Abstract
Novel Ag@Ni nanosphere decorated with CdS NPs (Ag@Ni-CdS NCs) was synthesized by one step chemical synthesis method. The fabricated NCs were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), fourier transfer infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), zeta sizer and particle size analyzer. TEM and XRD confirmed the Ag in core and Ni in shell for the effective formation of Ag@Ni core shell nanosphere. EDAX and XPS spectra of NCs confirms the formation of Ag@Ni-CdS NCs. Zeta potential and particle size of the NCs was found to be 29.5 ± 1.5 mV and 24 ± 1 nm respectively. The complete loss in the peak intensity of Ag@Ni-CdS NCs (localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)) at ∼410 nm in presence of S2- ions was observed which indicates its selective detection towards S2- ions. The sulfide ion sensing by Ag@Ni-CdS NCs was due to the successive oxidation of Ag results in the formulation of Ag2+ ions in the system, which causes the diminishing of LSPR band of NCs. The limit of detection (LOD) of S2- ions by Ag@Ni-CdS NCs was calculated to be of 2.66 nM. The combination of CdS NPs with core-shell Ag@Ni nanosphere guides a promising strategy for S2- ions detection from environmental polluted samples.

Abstract
A simple method was developed in this work for facile and visual detection of S2- using a paper-based fluorescence (FL) sensor coated with CdTe quantum dots (QDs) by headspace sampling. With the addition of hydrochloric acid, the target S2- in the liquid phase would transform to H2 S, which was released to headspace and quenched the FL of CdTe QDs in a linear manner through a gas-solid reaction, with any possible liquid-phase interference avoided. The regular quenching caused by S2- in analyte solution with increased concentration could be easily observed by the naked eye, and the limit of detection (LOD) for this method was 0.13 μM and 0.93 μM for FL and visual sensing, respectively, comparable or not to that by other sensing probes. A relative standard deviation of 1.2% was accomplished from seven replicated measurements, implying the high reproducibility, and the recovery for the spiked water samples ranging from 94 to 103%, and illustrating the satisfactory reliability of this method. Moreover, the preparation of this paper sensor was facile and did not require any complicated or time-consuming procedures for additional modification or functionalization as for other probes previously reported.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is currently considered among the endogenously produced gaseous molecules that exert various signaling effects in mammalian species. It is the third physiological gasotransmitter discovered so far after NO and CO. H2S was originally ranked among the toxic gases at elevated levels to humans. Currently, it is well-known that, in the cardiovascular system, H2S exerts several cardioprotective effects including vasodilation, antioxidant regulation, inhibition of inflammation, and activation of anti-apoptosis. With an increasing interest in monitoring H2S, the development of analysis methods should now follow. AIM OF REVIEW This review stages special emphasis on the several analytical technologies used for its determination including spectroscopic, chromatographic, and electrochemical methods. Advantages and limitations with regards to the application of each technique are highlighted with special emphasis on its employment for H2S in vivo measurement i.e., biofluids, tissues. KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS AND IMPORTANT FINDINGS OF REVIEW Fluorescence methods applied for H2S measurement offer an attractive non-invasive and promising approach in addition to its selectivity, however they cannot be considered as H2S-specific probes. On the other hand, colorimetric assays are among the most common methods used for in vitro H2S detection, albeit their employment in vivo H2S measurement has not yet been possible . Separation techniques such as gas or liquid chromatography offer higher selectivity compared to direct spectrophotometric or fluorescence methods especially for suitable for endpoint H2S measurements i.e. plasma or tissue samples. Despite all the developed analytical procedures used for H2S determination, the need for highly selective, much work should be devoted to resolve all the pitfalls of the current methods.

Abstract
The two-dimensional (2D) periodic Au nanosphere array with silver coating was prepared by using a colloidal monolayer template to obtain a Au nanosphere array and subsequently depositing silver thin coating on it, which could be used as an optical sensor to effectively detect H2S. Such periodic Au nanosphere array with silver coating displayed a surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) peak and an optical diffraction peak. Compared with the SPR peak, the diffraction peak, originated from the periodic arrangements of the obtained array, demonstrated a more sensitive optical change to detect H2S with a significant redshift as the H2S concentration increased. It was attributed to the increase of the refractive index of the environment around the Au nanosphere arrays with silver coating due to the partial formation of Ag2S after detecting H2S. Furthermore, the H2S sensor based on the change of the optical diffraction peak, showed an excellent selectivity and it was very sensitive to detect H2S from 2 to 30 μM. This method was investigated by the analysis in H2S-spiked blood samples, which indicates that the method has the potential to detect H2S in blood samples. The presented work provides a new strategy of utilizing the optical diffraction peak of the periodic array to develop promising sensors.

Abstract
Due to their unique optical properties, narrow size distributions, and good biological affinity, gold nanoparticles have been widely applied in sensing analysis, catalytic, environmental monitoring, and disease therapy. The color of a gold nanoparticle solution and its maximum characteristic absorption wavelength will change with the particle size and inter-particle spacing. These properties are often used in the detection of hazardous chemicals, such as pesticide residues, heavy metals, banned additives, and biotoxins, in food. Because the gold nanoparticles-colorimetric sensing strategy is simple, quick, and sensitive, this method has extensive applications in real-time on-site monitoring and rapid testing of food quality and safety. Herein, we review the preparation methods, functional modification, photochemical properties, and applications of gold nanoparticle sensors in rapid testing. In addition, we elaborate on the colorimetric sensing mechanisms. Finally, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of colorimetric sensors based on gold nanoparticles, and directions for future development.

Abstract
As a well-known environmental pollutant but also an important gaseous transmitter, the specific detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is significant in biological systems. In this study, fluorosurfactant functionalized gold nanorods (FSN-AuNRs) have been proposed to act as selective colorimetric nanoprobes for H2S. With the combination of strong gold-S interactions and small FSN bilayer interstices, FSN-AuNRs demonstrate favorable selectivity and sensitivity toward H2S over other anions and small biological molecules. The practical application of the present method in biological H2S detection was validated with human and mouse serum samples. Moreover, the proposed nanoprobe can also be used for evaluating the activity of H2S synthetase.

Abstract
Au nanoparticle-carbon dot core-shell (Au@C-dot) nanocomposite was synthesized in aqueous medium at room temperature using the carbon dots as reducing agents themselves. The carbon nanodots also function as an effective stabilizer by forming a thin layer surrounding Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) similar to self-assembled monolayers. Ligand exchange with thiol containing biomolecules resulted in the release of carbon dots from the Au NP surface leading to an enhancement of fluorescence. Simultaneously the agglomeration of Au NPs stimulated by the interaction of biothiols led to changes in the surface plasmon properties of Au NPs. A detailed spectroscopic investigation revealed a combination of static and dynamic quenching being involved in the process. Thus, the Au nanoparticle-carbon dot composite could be used as a dual colorimetric and fluorometric sensor for biothiols ranging from amino acids, peptides, proteins, enzymes etc. with a detection limit of 50 nM.

Abstract
With increasing trends of global population growth, urbanization, pollution over-exploitation, and climate change, the safe water supply has become a global issue and is threatening our society in terms of sustainable development. Therefore, there is a growing need for a water-monitoring platform with the capability of rapidness, specificity, low-cost, and robustness. This review summarizes the recent developments in the design and application of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) based optical assays to detect contaminants in aqueous media with a high performance. First, a brief discussion on the correlation between the optical reading strategy and the optical properties of AuNPs is presented. Then, we summarize the principle behind AuNP-based optical assays to detect different contaminants, such as toxic metal ion, anion, and pesticides, according to different optical reading strategies: colorimetry, scattering, and fluorescence. Finally, the comparison of these assays and the outlook of AuNP-based optical detection are discussed.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide is an important biological signaling molecule and an important environmental target for detection. A major challenge in developing H2S detection methods is separating the often similar reactivity of thiols and other nucleophiles from H2S. To address this need, the nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) reaction of H2S with electron-poor aromatic electrophiles was developed as a strategy to separate H2S and thiol reactivity. Treatment of aqueous solutions of nitrobenzofurazan (7-nitro-1,2,3-benzoxadiazole, NBD) thioethers with H2S resulted in thiol extrusion and formation of nitrobenzofurazan thiol (λmax = 534 nm). This reactivity allows for unwanted thioether products to be converted to the desired nitrobenzofurazan thiol upon reaction with H2S. The scope of the reaction was investigated using a Hammett linear free energy relationship study, and the determined ρ = +0.34 is consistent with the proposed SN2Ar reaction mechanism. The efficacy of the developed probes was demonstrated in buffer and in serum with associated submicromolar detection limits as low as 190 nM (buffer) and 380 nM (serum). Furthermore, the sigmoidal response of nitrobenzofurazan electrophiles with H2S can be fit to accurately quantify H2S. The developed detection strategy offers a manifold for H2S detection that we foresee being applied in various future applications.

Abstract
We report a one-pot, two-step strategy to synthesize fluorescent gold nanodots (AuNDs) co-modified with 1-(10-mercaptodecyl)-5-methylpyrimidine-2,4-dione (TSH) and 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) through a ligand exchange reaction and demonstrate their capability of selective sulfide sensing in aqueous media on the basis of fluorescence recovery.
