Shaking Things from the Ground-Up: A Systematic Overview of the Mechanochemistry of Hard and High-Melting Inorganic Materials

We provide a systematic overview of the mechanochemical reactions of inorganic solids, notably simple binary compounds, such as oxides, nitrides, carbides, sulphides, phosphides, hydrides, borides, borane derivatives, and related systems. Whereas the solid state has been traditionally considered to be of little synthetic value by the broader community of synthetic chemists, the solid-state community, and in particular researchers focusing on the reactions of inorganic materials, have thrived in building a rich and dynamic research field based on mechanically-driven transformations of inorganic substances typically seen as inert and high-melting. This review provides an insight into the chemical richness of such mechanochemical reactions and, at the same time, offers their tentative categorisation based on transformation type, resulting in seven distinct groupings: (i) the formation of adducts, (ii) the reactions of dehydration; (iii) oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions; (iv) metathesis (or exchange) reactions; (v) doping and structural rearrangements, including reactions involving the reaction vessel (the milling jar); (vi) acid-base reactions, and (vii) other, mixed type reactions. At the same time, we offer a parallel description of inorganic mechanochemical reactions depending on the reaction conditions, as those that: (i) take place under mild conditions (e.g., manual grinding using a mortar and a pestle); (ii) proceed gradually under mechanical milling; (iii) are self-sustained and initiated by mechanical milling, i.e., mechanically induced self-propagating reactions (MSRs); and (iv) proceed only via harsh grinding and are a result of chemical reactivity under strongly non-equilibrium conditions. By elaborating on typical examples and general principles in the mechanochemistry of hard and high-melting substances, this review provides a suitable complement to the existing literature, focusing on the properties and mechanochemical reactions of inorganic solids, such as nanomaterials and catalysts.

Zinc hydroxystannate/zinc-tin oxide heterojunctions for the UVC-assisted photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange and tetracycline

Partial phase modification of zinc hydroxystannate (ZHS) is an effective technique for improving its light absorption capacity. In this study, a zinc hydroxystannate/zinc-tin oxide (ZHS/ZTO) heterostructure was synthesized via chemical co-precipitation followed by annealing. The as-prepared heterostructure revealed cubic crystal morphology along with high-intensity diffraction peaks in the XRD pattern. The XPS analysis of ZHS/ZTO heterostructures demonstrated the presence of key elements (Zn, Sn, and O) in their most stable ionic forms. The photocatalytic degradation efficiencies of the prepared samples were tested against methyl orange (MO) and tetracycline (TC) in an aqueous medium under UVC (254 nm) radiation. Under optimized conditions, maximum degradation efficiencies of 99% for MO and 97% for TC were observed in 120 and 180 min, respectively. Further, the predominant role of OH˙ radicals in the photocatalytic removal of MO and TC was evident through scavenging experiments. 2nd order kinetic model was outperformed in simulating the degradation mechanism of both targets over 1st and zero-order kinetic models. Finally, a photocatalytic degradation mechanism is proposed based on the energy values estimated for the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) using UPS analysis.

Recent Advances in Zinc Hydroxystannate-Based Flame Retardant Polymer Blends

During the combustion of polymeric materials, plenty of heat, smoke, and toxic gases are produced that may cause serious harm to human health. Although the flame retardants such as halogen- and phosphorus-containing compounds can inhibit combustion, they cannot effectively reduce the release of toxic fumes. Zinc hydroxystannate (ZHS, ZnSn(OH)6) is an environmentally friendly flame retardant that has attracted extensive interest because of its high efficiency, safety, and smoke suppression properties. However, using ZHS itself may not contribute to the optimal flame retardant effect, which is commonly combined with other flame retardants to achieve more significant efficiency. Few articles systematically review the recent development of ZHS in the fire safety field. This review aims to deliver an insight towards further direction and advancement of ZHS in flame retardant and smoke suppression for multiple polymer blends. In addition, the fire retarded and smoke suppression mechanism of ZHS will be demonstrated and discussed in depth.

In Situ Construction of a MgSn(OH)6 Perovskite/SnO2 Type-II Heterojunction: A Highly Efficient Photocatalyst towards Photodegradation of Tetracycline

Using solar energy to remove antibiotics from aqueous environments via photocatalysis is highly desirable. In this work, a novel type-II heterojunction photocatalyst, MgSn(OH)₆/SnO_2, was successfully prepared via a facile one-pot in situ hydrothermal method at 220 °C for 24 h. The obtained heterojunctions were characterized via powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated for photodegradation of tetracycline solution under ultraviolet irradiation. The initial concentration of tetracycline solution was set to be 20 mg/L. The prepared heterojunctions exhibited superior photocatalytic activity compared with the parent MgSn(OH)₆ and SnO₂ compounds. Among them, the obtained MgSn(OH)₆/SnO₂ heterojunction with MgCl₂·6H₂O:SnCl₄·5H₂O = 4:5.2 (mmol) displayed the highest photocatalytic performance and the photodegradation efficiency conversion of 91% could be reached after 60 min under ultraviolet irradiation. The prepared heterojunction maintained its performance after four successive cycles of use. Active species trapping experiments demonstrated that holes were the dominant active species. Hydroxyl radicals and superoxide ions had minor effects on the photocatalytic oxidation of tetracycline. Photoelectrochemical measurements were used to investigate the photocatalytic mechanism. The enhancement of photocatalytic activity could be assigned to the formation of a type-II junction photocatalytic system, which was beneficial for efficient transfer and separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. This research provides an in situ growth strategy for the design of highly efficient photocatalysts for environmental restoration.
