Chiral H-aggregation-induced large stokes shift with CPL generation assisted by α-helical poly(L-lysine) substructure

Fluorescent materials with large Stokes shifts have significant potential for use in optical applications. Typically, a synthetic design strategy is utilized for this purpose. In this study, we demonstrated a novel method by binding a chiral template to a nonchiral fluorescent agent without chemical modification. Specifically, α-helical poly(L-lysine) was employed as the chiral template, which interacted with a disulfonic fluorescent dye, such as NK2751. The dye caused excimer luminescence by inducing the formation of a chirally H-aggregated dimer only when poly(L-lysine) was in an α-helical shape. The result was a Stokes shift of 230 nm. Similar effects were not observed when the chiral template was in a random coil condition and the Stokes shift was less than 40 nm. These findings imply that H-aggregated dimerization, which often results in quenching, permits the electronic transitions necessary for fluorescence events by the formation of the chirally twisted state. In addition, we introduce for the first time the generation of circularly polarized luminescence using the chirality induction phenomena in a dye supported by poly(L-lysine).

Chiroptical Properties in Thin Films of π-Conjugated Systems

Chiral π-conjugated molecules provide new materials with outstanding features for current and perspective applications, especially in the field of optoelectronic devices. In thin films, processes such as charge conduction, light absorption, and emission are governed not only by the structure of the individual molecules but also by their supramolecular structures and intermolecular interactions to a large extent. Electronic circular dichroism, ECD, and its emission counterpart, circularly polarized luminescence, CPL, provide tools for studying aggregated states and the key properties to be sought for designing innovative devices. In this review, we shall present a comprehensive coverage of chiroptical properties measured on thin films of organic π-conjugated molecules. In the first part, we shall discuss some general concepts of ECD, CPL, and other chiroptical spectroscopies, with a focus on their applications to thin film samples. In the following, we will overview the existing literature on chiral π-conjugated systems whose thin films have been characterized by ECD and/or CPL, as well other chiroptical spectroscopies. Special emphasis will be put on systems with large dissymmetry factors (g_abs and g_lum) and on the application of ECD and CPL to derive structural information on aggregated states.

Emission-Color Control in Polymer Films by Memorized Fluorescence Solvatochromism in a New Class of Totally Organic Fluorescent Nanogel Particles

In this work, a new class of totally organic fluorescent nanogel particles and their exceptionally specific behaviors based on their unique structures are introduced, which draws a sharp line from conventional fluorophore-doped and fluorophore-branched-type particles. The nanogel particles, the diameter of which could be controlled by adjusting reaction conditions, such as the solvent system, were spontaneously fabricated with a spherical shape by direct polymerization of non-heterocyclic aromatic compounds, such as 2,6-dihydroxyanthracene, 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene, and 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene with triazinane as the cross-linker. A fluorophoric moiety formed from a polymer main chain was realized in the particle, and consequently, the resultant content of the fluorophoric moiety was around 70-80 wt % per particle. The uniqueness and versatility of the particles can be emphasized by their good compatibility with various solvents due to their amphiphilic and ampholytic swelling properties, but also by their remarkable fluorescent solvatochromism in the dispersion state. Furthermore, these behaviors were preserved even in their polymer composite system. This study also demonstrates that various fluorescent polymer films can be fabricated with emission color control due to memorization of the solvatochromism phenomenon of the dispersed fluorescent nanoparticles.

Diarylethene-based xerogels: the fabrication of more entangled networks driven by isomerization and acidofluorochromism

Highly Efficient Photon Upconversion in Self-Assembled Light-Harvesting Molecular Systems

To meet the world’s demands on the development of sunlight-powered renewable energy production, triplet–triplet annihilation-based photon upconversion (TTA–UC) has raised great expectations. However, an ideal highly efficient, low-power, and in-air TTA–UC has not been achieved. Here, we report a novel self-assembly approach to achieve this, which enabled highly efficient TTA–UC even in the presence of oxygen. A newly developed lipophilic 9,10-diphenylanthracene-based emitter molecule functionalized with multiple hydrogen-bonding moieties spontaneously coassembled with a triplet sensitizer in organic media, showing efficient triplet sensitization and subsequent triplet energy migration among the preorganized chromophores. This supramolecular light-harvesting system shows a high UC quantum yield of 30% optimized at low excitation power in deaerated conditions. Significantly, the UC emission largely remains even in an air-saturated solution, and this approach is facilely applicable to organogel and solid-film systems.

Response of strongly fluorescent carbazole-based benzoxazole derivatives to external force and acidic vapors

The nanofibers have enhanced emission and exhibited an isothermal reversible mechanochromism. Furthermore, acetic acid vapor may selectively act as stabilizer and developer to retain the information imparted by mechanical force.

Emission enhancement of a coplanar π-conjugated gelator without any auxiliary substituents

A linear coplanar carbazole-based benzoxazole derivative without any auxiliary moieties could gelatinize organic solvents, and exhibited emission enhancement owing to the J-aggregate formation.
