Abstract
Detailed investigations into the stepwise bis-functionalization of a pillar[5]arene-containing rotaxane building block have been carried out. Upon a first stopper exchange, the pillar[5]arene moiety of the mono-acylated product is preferentially located close to its reactive pentafluorophenyl ester stopper, thus limiting the accessibility to the reactive carbonyl group by the nucleophilic reagents. Selective mono-functionalization is thus very efficient. Introduction of a second stopper is then possible to generate dissymmetrical rotaxanes with different amide stoppers. Moreover, when dethreading is possible upon the second acylation, the pillar[5]arene plays the role of a protecting group allowing the synthesis of dissymmetrical axles that are particularly difficult to prepare under statistical conditions. Finally, detailed conformation analysis of the rotaxanes revealed that the position of the pillar[5]arene moiety on its axle subunit is mainly governed by polar interactions in nonpolar organic solvents, whereas solvophobic effects play a major role in polar solvents.

Abstract
A series of novel heteroditopic halogen bonding (XB) receptor functionalised silica based materials, containing mono- and bis-iodotriazole benzo-15-crown-5 groups are investigated for the cooperative binding and extraction of sodium halide ion-pair species from aqueous solution. Characterisation of the XB materials by CHN elemental analysis, 13 C CP/MAS NMR and ATR-FTIR spectroscopies confirms and quantifies the successful incorporation of the ion-pair receptor frameworks to the silica material. ICP-MS solid-liquid extraction studies demonstrate the bidentate XB functionalised material is capable of NaI extraction from water. Importantly, cooperative XB-mediated sodium halide ion-pair binding is determined to be crucial to the material's extraction capabilities, impressively demonstrating a two-fold enhancement in sodium iodide extraction efficiency relative to a heteroditopic hydrogen bonding receptor functionalised silica material analogue.

Abstract
Ion-pair recognition has emerged from cation and anion recognition and become a diverse and active field in its own right. The last decade has seen significant advances in receptor design in terms of the types of binding motifs, understanding of cooperativity and increase in complexity from heteroditopic to multitopic receptors. As a result, attention has turned to applying this knowledge to the rational design of ion-pair receptors for applications in salt solubilisation and extraction, membrane transport and sensing. This Review highlights recent progress and developments in the design and applications of heteroditopic and multitopic receptors for ion-pair recognition.

Abstract
In order to explore the properties of any species in solution, the actual, i.e. equilibrium concentration of the free species should be taken into account. Researchers have not paid attention to the deprotonation equilibrium between HSO4- and SO42- while probing bisulfate ion. In this study, we have addressed this concern and developed two zwitterions, CG (coumarin-integrated glycine) and CA (coumarin-integrated alanine), for the selective detection of HSO4- at a picomolar level (50 to 325 pM) with very high binding affinity (∼108 M-1) in pure water at physiological pH. The principle of HSO4- recognition was established via UV-vis and fluorescence techniques. DFT calculations suggested that the H-bonding interactions between the probes and HSO4- are the driving force for this unforeseen selectivity. The membrane penetration ability and nontoxicity of CG/CA enable them to function as staining agents in living brine shrimps and bacteria. The use of these probes for the estimation of HSO4- in various day-to-day edible foods and drugs along with urine samples is unprecedented. The significance and novelty of this study lies in the application and development of assays for estimating bisulfate in several real-world samples that are predominantly aqueous in nature, which are the first of their kind.

Abstract
A new bis-heteroleptic RuII complex (1[PF6]2) with iodotriazole as the anion binding group along with the attached pyrene moiety is developed to investigate anion sensing properties and the origin of its selectivity toward a particular class of anions. Selective sensing of phosphates over other anions in both the solution and solid states by 1[PF6]2 is clearly evident from the perturbation of the absorption band and a large degree of amplification of 3MLCT emission band in the presence of phosphates. Importantly, macroscopic investigation such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) indicated the formation of supramolecular architecture in the presence of dihydrogen phosphate via halogen bonding interaction and π-π stacking of pyrene moieties. Such macroscopic property is further corroborated by solution and solid state spectroscopic studies, e.g., 1H-DOSY NMR, single crystal X-ray crystallography, and solid state photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy.

Abstract
Azine ligands show preference for the antiperiplanar conformation, but their 2:2 ligand-metal complexes can exhibit a central N4M2 core in the most stable chair arrangement, as in the case of the model lithium complex, with the ligand displaying a synclinal conformation that is not stable in the free ligand. According to DFT calculations, complexation of Cu2+ with bis(1-pyrenyl)azine (1) affords a C2-symmetric [1·Cu2+]2 species with a planar central N4Cu2 core exhibiting a weak cuprophilic interaction. The pendant pyrenyl substituents are brought close and parallel to each other, therefore accounting for the π-stacking that is responsible for excimer fluorescence. In case of Hg2+, complexation by the same ligand affords a C2-symmetric complex with an essentially linear N-Hg-C coordination environment at every metal center and without intermetallic interaction. T-Stacking interactions between pyrenyl groups explain the overall rigidity required for enhancement of fluorescence. Abstract
Several bis-triazolium-based receptors have been synthesized and their anion-recognition capabilities have been studied. The central chiral 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) core features either two aryl or ferrocenyl end-capped side arms with central halogen- or hydrogen-bonding triazolium receptors. NMR spectroscopic data indicate the simultaneous occurrence of several charge-assisted aliphatic and heteroaromatic C-H noncovalent interactions and combinations of C-H hydrogen and halogen bonding. The receptors are able to selectively interact with HP2 O7 (3-) , H2 PO4 (-) , and SO4 (2-) anions, and the value of the association constant follows the sequence: HP2 O7 (3-) >SO4 (2-) >H2 PO4 (-) . The ferrocenyl end-capped 7(2+) ⋅2 BF4 (-) receptor allows recognition and differentiation of H2 PO4 (-) and HP2 O7 (3-) anions by using different channels: H2 PO4 (-) is selectively detected through absorption and emission methods and HP2 O7 (3-) by using electrochemical techniques. Significant structural results are the observation of an anion⋅⋅⋅anion interaction in the solid state (2:2 complex, 6(2+) ⋅[H2 P2 O7 ](2-) ), and a short C-I⋅⋅⋅O contact is observed in the structure of the complex [8(2+) ][SO4 ]0.5 [BF4 ].

Abstract
Aryl or heteroaryl 5-substituted imidazo-benzothiadiazole derivatives were synthesized and shown to display remarkable solvatofluorochromism and selectively sense mercury(II) cations, acetate anions, and nitroaromatic derivatives, with discrimination between p-nitrophenol and picric acid. These novel sensors are of importance these days, as the detection of explosives is a high priority in issues of national security and environmental protection. To determine the ion binding properties of the sensors, their absorption and fluorescence emission spectra upon binding different cations and anions were compared. Significant shifts in the spectra were only observed for mercury(II) and acetate. The binding of these two ions was further studied using (1)H NMR. The binding properties of different nitroaromatic compounds were also determined, and the results showed the importance of the presence of a phenol group in the guest molecule. Specifically, the two sensors were shown to discriminate between p-nitrophenol and picric acid. Finally, the mechanism of fluorescence quenching upon addition of nitrophenols was determined by computational methods.

Abstract
Recognition properties of the novel bis(carbazole) tris-ureidic-based receptors 1 and 2 toward different anions have been studied by (1)H NMR and absorption and emission spectroscopy, as well as by DFT calculations. Receptor 1, in which the two urea-functionalized arms are decorated with p-nitrophenyl rings, behaves as a highly selective chromogenic molecular probe for hydrogenpyrophosphate anion in a competitive medium (acetonitrile/water, 70/30). Receptor 2, bearing two urea arms decorated with photoactive pyrenyl rings, acts as a highly selective fluorescent molecular probe for hydrogenpyrophosphate anion in either acetonitrile or an aqueous mixture (acetonitrile/water, 85/15). Receptor 2 exhibits a dual monomer-excimer emission spectrum and undergoes a remarked ratiometry in acetonitrile in the presence of hydrogenpyrophosphate: the excimer band disappears, whereas the monomer band is slightly increased. However, in the aqueous mixture, a strong increase of the excimer emission band was observed, while the monomer emission bands remained almost unaffected. The resulting binding modes and spectroscopic features are explained by suitable structures of model complexes for both receptors. In such complexes, a peripheral cooperative effect was found, alleviating the excess of negative charge in the guest toward the outer surface of the host, as well as the required enlargement on its internal cavity.

Abstract
Reaction of 1,8-naphthyrid-2-yl-ferrocene (FcNP) with a variety of acids affords protonated salts at first, whereas longer reaction time leads to partial demetalation of FcNP resulting in a series of Fe complexes. The corresponding salts [FcNP·H][X] (X = BF(4) or CF(3)SO(3) (1)) are isolated for HBF(4) and CF(3)SO(3)H. Reaction of FcNP with equimolar amount of CF(3)CO(2)H for 12 h affords a neutral complex [Fe(FcNP)(2)(O(2)CCF(3))(2)(OH(2))(2)] (2). Use of excess acid gave a trinuclear Fe(II) complex [Fe(3)(H(2)O)(2)(O(2)CCF(3))(8)(FcNP·H)(2)] (3). Three linear iron atoms are held together by four bridging trifluoroacetates and two aqua ligands in a symmetric fashion. Reaction with ethereal solution of HCl afforded [(FcNP·H)(3)(Cl)][FeCl(4)](2) (4) irrespective of the amount of the acid used. Even the picric acid (HPic) led to metal extrusion giving rise to [Fe(2)(Cl)(2)(FcNP)(2)(Pic)(2)] (5) when crystallized from dichloromethane. Metal extrusion was also observed for CF(3)SO(3)H, but an analytically pure compound could not be isolated. The demetalation reaction proceeds with an initial proton attack to the distal nitrogen of the NP unit. Subsequently, coordination of the conjugate base to the electrophilic Fe facilitates the release of Cp rings from metal. The conjugate base plays an important role in the demetalation process and favors the isolation of the Fe complex as well. The 1,1'-bis(1,8-naphthyrid-2-yl)ferrocene (FcNP(2)) does not undergo demetalation under identical conditions. Two NP units share one positive charge causing the Fe-Cp bonds weakened to an extent that is not sufficient for demetalation. X-ray structure of the monoprotonated FcNP(2) reveals a discrete dimer [(FcNP(2)·H)](2)[OTf](2) (6) supported by two N-H···N hydrogen bonds. Crystal packing and dispersive forces associated with intra- and intermolecular π-π stacking interactions (NP···NP and Cp···NP) allow the formation of the dimer in the solid-state. The protonation and demetalation reactions of FcNP and FcNP(2) with a variety of acids are reported.

Abstract
Previous work on a ditopic receptor based on a tripodal phosphine oxide core demonstrated preferential enhancement of bromide binding over chloride or iodide in the presence of lithium cation. Current studies on an elongated receptor provide evidence that preferential bromide binding enhancement in the presence of lithium cation is common to this receptor class in general, and that lengthening of the receptor results in an overall increase in halide association. Furthermore, the extended receptor shows a strong preference for Li+ binding in solution.
