancer biomarkers, hormones, antibiotics, insecticides, and explosive materials which are respectively important for early-stage disease diagnosis, food quality control, environmental monitoring, and homeland security protection. With the rapid development of nanotechnology in the past few years, nanomaterials-enhanced surface plasmon resonance sensors have been developed and used as effective tools to sense hard-to-detect molecules within the concentration range between pmol and amol. In this review article, we reviewed and discussed the latest trend and challenges in engineering and applications of nanomaterials-enhanced surface plasmon resonance sensors (e.g., metallic nanoparticles, magnetic nanoparticles, carbon-based nanomaterials, latex nanoparticles and liposome nanoparticles) for detecting "hard-to-identify" biological and chemical analytes. Such information will be viable in terms of providing a useful platform for designing future ultrasensitive plasmonic nanosensors.

Molecularly imprinted aptamers of gold nanoparticles for the enzymatic inhibition and detection of thrombin

We prepared thrombin-binding aptamer-conjugated gold nanoparticles (TBA-Au NPs) through a molecularly imprinted (MP) approach, which provide highly efficient inhibition activity toward the polymerization of fibrinogen. Au NPs (diameter, 13 nm), 15-mer thrombin-binding aptamer (TBA(15)) with different thymidine linkers, and 29-mer thrombin-binding aptamer (TBA(29)) with different thymidine linkers (Tn) in the presence of thrombin (Thr) as a template were used to prepare MP-Thr-TBA(15)/TBA(29)-Tn-Au NPs. Thrombin molecules were then removed from Au NPs surfaces by treating with 100 mM Tris-NaOH (pH ca. 13.0) to form MP-TBA(15)/TBA(29)-Tn-Au NPs. The length of the thymidine linkers and TBA density on Au NPs surfaces have strong impact on the orientation, flexibility, and stability of MP-TBA(15)/TBA(29)-Tn-Au NPs, leading to their stronger binding strength with thrombin. MP-TBA(15)/TBA(29)-T(15)-Au NPs (ca. 42 TBA(15) and 42 TBA(29) molecules per Au NP; 15-mer thymidine on aptamer terminal) provided the highest binding affinity toward thrombin with a dissociation constant of 5.2 × 10(-11) M. As a result, they had 8 times higher anticoagulant (inhibitory) potency relative to TBA(15)/TBA(29)-T(15)-Au NPs (prepared in the absence of thrombin). We further conducted thrombin clotting time (TCT) measurements in plasma samples and found that MP-TBA(15)/TBA(29)-T(15)-Au NPs had greater anticoagulation activity relative to four commercial drugs (heparin, argatroban, hirudin, and warfarin). In addition, we demonstrated that thrombin induced the formation of aggregates from MP-TBA(15)-T(15)-Au NPs and MP-TBA(29)-T(15)-Au NPs, thereby allowing the colorimetric detection of thrombin at the nanomolar level in serum samples. Our result demonstrates that our simple molecularly imprinted approach can be applied for preparing various functional nanomaterials to control enzyme activity and targeting important proteins.
