Assisted Self-Assembly to Target Heterometallic Mn-Nd and Mn-Sm SMMs: Synthesis and Magnetic Characterisation of [Mn7 Ln3 (O)4 (OH)4 (mdea)3 (piv)9 (NO3 )3 ] (Ln=Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd)*

In an assisted self-assembly approach starting from the [Mn6 O2 (piv)10 (4-Me-py)2 (pivH)2 ] cluster a family of Mn-Ln compounds (Ln=Pr-Yb) was synthesised. The reaction of [Mn6 O2 (piv)10 (4-Me-py)2 (pivH)2 ] (1) with N-methyldiethanolamine (mdeaH2 ) and Ln(NO3 )3  ⋅ 6H2 O in MeCN generally yields two main structure types: for Ln=Tb-Yb a previously reported Mn5 Ln4 motif is obtained, whereas for Ln=Pr-Eu a series of Mn7 Ln3 clusters is obtained. Within this series the GdIII analogue represents a special case because it shows both structural types as well as a third Mn2 Ln2 inverse butterfly motif. Variation in reaction conditions allows access to different structure types across the whole series. This prompts further studies into the reaction mechanism of this cluster assisted self-assembly approach. For the Mn7 Ln3 analogues reported here variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements suggest that antiferromagnetic interactions between the spin carriers are dominant. Compounds incorporating Ln=NdIII (2), SmIII (3) and GdIII (5) display SMM behaviour. The slow relaxation of the magnetisation for these compounds was confirmed by ac measurements above 1.8 K.

A Novel Family of Triangular CoII2LnIII and CoII2YIII Clusters by the Employment of Di-2-Pyridyl Ketone

The synthesis, structural characterization and magnetic study of novel CoII/4f and CoII/YIII clusters are described. In particular, the initial employment of di-2-pyridyl ketone, (py)2CO, in mixed metal Co/4f chemistry, provided access to four triangular clusters, [CoII2MIII{(py)2C(OEt)(O)}4(NO3)(H2O)]2[M(NO3)5](ClO4)2 (M = Gd, 1; Dy, 2; Tb, 3; Y, 4), where (py)2C(OEt)(O)− is the monoanion of the hemiketal form of (py)2CO. Clusters 1–4 are the first reported Co/4f (1–3) and Co/Y (4) species bearing (py)2CO or its derivatives, despite the fact that over 200 metal clusters bearing this ligand have been reported so far. Variable-temperature, solid-state dc and ac magnetic susceptibility studies were carried out on 1–4 and revealed the presence of weak ferromagnetic exchange interactions between the metal ions (JCo-Co = +1.3 and +0.40 cm−1 in 1 and 4, respectively; JCo-Gd = +0.09 cm−1 in 1). The ac susceptibility studies on 2 revealed nonzero, weak out-of-phase (χ’’M) signals below ~5 K.

Syntheses, Structures, and Magnetic Properties of a Series of Heterotri-, Tetra- and Pentanuclear LnIII⁻CoII Compounds

Three types of Ln(III)⁻Co(II) heterometallic compounds, LnCo₂(L1)₇(bipy)₂ (Ln = Pr-1, Eu-2, Sm-3, Gd-4, Tb-5, Dy-6) (L1 = 4-chlorobenzoate, bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine), Ln₂Co₂(L₂)10(bipy)₂ (Ln = Sm-7, Gd-8, Tb-9, Dy-10, Ho-11, Er-12, Yb-13), (L2 = 2,4-dichlorobenzoate, bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), and Ln₂Co₃(L1)12(bipy)₂ (Ln = Ho-14, Er-15, Yb-16), were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy and magnetic measurements. Structural analyses revealed that 14⁻16 take on a unique linear pentanuclear structural motif. Interestingly, the Ho-containing compound 14 exhibits magnetic relaxation behavior.

Butterfly M2 IIIEr2 (MIII = Fe and Al) SMMs: Synthesis, Characterization, and Magnetic Properties

The reaction of N-(2-pyridylmethyl)iminodiethanol (H₂L, pmide), FeCl₂·4H₂O or AlCl₃·6H₂O with ErCl₃·6H₂O and p-Me-PhCO₂H in the ratio of 2:1:1:4 in the presence of Et₃N in MeOH and MeCN yielded compounds [Fe₂Er₂(μ₃-OH)₂(pmide)₂(p-Me-PhCO₂)₆]·2MeCN (1) and [Al₂Er₂(μ₃-OH)₂(pmide)₂(p-Me-PhCO₂)₆]·2MeCN (2). These two complexes are isostructural, possessing a planar butterfly motif with the Er^III ions in the wingtip positions. Both compounds show single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior. For the [Al₂Er₂] compound, the slow relaxation of the magnetization under zero applied direct current (dc) field does not show maxima, but the relaxation processes could be analyzed using an applied dc field of 1000 Oe. In-depth alternating current measurements under different dc fields on the [Fe₂Er₂] compound reveals that the Fe-Fe and Fe-Er interactions speed up the relaxation and decrease the energy barrier height of the SMM in comparison with the [Al₂Er₂] case.

Fine Tuning the Energy Barrier of Molecular Nanomagnets via Lattice Solvent Molecules

Solvents play important roles in our lives, they are also of interest in molecular materials, especially for molecular magnets. The solvatomagnetic effect is generally used for trigger and/or regulation of magnetic properties in molecule-based systems, however, molecular nanomagnets showing solvatomagnetic effects are very difficult to obtain. Here we report four 3d-4f heterometallic cluster complexes containing ROH lattice solvent molecules, [Cu₃Tb₂(H₃L)₂(OAc)₂(hfac)₄]∙2ROH {H₆L = 1,3-Bis[tris(hydroxymethyl)methylamino]propane, hfac^- = hexafluoroacetylacetonate; R = CH₃, 1; R = C₂H₅, 2; R = C₃H₇, 3; R = H, 4}. Single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties of these four complexes were observed to be dependent on the ROH lattice solvent molecule. There is an interesting magneto-structural correlation: the larger the R group, the higher the energy barrier. For the first time, the solvatomagnetic effect is used for the continuous fine adjustment of the energy barrier of 0D molecular nanomagnets. Additionally, [Cu₃Dy₂(H₃L)₂(OAc)₂(hfac)₄]∙2MeOH (5), an analogue of [Cu₃Tb₂(H₃L)₂(OAc)₂(hfac)₄]∙2MeOH (1), is also reported for comparison.

‘All three-in-one’: ferromagnetic interactions, single-molecule magnetism and magnetocaloric properties in a new family of [Cu4Ln] (LnIII = Gd, Tb, Dy) clusters

A new family of [Cu₄Ln] clusters with a ‘propeller’-like topology was obtained; all complexes are ferromagnetically-coupled and display either MCE or SMM properties.
