Abstract
Poly(tartaric acid) is a relatively recently described polymer that can be easily synthesized and scaled up from a readily available renewable material (tartaric acid). This article demonstrates its use in a green synthesis of gold nanoparticles, silver nanoparticles, copper particles, and magnetite nanoparticles. In this case poly(tartaric acid) acts both as a reductant and as a coating agent. To our knowledge this is the first green synthesis of several different types of nanoparticles using only one reagent (polytartrate) as both reductant and coating. The resulting particles were analyzed by XRD, TEM/SEM, EDX, FTIR, DLS, zeta-potential, XPS, and UV/VIS spectroscopy. Preliminary studies of the thermal behavior of mixtures of different types of particles with poly(tartaric acid) were also conducted. The obtained particles show different sizes depending on the material, and the coating allows for better dispersibility as well as potential further functionalization, making them potentially useful also for other applications, besides the inclusion in polymer composites.

Abstract
Owing to their high natural abundance, low cost, easy availability, and excellent magnetic properties, considerable interest has been devoted to the synthesis and applications of iron oxide nanostructured materials. Liquid-phase synthesis methods are economical and environmentally friendly with low energy consumption and volatile emissions, and as such have received much attention for the preparation of iron oxide nanostructured materials. Herein, the liquid-phase synthesis methods of iron oxide nanostructured materials including the co-precipitation method, microemulsion method, conventional hydrothermal and solvothermal methods, microwave-assisted heating method, sonolysis method, and other methods are summarized and reviewed. Many iron oxide nanostructured materials, self-assembled nanostructures, and nanocomposites have been successfully prepared, which are of great significance to enhance their structure-dependent properties and applications. The specific roles of liquid-phase chemical reaction parameters in regulating the chemical composition, structure, crystallinity, morphology, particle size, and dispersive behavior of the as-prepared iron oxide nanostructured materials are emphasized. The biomedical, environmental, and electrochemical energy storage applications of iron oxide nanostructured materials are discussed. Finally, challenges and perspectives are proposed for future investigations on the liquid-phase synthesis and applications of iron oxide nanostructured materials.

Abstract
Photo-Fenton processes have been widely studied in wastewater treatment. In this research, the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) was carried out in a new heterogeneous photo-Fenton process. The ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid (EDDS) was used as chelating agent in this system with two different kinds of commercially available nanosized hematite (30 nm and 80 nm) addition. The results showed that the present of EDDS could enhance the degradation efficiency. And can be concluded that the degradation efficiency is better in the system with 30 nm hematite. The TEM, XRD, and specific surface area were conducted to understand the different characteristics of the two size hematite. The adsorption experiments of BPA and EDDS on hematite proved that there was little adsorption of BPA while the EDDS was adsorbed much more on hematite, which has confirmed Fe(III) and EDDS can form Fe(III)-EDDS complex. The effects of different parameters including hematite loading, H2O2, and EDDS concentrations on the degradation process were investigated. According to the results, the optimum condition for BPA degradation using 30 nm (0.8 g L-1 hematite, 0.1 mmol L-1 H2O2, and 1.2 mmol L-1 EDDS) and 80 nm (0.6 g L-1 hematite, 0.05 mmol L-1 H2O2, and 1.2 mmol L-1 EDDS) hematite were selected. It was confirmed that the ·OH plays an important role in the oxidation process through attacking the BPA molecule and produce hydroxyl addition derivative. In addition, O2 can react with electron (e-) and holes (h+) produced by iron oxide under UV irradiation to create 1O2, which could work as potential reactive species to oxidize BPA.

Abstract
This paper reports the synthetic route of 3-D network shape α-Fe2O3 from aqueous solutions of iron precursor using a non-ionic polymeric soft-template, Pluronic P123. During the synthesis of α-Fe2O3, particle sizes, crystal phases and morphologies were significantly influenced by pH, concentrations of precursor and template. The unique shape of worm-like hematite was obtained only when a starting solution was prepared by a weakly basic pH condition and a very specific composition of constituents. The synthesized nanocrystal at this condition had a narrow pore size distribution and high surface area compared to the bulk α-Fe2O3 or the one synthesized from lower pH conditions. The hydrocracking performance was tested over the synthesized iron oxide catalysts with different morphologies. The worm-like shape of iron oxide showed a superior performance, including overall yield of liquid fuel product and coke formation, over the hydrocracking of heavy petroleum oil.

Abstract
The mesoporous α-Fe2O3/cyclized-polyacrylonitrile (C-PAN) composite was synthesized by a rapid and facile two-step method. The electrode was fabricated without conductive carbon addictive and employed as anode for lithium-ion batteries. Results demonstrate that building a conformal coating of a C-PAN network can provide a strong adhesion with active materials and contribute excellent electronic conductivity to the electrode, which can relieve the huge volume changes during a lithiation/delithiation process and accelerate the charge transfer rate. The material exhibited high reversible capacity of ca. 996 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles at 0.2C, 773 mAh g(-1) at 1C and 655 mAh g(-1) at 2C, respectively, showing well-enhanced cycling performance and superior rate capacity, and also exhibiting significantly improved power density and energy density compared to the traditional graphite materials. Our results provide a facile and efficient way to enhance the performance of α-Fe2O3 anode material, which also can be applied for other oxide anode materials.

Abstract
Intrinsic short hole diffusion length is a well-known problem for α-Fe2O3 as a visible-light photocatalytic material. In this paper, a nanodisk morphology was designed to remarkably enhance separation of electron-hole pairs of α-Fe2O3. As expected, α-Fe2O3 nanodisks presented superior photocatalytic activity toward methylene blue degradation: more than 90% of the dye could be photodegraded within 30 min in comparison with a degradation efficiency of 50% for conventional Fe2O3 powder. The unique multilayer structure is thought to play a key role in the remarkably improved photocatalytic performance. Further experiments involving mechanism investigations revealed that instead of high surface area, ·OH plays a crucial role in methylene blue degradation and that O·2- may also contribute effectively to the degradation process. This paper demonstrates a facile and energy-saving route to fabricating homogenous α-Fe2O3 nanodisks with superior photocatalytic activity that is suitable for the treatment of contaminated water and that meets the requirement of mass production.

Abstract
Hollow core/shell hematite microspheres with diameter of ca. 1-2 μm have been successfully achieved by calcining the precursor composite microspheres of pyrite and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in air. The synthesized products were characterized by a wide range of techniques including powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) gas sorptometry. Temperature- and time-dependent experiments unveil that the precursor pyrite-PVP composite microspheres finally transform into hollow core/shell hematite microspheres in air through a multistep process including the oxidation and sulfation of pyrite, combustion of PVP occluded in the precursor, desulfation, aggregation, and fusion of nanosized hematite as well as mass transportation from the interior to the exterior of the microspheres. The formation of the hollow core/shell microspheres dominantly depends on the calcination temperature under current experimental conditions, and the aggregation of hematite nanocrystals and the core shrinking during the oxidation of pyrite are responsible for the formation of the hollow structures. Moreover, the adsorption ability of the hematite for Sm(III) was also tested. The results exhibit that the hematite microspheres have good adsorption activity for trivalent samarium, and that its adsorption capacity strongly depends on the pH of the solution, and the maximum adsorption capacity for Sm(III) is 14.48 mg/g at neutral pH. As samarium is a typical member of the lanthanide series, our results suggest that the hollow hematite microspheres have potential application in removal of rare earth elements (REEs) entering the water environment.

Abstract
Monodisperse Fe(3)O(4) and γ-Fe(2)O(3) magnetic mesoporous microspheres are prepared via a surfactant-free solvothermal combined with precursor thermal transformation method. The as-prepared Fe(3)O(4) and γ-Fe(2)O(3) magnetic mesoporous microspheres have a relatively high specific surface area of 122.3 and 138.6 m(2)/g, respectively. The Fe(3)O(4) and γ-Fe(2)O(3) magnetic mesoporous microspheres are explored as the anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, and they have a high initial discharge capacity of 1307 and 1453 mA h/g, respectively, and a good reversible performance (450 mA h/g for Fe(3)O(4) and 697 mA h/g for γ-Fe(2)O(3) after 110 cycles) at the current density of 0.2C.
