Abstract
We report a new family of hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC)-based helical nanographenes incorporating π-extended carbo[5]helicenes bearing an octagonal carbocycle. This family represents a new kind of highly distorted saddle-helix hybrid nanographenes. For the first time, the eight-membered ring becomes a constituent of both a carbo[5]helicene and a HBC and thus, the negative curvature is responsible for twisting both units. This novel chiral motif, namely, oct-[5]helicene results in the largest torsion angle recorded so far for a carbo[5]helicene (θ=79.5°), as it has been suggested by DFT-calculations and confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Consequently, the barriers of isomerization become exceptionally high for a [5]helicene unsubstituted in the fjord region since neither racemization nor decomposition were observed at 200 °C for 1 or 3 during 5 h. Therefore, racemic resolutions allowed subsequent chiroptical studies showing the ECD and CPL responses of this novel family of chiral nanographenes.

Abstract
A series of dihetero[8]helicenes have been systematically synthesized in enantiomerically enriched forms by utilizing the characteristic transformations of the organosulfur functionality. The synthetic route begins with assembling a ternaphthyl common synthetic intermediate from 2-naphthol and bissulfinylnaphthalene through an extended Pummerer reaction followed by facile multi-gram-scale resolution. The subsequent cyclization reactions into dioxa- and dithia[8]helicenes take place with excellent axial-to-helical chirality conversion. Dithia[8]helicene is further transformed into the nitrogen and the carbon analogs by replacing the two endocyclic sulfur atoms via SNAr-based skeletal reconstruction. The efficient systematic synthesis has enabled comprehensive evaluation of physical properties, which has clarified the effect of the endocyclic atoms on their structures and (chir)optical properties as well as the unexpected conformational stability of the common helical framework.

Abstract
Atropisomeric biaryl systems are privileged architectures used in asymmetric synthesis and pharmaceutical structures. We report that by simply removing a single-electron, the resistance of biaryls towards racemization is reduced dramatically. Even though the steric properties are unaltered, biaryl oxidation changes atropisomerization into a two step mechanism with considerably smaller activation barriers than closed-shell biaryls. The effect is general for a series of biaryls and helicenes studied and results from the dependence of frontier molecular orbital energies on biaryl conformation.

Abstract
Diquats with extremely high racemization barriers with ΔG≠theor of 233 kJ mol-1 at 180 °C are described. Reported configurational robustness is due to a combination of two structural features: the rigid o-xylylene tether connecting the nitrogen atoms and the presence of two substituents in the bay region of the bipyridinium scaffold. The straightforward synthesis of diquats, plus facile resolution and derivatization make them attractive for chiral application studies. This is demonstrated by: 1) synthesis of the first non-racemic diquat dyes with pronounced chiroptical properties, and 2) capability of diquats to interact stereospecifically with chiral molecules. This suggests potential for diquat derivatives to be used as chiral selectors in separation methods.

Abstract
Herein we propose a general mechanism for the racemization of [n]helicenes up to n = 24. It is a concerted process for n = 4-7, but a multi-step mechanism is followed for n≥ 8, involving 2n- 14 intermediates. The changes in the barriers are a delicate consequence of the steric hindrance and the π-interactions.

Abstract
We report an innovative synthetic route to linear extended diquats (linquats). Our approach is short and efficient and features a highly modular reaction sequence based on two-fold quaternization followed by the key intramolecular [2+2+2] alkyne cycloaddition. The physico-chemical properties of four new linquats were characterized by spectroscopic methods, X-ray crystallography, and electrochemistry complemented by information obtained from DFT calculations. Electron deficient N-heteroaromatic cations with linear extended diquat motif with high electron affinities have been recently recognized as attractive n-type semiconductors for chemical and biological sensing. Their advantageous redox properties such as very fast reversible electron transfers make the title compounds interesting for applications.

Abstract
Chirality induction phenomena attract attention because of their relevance to intermolecular interactions encountered in living matter. Usually, such effects are weak. However, enantiomers of a [6]helquat dye were found to induce exceptionally strong chirality in several achiral solvents containing nitrile groups. This effect was observable as an intense Raman optical activity (ROA) induced in acetonitrile, acetonitrile-d3, and liquid hydrogen cyanide solvents. The observation was verified by measurement of both helquat enantiomers which provided mirror image ROA spectra. Theoretical analysis indicated that the 532 nm laser excitation light was in a near resonance with electronic transitions of the dye, which made the effect observable in very dilute solutions (1 : 200 000 helquat to nitrile ratio) and thus the phenomenon can be generally useful in analytical chemistry.

Abstract
Helicenes are inherently chiral polyaromatic molecules composed of all-ortho fused benzene rings possessing a spring-like structure. Here, using a combination of density functional theory and tight-binding calculations, it is demonstrated that controlling the length of the helicene molecule by mechanically stretching or compressing the molecular junction can dramatically change the electronic properties of the helicene, leading to a tunable switching behavior of the conductance and thermopower of the junction with on/off ratios of several orders of magnitude. Furthermore, control over the helicene length and number of rings is shown to lead to more than an order of magnitude increase in the thermopower and thermoelectric figure-of-merit over typical molecular junctions, presenting new possibilities of making efficient thermoelectric molecular devices. The physical origin of the strong dependence of the transport properties of the junction is investigated, and found to be related to a shift in the position of the molecular orbitals.

Abstract
The enantioselective [2+2+2] cycloisomerisation of the aromatic triynes under nickel(0) catalysis to afford nonracemic [6]- and [7]helicene derivatives has been systematically studied. A collection of mono- and bidentate phosphines, phosphites, phosphinites and phosphinous amides possessing stereogenic units such as chiral centre, axis or plane (or their combinations) has been tested and axially chiral binaphthyl-derived monodentate MOP-type phosphine ligands were the optimal class of ligands. Nickel complexes of these ligands afforded nonracemic tetrahydro[6]helicene in up to 64% ee in a model reaction.
