Dynamics of photoconversion processes: the energetic cost of lifetime gain in photosynthetic and photovoltaic systems

The continued development of solar energy conversion technologies relies on an improved understanding of their limitations. In this review, we focus on a comparison of the charge carrier dynamics underlying the function of photovoltaic devices with those of both natural and artificial photosynthetic systems. The solar energy conversion efficiency is determined by the product of the rate of generation of high energy species (charges for solar cells, chemical fuels for photosynthesis) and the energy contained in these species. It is known that the underlying kinetics of the photophysical and charge transfer processes affect the production yield of high energy species. Comparatively little attention has been paid to how these kinetics are linked to the energy contained in the high energy species or the energy lost in driving the forward reactions. Here we review the operational parameters of both photovoltaic and photosynthetic systems to highlight the energy cost of extending the lifetime of charge carriers to levels that enable function. We show a strong correlation between the energy lost within the device and the necessary lifetime gain, even when considering natural photosynthesis alongside artificial systems. From consideration of experimental data across all these systems, the emprical energetic cost of each 10-fold increase in lifetime is 87 meV. This energetic cost of lifetime gain is approx. 50% greater than the 59 meV predicted from a simple kinetic model. Broadly speaking, photovoltaic devices show smaller energy losses compared to photosynthetic devices due to the smaller lifetime gains needed. This is because of faster charge extraction processes in photovoltaic devices compared to the complex multi-electron, multi-proton redox reactions that produce fuels in photosynthetic devices. The result is that in photosynthetic systems, larger energetic costs are paid to overcome unfavorable kinetic competition between the excited state lifetime and the rate of interfacial reactions. We apply this framework to leading examples of photovoltaic and photosynthetic devices to identify kinetic sources of energy loss and identify possible strategies to reduce this energy loss. The kinetic and energetic analyses undertaken are applicable to both photovoltaic and photosynthetic systems allowing for a holistic comparison of both types of solar energy conversion approaches.

Process Intensification of 2,2'-(4-Nitrophenyl) Dipyrromethane Synthesis with a SO3H-Functionalized Ionic Liquid Catalyst in Pickering-Emulsion-Based Packed-Bed Microreactors

A stable water-in-oil Pickering emulsion was fabricated with SO₃H-functionalized ionic liquid and surface-modified silica nanoparticles and used for 2,2'-(4-nitrophenyl) dipyrromethane synthesis in a packed-bed microreactor, exhibiting high reaction activity and product selectivity. The compartmentalized water droplets of the Pickering emulsion had an excellent ability to confine the ionic liquid against loss under continuous-flow conditions, and the excellent durability of the catalytic system without a significant decrease in the reaction efficiency and selectivity was achieved. Compared with the reaction performance of a liquid-liquid slug-flow microreactor and batch reactor, the Pickering-emulsion-based catalytic system showed a higher specific interfacial area between the catalytic and reactant phases, benefiting the synthesis of 2,2'-(4-nitrophenyl) dipyrromethane and resulting in a higher yield (90%). This work indicated that an increase in the contact of reactants with catalytic aqueous solution in a Pickering-emulsion-based packed-bed microreactor can greatly enhance the synthetic process of dipyrromethane, giving an excellent yield of products and a short reaction time. It was revealed that Pickering-emulsion-based packed-bed microreactors with the use of ionic liquids as catalysts for interfacial catalysis have great application potential in the process of intensification of organic synthesis.

Similar, Yet Different: Long-Range Metal-Metal Coupling and Electron-Transfer Processes in Metal-Free 5,10,15,20-Tetra(ruthenocenyl)porphyrin

The electronic structure, redox properties, and long-range metal-metal coupling in metal-free 5,10,15,20-tetra(ruthenocenyl)porphyrin (H₂TRcP) were probed by spectroscopic (NMR, UV-vis, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI)), electrochemical (cyclic voltammetry, CV, and differential pulse voltammetry, DPV), spectroelectrochemical, and chemical oxidation methods, as well as theoretical (density functional theory, DFT, and time-dependent DFT, TDDFT) approaches. It was demonstrated that the spectroscopic properties of H₂TRcP are significantly different from those in H₂TFcP (metal-free 5,10,15,20-tetra(ferrocenyl)porphyrin). Ruthenocenyl fragments in H₂TRcP have higher oxidation potentials than the ferrocene groups in the H₂TFcP complex. Similar to H₂TFcP, we were able to access and spectroscopically characterize the one- and two-electron oxidized mixed-valence states in the H₂TRcP system. DFT predicts that the porphyrin π-system stabilizes the [H₂TRcP]⁺ mixed-valence cation and prevents its dimerization, which is characteristic for ruthenocenyl systems. However, formation of the mixed-valence [H₂TRcP]²⁺ is significantly less reproducible than the formation of [H₂TRcP]⁺. DFT and TDDFT calculations suggest the ruthenocenyl fragment dominance in the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy region and the presence of the low-energy MLCT (Rc → porphyrin (π*)) transitions in the visible region with energies higher than the predominantly porphyrin-centered Q-bands.

Anionic Fluorinated Zn-porphyrin Combined with Cationic Endohedral Li-fullerene for Long-Lived Photoinduced Charge Separation with Low Energy Loss

Here we report an anionic meso-tetrakis(4-carboxymethylthio-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl) zinc porphyrin (ZnTF₄PPTC^4-) to form a supramolecular complex with a cationic lithium endohedral [60]fullerene (Li⁺@C₆₀). The supramolecular ZnTF₄PPTC^4-/Li⁺@C₆₀ complex formed by strong electrostatic attraction with a large binding constant generates a long-lived charge-separated (CS) state with low energy loss by photoinduced electron transfer from ZnTF₄PPTC^4- to Li⁺@C₆₀. The anionic fluorinated zinc porphyrin with high oxidation potential reduces the energy loss associated with the charge separation and enhances the energy level of the CS state. The energy level of the CS state determined by electrochemical measurements is at 0.94 eV, which is much higher than that of a similar supramolecular complex using an anionic meso-tetrakis(sulfonatophenyl) zinc porphyrin (ZnTPPS^4-) at 0.55 eV. Time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy demonstrates that ZnTF₄PPTC^4-/Li⁺@C₆₀ generates a long-lived CS state with a lifetime of 0.29 ms in a binary solvent of acetonitrile and chlorobenzene. The lifetime of the CS state is comparable to that of ZnTPPS^4-/Li⁺@C₆₀ in benzonitrile.

Two- and three-dimensional β,β′-N-heterocycle fused porphyrins: concise construction, singlet oxygen production and electro-catalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

A series of 2D and 3D porphyrins fused with N-heterocycles were prepared by palladium-catalyzed. Photophysical and electrochemical properties, 1O2 production and electrocatalytic HER behaviours of the representative porphyrins were investigated.

Directing energy transfer in Pt(bodipy)(mercaptopyrene) dyads

We report on the photophysical properties of three dyads that combine a 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (bodipy, BDP) and a mercaptopyrene (SPyr) dye ligand at a Pt(PEt3)2 fragment. σ-Bonding of the dyes to the Pt ion promotes intersystem crossing (ISC) via the external heavy atom effect. The coupling of efficient ISC with charge-transfer from the electron-rich mercaptopyrene to the electron-accepting BDP ligand (PB-CT) gives rise to a multitude of (potentially) emissive states. This culminates in the presence of four different emissions for the mono- and dinuclear complexes BPtSPyr and BPtSPyrSPtB with an unsubstituted BDP ligand and either a terminal 1-mercaptopyrene or a bridging pyrene-1,6-dithiolate ligand. Thus, in fluid solution, near IR emission at 724 nm from the 3PB-CT state is observed with a quantum yield of up to 15%. Excitation into the BDP-based 1ππ* or the pyrene-based 1ππ* band additionally trigger fluorescence and phosphorescence emissions from the BDP-centred 1ππ* and 3ππ* states. In frozen solution, at 77 K, phosphorescence from the pyrene ligand becomes the prominent emission channel, while PB-CT emission is absent. Alkylation of the BDP ligand in KBPtSPyr funnels all excitation energy into fluorescence and phosphorescence emissions from the KBDP ligand. The assignments of the various excited states and the deactivation cascades were probed by absorption and emission spectroscopy, transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical and UV/Vis/NIR spectroelectrochemical measurements, and by quantum chemical calculations. Our conclusions are further corroborated with the aid of suitable reference compounds comprising of just one chromophore. All dyads are triplet sensitizers and are able to generate singlet oxygen.

Imidazoporphyrins as supramolecular tectons: synthesis and self-assembly of zinc 2-(4-pyridyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-b]porphyrinate

First evidence of self-assembling of imidazoporphyrins is revealed with the example of zinc(ii) 5,10,15,20-tetramesityl-2-(4-pyridyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-b]porphyrin in the solid state and in solution.

Four different emissions from a Pt(Bodipy)(PEt3)2(S-Pyrene) dyad

A bodipy-Pt-mercaptopyrene diad emits from a pyrene-to-bodipy charge-transfer, the bodipy ¹ππ* and ³ππ* and the pyrene ³ππ* states.

Excitation-dependent electron exchange energy and electron transfer dynamics in a series of covalently tethered N,N-bis(4'-tert-butylbiphenyl-4-yl)aniline - [C60] fullerene dyads via varying π-conjugated spacers

Femtosecond time-resolved fluorescence and transient absorption studies are reported for three newly synthesized covalently linked N,N-bis(4'-tert-butylbiphenyl-4-yl)aniline (BBA) and pyrrolidinofullerenes (C60)-based donor-π conjugated bridge-acceptor dyads (D-B-A) as functions of the bridge length (7.1, 9.5 and 11.2 Å for Dyad-1, Dyad-2 and Dyad-3), dielectric constants of the medium and pump wavelengths. In polar solvent, ultrafast fluorescence quenching (kEET ≥ 2 × 1012 s-1) of the BBA moiety upon excitation of the BBA moiety (320 nm) is observed in the dyads and is assigned to a mechanism involving electron exchange energy transfer (EET) from 1BBA* to C60 followed by electron transfer from BBA to 1C60*. Cohesive rise and decay dynamics of conjugated BBA˙+-C60˙- anion pairs confirm the involvement of a distance independent adiabatic charge-separation (CS) process (kCS ≥ 2.2 × 1011 s-1) with near unity quantum efficiency (φCS ≥ 99.7%) and a distance-dependent non-adiabatic charge-recombination (CR) process [kCR ∼ (1010-108) s-1]. In contrast, excitation of the C60 moiety (λex = 430 to 700 nm) illustrates photoinduced electron transfer from BBA to 1C60*, involving non-adiabatic (diabatic) and distance-dependent CS (kCS in the range of 0.59-1.78 × 1011 s-1) with 98.86-99.6% (Dyad-3-Dyad-1) quantum efficiency and a CR process with kCR values [kCR ∼ (1010-108) s-1] up to three orders greater than kCS of the respective dyads. Both the processes, CS and CR, upon C60 excitation and the CR process upon BBA excitation show distance dependent rate constants with exponential factor β ≤ 0.5 Å-1, and electron transfer is concluded to occur through a covalently linked conjugated π bridge. Global and target analysis of fsTA data reveal the occurrence of two closely lying CS states, thermally hot (CShot) and thermally relaxed (CSeq) states, and two CR processes with two orders of different rate constants. Careful analysis of the kinetic and thermodynamic data allowed us to estimate the total reorganization energy and electronic coupling matrix (V), which decrease exponentially with distance. These novel features of the distance independent adiabatic CS process and the distance-dependent diabatic CR process upon donor excitation are due to extending the π-conjugation between BBA and C60. The demonstrated results may provide a benchmark in the design of light-harvesting molecular devices where ultrafast CS processes and long-lived CS states are essential requirements.

Post-synthetic methods for functionalization of imidazole-fused porphyrins

Several methods for the post-synthetic modification of imidazo[4,5-[Formula: see text]]porphyrins are reported. First, a synthetic approach to the isomeric difunctionalized porphyrins, containing two [Formula: see text]-fused 2-aryl-1[Formula: see text]-imidazole cycles at adjacent or opposite pyrrole rings of the macrocycle is developed. The core chemistry of this synthetic route is the transformation of 2-aryl-1[Formula: see text]-imidazo[4,5-[Formula: see text]]porphyrins into corresponding imidazodioxochlorins followed by Debus–Radziszewski condensation with aromatic aldehyde. Next, 2-(4-bromophenyl)-1[Formula: see text]-imidazo[4,5-[Formula: see text]]-5,10,15,20-tetramesitylporphyrin was transformed into useful carboxy- and phosphonato-substituted precursors for material chemistry according to palladium-catalyzed C–C and C–P bond forming reactions.

Coexistence of distinct intramolecular electron transfer pathways in polyoxometalate based molecular triads

Polyoxometalate (POM)-associated charge-separated states, formed by the photoinduced oxidation of a covalently attached photosensitizer and reduction of the POM, have attracted much attention due to the remarkable catalytic properties of the reduced POMs. However, short lifetimes of the POM-associated charge-separated state, which in some cases lead to the backward electron transfer being more rapid than the formation of the charge-separated state itself, are generally observed. Recently, we reported on the first example of a relative long-lived (τ = 470 ns) charge-separated state in a Ru(ii) bis(terpyridine)-POM molecular dyad. In this manuscript, further studies on extended molecular structures - two molecular triads - which contain an additional electron donor, phenothiazine (PTZ) or π-extended tetrathiafulvalene (exTTF), are discussed. We show that the excitation of the photosensitizer leads to the population of two distinct MLCT states, which differ in the distribution of excess electron density on the two distinct tpy ligands. These two MLCT states decay separately and, thus, constitute the starting points for distinct intramolecular electron-transfer pathways leading to the simultaneous population of two partially charge-separated states, i.e. PTZ˙+-Ru(tpy)2˙--POM and PTZ-RuIII(tpy)2-POM˙-. These independent decay pathways are unaffected by the choice of the electron donor. Thus, the initial charge distribution within the coordination environment of the photocenter determines the nature of the subsequent (partially) charge separated state that is formed in the triads. These results might open new avenues to design molecular interfaces, in which the directionality of electron transfer can be tuned by the choice of initial excitation.

Embedding heteroatoms: an effective approach to create porphyrin-based functional materials

Incorporation of planarized heteroatom(s) onto the porphyrin periphery is an effective approach to create porphyrin-based functional materials. In the last three decades, such an "embedding heteroatom" strategy has been actively explored in order to realize attractive electronic, optical, and electrochemical properties. This review aims to cover a variety of synthetic methodologies that have been developed for the construction of heteroatom-embedded porphyrins. Moreover, we also summarize their structure-property relationships as well as possible applications in various research fields including artificial photosynthesis, molecular engineering, organic electronics, and bioimaging.

Synthetically tuneable biomimetic artificial photosynthetic reaction centres that closely resemble the natural system in purple bacteria

Porphyrin-based photosynthetic reaction centre (PRC) mimics, ZnPQ-Q2HP-C60 and MP2Q-Q2HP-C60 (M = Zn or 2H), designed to have a similar special-pair electron donor and similar charge-separation distances, redox processes and photochemical reaction rates to those in the natural PRC from purple bacteria, have been synthesised and extensive photochemical studies performed. Mechanisms of electron-transfer reactions are fully investigated using femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. In benzonitrile, all models show picosecond-timescale charge-separations and the final singlet charge-separations with the microsecond-timescale. The established lifetimes are long compared to other processes in organic solar cells or other organic light harvesting systems. These rigid, synthetically flexible molecules provide the closest mimics to the natural PRC so far synthesised and present a future direction for the design of light harvesters with controllable absorption, redox, and kinetics properties.

Sulfur rich electron donors - formation of singlet versus triplet radical ion pair states featuring different lifetimes in the same conjugate

An unprecedented family of novel electron-donor acceptor conjugates based on fullerenes as electron acceptors, on one hand, and triphenyl amines as electron donors, on the other hand, have been synthesized and characterized in a variety of solvents using steady state absorption/emission as well as transient absorption spectroscopy. These are unprecedented in terms of their outcome of radical ion pair formation, that is, the singlet versus triplet excited state. This was corroborated by femto/nanosecond pump probe experiments and by molecular orbital calculations. Not only has the donor strength of the triphenylamines been systematically altered by appending one or two sulfur rich dithiafulvenes, but the presence of the latter changed the nature of the radical ion pair state. Importantly, depending on the excitation wavelength, that is, either where the fullerenes or where the triphenylamines absorb, short-lived or long-lived radical ion pair states, respectively, are formed. The short-lived component with a lifetime as short as 6 ps has singlet character and stems from a fullerene singlet excited state precursor. In contrast, the long-lived component has a lifetime of up to 130 ns in THF, has triplet character, and evolves from a triplet excited state precursor. Key in forming more than three orders of magnitude longer lived radical ion pair states is the presence of sulfur atoms, which enhance spin-orbit coupling and, in turn, intersystem crossing. Independent confirmation for the singlet versus triplet character came from temperature dependent measurements with a focus on the radical ion pair state lifetimes. Here, activation barriers of 2.4 and 10.0 kJ mol^-1 for the singlet and triplet radical ion pair state, respectively, were established.

Conformation-Controlled Diplatinum(II)-Ferrocene Dyads to Achieve Long-Lived Charge-Separated States

Square-planar polypyridyl platinum(II) complexes possess a rich range of structural and spectroscopic properties that are ideal for designing artificial photosynthetic centers. Taking advantage of the directionality in the charge-transfer excitation from the metal to the polypyridyl ligand, we describe here diplatinum(II)-ferrocene dyads, open-butterfly-like dyad 1 and closed-butterfly-like dyad 2, which were designed to understand the conformation and orientation effects to prolong the lifetime of charge-separated state. In contrast to the open-butterfly-like dyad 1, the closed-butterfly-like dyad 2 shows three-times long lifetime of charge separated state upon photoexcitation, demonstrating that the orientation in the rigid structure of dyad 2 is a very important issue to achieve long-lived charge separated state.

Electron-vibration entanglement in the Born-Oppenheimer description of chemical reactions and spectroscopy

Entanglement is sometimes regarded as the quintessential measure of the quantum nature of a system and its significance for the understanding of coupled electronic and vibrational motions in molecules has been conjectured. Previously, we considered the entanglement developed in a spatially localized diabatic basis representation of the electronic states, considering design rules for qubits in a low-temperature chemical quantum computer. We extend this to consider the entanglement developed during high-energy processes. We also consider the entanglement developed using adiabatic electronic basis, providing a novel way for interpreting effects of the breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation. We consider: (i) BO entanglement in the ground-state wavefunction relevant to equilibrium thermodynamics, (ii) BO entanglement associated with low-energy wavefunctions relevant to infrared and tunneling spectroscopies, (iii) BO entanglement in high-energy eigenfunctions relevant to chemical reaction processes, and (iv) BO entanglement developed during reactive wavepacket dynamics. A two-state single-mode diabatic model descriptive of a wide range of chemical phenomena is used for this purpose. The entanglement developed by BO breakdown correlates simply with the diameter of the cusp introduced by the BO approximation, and a hierarchy appears between the various BO-breakdown correction terms, with the first-derivative correction being more important than the second-derivative correction which is more important than the diagonal correction. This simplicity is in contrast to the complexity of BO-breakdown effects on thermodynamic, spectroscopic, and kinetic properties. Further, processes poorly treated at the BO level that appear adequately treated using the Born-Huang adiabatic approximation are found to have properties that can only be described using a non-adiabatic description. For the entanglement developed between diabatic electronic states and the nuclear motion, qualitatively differently behavior is found compared to traditional properties of the density matrix and hence entanglement provides new information about system properties. For chemical reactions, this type of entanglement simply builds up as the transition-state region is crossed. It is robust to small changes in parameter values and is therefore more attractive for making quantum qubits than is the related fragile ground-state entanglement, provided that coherent motion at the transition state can be sustained.

Green synthesis of dipyrromethanes in aqueous media catalyzed by SO3H-functionalized ionic liquid

A mild, efficient and metal-free method was described for the green synthesis of dipyrromethanes from aldehydes and unsubstituted pyrrole catalyzed by SO₃H-functionalized ionic liquids (SO₃H-ILs) in aqueous media at room temperature.

Putting David Craig’s Legacy to Work in Nanotechnology and Biotechnology

David Craig (1919–2015) left us with a lasting legacy concerning basic understanding of chemical spectroscopy and bonding. This is expressed in terms of some of the recent achievements of my own research career, with a focus on integration of Craig’s theories with those of Noel Hush to solve fundamental problems in photosynthesis, molecular electronics (particularly in regard to the molecules synthesized by Maxwell Crossley), and self-assembled monolayer structure and function. Reviewed in particular is the relation of Craig’s legacy to: the 50-year struggle to assign the visible absorption spectrum of arguably the world’s most significant chromophore, chlorophyll; general theories for chemical bonding and structure extending Hush’s adiabatic theory of electron-transfer processes; inelastic electron-tunnelling spectroscopy (IETS); chemical quantum entanglement and the Penrose–Hameroff model for quantum consciousness; synthetic design strategies for NMR quantum computing; Gibbs free-energy measurements and calculations for formation and polymorphism of organic self-assembled monolayers on graphite surfaces from organic solution; and understanding the basic chemical processes involved in the formation of gold surfaces and nanoparticles protected by sulfur-bound ligands, ligands whose form is that of Au0-thiyl rather than its commonly believed AuI-thiolate tautomer.

Synthesis and investigation of donor-porphyrin-acceptor triads with long-lived photo-induced charge-separate states

Two donor-porphyrin-acceptor triads have been synthesized using a versatile Suzuki-coupling route. This synthetic strategy allows the powerful donor tetraalkylphenylenediamine (TAPD) to be introduced into tetraarylporphyrin-based triads without protection. The thermodynamics and kinetics of electron transfer in the new triads are compared with a previously reported octaalkyldiphenyl-porphyrin triad exhibiting a long-lived spin-polarized charge separate state (CSS), from theoretical and experimental perspectives, in both fluid solution and in a frozen solvent glass. We show that the less favorable oxidation potential of the tetraaryl-porphyrin core can be offset by using C60 , as a better electron-acceptor than triptycenenaphthoquinone (TNQ). The C60 -porphyrin-TAPD triad gives a spin-polarized charge-separated state that can be observed by EPR-spectroscopy, with a mean lifetime of 16 ms at 10 K, which is longer than in the previously reported TNQ-porphyrin-TAPD triad, following the predicted trend from calculated charge-recombination rates.

On-off switch of charge-separated states of pyridine-vinylene-linked porphyrin-C60 conjugates detected by EPR

The design, synthesis, and electronic properties of a new series of D-π-A conjugates consisting of free base (H2P) and zinc porphyrins (ZnP) as electron donors and a fullerene (C60) as electron acceptor, in which the two electroactive entities are covalently linked through pyridine-vinylene spacers of different lengths, are described. Electronic interactions in the ground state were characterized by electrochemical and absorption measurements, which were further supported with theoretical calculations. Most importantly, charge-transfer bands were observed in the absorption spectra, indicating a strong push-pull behavior. In the excited states, electronic interactions were detected by selective photoexcitation under steady-state conditions, by time-resolved fluorescence investigations, and by pump probe experiments on the femto-, pico-, and nanosecond time scales. Porphyrin fluorescence is quenched for the different D-π-A conjugates, from which we conclude that the deactivation mechanisms of the excited singlet states are based on photoinduced energy- and/or electron transfer processes between H2P/ZnP and C60, mediated through the molecular spacers. The fluorescence intensity decreases and the fluorescence lifetimes shorten as the spacer length decreases and as the spacer substitution changes. With the help of transient absorption spectroscopy, the formation of charge-separated states involving oxidized H2P/ZnP and reduced C60 was confirmed. Lifetimes of the corresponding charge-separated states, which ranged from ∼400 picoseconds to 165 nanoseconds, depend on the spacer length, the spacer substitution, and the solvent polarity. Interestingly, D-π-A conjugates containing the longest linkers did not necessarily exhibit the longest charge-separated state lifetimes. The distances between the electron donors and the acceptors were calculated by molecular modelling. The longest charge-separated state lifetime corresponded to the D-π-A conjugate with the longest electron donor-acceptor distance. Likewise, EPR measurements in frozen media revealed charge separated states in all the D-π-A conjugates investigated. A sharp peak with g values ∼2.000 was assigned to reduced C60, while a broader, less intense signal (g ∼ 2.003) was assigned to oxidized H2P/ZnP. On-off switching of the formation and decay of the charge-separated states was detected by EPR at 77 K by repeatedly turning the irradiation source on and off.

Multi-modular, tris(triphenylamine) zinc porphyrin-zinc phthalocyanine-fullerene conjugate as a broadband capturing, charge stabilizing, photosynthetic 'antenna-reaction center' mimic

A broadband capturing, charge stabilizing, photosynthetic antenna-reaction center model compound has been newly synthesized and characterized. The model compound is comprised of a zinc porphyrin covalently linked to three units of triphenylamine entities and a zinc phthalocyanine entity. The absorption and fluorescence spectra of zinc porphyrin complemented that of zinc phthalocyanine offering broadband coverage. Stepwise energy transfer from singlet excited triphenylamine to zinc porphyrin, and singlet excited zinc porphyrin to zinc phthalocyanine (kENT ∼ 10(11) s(-1)) was established from spectroscopic and time-resolved transient absorption techniques. Next, an electron acceptor, fullerene was introduced via metal-ligand axial coordination to both zinc porphyrin and zinc phthalocyanine centers, and they were characterized by spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques. An association constant of 4.9 × 10(4) M(-1) for phenylimidazole functionalized fullerene binding to zinc porphyrin, and 5.1 × 10(4) M(-1) for it binding to zinc phthalocyanine was obtained. An energy level diagram for the occurrence of different photochemical events within the multi-modular donor-acceptor conjugate was established from spectral and electrochemical data. Unlike the previous zinc porphyrin-zinc phthalocyanine-fullerene conjugates, the newly assembled donor-acceptor conjugate has been shown to undergo the much anticipated initial charge separation from singlet excited zinc porphyrin to the coordinated fullerene followed by a hole shift process to zinc phthalocyanine resulting in a long-lived charge separated state as revealed by femto- and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopic techniques. The lifetime of the final charge separated state was about 100 ns.
