Modular self-assembled multiporphyrin cages with tunable shape

A Flexible Synthetic Strategy for the Preparation of Heteroleptic Metallacycles of Porphyrins

We present a stepwise synthetic strategy for the preparation of the unprecedented heteroleptic 2+2 neutral metallacycle [{t,c,c-RuCl₂(CO)₂}₂(4'cisDPyP)(3'cisDPyP)] (5), in which two different 5,10-meso-dipyridylporphyrins, 4'cisDPyP [i.e., 5,10-bis(4'-pyridyl)-15,20-diphenylporphyrin] and 3'cisDPyP [i.e., 5,10-bis(3'-pyridyl)-15,20-diphenylporphyrin], are joined through equal 90°-angular Ru(II) connectors. The synthesis of 5 was accomplished through the preparation of a reactive ditopic intermediate in which one of the two pyridylporphyrins is linked to two neutral ruthenium fragments, each having one residual readily available coordination site (a dmso-O). Thus, compound 5 was obtained under mild conditions through two complementary routes: either by treatment of [{t,c,c-RuCl₂(CO)₂(dmso-O)}₂(4'cisDPyP)] (3) with 1 equiv of 3'cisDPyP or, alternatively, by treatment of [{t,c,c-RuCl₂(CO)₂(dmso-O)}₂(3'cisDPyP)] (4) with 1 equiv of 4'cisDPyP. Heteroleptic metallacycle 5 was isolated in pure form in acceptable yield and fully characterized. Spectroscopic data and a molecular model show that 5 has an L-shaped geometry, with the two porphyrins almost orthogonal to one another. The modular approach that we established is highly flexible and opens the way to several possible exciting developments.

A Five-layer π-Aromatic Structure Formed through Self-assembly of a Porphyrin Trimer and Two Aromatic Guests

In this study we synthesized two- and four-armed porphyrins - bearing two carboxyl and four 2-aminoquinolino functionalities, respectively, at their meso positions - as a complementary hydrogen bonding pair for the self-assembly of a D₂ -symmetric porphyrin trimer host. Two units of the two-armed porphyrin and one unit of the four-armed porphyrin self-assembled quantitatively into the D₂ -symmetric porphyrin trimer, stabilized through ammidinium-carboxylate salt bridge formation, in CH₂ Cl₂ and CHCl₃ . The porphyrin trimer host gradually bound two units of 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene between the pair of porphyrin units, forming a five-layer aromatic structure. At temperatures below -40 °C, the rates of association and dissociation of the complexes were slow on the NMR spectroscopic time scale, allowing the 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 complexes of the trimer host and trinitrobenzene guest(s) to be detected independently when using less than 2 eq of trinitrobenzene. Vis titration experiments revealed the values of K₁ (2.1±0.4×10⁵  M^-1 ) and K₂ (2.2±0.06×10⁴  M^-1 ) in CHCl₃ at room temperature.

Orthogonal Coordination Chemistry of PTA toward Ru(II) and Zn(II) (PTA = 1,3,5-Triaza-7-phosphaadamantane) for the Construction of 1D and 2D Metal-Mediated Porphyrin Networks

This work demonstrates that PTA (1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane) behaves as an orthogonal ligand between Ru(II) and Zn(II), since it selectively binds through the P atom to ruthenium and through one or more of the N atoms to zinc. This property of PTA was exploited for preparing the two monomeric porphyrin adducts with axially bound PTA, [Ru(TPP)(PTA-κP)₂] (1, TPP = meso-tetraphenylporphyrin) and [Zn(TPP)(PTA-κN)] (3). Next, we prepared a number of heterobimetallic Ru/Zn porphyrin polymeric networks—and two discrete molecular systems—mediated by P,N-bridging PTA in which either both metals reside inside a porphyrin core, or one metal belongs to a porphyrin, either Ru(TPP) or Zn(TPP), and the other to a complex or salt of the complementary metal (i.e., cis,cis,trans-[RuCl₂(CO)₂(PTA-κP)₂] (5), trans-[RuCl₂(PTA-κP)₄] (7), Zn(CH₃COO)₂, and ZnCl₂). The molecular compounds 1, 3, trans-[{RuCl₂(PTA-κ²P,N)₄}{Zn(TPP)}₄] (8), and [{Ru(TPP)(PTA-κP)(PTA-κ²P,N)}{ZnCl₂(OH₂)}] (11), as well as the polymeric species [{Ru(TPP)(PTA-κ²P,N)₂}{Zn(TPP)}]_∞ (4), cis,cis,trans-[{RuCl₂(CO)₂(PTA-κ²P,N)₂}{Zn(TPP)}]_∞ (6), trans-[{RuCl₂(PTA-κ²P,N)₄}{Zn(TPP)}₂]_∞ (9), and [{Ru(TPP)(PTA-κ³P,2N)₂}{Zn₉(CH₃COO)₁₆(CH₃OH)₂(OH)₂}]_∞ (10), were structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 4, 6, 9, and 10 are the first examples of solid-state porphyrin networks mediated by PTA. In 4, 6, 8, 9, and 11 the bridging PTA has the κ²P,N binding mode, whereas in the 2D polymeric layers of 10 it has the triple-bridging mode κ³P,2N. The large number of compounds with the six-coordinate Zn(TPP) (the three polymeric networks of 4, 6 and 9, out of five compounds) strongly suggests that the stereoelectronic features of PTA are particularly well-suited for this relatively rare type of coordination. Interestingly, the similar 1D polymeric chains 4 and 6 have different shapes (zigzag in 4 vs “Greek frame” in 6) because the {trans-Ru(PTA-κ²P,N)₂} fragment bridges two Zn(TPP) units with anti geometry in 4 and with syn geometry in 6. Orthogonal “Greek frame” 1D chains make the polymeric network of 9. Having firmly established the binding preferences of PTA toward Ru(II) and Zn(II), we are confident that in the future a variety of Ru/Zn solid-state networks can be produced by changing the nature of the partners. In particular, there are several inert Ru(II) compounds that feature two or more P-bonded PTA ligands that might be exploited as connectors of well-defined geometry for the rational design of solid-state networks with Zn–porphyrins (or other Zn compounds).

Rare Example of Stereoisomeric 2 + 2 Metallacycles of Porphyrins Featuring Chiral-at-Metal Octahedral Ruthenium Corners

In this paper, we describe three new stereoisomers of the already known 2 + 2 metallacycle of porphyrins [ trans, cis, cis-RuCl₂(CO)₂(4' cisDPyP)]₂ (2, 4' cisDPyP = 5,10-bis(4'-pyridyl)-15,20-diphenylporphyrin), namely [{ trans,cis,cis-RuCl₂(CO)₂}(4' cisDPyP)₂{ cis,cis,cis-RuCl₂(CO)₂}] (14) and [ cis,cis,cis-RuCl₂(CO)₂(4' cisDPyP)]₂ (15), in which the chiral { cis,cis,cis-RuCl₂(CO)₂} fragment has either a C or A handedness. The least abundant 15 exists as a mixture of two stereoisomers defined as alternate (15_alt, both porphyrins are trans to a Cl and a CO) and pairwise (15_pw, one porphyrin is trans to two chlorides and the other to two carbonyls), each one as a statistical mixture of meso ( AC) and racemic ( AA and CC) diastereomers. Remarkably, both 14 and 15 are-to the best of our knowledge-unprecedented examples of 2D metallacycles with octahedral chiral-at-metal connectors, and 14 is the first example of a 2 + 2 molecular square with stereoisomeric Ru(II) corners. Whereas 2 is selectively obtained by treatment of trans,cis,cis-RuCl₂(CO)₂(dmso-O)₂ (1) with 4' cisDPyP, 14 and 15 were obtained, together with 2 (major product), using stereoisomers of 1, either cis,cis,trans-RuCl₂(CO)₂(dmso-S)₂ (5) or cis,cis,cis-RuCl₂(CO)₂(dmso)₂ (6), as precursors. From a general point of view, this work demonstrates that-even for the smallest 2 + 2 metallacycle and using a symmetric organic linker-several stereoisomers can be generated when using octahedral metal connectors of the type {MA₂B₂} that are not stereochemically rigid. As a proof-of-concept, it also opens the way to new-even though challenging-opportunities: unprecedented and yet unexplored chiral metallosupramolecular assemblies can be obtained and eventually exploited (e.g., for supramolecular catalysis) by using stereogenic octahedral metal connectors amenable to become chiral centers.

Highlight on the solution processes occurring on silver(i)-assembling porphyrins in the presence of an excess of silver salt

Coordination cages obtained upon complexation of pyridyl functionalized porphyrins by Ag⁺ disassemble when overtaking a 1 : 2 stoichiometric amount of silver salt. An excess of Ag⁺ then leads to unusual chemical processes, here analyzed in detail, which permanently transform the monomeric porphyrins. The observed processes, discussed with reference to model compounds devoid of polyether substituted pyridyl residues, evidence a peculiar reactivity for meso 2,6-dimethylphenyl substituted porphyrins.

Making the invisible visible: improved electrospray ion formation of metalloporphyrins/-phthalocyanines by attachment of the formate anion (HCOO(-))

A protocol is developed for the coordination of the formate anion (HCOO(-)) to neutral metalloporphyrins (Pors) and -phthalocyanines (Pcs) containing divalent metals as a means to improve their ion formation in electrospray ionization (ESI). This method is particularly useful when the oxidation of the neutral metallomacrocycle fails. While focusing on Zn(II)Pors and Zn(II)Pcs, we show that formate is also readily attached to Mn(II), Mg(II) and Co(II)Pcs. However, for the Co(II)Pc secondary reactions can be observed. Upon collision-induced dissociation (CID), Zn(II)Por/Pc·formate supramolecular complexes can undergo the loss of CO2 in combination with transfer of a hydride anion (H(-)) to the zinc metal center. Further dissociation leads to electron transfer and hydrogen atom loss, generating a route to the radical anion of the Zn(II)Por/Pc without the need for electrochemical reduction, although the Zn(II)Por/Pc may have a too low electron affinity to allow electron transfer directly from the formate anion. In addition to single Por molecules, multi Por arrays were successfully analyzed by this method. In this case, multiple addition of formate occurs, giving rise to multiply charged species. In these multi Por arrays, complexation of the formate anion occurs by two surrounding Por units (sandwich). Therefore, the maximum attainment of formate anions in these arrays corresponds to the number of such sandwich complexes rather than the number of porphyrin moieties. The same bonding motif leads to dimers of the composition [(Zn(II)Por/Pc)2·HCOO](-). In these, the formate anion can act as a structural probe, allowing the distinction of isomeric ions with the formate bridging two macrocycles or being attached to a dimer of directly connected macrocycles.

Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies of β-phosphorylated Zn porphyrins

The electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties of two β-phosphorylated Zn porphyrins, [2-diethoxyphosphoryl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinato]zinc (1) and [2-diisopropoxyphosphoryl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinato]zinc (2), are reported in CH 2 Cl 2 and PhCN containing tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (TBAP) or tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (TBAPF6) as supporting electrolyte. Under certain solution conditions, three one-electron reductions are observed, with the last process being attributed to the product of a chemical reaction following formation of the porphyrin dianion. Two or three oxidations are observed for the same compounds, again depending upon the solution conditions. In some cases, two well-defined and well-separated one electron oxidations are observed but in others the first one-electron abstraction to give the porphyrin radical cation is split into two redox processes, separated from each other by 110–140 mV. This splitting of the first oxidation into two processes is attributed to linking of the two porphyrins which results when a P = O unit of the phosphoryl substituent on one porphyrin binds to the Zn ( II ) center of a second porphyrin, resulting in dimer formation. The interaction between the two macrocycles is discussed in terms of the difference in potentials between the two split redox processes (ΔE1/2) and the overall data is compared with that for other porphyrin dimers and bis-macrocycles reported in the literature.
