Recent advances in supramolecular fullerene chemistry

Fullerene chemistry has come a long way since 1990, when the first bulk production of C60 was reported. In the past decade, progress in supramolecular chemistry has opened some remarkable and previously unexpected opportunities regarding the selective (multiple) functionalization of fullerenes and their (self)assembly into larger structures and frameworks. The purpose of this review article is to provide a comprehensive overview of these recent developments. We describe how macrocycles and cages that bind strongly to C60 can be used to block undesired addition patterns and thus allow the selective preparation of single-isomer addition products. We also discuss how the emergence of highly shape-persistent macrocycles has opened opportunities for the study of photoactive fullerene dyads and triads as well as the preparation of mechanically interlocked compounds. The preparation of two- or three-dimensional fullerene materials is another research area that has seen remarkable progress over the past few years. Due to the rapidly decreasing price of C60 and C70, we believe that these achievements will translate into all fields where fullerenes have traditionally (third-generation solar cells) and more recently been applied (catalysis, spintronics).

Pathway selection in the self-assembly of Rh4L4 coordination squares under kinetic control

Pathway selection principles in reversible reaction networks such as molecular self-assembly have not been established yet, because achieving kinetic control in reversible reaction networks is more complicated than in irreversible ones. In this study, we discovered that coordination squares consisting of cis-protected dinuclear rhodium(II) corner complexes and linear ditopic ligands are assembled under kinetic control, perfectly preventing the corresponding triangles, by modulating their energy landscapes with a weak monotopic carboxylate ligand (2,6-dichlorobenzoate: dcb-) as the leaving ligand. Experimental and numerical approaches revealed the self-assembly pathway where the cyclization step to form the triangular complex is blocked by dcb-. It was also found that one of the molecular squares assembled into a dimeric structure owing to the solvophobic effect, which was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Reversible Multielectron Release from Redox-Active Three-Dimensional Molecular Barrels with Ruthenium-Alkenyl Moieties

Three-dimensional molecular barrels Ru₆-4 and Ru₆-5 were synthesized in high yields from dinuclear ruthenium-vinyl clamps and tritopic triphenylamine-derived carboxylate linkers and characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy including ¹H-¹H COSY and ¹H DOSY measurements, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography. The metal frameworks of the cages adopt the shape of twisted trigonal prisms, and they crystallize as racemic mixtures of interdigitating Δ- and Λ-enantiomers with a tight columnar packing in Ru₆-4. Electrochemical studies and redox titrations revealed that the cages are able to release up to 11 electrons on the voltammetric timescale and that their cage structures persist up to the hexacation level. IR and UV-vis-near-infrared spectroelectrochemical studies confirm substituent-dependent intramolecular electronic communication within the π-conjugated 1,3-divinylphenylene backbone in the tricationic states, where all three divinylphenylene-bridged diruthenium clamps are present in mixed-valent radical cation states. The formation of 1:3 charge-transfer salts with 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane as the electron acceptor is also demonstrated.

Synthesis of a chiral metallo-capsule composed of concave molecules and chirogenesis upon fullerene binding

An enantiopure molecular capsule was synthesized quantitatively using complexation of four phosphangulenes as concave molecules with four Zn²⁺ ions and applied to fullerene binding and chirogenesis. The capsule encapsulated selectively fullerene and its derivatives based on the size of cavity. The fullerene C₆₀ incorporated in the capsule exhibited induced-CD signals at the transitions of C₆₀.

Enantiopure Polyradical Tetrahedral Pd12 L6 Cages

The synthesis of cages with a polyradical framework remains a challenging task. Herein is reported an enantiomeric pair of quinoid-bridged polyradical tetrahedral palladium(II) cages that are stabilized by an unusual dianionic diradical form (dhbq^..2- ). These cages have been characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance and UV-visible spectroscopy, squid magnetometry and mass spectrometry. Single-crystal-derived X-ray investigations of the iso-structural cages built on fluoranilate linkers confirm the tetrahedral structure of the obtained radical cages. Theoretical calculations showed that the diradical state of the dhbq anions is more stable than the usual monoradical state. A weak ferromagnetic exchange between adjacent radical centers was observed in DFT studies.

Electron-rich Coordination Receptors Based on Tetrathiafulvalene Derivatives: Controlling the Host-Guest Binding

The coordination-driven self-assembly methodology has emerged over the last few decades as an extraordinarily versatile synthetic tool for obtaining discrete macrocyclic or cage structures. Rational approaches using large libraries of ligands and metal complexes have allowed researchers to reach more and more sophisticated discrete structures such as interlocked, chiral, or heteroleptic cages, and some of them are designed for guest binding applications. Efforts have been notably produced in controlling host-guest affinity with, in particular, an evident interest in targeting substrate transportation and subsequent delivering. Recent accomplishments in this direction were described from functional cages which can be addressed with light, pH, or through a chemical exchange. The case of a redox-stimulation has been much less explored. In this case, the charge state of the redox-active cavity can be controlled through an applied electrical potential or introduction of an appropriate oxidizing/reducing chemical agent. Beyond possible applications in electrochemical sensing for environmental and medical sciences as well as for redox catalysis, controlling the cavity charge offers the possibility to modulate the host-guest binding affinity through electrostatic interactions, up to the point of disassembly of the host-guest complex, i.e., releasing of the guest molecule from the host cavity.This Account highlights the key studies that we carried out at Angers, related to discrete redox-active coordination-based architectures (i.e., metalla-rings, -cages, and -tweezers). These species are built upon metal-driven self-assembly between electron-rich ligands, based on the tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) moiety (as well as some of its S-rich derivatives), and various metal complexes. Given the high π-donating character of those ligands, the corresponding host structures exhibit a high electronic density on the cavity panels. This situation is favorable to bind complementary electron-poor guests, as it was illustrated with bis(pyrrolo)tetrathiafulvalene (BPTTF)-based cavities, which exhibit hosting properties for C₆₀ or tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ-F₄). In addition to the pristine tetrathiafulvalene, which was successfully incorporated into palladium- or ruthenium-based architectures, the case of the so-called extended tetrathiafulvalene (exTTF) appears particularly fascinating. A series of related polycationic and neutral M₄L₂ ovoid containers, as well as a M₆L₃ cage, were synthesized, and their respective binding abilities for neutral and anionic guests were studied. Remarkably, such structures allow to control of the binding of the guest upon a redox-stimulation, through two distinctive processes: (i) cage disassembling or (ii) guest displacement. As an extension of this approach, metalla-assembled electron-rich tweezers were designed, which are able to trigger the guest release through an original process based on supramolecular dimerization activated through a redox stimulus. This ensemble of results illustrates the remarkable ability of electron-rich, coordination-based self-assembled cavities to bind various types of guests and, importantly, to trigger their release through a redox-stimulus.

Redox-Induced Hydrogen Bond Reorientation Mimicking Electronic Coupling in Mixed-Valent Diruthenium and Macrocyclic Tetraruthenium Complexes

We present the coordination-driven self-assembly of three tetranuclear metallacycles containing intracyclic NH₂, OH, or OMe functionalities through the combination of various isophthalic acid building blocks with a divinylphenylene diruthenium complex. All new complexes of this study were characterized by means of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, ultrahigh-resolution ESI mass spectrometry, cyclic and square wave voltammetry and, in two cases, X-ray diffraction. The hydroxy functionalized macrocycle 4-BOH and the corresponding half-cycle 2-OH stand out, as their intracyclic OH···O hydrogen bonds stabilize their mixed-valent one- (2-OH, 4-BOH) and three-electron-oxidized states (4-BOH). Despite sizable redox splittings between all one-electron waves, the mixed-valent monocations and trications do not exhibit any intervalence charge-transfer band, assignable to through-bond electronic coupling, but nevertheless display distinct IR band shifts of their charge-sensitive Ru(CO) tags. We ascribe these seemingly contradicting observations to a redox-induced shuffling of the OH···O hydrogen bond(s) to the remaining, more electron-rich, reduced redox site.

Ring size matters: supramolecular isomerism in self-assembled redox-active tetra- and hexaruthenium macrocycles

Self-assembly of a divinylthiophene-bridged diruthenium complex with 2,5-furandicarboxylate leads to the formation of two macrocyclic structures that differ solely with regard to their respective nuclearities. Both supramolecular isomers were fully characterized and the conversion of the hexa- to the tetraruthenium macrocycle was followed by NMR monitoring.

Metalla-Assembled Electron-Rich Tweezers: Redox-Controlled Guest Release Through Supramolecular Dimerization

Developing methodologies for on-demand control of the release of a molecular guest requires the rational design of stimuli-responsive hosts with functional cavities. While a substantial number of responsive metallacages have already been described, the case of coordination-tweezers has been less explored. Herein, we report the first example of a redox-triggered guest release from a metalla-assembled tweezer. This tweezer incorporates two redox-active panels constructed from the electron-rich 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)fluorene unit that are facing each other. It dimerizes spontaneously in solution and the resulting interpenetrated supramolecular structure can dissociate in the presence of an electron-poor planar unit, forming a 1:1 host-guest complex. This complex dissociates upon tweezer oxidation/dimerization, offering an original redox-triggered molecular delivery pathway.

Tuning the structure and the properties of dithiafulvene metalla-assembled tweezers

An electroactive M₂L₂ metalla-macrocycle constructed through coordination driven self-assembly dimerizes upon oxidation and binds an electro-deficient substrate with a high association constant.

Charge-transfer interactions between fullerenes and a mesoporous tetrathiafulvalene-based metal-organic framework

The design of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) incorporating electroactive guest molecules in the pores has become a subject of great interest in order to obtain additional electrical functionalities within the framework while maintaining porosity. Understanding the charge-transfer (CT) process between the framework and the guest molecules is a crucial step towards the design of new electroactive MOFs. Herein, we present the encapsulation of fullerenes (C₆₀) in a mesoporous tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based MOF. The CT process between the electron-acceptor C₆₀ guest and the electron-donor TTF ligand is studied in detail by means of different spectroscopic techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Importantly, gas sorption measurements demonstrate that sorption capacity is maintained after encapsulation of fullerenes, whereas the electrical conductivity is increased by two orders of magnitude due to the CT interactions between C₆₀ and the TTF-based framework.

New π-extended catecholato complexes of Pt(ii) and Pd(ii) containing a benzothienobenzothiophene (BTBT) moiety: synthesis, electrochemical behavior and charge transfer properties

Benzothienobenzothiophene (BTBT) and derivatives have received increasing attention as organic field-effect transistor materials and molecular conductors. This report presents the first synthesis of metal complexes involving a BTBT moiety, which was achieved by complexation of 2,2'-bipyridyl complexes of Pt(ii) and Pd(ii) with dihydroxy-substituted BTBT (1) as a new π-extended catecholato ligand (^tBu₂Bpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-dipyridyl). The resulting complexes M(^tBu₂Bpy)(O₂BTBT) (M = Pt (3Pt) and Pd (3Pd)) were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and cyclic voltammetry. The electron donating ability of BTBT was substantially enhanced upon including two oxygen substituents followed by metal coordination. This enabled chemical oxidation of 3Pt and 3Pd with a mild chemical oxidant (ferrocenium hexafluorophosphate) and formation of the one-electron-oxidized state. While 3Pt and 3Pd exhibited an absorption band originating from a catecholate → Bpy ligand-to-ligand charge transfer transition typical of this class of catecholato complexes, the radical cations exhibited a unique π-π* intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transition absorption in which the π and π* orbitals were the newly incorporated benzothienothiophene-based donor and semiquinonato-based acceptor, respectively. The BTBT⁺ skeleton was electronically divided into two sites by the present chemical modification. The ICT properties of the complexes were found to be modulated by varying the metal ions. These findings offer a new approach to molecular design for (semi)conducting materials using optical properties.

Advances in the synthesis of functionalised pyrrolotetrathiafulvalenes

The electron-donor and unique redox properties of the tetrathiafulvalene (TTF, 1) moiety have led to diverse applications in many areas of chemistry. Monopyrrolotetrathiafulvalenes (MPTTFs, 4) and bispyrrolotetrathiafulvalenes (BPTTFs, 5) are useful structural motifs and have found widespread use in fields such as supramolecular chemistry and molecular electronics. Protocols enabling the synthesis of functionalised MPTTFs and BPTTFs are therefore of broad interest. Herein, we present the synthesis of a range of functionalised MPTTF and BPTTF species. Firstly, the large-scale preparation of the precursor species N-tosyl-(1,3)-dithiolo[4,5-c]pyrrole-2-one (6) is described, as well as the synthesis of the analogue N-tosyl-4,6-dimethyl-(1,3)-dithiolo[4,5-c]pyrrole-2-one (7). Thereafter, we show how 6 and 7 can be used to prepare BPTTFs using homocoupling reactions and functionalised MPTTFs using cross-coupling reactions with a variety of 1,3-dithiole-2-thiones (19). Subsequently, the incorporation of more complex functionality is discussed. We show how the 2-cyanoethyl protecting group can be used to afford MPTTFs functionalised with thioethers, exemplified by a series of ethylene glycol derivatives. Additionally, the merits of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) as an alternative to the most common deprotecting agent, CsOH·H2O are discussed. Finally, we show how a copper-mediated Ullman-type reaction can be applied to the N-arylation of MPTTFs and BPTTFs using a variety of aryl halides.

Tuning the size of a redox-active tetrathiafulvalene-based self-assembled ring

The synthesis of a new Pd coordination-driven self-assembled ring M6L3 constructed from a concave tetrapyridyl π-extended tetrathiafulvalene ligand (exTTF) is described. The same ligand is also able to self-assemble in a M4L2 mode as previously described. Herein, we demonstrate that the bulkiness of the ancillary groups in the Pd complex allows for modulating the size and the shape of the resulting discrete self-assembly, which therefore incorporate two (M4L2) or three (M6L3) electroactive exTTF sidewalls.

Sponge-like molecular cage for purification of fullerenes

Since fullerenes are available in macroscopic quantities from fullerene soot, large efforts have been geared toward designing efficient strategies to obtain highly pure fullerenes, which can be subsequently applied in multiple research fields. Here we present a supramolecular nanocage synthesized by metal-directed self-assembly, which encapsulates fullerenes of different sizes. Direct experimental evidence is provided for the 1:1 encapsulation of C60, C70, C76, C78 and C84, and solid state structures for the host-guest adducts with C60 and C70 have been obtained using X-ray synchrotron radiation. Furthermore, we design a washing-based strategy to exclusively extract pure C60 from a solid sample of cage charged with a mixture of fullerenes. These results showcase an attractive methodology to selectively extract C60 from fullerene mixtures, providing a platform to design tuned cages for selective extraction of higher fullerenes. The solid-phase fullerene encapsulation and liberation represent a twist in host-guest chemistry for molecular nanocage structures.

A Self-Assembled Electro-Active M8L4 Cage Based on Tetrathiafulvalene Ligands

Two self-assembled redox-active cages are presented. They are obtained by coordination-driven self-assembly of a tetra-pyridile tetrathiafulvalene ligand with cis-M(dppf)(OTf)₂ (M = Pd or Pt; dppf = 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene; OTf = trifluoromethane-sulfonate) complexes. Both species are fully characterized and are constituted of 12 electro-active subunits that can be reversibly oxidized.

‘Click’ to functionalise: synthesis, characterisation and enhancement of the physical properties of a series of exo- and endo-functionalised Pd2L4nanocages

Facile CuAAC ‘click’ chemistry has been utilised toexo-functionalise Pd₂L₄host nanocages with electrochemically active, emissive and solubilising groups.
